This brings back alot of memories i had this monitor in 1989 but it didn't talk I remember you had to calibrate the monitor Everytime you opened up a vial of new test strips and it took a large drop of blood to sit on the test strip for a minute before wiping of the blood then would compare the color of the test strip to the color code on the side of the vial before putting it in the monitor for the reading. The machine would have to be cleaned often to keep the readings accurate, today's blood monitors are much more user friendly and probably more accurate. Thank you! For the great video.

It would be a funny video for you to call Accu-Chek and see if they would send you an upgraded meter from the Accu-Chek freedom to and see what they say on video

My first meter was an Ames. I had to rinse blood off with water and pat it with tissue. It to 60 seconds to show results. The whole process took over 7 minutes.

Mine was an Ames Glucometer II, in 1987. I can't remember if I had to rinse the blood off with water but definitely had to blot it off. I remember always worrying I wouldn't get it blotted and into the machine in time.

Oh my goodness....I remember this. I had this when I was diagnosed at age 7. Mine didn't talk and wasn't in that huge case. It was just the meter and strips :) SO glad for the technology we have today.

I had a potty chair well after I needed it because of this. My mom remembers having to use a vial to mix the urine in to see the sugar levels

    • @chipblake3708
      @chipblake3708 2 роки тому

Those old urine sticks measured how much glucose you were passing through your kidneys, not what your current blood glucose numbers were. It was only an indication of your control, not how high or low you were at the moment. The devices we have now to control our levels are truly amazing compared to those days. If we had the current technology then that we do now a lot of us old timers would be in far better health. As a 50+ year insulin dependent diabetic I can only imagine how my life would be different now if I’d had todays tools back in the early days.

My first meter was very similar! I didn't have to plug it in, but it was huge... I will have to post photos one day when I find the old ones, because I saved them. I had to put blood on the strip, wait so long, blot it off, then put it in the machine, wait some more...

Wow, sounds like a pain but definitely a major breakthrough to have anything at that time to check BG. Prior to that it was mostly just checking for ketones and other methods.
My grandfather's brother who was older than him (born in 1917) had Type 1 and likely had it from around the advent of Insulin. He ended up living to 93 but I can't imagine the kind of archaic methods he used just to survive and monitor his health. Things sure have come a looooonngg way.

@@tashainjena That actually is true. My Diabetes specialist told me that back in the old days, they didn't have disposable needles, so they had these huge needles and had to sterilize them each time by boiling them in water and then re-shaping them back into form. Pretty rough stuff!

When personal testing first started the lancing devices were pretty similar to what we still have available. There was something that was supposed to look like what you referred to as the poker, but it looked kind of like one of those devices that an umpire holds to keep track of strikes and balls. When you released the trigger on it, it slammed into your finger and you got quite a bit of blood (probably would have worked great with the meter you were testing in this video). I can't remember if there were different brands of test strips, but you did have to use the color system (like on the side of the container holding the strips) to get your blood sugar range and that device that slammed the lancet into your finger often helped to cause you to get infected fingers, from testing (I'm guessing due to the damage it was causing when it slammed with such force). I think the earlier readers that gave a digital read-out were still considerably larger than the what is out there now, but the earliest ones were available to those who had additional disabilities or illnesses and those who were expecting, since they would have the greatest need. When the smaller meters first became available, you had to turn in your old meter, in order to get a new one without having it cost you a whole lot of money too (that was back when insulin pumps were similar in size to the TI-84 calculator).

That was my first meter (1986)! They sent me home from the hospital with it after diagnosis. I didn’t have all the vision-impaired stuff; just the basic meter which apparently slides into the red slot to enable the vision-impaired features. Sadly, mine received zero radio stations. Thanks for a great, entertaining video.

The wiring must not be shielded too well or wrapped in plastic. That will cause it to pick up on outside frequencies.

After I wash with warm to hot water and dry I rub my hands together until they start to feel warm. I stick the side of the finger instead of the tip. I also don't have to go as deep to get blood and it doesn't hurt as much and stops hurting a lot sooner.

I was diagnosed in the early 90s as a young kid and I remember having a big glucose meter at one point. Big enough that it took a AAA or AA battery and not some small little flat watch battery like today. And it would take 20 to 30 seconds to get the results unlike five seconds today on most meters.

Hey Danica it's me Sam. I do remember those huge things back in the '80s I was much younger back then so I was not diabetic I was not even hypertensive boy those were my younger years right I wish I could go back now I got to deal with a lot of stuff anyway. My grandfather had one of these big monster glucometers let me just call it that it involved a lot just to get it going that error that you are getting was somewhat common back in the days. I'm not sure what causes it. Glucometers have come a long way since then now there's sleek small they fit in your pocket. There are still some talking glucometers today being the fact that I'm visually impaired I have one it's called the expression or something like that it's a very simple bare Bones meter but it has that audio feature to it. That's rather interesting that it would be picking up the global Catholic Network broadcast that can happen from time to time with certain electronic devices they'll actually get that radio frequency interference. It was very nice of you to show this big bulky device so that people today can see what it was like back then to check your blood sugar.

I got the update for the iPhone application via an application update from from the App Store. Apparently the pump needs an update as well. I have been checking with Tamdem daily for the last few days and it tells me no updates are available or something to that extent. Will keep checking for awhile and then call Tamdem. I'm not in the beta program.

@@dwightl5863 Oh, I see, so you weren't invited to the beta program either? I got an email last month that said I was invited and to wait for an email in the coming weeks. Last time I spoke to a rep, she said it appeared a week ago that they were slowly starting the rollout and it would be about 1-2 week period of rollout before it stops. So, if I didn't get the official invite to update my pump and further instructions, I could call them to make sure they are working on it.
However, all of this is subjective because I'm only going off her internal wording (can't verify) as to that she was pretty sure the roll-out for official pump updates was happening that Friday, the 8th of July. So, 1 week passed and I didn't see anything, so I'll wait until end of this week to ask them about it again.
If you didn't, however, actually get notified that you were invited for the Beta version of the update then you likely won't be able to get the actual update until its officially released likely in the Fall. Their phone line also says they're no longer taking applicants for the beta.
