Connor has so many good points on so many topics, but his downfall tends to be his inability to articulate them as it happens. They even talked about this before. But he did an amazing job with this podcast. His rant on NFTs, his description of VR, etc; he gave solid analogies.

Salt does kill bacteria, so does alcohol or boiling water. Problem of all this stuff is, it damages the open tissue as well and therefore will most of the time delay healing. Just use a modern anti-septic which usually doesn't even sting and is much more effective.

And those who work at shelters. They have to deal with fanatics who think kill shelters are the absolute worst without really thinking through who the hell has funding for sheltering the millions of abandoned pets just here in the U.S. Are they going to contribute enough money to make every shelter a no-kill shelter? No? Shut the hell up, then 🙄.
Also, dark side of a no-kill shelter: It means they have to turn away animals that might need serious care because they're stretched to capacity. Anyone else comes in...and someone will need to die to accomodate them. And workers who work at "kill shelters" often suffer deeply emotionally and mentally for it. There's the euthanasia, the people bitching that they're not doing enough for the animals, the animals that they are working their asses off to save...and then they lose them. It's a lot. "Compassion fatigue" ends up happening to a lot of shelter workers where their desire to help as much as they can but are bombarded with negativity ends up causing emotional trauma and many quit. So, now these animals have less people available to help them.
This pairs into neutering as well and those who espouse flawed logic about how all animals want to have offspring and "How would you like it if someone neutered you?" Humans don't go into heat. We have fertile periods and sex drives, but not a strong compulsion that we must heed and procreate. Because dogs and cats, as the biggest examples in shelters, do have reproductive drives that are almost never ignored and they reproduce with multiples, it creates a lot of animals very quickly. Humans usually only have one child, with anything more being outside of the norm. It's not common for a cat or dog to only have one puppy or kitten. And not only that, with many breeds, the more times they get pregnant, the bigger their litters. Ever seen a UA-cam channel that brags about breeding dogs? Ever wonder how their litters are often so big? That's why. And no, not all of those puppies will be kept by the owners who initially buy them. And that's just breeders, imagine this happening to stray animals. The number is astronomical. Spaying and neutering is a must to keep some sembelance of control on the number.
Cats do alright living out on the street but there's the argument to make about them decimating wildlife with their hunting, spreading disease, and their much shorter life spans than indoor cats. Dogs...become dangerous when they're allowed to become feral, as they often will form packs that attack humans. And for both, rabies becomes more likely. Dogs also have a closer affinity with humans and have been bred to be pets. They're used to being provided for. I say this as there are some who feel all pets should be left to roam free and that's just not realistic. I've never seen a city with a large stray animal population where the city and animals looked well taken care of.
So, you have all of these ideologies based on emotion and opinions, not fact, being hurled at shelter workers and many just end up having enough. They quit the jobs they thought they loved. Or they check out on life. We lose some amazing, loving souls because of it.
When Joey said he's never met a depressed person who works with animals, shelter workers likely would agree to disagree. Hannah, from the channel Kitten Lady, has a great video that is much more polite than my language that she did a few months ago on the burnout of shelter workers and how fanatics and ignorance is pushing workers away.

@@bulwark2656 I would definitely say look out for schools with good research programs and a wide variety of animal related classes. So NOT school with just a general biology degree and only a handful of zoology courses. Schools that have zoology, animal biology, wildlife conservation, evolutionary biology, they're all very analogous degrees. I went to UC Davis which actually had all of those degrees!
Once you get to a university, look up the faculty of your department and find a professor whose research interests you. Professors will have their research interests and publications on the faculty listings and most even have websites nowadays! You don't even need to know the professor. A lot of times, they're looking for undergrads to help out anyway, so just send them an email talking about what you like about their research and ask to join their lab. That's what I did with my lab and by the time I graduated, I had a senior thesis and published my research!
And if you join a lab and you don't really like it, don't be afraid to move to a different lab! College is supposed to be a time where you figure out what you want to do! I started off in an avian lab and I realized I really didn't like working with domesticated animals so i moved to a lab that worked with my school's entomology museum and I've been in love ever since! Hope that helps 💕
Also scholarships, apply to scholarships!! Even in your senior year of hs! I can't stress this enough. There are so many scholarships available to students and lot of people just don't know about them.

The homebrew remedies are based on experimenting and science, like Garnt said, rubbing salt on a wound does actually help disinfect it, vitamin C helps your immune system fight of flues, rubbing wasabi on wounds has a positive effect cause it fights of bacteria and so on. It's like the 100 stories in Dr. Stone, something humans figured out A LONG TIME AGO, and just passed it to their offspring through fun stories and riddles and shit. @yarion4774 2 роки тому

I mean, that's the paradigm of falsification that all modern science builds upon. No theory is true, they are only not yet proven wrong thus the best we have.
You can read more on that if you look into Karl Popper who was a figurehead of that paradigm shift.

    • @thehaloofthesun7174
      @thehaloofthesun7174 2 роки тому +91

Not really. That's just logic (process of elimination).
Science is about understanding the world through forming a rigid, educated guess to explain a phenomenon, then seeing if that guess holds up in practical experiments involving that phenomenon. Science is woefully inadequate in a lot of human related things because of that. Humans change, therefore much of sociology/psychology can become rapidly useless as societies change. Statistical based sciences are the LOWEST form of science, as they are easy to manipulate and can be used to obfuscate the understanding of a phenomenon, another thing sociology and psychology suffer from. That's why both of them have a replication crisis every generation or two, as the BS eventually gets challenged.
If it's not a hard science, I can guarantee you that MOST papers in that area are wrong about at least one thing they say, and there's no easy way to tell what. This is why authoritative science-ism must always be challenged. Science is not about what has most evidence, it's about what is most accurate. And that means even one person could have it more right than the consensus, yet be silenced by consensus. As has happened over and over again in science communities.
Science will be the basis on which all governments will cement their authority, from here on in. It is the best way to achieve classical fascism.

I agree that some documentaries are overdone and glamorized but women have fears that men can't understand and watching/listening to true crime makes us feel less alone. Our fears are validated and we can learn how to protect ourselves by being more aware of risks, red flags and our surroundings. It makes me feel more empowered in a weird way. I also like cases that have an ending because I feel like if something happens to me someone will find justice for me. On top of that I believe people should know the stories of others and be aware of other peoples struggles so you can empathize with others around you.

Have to agree with their philosophy of science talk...
Go back 100-200 years ago, becoming an expert or even a polymath was infinitely easier than now. Specialisation is essential nowadays, and even scientists find themselves relying on experts in other scientific fields for answers. The fact that some people believe they can beat experts in their own field by just reading a few Facebook articles (or the like) shows how deep anti-intellectualism has gone nowadays.
Misinformation campaigns spread like wildfire as they create exciting, black and white, easy to understand answers. Science simply cannot reproduce that excitement, as reality is often unintuitive and complicated.

The thing about watching murder, is that remember our brains evolved, to always be looking out for threats to our lives. When you are watching a murder or morbid event happen, your brain is analyzing the order of events so that if you get in this situation, you can escape with your head still on your shoulders. Basically what I am trying to say is that our brains find threats, than learn how to deal with them so than you can survive. Sorry for the wall of text have a great day!

I don't watch television much these days, but I listen to podcasts and UA-cam videos in the background alot, most of it being either trash taste type content, medical content, true crime or just random stuff. I find, each case that I dive into, has helped me be more aware of my surroundings and such. However it has also made me insanely paranoid of near everything😩 but most people in my physical life don't have a care in the world about their surroundings or any threats so I feel it's an ok level of paranoia, given I've been stalked multiple times😅

1:45:00 I believe this is the availability heuristic, a flaw in our interpretation where what comes quickly to our mind is deemed significant. An example my AP Psych class gave was the fact that if you see a shark attack on the news you believe that they are common because the news put a lot of emphasis on it and it becomes more memorable in your mind, when in reality it's on the news because it's uncommon. So, when we see so so many forms of media that cover murders and horrible acts, when we think of living our own lives those terrible things tend to come to the top of our mind of what could happen to us and we believe that it is more common than it actually is. Sorry if that was a bad explanation, I'm not very good at articulating myself.

Salt is helpful for sore throats if you dissolve it in hot water and gargle it when it’s warm. It’ll heal faster if there are any tears, and I usually drink tea with honey right after. Honey is soothing for the throat and has natural antibacterial properties that’s also been used for cuts and injuries.
I’m glad y’all put the info on the screen, because a lot of home remedies do have data and results that show the medicinal assistance it gives to the body. Most of it just helps with the healing and comfort process, while some can boost your immune system (like vitamin C). It’s not to be treated like medicine or something that’ll prevent you from getting a bacterial or viral illness.
The wasabi treatment sounds absolutely painful! 😣 Spices will always irritate the skin and burn cuts. Some things just require common sense, but we have the internet with medical websites that clarify the myths and facts.

I kind of got the feeling many people could get the wrong idea abt vitamin c and manuka honey from connors takes.
Because I researched a bit about Manuka honey in particular (of course I am no scientist) (because I was also skeptical that it might only be superstition) I kind of feel the need to clarify a little bit: Manuka honey contains a disinfecting chemical - Methylglyoxal. It's basically the main difference between it and other honey kinds. The Manuka tree produces it as an insecticide. As I'm a bit versed in chemistry, I can assure people, that it actually should work against bacteria (most likely) and viruses (maybe less reliable). Because it is a reactive compound, it can actually destroy the membranes of bacteria, etc. Although that also counts for your own cells, so you could actually hurt yourself with really high MGO concentration Manuka honey (more than 300 mg/kg). Which also supports the point that it actually does something. Because if it didn't kill anything, it would also have no adverse effects when ingested in really high concentrations.
I think Connor has a bit of a problem with basically anything natural which should supposedly help your immune system. Of course, there is a lot of quackery in that space, but vitamin C and manuka honey surely aren't the offenders here. Just because vitamin C can help your immune system, that doesn't mean it's some sort of miracle vitamin. Because it's needed for immune activity, it's consumed at a higher rate than normal when you are infected. If you got Vitamin C deficiency, it'll work worse. That also means that if you already got enough of it, taking more literally won't do anything (as your body just ejects anything over normal level).

I think those sayings are meant to have more figurative/metaphorical meaning, than literal. They are likely applicable for older times, with less technological comforts like electric lighting, tap water, penicillin, bandaids.
    I.E.
"Don't whistle at night, or snakes will come out" could be talking about petty thieves, or assaulters.... calling the assailant a "snake" and they're telling you not to whistle, so that you're not announcing/broadcasting your location. (this matters less now in modern times, but could be much more important in older times where light wasn't as easily accessible, and there were more times where people could get caught alone)
"Step on a crack, you'll break your mother's back" could simply be related to hurting your ankle/foot, or just hurting yourself in general because you've tripped, and your mom would have to carry you around or go through a lot of trouble to make sure you don't get sick, or that you heal well. (I imagine that when these sayings originated, a small injury could be more life threatening)

Alright. About the Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an important chemical you need to be healthy and your body doesn’t make it so you have to eat it. It’s important for the maintenance of your collagen, bones, gums, and repair of connective tissue and whatnot. Lack of it or less than optimal amounts of it matters, so if you aren’t there yet, eating food that contains it will benefit you. Once you have enough of it, you don’t get more benefits in the same way that pouring more oil into your car when you’re topped up doesn’t do anything and arguably is bad for your engine. It’s a key vitamin for WOUND HEALING, for obvious reasons. It doesn’t have much of an effect on colds.

So using salt to cure a mouth ulcer is probably only causing more irritation. That said, if we're talking a bacterial infection such as with a bad tooth, hot salt water does help draw out the bacteria and fluids from the bad tooth which relieves the pressure and pain. I've struggled a lot with bad teeth, and can attest to salt water always working on tooth aches.

In November of 2021, my mom informed me that a friend of hers was murdered by her boyfriend. She informed she'd been supposedly texting her friend and the replies coming back didn't quite seem right. Later that day, another friend went to go check up on the woman...to find the house on fire. The whole story didn't take long to unravel. The woman's boyfriend grew jealous at the idea of her leaving him (before she'd even declared she wanted to leave) and shot her, pretended to be the friend on her phone to delay being found out, then set the house on fire. I don't know who called the police, but the man holed up at his father's house and after about a three hour standoff, shot himself like a fucking pussy.
I remember that night, my mom had just returned from being a traveling nurse for the last eight months and had already had a vacation to Las Vegas planned. She hugged me both hello and goodbye for her vacation and had clearly been crying. I...was upset. But also numbed on how to feel. You hear about this level of horror on these true crime shows but what do you do when its become part of your life? I'm in my 30's and I felt awful for not having the words to comfort my mom. Her vacation wasn't much of a vacation at all. Just like she lost her friend the day she came back from workingz the day she came back from vacation was the funeral.
She was supposed to go on another traveling assignment with that friend. She cancelled it because it would've hurt too much at the fact that her friend should've been there with her. I have long since gotten over my true crime brief phase but had I not, the loss of my mom's friend would have done it.

no. I’ve never played n64 as a kid, so I don’t have nostalgia to those games, yet I love the retro feel of it like it’s very atmospheric that a lot of games today can’t pull off. it’s only that style of retro that can pull off that specific atmosphere that I love

Zenith VR, the vrmmorpg you guys were talking about, is already out and it's good. Also, there are a few good vr games out there which you can invest some time into (like Boneworks or multiple online shooters), but I don't blame you for not hearing about them since the vr scene is pretty disconnected from other gaming platforms.

True crime talk, Revy from Black Lagoon taught me a corpse is just an object, nothing else to it, we don't flinch when a lion kills gazelles, we just all flesh and bone, meat is meat

My dentist told me to gargle salt water a few weeks before I got my wisdom teeth removed because I had a mouth infection. It worked and I'm inclined to believe him that it wasn't a coincidence because he is very stubborn on needing evidence there's an issue before he does anything.

gargling salt water is a well-known and widely practiced method of healing mouth and throat infections. Salt kills all bacteria though, so it's not very healthy for the good bacterial flora in your mouth to continue doing it regularly.

My friend shared a video of some Chinese guy getting stabbed 20 or so times in a stadium and then getting dragged away on facebook. That really freaked me out, I deleted my account a week or so later

In terms of that VR and setting it up. Yeah absolutely agree. Thats why I got the quest, makes it so much easier and just pop into a game.

The whole segment about science and how its so far advanced from general knowlegde today is so true. Specialized science has almost gone in a way where its almost contradictory to what we were taught in school, and there are always ways to bend the rules just enough for something that was generally thought to be impossible to be possible.
Tldr: its a crazy world we live in

The talk about morbid curiosity at the end reminded me of a website people were sharing around in the 90s, which basically had a lot of photos from crime scenes or accidents, with horribly mangled bodies in graphic detail from every angle.
I was horrified by that stuff, had nightmares after seeing the result of someone run over by a train that someone showed me for the "haha lulz"
This shit's always been around, folks seeming to be utterly devoid of compassion or empathy to whatever they see or hear, as if they watched some movie plots, or read a fantasy book, maybe it's a defense mechanism for the human psyche? who knows...

Garnt has a point that Vitamin C helps with a cold. Normally when you are sick it is advised to eat oranges and drink lemon-ginger tea. It also helps with sore throat (well it helps me). That’s what my grandma always tells me and i trust her judgment bc she is a nurse 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think a big part of what makes a big part of what stopped Mario 64's visuals from aging as badly as its contemporaries is that the simple shapes look good in the motions the player performs and provide good gameplay clarity

Crime shows, and mystery shows are interesting in the way they story unfolds. I can't watch them if they are just factual. I prefer it when they are told in story form. Consider them cautionary tales.
Warning signs are there for good reasons.
Never travel alone, and certainly not unprepared.
Always let someone know where you are going, and whom you will be with, with an estimate time of return.
In dangerous situations don't freak out.
Lock your house doors if you aren't needing to go in and out.
    Be wary of strangers.
I mean I could go on, but there's common sense to them that people are either oblivious to, or choose to ignore for the ill of themselves.
Some stories have some amazing heroes in them.

In the relatively near future (iirc a year or two) we can buy XR lenses. The screen is still monochrome, but the amount of features they've managed to put into it is amazing.
If they can make it RBG then it would be possible to create a virtual reality by closing your eyes.
There are also prototypes of very lightweight and small VR headsets. So VR will soon be as accessible as smartphones. The current VR headsets are like the small but thick black and white TVs, but we're already approaching the LCD equivalent. So from a corporate perspective it makes sense to develop things like the metaverse so it's ready when VR goggles/glasses/lenses become mainstream.

Metaverse discussion, VR Chat comes up but real estate discussion doesn't even touch SecondLife or Linden Labs? The great virtual sale of land has never worked too well and been aimed at people that have no technical idea what to do there other than make it a copy of the real world.
