Garnt talked about "Annihilation" and asked for something similar. So the plot of this film is actually a copy of the Soviet science fiction novel "Roadside Picnic" written by the Strugatsky brothers in 1972. In the story aliens make an emergency landing somewhere on our planet and fly away, leaving behind an anomalous zone, inside which strange things happen and the laws of physics change. This novel also became the basis for the film Stalker (1979) by Andrei Tarkovsky and the famous game "S.T.A.L.K.E.R".
YES!
And how's the book? is it worth reading? Does it offer a deeper explanation on the topic, or is it as confusing as the movie was?
@@alexandra-vc5wh The book is good, even today, 50 years later. Tarkovsky's movie has little connection with the book (just like his "Solaris" based on the novel by Stanislaw Lem) it's an typical arthouse wih the author's vision of the book.
By the way, Stanislaw Lem has an excellent books on the topic of "first contact": "His Master's Voice", "The Invincible" and "Eden".

if Joey has problems hearing people (esp with competing noise), then his hearing problems may be more so based on an Auditory Processing Disorder (which i have too! and it is a condition that is part of the Deaf & Hard Of Hearing community!). it's where your ears are fine, but the part of your brain that processes noise/language has been impacted. so hearing a car door slam down the street is fine; but trying to hear someone 2 feet in front of you when you can't see their lips is hard. it's why i can't go to loud areas with friends to have a conversation or why i won't understand a new song without the lyrics in front of me or why i cant hear the driver of a car very well when i am in the backseat
i dont know what video about health Joey is talking about, but if the hearing test was just the Beep Test that he got an A on -- that makes sense. there's a lot of criticisms about the Beep Test, esp since it only grades based on the one type of hearing that doesn't require really any processing. you're in a silent room, listening for beeps of usually identical tones. it doesn't test for a lot, even though a lot goes into the ability for humans to hear and process what they hear into properly listening (again, esp in terms of language)
i hope this helps give him a lead towards whatever hearing problem he has, along with anybody who faces similar problems!! Auditory Processing Disorders are a hard thing to test for (mostly bc people who know how to test for it are in low-supply but high-demand, which makes the test $$$), but i hope knowing that It Is A Thing You Could Have helps some people out!
Thanks a lot! I think I have the same problem
Sounds like me as well. Although i have fun with people since I mishear in the worst ways haha
Wow this sounds like me, lol. Thanks for the writeup.

Didn’t know I had this problem until I saw this comment. Now I know why it’s been so hard for me to hear people when they have their masks on. I thought it was the mask muffling their voice but it’s really just the fact that I can’t see their lips.

Living pratically beside the Amazon rainforest, we get very high humidity rates and rain all year, during winter there's rain all day, every day, and then there's summer, which we trade the "every day" for the furnace that it becomes. Disagree. Toxic masculinity ain't real. It's such a derp word
About the season debate: As someone from Finland, winter is the worst. The roads get icy and you have to analyse the road to find the least slippery patch of it, so you trot along at the speed of a penguin and hope you won't slip. Also there's about four hours of sun, and while I like the dark, too much of it gets depressing. Winter's nice to look at, but not to be in.
Vitamin D tablets! Lethargy happens because of the lack of vitamin D. Our skin produces vitamin D from the sun. So Garnt is correct. Also I feel your pain I use to live in Whitehorse Yukon north of the 60th parallel winters were not nice.
I’m glad I don’t live there. I’m so prone to low vitamin D to begin with 😬
As a someone also from Finland, I disagree :') I can full on speedwalk with my winter boots. And also I'm most depressed in summer as I hate the heat and the feeling of sun on my skin. But again we all have different opinions on seasons :)
We don't get it as bad as you guys (I'm from Romania), but the same deal is over here whenever winter rolls around. Any other trip you'd make in the other seasons to get some groceries basically becomes a gauntlet.
And in the city, there's more BS, since no one has any sense of responsibility, so sidewalks are never cleared of snow and sometimes even the streets take a while for crews to get to.
If you own a car, good luck getting to work, you wake up 2 hours in advance to clear it and the spot it's in, only to sit an hour and a half in traffic each way, come back and find your cleared spot taken by someone else.
Then you go to Facebook and see everyone posting dumb motivational quotes with snowy backgrounds and feel like shoveling them in the back of the head...
And then you get to Summer at the end of July where you get 3 days in a row where you get 42 Centigrade in the shade and realistically about 45 the second you step out the door and all you can think of is how good you had it when you were shovelling that snow :|

Mosquitos are VERY relevant to the food chain. A lot of things eat their larvae and in certain ecosystems like the Alaskan tundra, they make up a massive percentage of the overall biomass. I actually agree with Joey's take on horror movies. As a kid I would often watch horror movies with my uncle, typical 2000 - 2013 horror movies like The Descent, The Others, The Amityville Horror, 13 Ghosts, The Messengers, etc. Sure they scared the sh*t out of 10-11 year old me, but nothing scarred me more than Asian horror movies.
You got the original japanese The Grudge (Ju-on), Ringu (The Ring), Shutter, The Eye (Gin Gwai), The Maid (Singaporean film), Chakushin Ari (One Missed Call), just to name a few. Pure nightmare fuel, but the movies were very good horror-wise.
Asian horror movies just have a different feel as opposed to the western horror genre.
Regarding Garnt's request for horror recommendations, I'd suggest Hereditary, Event Horizon, Jacob's Ladder, and Angel Heart. Those are good films where the horror arises from unsettling ideas rather than jump scares.
you mean grant?? fake fan. 😤
Wow....toxic fandom rose quick this time.....also Tucker and Dale vs evil...solid horror comedy
_The Shining_ is also a favorite of mine. Its plot doesn't feature any ideas that haven't been seen in other haunted house films but it does a great job of creating a disturbing and ominous atmosphere.
The recent Color Out of Space movie was good
The original Blair Witch Project too!
I am 90% sure Garnt has seasonal depression, but Connor and Joey are just roasting the shit out of him in confusion
This is very much a thing in Canada, because you barely get any sunlight at all during the winter, and some provinces have winter for 8 months straight.

Seasonal depression is a bitch... I've literally said everything Garnt was saying to other people 😂
Didn’t know you could give a diagnosis based off a passing comment during a tangent on a podcast. How long have you been a therapist for?
@@speedgoblin9985 I think the comment was just poking at it because it's a common comment made by people with seasonal depression. To be fair, Garnt basically described the outline of it in that 'passing comment'.
I grew up in a desert so seeing clouds and water is actually what makes me happy. Too much afternoon sun causes me some slight depression lol (but I normally have my blinds and stuff closed around then so it doesn’t affect me that much)
I like hearing everyones opinions on this 8)
I wholeheartedly agree with gigguk on the summer vs winter thing. As someone who gets seasonal depression, is a gardener, and also works a 9-5 by the water. The winter seasons is the worst.
Garnt: "i'm depressed in Winter."
Me: "just Winter? do you get a discount?!"
Real Talk: Seasonal Affect is a thing, and sucks. I've heard UV lamps can help the lack of sun.
Suicide rates go up in winter for a reason.
Don't use UV lamps though, use light therapy fluorescent light.
UV lamps give you various types of skin cancer, photoallergic dermatitis and lead to premature skin aging, among other things.

same thoughts Gigguk, about going to and from work without experiencing the sunshine. We don't get winters here but when it's rainy days, I get somehow sad/depress. I want my sunshine for the day. Contrary to common thoughts, I'm more of a pessimist, hence I need those bright sun shiny days to cheer me up.
As someone with allergies, hard disagree with Garnt. Winter is amazing. Its cooler, no allergies, no biting or stinging insects, no having to mow the yard. So many positives. I'd rather be cold than hot any day.
As a person who lives in the north - winter depression is real. When sun starts to shine and gets warmer everyone gets happier and more relaxed. I am suprised that Garnt, the person from hot country, gets it. Usually people from hot places don't understand how winters are horrible.

My favourite part about the Emu war was the fact that the Australian military at the time was using tripod mounted, water cooled Vickers machine guns and still were unable to deal the sheer amount of birds, so at one point they actually mounted the guns onto the back of trucks to chase after the birds when they ran away. Despite all of this they still lost the war, and I believe the total loss of ammunition was about 10,000 rounds, which at current price of .303 ammunition is approximate 52 dollars (US) for a box of 20 rounds, 10,000 rounds would require at least 500 boxes of ammo equaling out to 26,000 usd in current market conditions. That is the initial conflict that took place in 1932, later in 1950 the government released another 500,000 rounds of .303 ammunition to farmers to hopefully take care of the problem once and for all.
to be fair it was basically just a few people from the military with a couple of machine guns, tasked with dealing with a massive population of emus across western australia. you can technically say that they "lost" because emus were still an issue to the surrounding crops, but considering those few people killed thousands of birds it seems a bit weird to put it that way imo.

probably already got mentioned, but what Ive read is that the army was brought in vs the emu, and they employed machine guns, and it still wasnt enough
ammunition isn't too expensive if you're just using it for hunting or whatnot, but on a military campaign scale it gets pretty pricey
Lol, I'm a teacher and I feel personally attacked by the Shrek discussion. I teach German and I always watch Shrek in German with my pupils xD
Authentisch! Ich habe hier in Deutschland auch etliche male Shrek in der Schule gesehen xD ist einfach ein guter Film :D
my german teacher always put on shrek (in German) before school let out for summer

Connor and Garnt not knowing that in the South Hemisphere the seasons are the opposite of the North Hemisphere hurts me phisically
Wait what do you mean they are the opposite.
@@thelastquincy1457 it’s basic geology. If one place is day then the opposite place will be night because our planet is a sphere. Same goes with seasons

I love how they casually made fun of Garnt's seasonal depression, lol! My mom admitted that she has it as well here recently. We used to live in Alaska when I was younger but now live in Alabama, where the seasons are more linear. We still get all four seasons but rarely do we get snow for winter. While I miss Alaska, I appreciate not having ti drive through snow now that I'm an adult.
I would definitely watch a stream of Joey playing Final Fantasy 6 quietly.
Ah yes, the classic Nicholas Cage movie, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas where Nicholas Cage portrayed the iconoclastic writer Hunter Thompson. Where Nicholas Cage raises his eye brows, tilts his head skyward and says the famous line “we can’t stop here, this is bat country.” Meanwhile 90s Johnny Depp is crying in a corner somewhere dropping adrenachrome.
thank u for this comment lmao ,, i didn’t wanna be a pretentious film douche but this bit gave me hives
I would watch Fear & Loathing with Nic Cage 😂
@@nemutai3596 Joey was so confident about it too lmao
Plus Garnt was talking about his childhood memories of watching Knowing. That movie came out in 2009?!
I think joey was talking about leaving las vegas and got the movies mixed up?
Nicholas Cage is still acting in movies! He was in Color Out of Space (2019), which, incidentally, is a really good cosmic horror inspired by an H.P. Lovecraft story. Later this year, he'll play the hero in a movie called Prisoners of the Ghostland. He was in a bunch more movies just in the last year, but they pretty much all straight-to-video.
so hype for Prisoners of the Ghostland. Love me some batshit insane Sion Sono and with Nic Cage? Match made in cinema heaven
“Wendy” was also a pretty recent great Cage movie and Lovecraftian to an extent
Don't forget his very measured performance in Pig.

Right that shirt is fresh!
IKR! I want that shirt ^^
Joey got drip too, don’t disrespect
Bruv have you not seen Chris with the backwards cap mans drip game after that episode was insane
I can't believe Joey can look his friends directly in the face and tell them that the Wicker Man, a movie where Nicolas Cage dresses up in a bear fur suit and punches a woman in the face, has nothing going for it beyond the "Not the BEES" scene.
I will stand for this no longer.
I’m surprised your not up in arms on them hating on winter from what I see from your profile picture.
Winter all the way!
When they talked about the Emu war I felt cultured as hell coz I came here right after watching the latest Puppet history episode :D
Being from somewhere with cold winters, and hot, muggy summers, fall is the best season by a long shot.
The boys live in a parallel world where Nicolas Cage is Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas 😂
I thought the same thing lmaoooo
The genre garnt is talking about is called cosmic horror! I’m really into this genre and I’ve watched a lot of movies based on it. Annihiliation is one of those rare few movies that does cosmic horror right! since it is a better piece media via written because it’s hard to portray unthinkable unnatural beings visually
Any recommendations?

52:52 Lovecraftian is the word you're looking for to describe it, sometimes it's just called "cosmic horror"

Should probably also be noted that Color out of space was an adaptation of a lovecraft novel with the same name.
To this day, whenever I watch a movie with my parents and a kissing scenes comes on my dad says something like "oh, come on, they can't do this"... And I'm 27

I can’t believe Connor and Garnt actually thought winter was the same months in both northern and southern hemispheres
That was so insane to me lmao
how can you be in your 20s and still not know that
The fact that they thought winter was just a time of year rather than a season actually explains so much about how many people think about time in the northern hemisphere though. As an Aussie it's always slightly annoyed me how often films/games are advertised as releasing "next summer" and I always have to stop for a second and think about when summer is going to be in the northern hemisphere. Why can't they just say a game is coming out in June, or Q2 or something?! haha
I truly didnt know that was kind of a mindset in the North Hemisphere hahaha Im from South America, and it did caught me off guard
@@MatuteroGaming the fact they haven't learned to think about seasonal differences in hemispheres makes me think that they don't understand much about geology or much of the technicalities that govern the world in large
Living in a costal Texas city I can absolutely say the humidity makes the already unbearable heat even worse

I live in the Hill Country now, when but when I go visit my parents in Houston I am always shocked that I lived that way. Like, we just didn't know any different.
What direction does the wind come from at your coastal city? I work outside at Santa Monica. The ocean wind carries away some of the humidity, so it isn't too bad
I can second that from the mountains of NC. Worst days are the ones where it rains for 20 min and then the temperature jumps to 98. You need a snorkel to go for a walk it’s so humid.
I live in Southeast Texas and absolutely not. Dry heat is 100% worse than humid heat. I would much rather it be humid than dry thx

the only way you can watch Hereditary is either in theatres or in a completely dark and sound proof room with a screen set to the correct color and contrast. this isnt due to some Christopher Nolan "you need to whole theatre experience" bullshit. no its because there are 2 scares in the movies that ONLY WORK in the EXACT LIGHTING. nothing jumps out at you, they are literally stagnant but you need the PERFECT LIGHTING to see it.
i watched it in theatres and i remember people all freaking out at different intervals to these scares because it was so hard to register. but when i watched it at home, i couldnt see it and my friends with me never saw it so i had to explain what the scare was suppose to be.
What is the correct color and contrast for Hereditary? We were supposed to watch it last Monday but ended up watching Red Blood Sky lol
For Garnt (and anyone else interested), if you enjoyed Annihilation there's a good chance you'll enjoy The Mist (2007 movie).
It's a sci-fi horror that has a very unsettling ending.
"While they can seem pointless and purely irritating to us humans, mosquitoes do play a substantial role in the ecosystem. Mosquitoes form an important source of biomass in the food chain-serving as food for fish as larvae and for birds, bats and frogs as adult flies-and some species are important pollinators."
- Smith Sonian Mag
Literally every animal that feeds on mosquitos has mutiple other sources of food that are much easier to aquire. Same goes with wasps. Except wasps are even worse than mosquitos because they kill bees for no reason. Also mosquitos have the potential to annihilate the human race so they should be extinct af
I feel like it's kind of crass to just say "animal X should be extinct because it has no use". Animals don't need to have any use to exist. Humans have no use whatsoever, how are we the judge of which animals are worthy of existing and which don't?
