@@brownbricks6017 as a psychologist student who's been through the study by Sperry on the patients with split brains, I feel somewhat confident in answering this lol. Essentially, yes your mind communicates on both sides, through the nerve they mentioned in the episode (I don't remember it's actual name). There's different parts of the brain, and they each have a localised function kinda, and these can work in tandem so you understand your surroundings. In Sperry's split brain theory, the communication between the parts of the brain can't occur because the corpus callosum (I think that's the name) was separated, when an eye was closed, the parts of the brain couldn't communicate. So some part of the brain could name the item, but couldn't describe it. And the other side of the brain can describe the item but couldn't name it. These things do communicate usually, through having both eyes look at the object or your brain communicating with itself. It's really interesting and I don't think I explained it too well lol.

Psychologist here, would love if a neurologist or psychiatrist can confirm these. Honestly, Connor was on point about dissociative identities (what they called split personality, we don't use that term anymore) being a result of trauma response. It is considered as one of the most significant factors. As far as removing one half of the brain is concerned, it's only performed in childhood and is a rare procedure used to treat Epilepsies. The brain then reorganizes itself as the child grows up. The left-right hemisphere argument is not that simple too. While some mental processes are localized in the left or right hemisphere, there is no evidence to one side being more dominant than the other in different people. Basically, they weren't completely talking out of their respective asses.

    • @yato_kami0

As a "philosophist" student (which ironically sounds like a mesh between philosopher and sophist and Aristotle was actually very anti sophist even though he could be considered one,) pretty much this whole episode brought me pain but especially the philosophy part holy fuck...
Aristotle was certainly not the first philosopher nor did he invent thought. If anything Aristotle came like 300 years after who we think of as the first Greek philsopher, namely Thales. Aristotle was also the student of Plato who was the student of Socrates and all 3 have had a huge impact on Western philosophy and Western thought in general (think of concepts like the soul and life after death in Christianity). I think Aristotle's theory on intellectual thought would be that before we just didn't really have time to think, being able to philosophise especially as your occupation is a privilege. I mean most Greek philosophers were people who were well off, because although in many Greek poleis all free men received education in their youth, to become an academic and get a higher education you needed money to pay for classes (and also not starve).
On Connor's theory, whilst some conquerors did burn books etc. it wasn't like an universal thing and the reason we have less sources of some societies is because some really did write down more than others or in ways that are easier for us to interpret now. We have lost so many sources and books from amazing thinkers and things that would give us much more insight into the past. In fact, all of Aristotle's surviving works are lecture notes by him or his students or other types of notes whilst all of his published books have been lost forever.
Anyway, in general I wouldn't say people never thought about their life before that but everyday philosophising and thinking about life and existence is not the same as academical philosophy.
Furthermore, philosophy and religion aren't all that similar! Surely you do have some religious philosophers, though it's arguable how philosophical they are, but religion depends on faith and blind belief. Even arguments for God presuppose the belief of God whilst philosophy is all about having good arguments and finding the truth through reason.
One last thing, heck yeah philosophy is important, as Garnt said it's literally shaped the way we think about things now and is also the origin of all intellectual inquiry and thus science!

While I'm not an expert by any means, I studied history for a while and took a few philosophy classes (one was specifically on Plato and Socrates) and I found it extremely fascinating.
Now watching the boys throw these statements and theories about philosophy around was quite funny.

Btw- the understanding of human behaviour and mind have always been a topic throughout history. Plato was the first one to mention how humans have a soul and that is the essence of a person being and behavior. The soul have many functions according to Plato, but he also describes it as the human`s psyche basically. Psychology finally became a field on its own after science became the acceptable method of studying the psyche as we know of today. Slay.

I have synesthesia so I’m going to explain how it is for me:
I associate colours with different people and objects. For example: Connor is purple, Garnt is green, Joey is orange, the number 20 is orange, South Korea is pink, the month of June is yellow and the year 2004 is blue. I don’t really know why anything gets their colour, it just pops into my head when I think of it. I’m sure I could spot patterns if I made a list of everything and it’s colour but the only 2 patterns I’m aware of is that orange and green are the most popular colours and pink, white and black are the rarest colours
When it comes to how I actually visualise these colours, it depends on what I’m associating the colours with.
For people and tangible objects: I imagine the colour as an aura around that person or object.
For intangible objects or concepts: I imagine that thing being made out of the colour. As a few examples: when thinking of the number 7 I imagine the number being written in red, time is a white mist, gravity is a purple neon-like glow, the sound of a violin is a brown line, death is a grey duvet and hunger is an orange ball in your stomach
Something else I want to point out, I don’t actually “see” these things with my eyes. It’s more like whenever I mentally visualise something, it just comes surrounded with their colour. For an example: when I imagine Connor I see him floating in a purple void

That’s interesting, I’ve always visualized colors with people like the “aura” you described (I’ll see or sense it around them), but I don’t think it’s synesthesia. I’ve always thought my mind was connecting a person’s energy and personality with colors that match. Same with words or objects. If it’s coming from my mind, I think it’s just my creative perspective coming into play. It doesn’t happen 24/7 just when I want to visualize it.

Hey as a historian I would like to share some of my thoughts regarding the issues brought up in the video! Also I am always glad to hear Connor talk about history in episodes its always very fun!
First of all Aristotle or Socrates are quite famous but many others were notable too, coming before them. They belong to different schools of thought and have different specilizations. (Adding a small detail as we are talking about sources Socrates never wrote any of his speeches down. The actual source we have is from Plato who was his student, so when we apply theories to Socrates some of it is Plato's actual thoughts. )
As for sources and how they are preserved :
Connor's point about respecting the culture before them really applies to the change from the Hellenistic Period/Kingdoms (Alexander the Great conquering all those places) to the Roman Empire. The Romans were very much inspired by the Ancient Greeks in various ways such as theater, philosophy, rhetorics, art and religion.
As for the sources themselves , some books might have been in circulation more, we might have stuff because kids used to have to write it down for their homework for generations.
Other times rich people asked their copywriters to save a specific book of an author because they enjoyed their work. In medieval times scriptoria existed doing just that, copying down ancient greek or roman sources in monasteries.
Also most of the time we don't have a whole work of an ancient greek writer e.g. There are several times we just have fragmemts of the source because another author just cites them. That can be seen in the famous classical greek tragic writers like Euripides, we have just few of his works and sometimes his play didn't even win but we don't have the ones that won.
As for the fall of the Roman Empire and how stuff has been preserved. Well we are still missing ton of it but, the Roman Empire was split into two. The West and the East. When the 'barbarians' such as germanic tribes or the Hunns, took over Rome (which happened a bunch of times) it wasn't just this part of the Empire that preserved stuff. The Eastern Roman Empire so the Byzantines as they were called later still kept going and greek was also the main language at that side of the Empire because it had spread during the period Alexander the Great was just going to places and establishing his empire.
Likewise when the Byzantine Empire fell in 1453 to the Ottomans, many philosophers or knowledgable and established people of that time fled to Italy.
So how sources are preserved? There is either tons of it, someone tends to want them to be around, authors cite and include part of older sources in their own work stuff is copied down.
Also I have talked about the Greeks/Romans alot because it my expertise but in the Arabic world, there were also several translations of ancient sources that were passed down.
Also!! The materials used to record stuff in is very important on how its going to be preserved from papyrus to parchement to rocks to paper. Papyrus for example can only be preserved in very specific climatic conditions.
That is just some info I wanted to share :] its not too detailed but it has some pretty important bits. Once again my focus is on the general mediterranean area so that is analyzed more here! :)
Thank you guys for another lovely episode appreciate all you do!

Good post! And adding to your last point, human beings have been weird, creative, introspective apes forever. All civilizations have had some form of thinking about the world, usually codified into their religion though not always. But as Connor mentioned, peoples from the middle east, from all over Asia, from all over Africa, from the numerous indigenous groups have passed down traditions of thinking and asking questions and patterned understandings about the world. Much of it was preserved orally, and that requires a lot of concerted effort to maintain that across hundreds of generations. Unfortunately, the Western powers that shaped what would become our framework for modern academia often devalued oral traditions and that's just one thing that's led us to a point where we have a Euro-centric bias in our education against learning about these other traditions. Even in an era of mass globalization! But the traditions do exist and have many illuminating things to tell us about the human experience. I mean, hell, there are tons of ideas that have been discovered or invented simultaneously in different parts of the world!
As a funny aside, most Intro to Philosophy courses will have a section on "the Pre-Socratics" too, which makes Joey's rant quite funny even in the context of the Greeks.

lol just wanna get a word in for connar about the two sides of the brain thing since I studied this in psychology - first of all, the main reason for disconnecting both sides of the brain through surgery is epilepsy, because epilepsy is caused by the brain firing messed of signals in a somewhat out of control manner and for some types of epilepsy severing the connections between both sides basically cures them completely, and there are almost no real world effects of this. the reason there's almost no real world effect is because while each side of the brain can't communicate anymore generally speaking they will normally receive pretty much the same information, and people who have had this operation basically cannot tell a difference besides not having epilepsy anymore.
however, the scientists who came up with this ran a series of very clever and very simple little experiments to better understand how the brain functioned and if some functions were isolated to individual sides of the brain (because they already knew there were two sides with a few major connections between them as they had just chopped those connections in half). there's a lot of interesting stuff to do with these you can read up on but some of these experiments involve stuff like showing a word to only one eye and asking participants to draw it (as we know that the eyes are connected to only one side of the brain each, but normally the two sides can communicate for information processing). the participants found that when the word was shown to the right side of their brain (which is the left eye because the body is weird and annoying like that), they could not say the word for what it was. but they found that they could draw the object with the left hand (controlled by the right side of the brain because humans). however, when this object was shown to the left eye, they could easily identify it and say what it was, but they were unable to draw it. this and experiments like it are what has led to a consensus that a lot of general processes in the brain are actually isolated to one side, for example the language and word processing part of our brain is found on the left side and the image and visualisation part on the right side.

One advantage I feel is that you end up with a really good memory. You kind of have to when it's really difficult to explain specifically how you remember certain things. I think everyone has a preferred way to memorize things, but synesthesia does get glorified. In reality it's like, "...it's the warm-colored pointy thing to the top-right of your periphery. And it's specifically this big."
Edit: I guess if Connor reads this thread. It’s not as if WHAM! huge shapes block your vision when you hear music.
But for example, if I listen to an old nostalgic song I’ll visualize the same things. Likewise sometimes seeing those shapes remind me of the song. So, it’s kind of just an attribute that you tie to something. It can be as specific as the visualization being different if it’s a recorded sound versus in-person.

The Synesthesia thing, I experience it with touch. Not universal but there are sensory stimuli that feel like textures or bodily sensations, especially sounds and visuals that bring up textures. A few examples:
Light green/teal things feel like mosaics
Red feels like a thick liquid
Brown/terracota/ocre colors are like gripping a porous hard substance
Yellow is like crunching a piece of toast
Certain shrill sounds are like an intense aggressive itch on the inside of my lower gums
Some very bassy sounds are like a piece of hard material pushing from the inside of my ribcage, expanding
The taste of coffee feels like a divider down the middle of my head
Certain deep blues feel sponge like in the palm of my hand and the bottom of my feet
There are some very specific shades of yellow that make me itch on the inside of my elbows
    Greys feel like glass
Just a quick note: It is not consistent in frequency and intensity and surely there are some that I cannot recall rn (it’s really late in the night so there may be some mistakes in writing, apologies in advance) but the sensations are consistent across different forms of similar stimuli, and they can get really intrusive if too strong. When shit hits the fan dark colored/dimly lit and silent environments are bliss. And yes, I’m on the spectrum

      @Martoth0 Рік тому +72

I thought your comment was really interesting and I guess I could say it struck a chord with me so I've decided to contribute with my two cents, here it is:
Yeah, I agree that Connor is a good counterpoint presenter. Like he said himself he likes playing the devil's advocate and I think that he is naturally really good at it, at fact checking people I mean. Personally, I wouldn't say he did any better than Joey or Garnt in terms of argumentation though.
The way I see it, if that was the case he wouldn't have to do his fact checks so often to begin with because I feel like a lot of those only came from miscommunication or misunderstanding from both parts. While Connor is like a great filter, (yeah, that's how I'm gonna call him lol) meaning all the takes are to be taken apart and analysed for any bullshit in them, Joey is best at coming up with creative takes and ideas. I feel like if it was like those edits where it's 'Trash Taste but it's only Connor' the arguments would just become stale for lack of new and creative additions to the conversation or not go anywhere because everything would be met with a wall of nothing but disbelief. On the other side, while joey is great at coming up with new takes and generating good discussions if it was 'Trash Taste but it's only Joey' the conversation would just be a bunch of ideas that albeit interesting, ended up just being silly, unfounded takes that haven't been helped out of their infant cocoons and properly flashed out.
I said before that a lot of Connor's counterpoints only happened because of miscommunication or misunderstandings. The reason I think that's the case is because, in my perception, Joey wasn't necessarily wrong with his takes, he was just, in a sense, too dumb to think through them and then explain them properly and Connor was, in a sense, also too dumb to notice the root of Joey's idea and what he was actually trying to say and, because of that, fixated purely on the badly thought out words that came out of Joey's mouth, creating a disagreement that wouldn't necessarily have had to exist, which withheld the flow of the conversation that could've flowed better and developed more otherwise.
That's just what I thought of if though, based on your comment. Feel free to disagree with me, I'm not gonna snap at you, I'm not a salty UA-cam replier.

For example, when someone tells you to close your eyes and imagine a scene, you could see that "image" with your eyes closed or open. You can acknowledge that it's there, but it doesn't block your vision or if it's audio play in your ear louder than whatever is physically around you.

To enlighten you, I have synesthesia. Basically, to better describe what Joey was saying by “you see those colors”, it isn’t something you have to think about. Those colors just mindlessly appear in your head whenever you think of that concept in particular, and those colors are the same every time. One concept I don’t think they touched upon is being able to visualize exceedingly abstract concepts. This is just in my case, but whenever I think of numbers to add or subtract, I always envision them being on some kind of plane, and being in a certain area, which isn’t a straight line. It definitely gets weird when I think too hard about it, cos then I realize that it’s not something I’d ever be able to draw or describe to someone else, but synesthesia can touch upon more abstract concepts like this that may be hard to describe to someone without synesthesia.
Edit: also, to further explain what Joey meant, synesthesia doesn’t cause things to actually appear in your vision. Like, I obviously know that I’m not seeing these things physically, but I still see them in front of my eyes, thanks to my mind imagining them.

So the Ship of Theseus iirc goes a little like this: Theseus is the captain of a ship and he is very meticulous with maintenance. When a plank of his ship shows wear and distress, he replaces the plank. When the mast bends and warps, he replaces the mast. When the sail gets torn beyond mending, he replaces the sail. Eventually the entirety of the ship is replaced. On the pier, there is an enthusiastic and obsessive curator of all things Theseus, and he assembles the ship piece by piece for his collection. A few years go by, and Theseus decides having a wooden ship is too much effort, so he goes out and buys a fibreglass ship with a copper bottom. So the question is: which ship is the real Ship of Theseus? Is it the original one, laden with memories of Theseus? Is it the one that Theseus built himself? Or is mere ownership enough to make it the Ship of Theseus?

It's obvious when paying attention but just subtle enough that it's more like in the mind most of the time. For me, it's almost like the keyboard changes colors as I play. But it's not like the colors blind me from my other perceptions, instead almost being like things glowing a certain hue or highlighted color - for example, f sharp minor is a crimson red while g minor is royal blue; D flat major is yellow and pearl white while d minor is yellowish-orange. ‘How concepts work?’ And also misunderstanding, they aren’t trying to be wrong or off on a topic, they aren’t experts so what do you expect? It’s not a science podcast

@@dead_pool7518 No one said they’re experts, but that doesn’t meet you can’t be frustrated with their inability to understand things.

Considering Connor is often the one who gets concepts very wrong but vehimently defends his pov, I always get "oof" moments at his frustrations.

@@MaJuV he is just the one who has really strong opinion on sometimes really wrong things, he is consistently the most scientific of the bunch through out all episode

@@oldcowbb It is true that he has the most scientific pov of the trio. But that doesn't take away that he can be very wrong and still defend his wrong points as if they were right.

I think any other Aussie can agree with this, I really want an uncensored clip or montage of Joey blasting the C word.

So I have associative synesthesia, which is more common that full on synesthesia. Famous example is artist Wassily Kadinski. I’ve been playing piano since I was six and have as long as I can remember a strong association of certain colours to certain notes (and in extension, some chords). For example, C is bright yellow, D is red, E is orange, F is green etc. This has been consistant all my life and is not just imagined, but an inevitable association. I do not have perfect pitch though so I can’t just hear a note without reference and see the colour, I need to know what note it is, but I have pretty good relative pitch so only knowing one is enough to hear the rest (in context).
Currently doing a masters in composition! Hit me up if you want any music or arrangements!

Eyesight going bad is instantaneous and Gradual at the same time.
I also don't remember having good eyesight but I also remember having better than what I have now.
Also, when I first wore glasses when I was 7, It felt like sun just became brighter 😂😂... Everything just looked HD af. I started seeing tiny flowers and all at the tip of these plants around my home and all of a sudden shit started looking colourful coz the flowers had colours 😂😂😂
