  • The Canon Rebel XT aka. Canon 3500D is an 8 megapixel dslr camera released in 2005.
    In this video, we wake this vintage digital camera out of its slumber and take it out on a photo walk to see how it holds up.
    And what it's like to shoot with an almost 20 year old camera today.
    The samples shown in this video were mainly shot with the kit lens that came with the camera in 2005. a few samples was shot with the same era 50mm f1.8 mkII and an even older Pentax 35mm f2.8

    My grandpa died in 2017, he had this camera. My mom borrowed it around 7 months before he died. My mom eventually lost interest photography and put it somewhere in a closet. 8 years later I found the camera, it still had old photos on it. Photos of my family, my divorced parents still togheter and much more. I just started shooting photos on it, it's not great but I am really happy with my first camera.

    The fact that the auto focus isn't that great and the overall technology is pretty much outdated encourages you to go fully manual and take your time with every photo. Which in addition of it's sensor and the mirror's sound, it really makes it feel like a film camera
    I've only had this camera for like 3 weeks now and I absolutely love it
    However, either the usb port or the usb cable of the camera is broken and my PC won't read it's memory, I'll have to get some CF to USB adapter to be sure

    it's my first camera as well, and i bought it in a second-hand store several years ago, way back when i studied overseas
    i do enjoy taking photos with it before i notice there were tiny spots that ruin my photos, i then go to the smartphone photos
    recently, I've joined a photographer class, and they told me what we use in the class is something entry-level (a nikon d3200 if i was correct), however it is still way advanced then the eos 350d
    i put my 350d somewhere and was giving up finding it, but it was found and i still loves it despite of all of its flaws: tiny taints, old version, low pixels
    till i read some of your comments, i think it was all about our relationships, our memories and precious emotions

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  21 день тому +1

      Good luck with the photography class, sounds like fun.
      Also, regarding the spots, it could be either dust or just some dirt on the sensor which is easy to get rid of. Dust can usually be removed with a rocket blower. If that doesn't help, you can pick up a cheap sensor cleaning kit on amazon and give that a go. There's plenty of videos on youtube that will take you through the process. But it's quite simple and straight forward.

    I think I accidentally said seven years in the video. Between the Rebel XT/350D and the first Canon DSLR that could shoot video.
    Not sure where I got that number from. But it's a little sooner than 7 years.

    My 350D has been my street camera for the last few years. After I’d used it to transition from film it went into the back of the cupboard. During Covid I did a review of my kit. Lots of surplus stuff sold but I couldn’t let go of the 350D. It’s quite petite with, say, a 28mm prime. Way better than using a phone. The LCD screen gives enough information so, if you want to kick the habit of checking each shot, just tape over the image screen.

    My dad gave me his 350D back in 2014 which made me get into photography. I had a kit lens and nifty fifty. It took me a while for me to learn the basics until I bought my first camera, the Sony a7s. When i got my mirrorless camera i found it easier to understand aperture, shutter etc. Even until today I still use my 350D paired with Canon EF 35mm f2. I have two of these. Both were bought off Ebay just to get a certain lens, tripod, etc. for use on newer Rebel cameras. Neat old things and simple. Only reason I don't keep them charged for use is those old data cards. The ones I got are so low capacity and buying a bigger one new or even used, is more than the camera is worth. I have six or seven old DSLRs that use those, but only a few data cards, so they collect dust now a days.

    I've been wanting to get into photography, for the past year I've been using my phone but now I've tried looking for my parents old 350D which I managed to find! So I got a question for you since you sound like you were in a bit of the same situation with finding and using it again the first time in 10 years or so, how long did it take you for the battery to charge? I've currently let it charge for 3 hours and the camera isn't turning on after these 3 hours. Is what I'm experiencing normal or do you think there's an issue with the battery or is it my patience there is something wrong with? :)

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  2 місяці тому

      First of, that's awesome! This is such a fun camera to shoot with.
      About the battery/charger. It sounds like the battery might be dead. It could also be the charger. After three hours it should be at least 60-70% charged if not 100%
      Good news is that new batteries and chargers are quite easy to come across and they won't cost you much. I can't remember the exact battery type, but Google the camera model + battery and you should find the info needed to buy a replacement/third-party battery.

    Been an advocate for all these forgotten cameras. For certain work and of course pleasure these cameras can be great for sharing online. I have had many people asking me what camera took that picture, when they find out, they don't believe it. Using cameras with CCD sensors make colours pop. The lowest mp I go is around 5. 5 up to 16 is a great range and there are so many cameras out there. Whether it is a DSLR or a point and shoot they force you to slow down and maybe struggle a bit, but the reward is great! Thanks for sharing!

      @ThomasFransson  3 місяці тому +1

      Macro is a lot of fun!
      Personally I enjoy putting my phone away and focus on taking pictures with a camera.
      Then again, if you have a smartphone with a decent camera. Buying a macro lens for it is a convenient way to get started. Especially with the bells and whistles smartphones have that regular cameras are missing. If you're unfamiliar with photography this might be the easiest way to start.
      Macro with a camera will like you said require a macro lens or at least close focus screw on filters. A tripod is another neat gadget to have along with a remote trigger to prevent camera shakes from creating un-sharp images.
      I hope this will help you on your way

      Hmm, you can tether it to a computer. And from what I can recall, the camera has a trs-style RCA output... Maybe you can make it work with a cheap RCA to Hdmi converter. They're about $10-15 and hook it up to your TVs Hdmi before you spend money on a monitor. If it works, just super glue or velcro thst converter to the back of the monitor.
      Worst case, if you start with the TV - you've lost $10-15 if it doesn't work.
      Don't forget to get the right cable from the camera if you don't have the original one left.

    We live in a golden era of cheap photography!!
    At least for hobbyists
    After try some mirrorless (Sony APSC, Canon M, Nikon Z50 that i still have), I was not able to choose a mirrorless system 100%. So I decided to wait for the market to settle a pair of years and buy old DSLRs, from Canon and Nikon. The overall experience is different and the picture rendition is different too. I buy the cheapest possible ones, preferably small and that use SD, SDHC or SDXC, no CF for now. I have the Nikon D60 with Yongnuo 85 1.8 and 40 2.8; a Canon Rebel XS and a Canon 77D, with 50 1.8 stm and 28-135 with some fungus that i need to clean. In both the AF is surprisingly fast, i stop down the lenses a bit to have enough room for non critical focus. Everything works, except for the missing eyecups, worn out rubber, etc.
    For me has been a relief to go for the old camera route, simple, cheap, funny.
    And i even can use my old manual lenses with focus confirmation!!!

      @@KNAPPAID because the first batch of mirrorless have slow AF, less frame rate shooting and worst ergonomics than DSLRs in the same price. If you Google "shutter count" you'll find a couple of pages that can tell you the count by uploading an image and the site goes through the meta data to tell you the shutter count.

      Thnx, yesterday I wanted to take some pictures, but its says error 99 on the display . I think the camera is broken😢

      It could be, or maybe it’s just something causing the issue like a bad memory card, electronic connection on the lens attached or connection between the lens and camera body that needs some cleaning. Or maybe a fawlty battery.
      Try removing all external components and add them one by one to see if this can help you locate the issue.

    I just bought this camera second hand. It just doesn't have a battery or storage card. I would like to order them but have no idea which one to get. Can anyone help me?

    • @ThomasFransson
      @ThomasFransson  25 днів тому

      I found both on ebay. About $12-15 for a third party battery (NB-2LH) including a charger. And about the same or a bit more for the compact flash card.
      But the batteries are also available on amazon and a number of other online stores. Just google the camera model + replacement battery and you'll find plenty of options to compare. Compact flash would probably be easiest to find (used) on ebay or locally in a second hand store as they haven't been produced in quite a while.

      Probably between $40-60 on ebay. I think I said around $50 in the video. But it will depend on the condition and location. New I can't remember. I bought it new and maybe paid $650 2005

    lovely video! im working on a rehousing for the 350d, some of these camera's produce amazing camera's but have a body that is "out of date" i want to make a retromod for it that has a waist level viewfinder. its my goal to make a camera that doesnt have many distractions like buttons screens etc.

      @@ThomasFransson thanks for being interested! I stopped the project for now, it was a good idea but maybe a bit above my level. I managed to finish some parts but it's far from done. I actually started working on a new project: a digital back for a yashica electro 35, it's a bit easier and I wanted a digital rangefinder for ages. I think that I can get it out of the "concept" fase into a real camera! Let's see what 2024 has to offer.

      Yes, I would probably not shoot at more than ISO 400 with these cameras to avoid noise. Maybe iso 800 depending on the scene.

    Well my 350D"s" is going dead but... still alive. These days positive film is more expensive than my camera(In korea kodak E100 is 25$ and used 350d price is 15-20$) LOL

      Haha, tell me about it, I just dropped of 4 rolls for development. These old cameras might not be able to scratch the exact same itch. But the can offer something special in their own way.
