Deep throat wasn't a dirty joke, it's a reference to Watergate. The secret informant who leaked the papers that exposed Watergate was codenamed Deep Throat. I have no idea why, but that's probably what Kojima was referencing.
You are right about the reference! In the game the conversation goes:
- Just call me "Deepthroat".
- "Deepthroat"? The informant from the Watergate scandal?
- Never mind about that.
Yes, but that nickname is alluding to the porno film of the same name. It's still funny even in context.

@@crediblesalamander8056 Wait what? Why did the dude have a code-name referencing a porno? Just for funsies?
I mean yeah pretty much, the reporters gave him the nickname because he had *deep* connections, and also probably because the name would stand out and be hard to forget, considering the popularity of the porno. Mark Felt himself probably didn't like the nickname but I could only find one source mentioning that (Vanity Fair, so take it with a grain of salt)

Deep Throat
As an American history teacher sitting here listening to this conversation I am both entertained and horrified.
Deepthroat was the code name of an informant who brought to light Ms deeds about President Nixon and the Watergate scandal.
Kojima was making a reference to that
Ms.Deeds huh? Lol
@XenonZed snake literally references the connection between deepthroat and the watergate scandal in the same conversation.
@XenonZed A sitting President stepping down to avoid impeachment was pretty newsworthy at the time. Enough so that the journalists that broke the scandal wrote a Pulitzer Prize winning book (All the President’s Men), which then became an Oscar winning movie. Pulitzer Prizes and Oscars don’t happen in vacuums, so people in other countries had to be reading and watching them.
Would Watergate be taught about in other countries now? Probably not, unless the class was about investigative journalism.
@XenonZed In the middle of the Vietnam War, during the nuke talks and during the election, the President of the most powerful nation on Earth was accused of being a criminal. Every single "scandal" that happens now has the suffix -gate. Hillary Clinton was a lawyer involved in Watergate and the non-story of her being fired/leaving her position was being thrown around like mud in 2016. I'm honestly shocked they didn't know "Deep Throat" is now a common term for a big-time informant because of Nixon.
Would not refer to Watergate as a "small" detail of American history.
@XenonZed small detail?? Dude I'm not American and I know that part of history. I'm not even a major in history whatsoever. I've listened to enough podcasts with these 3 and their basic common knowledge about a lot of things is very low to a point it's sad
Just did Milgram's experiment in my psych class. It isn't really considered ethically acceptable anymore since it is stressful and deceptive (although some experiments require deception because if the participant knew the real goal they would change their behaviour). Would've been more interesting if I had the boys talk about it back then haha.
About the metal gear deep throat thing: The leaker of the watergate scandal operated under the pseudonym of "Deep Throat" and it was a direct reference to that. This was also before the term was popularized to refer to the sexual act. I genuinely believe Kojima just didn't know it had a different meaning.
I'm pretty sure that Deep Throat was a direct reference to the porno, which was released at the same time. I'm also sure the Watergate scandal was even mentioned in-game, so Garnt clearly didn't call his contacts often enough.
Yeah immediately after deep throat introduces himself snake says "the informant of the water gate scandal?", the context is definitely explained in the game
@@pokyboss4281 I'm gonna press X to doubt that porno thing.
@@bkirkpa1 The leaker of the Watergate scandal was dubbed Deep Throat (to protect his anonymity) by the journalists in reference to both the "deep" nature of his aledged position in the government and as reference to the 1972 pornographic movie of the same name. Look up the 1974 book "All The President's Men," by Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. The anonymous Deep Throat was later revealed to be Associate Diector of the FBI, W. Mark Felt.

For the subject of women getting harassed in Japan, I find it totally revolting. And the thing is, it's not only in Japan. When I was in Korea, I saw the same problem. Even doe I never witnessed it in the train, when I was on a night out, the agressivity towards women in order to "dance" with them was insane. On the accountability of writers: I do think that writers who write about controversial topics are often challenged on then, GRR Martin included. The thing that has to be analysed is why a certain thing is being portrayed. Generally, if you portray a certain objectionable act, you can be in favour of it, against it...or it could be a joke. For example, recently there was a book where basically only the antagonists were all LGBT, and there the objectionable content is being favoured, that is easily identified as bad. When writers portray such issues to shed light on them, or to criticize something (aBoUt sOcIeTy) then that's generally seen as acceptable (in the current moral climate, I 100% agree that the bar is always shifting). The blurry line is with comedy. To what extent are you laughing at the homophobia/racism etc and to what extent are you laughing with it. And with internet humour, there's the complicating factor of to what extent are you just laughing at the absurdity of a certain thing, like with Filthy Frank. Especially outside its original context and time period, filthy Frank isn't particularly funny, which is why people take it at face value, at which it's not offering any criticism or sensible portrayal of the character. That said, it was a different time, and it's not that I think that Joji personally holds those views or should be held accountable to them, but I'd say it's certainly the right call he made to stop with it.
@@lylianx4209 because while they have a lot of control on what content and topics they make and put out... They have near-zero control on how it's gonna be received and perceived by their audience. @@animeeddie2104 Yeah, I get that which makes me a bit hesitant to “turn my brain on” and take their opinions to heart bc I come here to ignore the bigotry and keep this as a relatively safe space. That and there are certain opinions that people should just keep to themselves, I think.
I get why he would not make that part of his pulic persona, online politic reactions are just the worst. I get why he would hold back . Beause online politic discourse is genuinly, the worst. i grew up with SUPER anti government parents, and it's easy for low income families to have a distrust for the government, obviously because they feel they've been screwed by the government countless times, even if they haven't. I don't agree with the sentiments, but it at least allows me to be empathetic to the conversation. I feel more bad for conspiracy theorists than angry.
I think everyone should be a bit distrustful of their government, since even in my country of Finland which ranks among the top 10 least corrupt countries, there has unfortunately still been some cases of government corruption. Also if you live in the USA, China, Russia etc. i totally understand why you wouldn't trust your government.
@@takoen_taotaan distrustful and trusting aren't exactly the right words imo. I think ideally somebody should be discerning of the media they consume and the laws put in place by their local, national and international governments. Understand how governments work and what the situation is from your perspective (keeping in mind other potential perspectives as well) and having a solid bed of principles is the easiest way to go about life. Humans run governments, and humans are flawed but also understand that if all of humanity was inherently evil and self serving we would have died out as a species years ago and civilization is nothing without trust and a sense of community.
TLDR: always have a thonk in the Monke brain, we live in a society
I'm Brazilian and Brazil is absolute trash with politics, at least 90% of the politicians are corrupt. Good politicians are always from small towns and even though they try, the bigger politicians steal the money that the other ones need.
What I'm saying is that it's normal for people here to distrust politicians, because Brazil is slowly decaying.
I'm the opposite. My family trusts the government enough to fight for it, myself included. Sometimes we just wish it would stop dicking around and accomplish its established goals.
@@PawsitivelyQuestionable The problem with most people's ideal of "distrust" is that most people work backwards from their conclusions. I've never seen anyone who is "distrustful" but then turns around and says "after reviewing the facts, this seems good". There is ALWAYS some way to twist facts to reach the conclusion that they were right to be opposed to whatever they wanted to be opposed to. If everything looks good, then it's a secret bait to make you complacent to then do the REALLY evil stuff later, etc.
Thank you for talking about power fantasies. I always appreciate those characters with flaws solving their real problems, not defeating everything with power. Hence I always like those kind of genre where a group of teenagers gain super power not to fight villian but to solve their personal issues. Its a type of genre nobody really cares but my favorite genre.
This is a nice change of pace. Really says a lot
I really appreciate their discussion at the end about the troubles japanese women face on a daily basis, the fact that more often than not the culprit can get away with their actions with minimal to no punishment is atrocious.
Its honestly one of the main reasons why the way I see Japan vastly changed from the idealized image we all have from hearing all the good things about Japan. I'm sure it's still a wonderful country despite its flaws but shit like that is still scary to me
Most Asians countries are like that, but you know it's mainly the reason the ratio of men to women in China (also other Asian countries as well, but using china as the main example) is fucking shit sooner or later the men have to probably leave if they want to mate. And back in the day it was the wild wild west I heard when it was limited to 1 kid per household they would drop their daughters off in orphanages or kill them, or "accidents" terrible terrible stuff
@@Jerry4281 just asking, how is it related between men to women ratio and how women in asian countries are treated? Or am I misreading things?
Also, which other asian country do you refer to? I’ve only ever heard of china and japan facing that problem for now.
@@MyAdam4321 In most other countries the male to female ratio is bad from what I heard I might be wrong on that it a majority of Asians countries might have more men, but I honestly don't think it's much different in India or other Asian cultures men are treated better overall in most Asian cultures also women don't deserve to be treated less than human but you know most Asian countries you can show a giant dick and it's fine but once it's a vagina oh shit we need to stop this immediately. Its so dumb. You see in my culture women are treated the same way (I am Mexican) usually the men are treated better.
My solution would be to just break the creep fingers and if the police asks you just say that you were never groped in the first place
@@MyAdam4321 We have the highest amount of crime against women in India. It's mostly the whole caste bs going on over here. There was a case where they made a rapist marry the victim because they thought she can never be married off as she was "impure". Shit's vile, man. It sucks not being able to trust anyone and look behind you every five steps.

This podcast says a lot about society, yet we live in one.
Indeed 🧐
Why of course 🧐
This is one of the best Trash Taste episodes of all time. It felt more relatable cause when you're with friends, you love joking about stuff and looking at dumb memes lol
Hey Garnt! My girlfriend is a bit of a tech geek (project manager for cloud services for rakuten and managed software design for Android). She might be able to help with your setup! (Obviously we live in Japan)

For those new to OBS (or just didn't know):
If you already have your OBS setup figured out as much as you can, make a backup of your setup files. They're kept as ini and json files so you can move between various setups if needed or when it resets to the beginning
(a bit late but:)
To add on this good idea train.
Free Wi-fi tip 101: router in direct line of sight of recieving device. Having flat metal surfaces could bounce and destructively interfere with original signal(really situational) = no wifi in that direction.
Would totally help with tech support (if i was nearer, or twice as better (did it only once by request, and a bit by assignment, and a lot when i needed it my self(no linux)), or remembered Connor's official business mail(after seeing it, since i did see his once)) and you can totally pay for tech support, it's usually quite expensive ("tv tech support" level expensive).

Casting a vote for more Real-Talks. I love TT because it's light-hearted but also avoiding deep stuff all the time is in of itself, deep stuff, if that makes sense

The Deep Throat name might be a reference to the Watergate wistleblower. That or Hideo Kojima has a dirty mind

When Joey says parents should teach women self defense, that's not the issue, that won't solve anything. What needs to be taught is for boys to learn consent and respecting boundaries and treating women like people not objects.

Its been 2 years since I've watched an anime and yet i still feel like I'm up to date with everything
I get it bud some of the concepts are so overused these days especially in shounen and isekai themed shows.
Love the ep ❤ and the vibe that is going in the video. It hit home of being picky on watching Anime or reading Manga. Or watching less Anime when the time you have is small.
Keep up the good work and do your best you three.
47:15 What Joey's saying is completely wrong. When Joji did the vid exposing himself as Filthy Frank he didn't say he hated his audience, and he even appeared as himself in a few other FF vids around that time. The details are kinda hazy, but the fanbase he had then (early 2014, before he got really popular) apparently was toxic enough to make him hide his real self again which really broke his spirits. So even though his audience changed massively as his fame grew, not just accepting of but loving the real Joji behind the scenes, that old incident really left a mark on him that never went away.
They say a lot of completely wrong shit when it comes to topics such as “being cancelled”. Not surprising at all that they got this part wrong.
I have a feeling Joey got this weilt because he was a frank fan
Connor and Garnt: "we weren't raised on slimy food"
Jellied eels: "well hello there"
This episode having a segment where they talked about anime really took me back to the early days of the podcast. Jokes aside, this was a great episode. Had a little something for everyone. 7/10 -IGN
Connor talking about not liking the deep fried cartilage had me thinking about my childhood, I've grown up with eating deep fried chicken gizzards and would have to fight my grandfather for the last piece, all I can think is "Oh Connor, you would not like that at all" haha
Meilyne intercepting was a timeless and wonderful moment. As an audience member, it feels very satisfying to see your “local audience” react to what’s going on.
15:29 Saitama is a great example of a well written Overpowered Protagonist. His talk with King about being a hero was just so well done and written. (It's chapter 77 btw)
In real life people deal with feeling with being stuck/underappreciated/bored. Being underpowered is usually how this is narratively done. But in OPM, Saitama gets the exact same predicament from being overpowered. He feels stuck and bored WITH being overpowered AND is also underappreciated. THAT'S why he works, very relatable human struggles despite near opposite circumstances to reality.
ONE have a really good control over his characters writing and development. Not only Santana but Mob is also an overpowered character that isn’t fulfilled by it alone and whose journey is not about just getting more and more powerful.
"we live in a society" is becoming the new "it hits different"
1:58:56 So this is why Eren told the others to put their hands on the table. What a well mannered guy :)
I personally really enjoy the deep topics they talked about in this episode
I know we were talking about how parents should teach their daughters to handle situations like that, but I think it's just as
important that parents teach their sons on how to behave and act around women. There wouldn't be a problem to handle
if there wasn't a problem in the first place.
Some of those ちかん/maniac didn't have parental guidance or is sexually frustrated. It does says a lot about society.
Teaching can only go so far. Self defense will always be better in the long run.
Self-defense in this case can also only go so far because they can be the ones punished for doing so. It should also be a matter of everyone standing up for others instead of leaving the burden to those affected (not in a white-knighting sense, but just being a decent person).
So smart , just tell killers not to kill bruh.
We just need better sex education, period. Half these parents are not qualified to teach their kids jack.

The latest two episodes of Mushoku Tensei are both about families which I felt are really well made, especially since I myself haven't seen my family for years. Shoutout to this show if you still haven't watched it, astounding art, great animation, and great storytelling plus world-building.
I just started season 2, it's great. I thought of this show as they were talking and trash anime 😆
Sadly, I got no motivation watching something I already read and know the ending about.
As a novel I read growing out with, Mushoku Tensei impact my viewpoint of relationship with parents and responsibility as a family member. Rudeus teenage and young adult arcs,, especially ones with impacting his blood related family, really felt like a teenage and young adult process of an eldest son
The problem with Connor is that he says every anime nowdays is generic but he only watches Jojo and the mainstream stuff, can't blame him tbh because there is a lot of trash anime around

So, I'm older than Chris himself and I found myself watching less and less anime as I got older.
