How To Clean & Restore Coolant Tank - PERMANENTLY
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 вер 2020
- Its been 5 years and I haven't cleaned my car coolant tank, therefore, I decided to use an easy method to clean it.
Things I used in cleaning:
1. H₃NSO₃ - Sulphamic Acid Mixture;
2. Sonax Ultra Cleaner;
3. Dishwasher salt;
It was the hardest to get the results was the yellowness of the coolant tank. Scrubbing is dead useless here, since the yellowness you can see on coolant tanks is the result of a chemical reaction. The only solution is to whiten bleach out the ugly yellow color out of the coolant expansion tank. - Авто та транспорт
Thanks man! ... Now I have the cleanest 1999 dodge Dakota coolant tank in town.
My neighbors keep coming over to check it out and sometimes they take pictures..
video or fake haaha
How sad are your neighbours when they have nothing better to do than photograph your coolant tank. Maybe compulsive lying is your thing.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love the sarcasm!!!
Lmaoo
I love how this went over so many people's heads 😂
Nice job. Helpful for those of us driving 20+ year old cars.
I'm restoring a 46 year old truck this video is just what I was looking for, thanks!
Work?
Did it work ? You Jesuitt Priest
@@fgrau7376 yes it did, but I'm no priest and I'm not a Jew
did it work?
I wanted to thank you. After several different levels of attempts, soaps, bleach, and had minimal success with acetone and bolts, I went to a home store and got some of your recommended sulfamic acid crystals ( in the flooring grout section). I mixed it to medium concentration in the tank, then again the next day at high concentration rate for the last little dirty patches inside of the tank. I did agitate it a few times to get the deep carbon builds and rust stains out, but just sitting overnight full did most of the work. Much improved! Greatly appreciate it.
Did you try vinegar and baking soda? That usually is good at removing tough stuff.
great job , I see the need for this when your restoring something and can't buy a new one . I see the comments from others here that don't get it ! I appreciate your time .
Right i found one on ebay for my car for 138 dollars for a coolant reservoir. This is much cheaper.
EXCELLENT! Just another 29,999 parts to do and the car will be as good as the day it drove out the showroom :)
You mean eggsellent*.
Excellent Info !
Since the Sulfamic Acid won't react to plastic, would this be an excellent way to clean a gas tank (a removed gas tank off a small vehicle), my 97 Altima has been sitting up so long with some gas in it, when I replaced the fuel pump (because it stopped working) the fuel pump stopped working because of varnish goo in the gas, so I have to remove the tank and clean it, scrub it actually, that is how thick the varnish film is, must be scrubbed. Im thinking, to pouring enough of the acid in the tank to submerge the bottom, let it sit for 24 hrs later, then flip it and let it sit for another 24 hours, then rinse it out with some baking soda and water to change the remaining acid to a base.
What do you think? Good Idea or Bad Bad Idea - and if Bad can you explain why?
Thanks for you help, very much apprecated!
Could you share what's the activator? And also the dilution medium and ratio for the mixture? Thank you very much in advance!
I could see on an older car where a new part is obsolete this could be the answer. Nice one!

Love the dishwasher scene 🤣 brave man.
Braver if he did that by hand.
This is amazing my guy.
I will have to try this when I'm working on my audi with it's freaking ninety dollar coolant reservoir.
Wow the acid removed all the scratches and even changed the manufacturer numbers also.
LOL
Can you put the time stamps for those?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Restoring the coolant tank costed me more then an new one, had to buy acid and a dishwasher
Same thing with my forks and spoons!
Justin H same with water
Can continue the same for all parts
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
But you had the pleasure of doing the work at least!!
I was more interested in the comment section, but now im going to clean coolant tank, lol
hello, congratulations for the video. Could you tell me what is the concentration of acid in the solution used for cleaning in the video?
Cleanest Tank I Have Ever Seen!!....Good Job!!
The dishwasher part was a great touch 👍👍
For those who are asking, sulfamic acid can be bought at a hardware big box store in crystal form. It's normally used to clean rust and grout and mortar haze. A 1lb. tub of sulfamic crystals is less than $8. All you do is follow the instructions and dissolve it in water. Plastic itself is non-reactive to acids; that's why containers for acid products are made of plastic (and it's cheaper than glass and won't shatter). Plastic is engineered to be fairly resistant to many solvents, so you're not going to run into trouble with it being chemically damaged unless you start using things like acetone or paint stripper.
Does it have the same effect if you don’t have the activator?
@@joaspereira5258 Or you could do what the video poster actually did, and just buy a new tank. The extra nipple fittings magically turned from brass to plastic. It is a fake video in an attempt to get views. It is ridiculous.
@@Bobbywolf64 agreed its fake
@@Bobbywolf64 Wow, great observation. Thanks. I watched it but kept thinking, " I'd just buy a new one".
Will sulfamic acid work on a plastic gas tank for a snow blower? Need to remove old gas varnish from 1.
man that looks more new than brand new.. great work
This is a good video missing some VERY crucial details. 1) what is the H3NSO3 Activator? Nowhere on here or the inter web can I find any details on what that is. 2) what is the concentration of the H3NSO3??? I just wasted $14 on some H3NSO3 for a translucent fuel tank cleaning with Zero results after 24 hours. I imagine a lot of other people are going to have the same results without this crucial detail. Is it 3/4 cup per gallon? Stronger or weaker. It would be easy to add what you used to the description. Thanks.
I agree !!!
It's PROBABLY a typo and just ordinary H2SO4 (sulfuric acid).
Thanks. Great video. Straight to point and no annoying music.
👍
but we have no clue about what he is doing.
Silent video. Only the owner of this video knows what he is doing. Great job !!!! Bravo!!!!
And no body benefit any thing too 😡
Love the inside dishwasher part ! :)
I can not find a dishwasher CAM online! Maybe the back is cut out and sealed plexiglass install.
Does the light go out in the refrigerator when you close the door? Hummm!

Hi there
I bought 1 kg of sulfamic acid in the form of a powder. In what proportions should you mix it in 10 liters of water?
I want to whiten the coolant tank from my Porsche 944 in a large bucket
The result is awesome!! Been trying ways to do that. I thought you've bought a new tank in this video~🤣
It took hours for this man to clean a reservoir but took me 2 hours to clean and restore shine to the whole engine bay
Impressive result and something I will use restoring cars.
Thanks !
Great job! Now you have to be so thorough with the rest of the vehicle.
In the beginning of your video you said use sulfamic acid activator and shake for 2 minutes before moving to the second step but I cannot find anything called sulfamic acid activator. Did you use peroxide or what did you use that you were calling the activator?
I now know what it looks like, inside a dishwasher, during a cycle! Lmao 😅 That's awesome 👍 great video
My exact thoughts
That’s the first thing I did with my GoPro
First video I’ve taken the time to comment and like in a long time. 👌🏽
Can anyone here share the mixing ratio of water and the acid? is it 1 to 1 or 1 to 2? Thanks in advance to anyone who can share!
Please: What's the first spray? What is the product that you wash inside first? Whats the concentration on the Peroxide? Do you mix with water or plain? Cheers.
Great video. How did you get the camera crew into the dishwasher ?
😂
I like the "Vision On" TV show style filming.
Great video, but a little detail explaining concentration of H₃NSO₃ in the water-acid mixture would definitely bring some clarity and eliminate the guesswork.
Thanks for answering
Absolutely agree with you
if you go blind and your skin melts off than the concentration is too high
Yeah NS, cleans up nice , if I was a mind reader , I could do the same thing , but I'm not a chemist and googling a product with such chemicals and obtaining them , It would have been more helpful to tell me amazon or rock auto sells new replacement for $XX.oo amount online with a link , lmao
what kind of chemistry is this
The pinkish red coolant in my 2014 Camry always looks super clean. Car runs great. Never overheats. Does the reservoir coolant circulate all the time?
Uses same acid as used in Lime-A-Way. Can this be used as a substitute if you have it on hand?
what chemical did you use & for how long was the plastic container dipped. Thanks for the sharing the good idea
Great job at contaminating your dishwasher. 👍
Those carcinogens lingering in the dishwasher are going to really add that flavour we all sought after to your foodware!
Can clean one using Red Devil crystal lye with clorox added. Any hydrocarbons, glycerins such as ethylene glycol are rendered with the lye, just as lye and fats/oils are used in soap making, and the clorox is a bleaching agent that actually adds power when mixed into the hydroxide of the crystal lye.
Thanks man. Expansion tanks for my car aren’t made anymore and cost 150 bucks so this is handy. 👍🏻
For some cars they really arent made anymore, ofcourse if you have a car that as 10 or 15 years it´s cheaper and easier to buy a new one.
After having done all this, I wouldn't put this back into the car...I'd rather leave it on my desk just to show others how insane I could become
could he says
C
Did it actually work.
LOL 😂
You deserve a medal
How does he make the H3NSO3 Activator shown at 0:48 in the video? Or you can buy the H3NSO3 Activator?
Love this dude no background stupid music and he show you the solution directly.
Thank you for the best video useful on you tube ever
Looks like the cleaning process also turned the brass nipple inserts silver and raised the molded tank lettering, too. Impressive! /s
You saw that toooo.
You are right. The metal sleeved into the plastic (water and gas tight under pressure) has miraculously got ‘clean’.
LOL right. Like the engine building channel where they start with a junkyard engine, but after the teardown they realize nothing is salvageable so they replace everything with new and factory reconditioned parts. I think they used the valve cover, everything else was new.
I was looking at that too. Was surprised no one mentioned it in the comments until I read your comment. Good Observation
Yup.. 100% faked one.., it's just a new reservoir
Thats insane. Woulda never believed that was possible.
Bet you had the cleanest GoPro around when you were finished the video :D
Super informative though, thanks for sharing!
Was this done for looks or improve the long-term strength/integrity?
soaking anything with a rust stain in vinegar works pretty good too
What ratio do you mix the solutions and which rust remover do you recommend?
@@raymondrace4837 just use hydrochloric acid - it's cheap and works better than many rust removers! good rust removers contain hydrochloric acid and/or phosphoric acid, that's all the magic behind them;) for removing rust and soaking bigger plastic parts just buy the cheap acid and save money!
Thank you.
Good tutorial, I did the same and just bought a new one.
lololol
Me too..😂😂😂
😂😂I thought I was deaf. Trying so hard to hear him explain what kind the chemicals he used to clean with.
Nice one dude
Hahaha that made my day, can't believe how many people in the comments think this is real
Good and beautiful work, many thanks for this tremendous effort, but I have a puzzling question: Why did you close the small outlets with tape even though the tank was inside the acid, and you left, for example, the sensitive electrical outlet without a cover? The evidence is that all the outlets are black and did not get rid of the dirt because you sealed them tightly with tape.
Awesome, where do you dump or dispose the chemical once you’re done with it?
So you make a video and go to the trouble of editing and fast forwarding, work with acids , etc. You even put a go pro in your dishwasher. But you can't do a little audio to tell us what's going on ?
😭😭😭😂😂 so true
Yeah useless video
So fuckin true. 👍
Cant read bud? UA-cam has made people lazy

can i do this on my gas tank as well? is it safe on gas tank plastics and wont make it brittle? Thanks for your input!
Sir how much quantity powder needed in 1 basket water?
Nice, I’m impressed. Thanks. Mike.
That will work, providing the plastic isn't degraded and brittle from years of heat in the engine compartment. I've seen some tanks that just fall apart.
Yeah, in my bmw from 1995 plastic crack by pressure and blow all fluid on the road. I also had that problem in 2005 Ford
Ha!!! Even the new cars nowadays those tanks are crap and crack for nothing!!!
Ok, I am a little slow. Can you separate the first and second washing? The first looked like Dawn or similar. Was the second (soaking) the Sulphamic mixture or the Sonax, which I have never heard of.
*Great job !!*
*Thanks for sharing.*
Does the acid eat the alumnus pipes?
Ive always wondered how to get these yellowing tanks back clear again. This is awesome.. definitely subscribing!
you buy a new one and then make a click bait video pretending you can make one like new
You should unsubscribe. Look at the tubing at 0:04 (bare brass colored tubing) vs. 0:07 (plastic covering the tubing). How does cleaning instantly have plastic covering on the tubing? This means it's a different coolant reservoir.
@@LittleMopeHead it looks it's brass outside, but it is silver with yellow plastic transparency. Cou can see the dark patches on narrow tubing through the entire process, except the part when he pours dirty water, holding (and hiding) the most recognizable tubing
I am genuinly impressed
nice video and great job,i prefer to restore it like you did in the video than replace it,original part is original part and nothing can be better than the original ;)
The problem with these is not the color of aging it is actually they become cracky and fragile. The plastic loses it's strength due to heat and cold cycles and chemical reactions that occur. Better buy a new one for 10 or 20 bucks.
Couldn’t of said it better myself. Why restore one of these tanks when it’s already compromised and can leave you stranded. This was only satisfying to see how clear he got it
That's a good answer when you CAN buy one. Not a good answer for my 40 year old VW, for instance. He's demonstrating the process.
somebody else There’s guaranteed a new tank available for your VW. Rabbit?
that acid also looks expensive to me
else i'else I'm sure there is a new tank available for your vw. And it's cheaper than the acid used in the video
Dude, you are probably the only one to video record inside a dishwasher. Every dishwasher should come with a camera.
:))))))))))
Great job, need to tdo this for my power steering reservoir.
What is your ratio of the soaking mix to take out the yellow? Is it just the sulfuric acid and water?
Apparently nobody knows.
What brand of acid? And how did you dilute it? I need to do my reservoir this weekend.
Sulfamik asit H3nso3 yani zayıf sulfürik asittir
Sulfamic acid, also known as amidosulfonic acid, amidosulfuric acid, aminosulfonic acid, sulphamic acid and sulfamidic acid
Have not used Sulfamic Acid before, worth a look.
What are you using to clean the coolant tank?
What's the mix ratio? How many parts acid to water?
Good video, thank you. Sometimes when restoring old cars this might be your only option as parts are discontinued.
The original pressurized coolant reservoir on my 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo had visible cracks but they weren’t all the way through the plastic so it was still holding pressure. Definitely a ticking time bomb though. I needed to figure out a replacement. As far as I could tell these were no longer available. Luckily A1 VW Rabbits use the same shape with the only difference that one of the hose connections is a different size. I used a hose adapter and everything’s worked great.
I need to do this for my 944!
Great thinking & adaptation! 😆

when i look up sulfamic acid, it comes in powder form. is there sulfamic acid in liquid form? or how do you turn it into liquid form like the one in your video? TIA
Awesome Video, thanks for taking the time to make it. That's quite a useful trick to know.
The acid is more expensive than buying a new part.... see that's useful information
Cool! Though getting acid around my place +effort needed to do this would cost more than just getting new tank from parts store.
Price a new one for a BMW E28.
Not if it's for a classic vehicle and they no longer make them.
It works guys, I’ve just used the bar keepers friend, let it sit overnight, and put a cloth inside and shook for around 2 mins, and came out looking pretty much like new!!
Bar keepers friend, eh? Think I'll try that and then put the new coolant reservoir in that has been sitting in my garage for 3 years
What materials you used for cleaning is possible
@@muhamedalaubaidy6988 I just used the bar keepers friend, left it to soak in that for 24 hours and then used a cloth inside a shook for 2 mins
@karl bolton, so to recap... you put some barkeepers friend in the reservoir, but can you share what ratio of powder / water you added and how full did you fill it? to the top? And when you say you stuck a cloth inside it afterwards, did you empty any of the mixture first after the 24hrs then put in a cloth to shake it? I'd really like to duplicate exactly what you did so I get it right. Thank you!
Nice video thanks for sharing.
I just used this stuff called ZEP from Home Depot $3.69 a bottle it came out almost as clear as yours.
hello say it is liquid acid h3nso3 that you bought or did you put a percentage of water? because I would like to do the same thing, if you can help me that would be cool of you. Cordially
Great vid, which acid did you use when you put it in the tank though?Or what was that you used?
i have the same question
A very nicely done project you have there. It could even make a difference between a 2nd to 1st place in a car show, what was the additive to initiate the cleaning / reaction? Ty I wish I knew this year’s ago when I owned my Audi coupé but then you have the experience to extract the rust and useless sediment of the old antifreeze etc. Again thank you for sharing this with us! You're so right. I'm trying this soon on my '94 Buick Regal's coolant reservoir (it has that greenish mold-like look inside). MANY THANKS LM!
?You written here Sulfamic acid Activator
؟Please give an explanation what is it
Very nice, looks like new again. Is H3NSO3 safe if accidentally spilled to painted parts, such as car body?
What is the activator described in the beginning? Is it the same concentration acid used to soak later?
Also, is there another way to rinse besides using a dishwasher? Would dunking it in a pot of boiling water be good enough? What does the dishwasher salt do? Is it an acid neutralizer?
@E Double what were the 2 part numbers you read on the "different " tanks? I looked again carefully and could not read the numbers to verify.
Show me the part numbers you say have changed.
@E Double You can't because you don't see 2 different part numbers. You just believe they're different parts without concrete proof.
In spite of some of the comments left I found it useful to know more especially if you cannot obtain a new tank. I don't spose my Lada Niva will mind if I leave it how it is though.
Thanks for your efforts.
