  • Today's episode covers it all! I am venturing out on an absolutely frigid morning to Pass-a-Grille, Florida. The conditions are rough... the cold air, and the winds are biting - a strong cold front, and super high tide washed in thousands upon thousands of shells onto the beach the night before. We are going to shell, explore, and even learn a little(with the scientific assistance from one of my friends!)
    This is a cool episode that you don't want to miss!

      Hi friend, the weather was rough(mostly because I came to FL thinking I'd have warm temps, lol!) Most of the FL vids from this trip in December feature me in a warm coat 🤣
      I have never seen so many molluscs beached/stranded in this way before...it was surreal to witness.
      Thanks for watching!

It was bitterly cold but I weathered it too! I found a shell I’ve never found before and I’ve been all over Florida like you. It was the Florida Rock Snail Shell. I found 3 different sizes, simply beautiful. Congrats agin! Great video!! I’m still shaking my head. Thankful this video came across. Happy Shelling Friend! 💃🐚🌴🐬🥰

    Yeah, I was out there on that cold weather too! But not at P-G. Have been there since. It's the place to go for banded tulips, spiny jewelboxes and calico scallops. Also little horse conchs. That was a nice LW! You must have been walking down the beach. I don't see the rocks at the end. AND you do have to get there early because it's open 24 hrs. Ok. Now I see rocks. The end is usually the best place. Really hard not to take all those banded tulips, isn't it? I came home with a boatload last time I was there.😊 And I actually found a yellow one almost identical to yours at 23 min. Yes winter shelling after cold fronts are the best. We've had wind and rip currents the past couple of days so looking forward to that tomorrow!👍

      Oh yes for sure, I did a circle in the dark and then back again in the light - mostly at dog beach, and the beach to the left of the jetty. It was also a super low tide, so there was quite a bit of beach exposed by sunrise.
      I have been seeing that there is another similar wash up this week because of a storm front. Hopefully the temps haven't dropped too low, and the molluscs can survive it!

    I visited San /Cap this time 2 yrs ago and learned that the reason I only saw basically cockles and tulips is because it’s high season for cockles and tulips prefer to feed in cockles by attaching to their shell and drilling a small hole in them and eating the animal in the cockle. We normally are there summer or early fall so this was the first trip so early in the year and the whole beach was cockles. They would chatter and even move “walk” all around in the tide pools

    Wow, I've never seen such beautiful lightning whelks--they bright yellows and oranges? And of course the beautiful, perfect tulips. Very sad about the massive amount of cold shocked and stranded shells, tho. That part is hard to see. Nature is tough at times.

      @solaceinshelling6552  Рік тому +3

      Interestingly enough, I have found quite a few uniquely hued Lightning Whelks and Florida Fighting Conch's here at Pass a Grille - it could have something to do with the diet of these molluscs in this area. Nature can indeed be heartless sometimes, that's why I feel it's important to try to include some of the small educational components, for understanding.

      Awe !. That's so cute and sweet of you !🐚My mom got me into shelling when I was a kid. Being in Missouri, there was no beach. But one lady at church brought back tiny plastic boxes with a bit of fan and tiny bivalves in them. Well, she added them to a pinata .When I saw them, I wheeled and dealed to get several of them. Candy be danged !.

    Wow!! That was amazing!! I love to go shelling at night because it's easier for me to find sharks teeth. However, it's been way too cold for me this winter here in Florida!!! We're not built for the cold 🤣🤣

      May I ask why it's easier at night to find shark teeth ? Just curious. Not like I can leave MO. lol !

      Sharks teeth have a shine to them, so when the light from your headlamp or flashlight hit them you can see them easily.

      In my humble opinion, Pass a Grille is one of the best locations in central west Florida to collect shells. With that said, t's also a very popular spot, so it's best to try to arrive as early as possible, and try to plan for a low tide, if you are going to shell here. Good luck 🐚

    These images for me are very sad. Terrible loss of life from these beautiful sea Mollusks. Dang cold sea. But that's life for all of us. It's amazing that anything survives Mother Nature's Rath.

    What was the actual temperature? I didn't know that Florida ever got cold weather even in winter, isn't that why so many people retire there? Lovely shells you found though. Hi from Australia!

      Hi there, this was an exceptionally cold period of a few days after a weather snap. It normally does not get this cold in Florida, even in the winter. The morning temperature was about 35 degrees F with the wind.
      Thanks for watching!

    Wow....dedication right there! Felt for you being so cold....but loved the video. What portion of the beach do you go to? I've only been once and we had very little we luck, but we all have those days. Not sure which area of beach we should go back to. Thanks@

      This was primarily the Bay side(dog beach, I believe it's called), and the beach at low tide around the rock jetty! Try to time your visit around a low tide 🐚

      The size of my mesh bag helps me to limit what I collect from the beach. I have tons of cold weather gear, that I use in the Northeast when I shell in the winter, but I didn't prepare to see similar conditions while in Florida, lol!

    What would be the best thing to do if I find a beached live conch? If I place them in shallow water, will they just get beached again?

    • @solaceinshelling6552
      @solaceinshelling6552  5 місяців тому

      In a scenario like this where there are thousands of stranded molluscs, it would be impossible to move them all. Additionally, many of these stranded molluscs were already expired because of the cold.
      If you encounter a couple stranded molluscs, you can relocate them to shallow water nearby.
      Thanks for watching!
