    Before the 'Rebel In The Pool' outrage boils over, remember that you can fake things in video. The camera that went in the water was a second, non-functioning Rebel brought into the store during the same promotion. It had a broken lens on it as well. The Rebel we reviewed is still functioning, we might use it as a time-lapse camera.

      +TheCameraStoreTV People watch James Bond's movies where each movie they destroy millions of dollars worth of cars and they find it awesome, but when you throw an old camera, they get mad. Imagine if you actually said: yep guys, that wasn't fake, the camera I threw on the pool was the working one. Wow, people are weird.
      Awesome video, as always.

    Too many people get caught up in specs instead of working on their actual photography. Here's a hint: no amount of tech is going to fix your poor compositions and subject matter.

    My dad hoards his camera gear, so when I went to him in high school looking for a camera I could learn with, the Digital Rebel was what he pulled out. With that camera, the 18-55mm, and an adapted Takumar 55mm f1.8, off I went. I totally understand this nostalgia thing. Despite its clunkiness and its slowness I owe that camera a lot. Loved this video, very close to home for me.

    In 2003 some people were still buying film SLR cameras. Film wasn't dead yet. The digital photography had started since early 90's but for a reasonable cost film quality was better in 2003 but by far less convenient than digital sensors.

    I bought my 300 D on the goodwill auction site back in 2010, it had 200,000 on the shutter. I learned to shoot back yard birds and then wildlife for four years, while I accumulated knowledge and equipment. The 300 D was built like a tank and you did have the option of HDR to push the dynamic range. My 300 D became my backup back in 2014 and died this Winter with over 300,000 shutter count. It's a great camera to learn on.

    I still miss my first DSLR, the Pentax K10D. Had to sell it to afford the K-x, which was a great camera, but it was sad to ship the K10D away. It had 10 megapixels, and it was enough. When I got the K-5 I got 16 which was quite a bit more, and I had than when I left Pentax for Fujifilm with the X-T1 and got 16 there as well. Then I went for the Samsung NX1 which has 28. And that wasn't the reason I went for the NX1, it was the great image quality for video and the slow motion. But seeing that my old lenses still were sharp at 28 megapixels (even my Pentax K 135mm f/2.5) made me really appreciate the ability to crop in a lot if needed. But I still want my K10D back as well.

  • @KurtClark
    @KurtClark 9 років тому +3

    I appreciate this video! Thank you! Why do I appreciate it? Because I own TWO original Digital Rebels - both purchased used, and each for less than $70. I love them for what they can do, and accept them for what they can't do. One body sits in my camera bag as a last ditch backup.
    My experience with them is somewhat different from what you described; The pictures I saw in this video appeared to be taken through kit lenses, because I had the same experience with mine. Kit lens shots from my Digital Rebels look like mud, and didn't edit well in Lightroom - even when shot in RAW. But it's interesting to note that prime lenses can produce exceptional shots from this 6.3mp sensor which, by the way, is the same one as the Canon 10D at the time. In fact, a popular hack on these is to update the firmware to the 10D; the firmware adds ISO 3200 capability, and all sorts of custom features that can expand the device's capabilities. JPG on these cameras at ISO 3200 is virtually unusable in my opinion (or best presented when converted to Black & White), but when shot in RAW they are workable. Both of my Digital Rebels have worked flawlessly after the 10D firmware update. Now I do agree that the playback on the Digital Rebel is painfully slow. I freak the cameras out sometimes when shooting in RAW faster than it can process. I finally burned out one of my DSLR bodies last week (Oh darn...I used up a $70 camera! :) ) I get it, that the technology is not the same as my new DSLRs.
    Even with 2003 technology, they work today and they are sturdy.
    Consider that the Digital Rebel can function as an EXCELLENT training camera for a kid. It gives them the form and function of a DSLR without the added expense of a higher-end device - or the cost of film. They are also nice to take along when the surroundings would put your more-expensive gear at risk. I discovered that the Digital Rebel shines in one particular world: RAW, ISO 100, Manual setting, 1/125, f10, EF-S equivalent 10-24mm lens, and External flash. The colors and the clarity I get from this flash setup are excellent, considering the camera cost $70. Much of my photography occurs in poorly lit bars and concert venues. With the Digital Rebel I can get a great flash shot without having to deal with a 20mb photo file (RAW files are about 6mb) I find they are super handy when simply capturing the subject is more important than the size of the image. Besides, a 3072 pixel image (especially shot in RAW) can still produce a nice print - easily 5x7 or 8x10.
    While I don't agree with some of your descriptions related to image quality, I will say that everything else was dead on. There are TONS of these still for sale on eBay and Goodwill; in my opinion, they are a better investment than a comparable point & shoot. It's pretty hard to go wrong for 70 bucks :)
    Thanks again!

    I find these types of reviews very fascinating. Starting out with a mirror less camera, I take photos the way the camera (a6000) likes to take photos. Meaning I use Eye af, afc lock tracking, and manual focusing with focus peaking and magnification exclusively! I'm interested now to see if new inavation change the way I take and compose photographs now.

    Interesting video. Thanks a million. The only issue I take is that the exposures you showcased with the Canon 300D, looked way too soft or seriously out of focus. I do have this camera with the same lens you used and my photos came out razor sharp.
    So I do not know if your presets were properly preset, but the Canon 300D is legendary in generating wonderful photographs.

    I like these videos: looking back at where we've come from. It puts perspective on things we take for granted and gripe about today.
    For example I still have my first digital camera, the Sony DSC-P10, a mini brick of a PnS from 2004. It has a grand total of 5MP, a 1-inch rear screen, an OVF (parallax galore), max. ISO of 400, an f/2.8 - f/5.2 lens with 3x zoom, and it uses Sony's proprietary Memory Stick. It felt like the bees knees coming from film to digital.
    We've come a long way since then: EVFs, WiFi, bigger sensors, hybrid AF, 60fps, 4K, etc etc. Yet at the same time things haven't changed that much. Existing features like megapixels have increased, rear screens have gotten bigger, frames-per-second have gotten faster, ISOs have gotten higher, devices have gotten smaller and so on, but the core the device - that core experience - is still there.

There is a saying that a good photographer can take a good photo with either a good or bad camera. I will say that this is the best head to head comparison I've seen on a camera so far. I feel that on the Canon website, there is not enough definitive information to distinguish camera differences despite the compare feature. The similarities are usually 90-95% the same and you're looking for a reason to get one model or the other. The one take home here is that we don't need to worry about incremental increases in MPs as this is not really a factor in 2016 and beyond. Thanks for this.

    this is one of ur best videos till now ...it shows how cameras do a great job even after many years .Ya a sports photographer will need a better camera ....but in my opinion the best camera is the one you feel most comfortable with and enjoy using ....I damn love my d3200 ..heck I wish it had a tilty flippy screen but that ain't important .image quality is freaking amazing and comparable to some of the best cameras out there

    Absolutely true about ISO performance and dynamic range improvements in the newer digital cameras. I've still got a 450D (Xsi) and the 12MP resolution is OK, but the D800E I replaced it with really makes the Xsi show its age. Many good pics with the Xsi but much better ones with the D800E. Throwing the 300D in the pool is a good demonstration of the fact that the old technology makes a better paper weight than a flotation device so the 300D is still good for something. :)

    i still have canon 300d, also have newer version 600d which i use now, but even now and then i still use 300D for nostalgia and it takes nice photos, nothing wrong with old rebel. You can give a good photographer 300d and it will take much better photo then bad photographer with canon 5d, its the man behind the camera and not camera what really counts.

      I know the Feeling. My first DSLR was an 8 megapixel Canon Rebel XT. I own a more modern Canon SL1 (also called the 100D outside North America), but I still take out the Rebel XT for nostalgia. For the record the Rebel XT still works as good as the day it was purchased.

    Funny story, and a question or two. I actually use this camera to shoot! Yep, I know it's old, but it's the best I can get and use. I'm really wanting to get a Lumiz G7, but i don't have the money. Anyways, I was wondering how you set up the video features on this camera? I have been using it for about 6 months, and have found no info on video. Also, great video, it's good to know my crappy low light performance isn't my fault!

      This camera doesnt have video capabilities. Ive been using it for the last 7 years and still do today. They didnt start implementing video capabilities in the rebel series until i think the Xs(1000D) and the XSi(450D) so the rebel(300D), xt(350D), xti(400D) dont have video

    I've still got my 300d, although I must admit I don't use it any more. I do still use my 5d which is a ten year old camera and I get good results from it. So maybe the 300d was too early in the dSLR evolution to be relevant now, but the Canon 5d and the Nikon D700 are still amazing cameras.

    I started my DSLR phase with a Nikon D100, which was 6mp, and none of my clients EVER complained about any lack of sharpness. Now my main cameras of choice are Sony mirrorless, but I still use many of my old lenses, and still retain a couple of Canon bodies. It'll be interesting to compare advances over the LAST twelve years with what's going to happen over the NEXT twelve.

    A newcomer to digital photography, I bought a 300D body recently to make use of three old manual lenses I used with my SLR film camera. Used on AV, the results are very good, good enough for me anyway, especially if you subscribe to the view that it is not the camera that takes the photographs. I have seen what I am doing described as like using film photography with the facility to instantly review the images. Although it is only a six MP camera, because the largest size I print is A4, I have had some excellent prints as well. This has given me a very cheap introduction to digital photography.

    We had a saying in my photography group: "It's YOU, not the camera." Doesn't matter the age or value of the equipment. If it's a camera, you can practice with it. I had an old Canon Digital Rebel XT (350d) with kit lens lying around. I just gave it to my younger sister as her first DSLR. She is running around practicing with it now. It doesn't matter what she is using, but she is practicing technique. These old cameras can have a value beyond money. Tossing one in a pool is wasteful and ridiculous.

    5:50 Today, it's not really about larger prints anymore. It's about hi-res screens. I still have a 6 MP EOS 10D, a 10 MP EOS 40D, and a 16 MP E-PL5. And on my 27" 2560x1440 screen, I need the 16 MP to get really sharp images. The 10MP 40D already shows a slight softness, let alone the 10D. For large prints, the 10D is still good enough though.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  9 років тому

      +ArumesYT 2560X1440 is still a 3.5 MP display. Prints are a much more demanding format, if viewed at the same distance.
      Jordan @ TCSTV

    • @ArumesYT
      @ArumesYT 9 років тому

      +TheCameraStoreTV "if viewed from the same distance", exactly. And that's not what's happening now. While viewing distances for prints remain the same, the screens we use for both computers and TV's get larger and larger without changing the viewing distance. And yes, 2560x1440 is only 3.5MP, but since a Bayer-pattern only has 25% red and 25% blue pixels, you need 3,5x4 (14MP) to get full detail for every pixel.

She is having a great time....even the uploading to the PC takes ages but she likes the expectations of her work. I brought a few 300D's for $30-100 with 2 or 3 lens, extra batteries etc. I give them to my grand children and they love using them (all of them less then 9yo). We take them canoeing, bushwalking, beach etc and I'm not worried. They use them freely and experiment with them. Even though they are old they use them carefully and respectfully getting great shots. Slowly they are learning more and more about the cameras and photography. Like all cameras there is a place and use in the world for them and it ain't the bottom of a pool.
