    As someone who saw the original CG a long time ago and the new recap movies recently, I've noticed that unlike the main series, that had many light and humorous moments, Akito the Exiled was dark toned from beginning to finish. IMO, the producers should have made Lelouch the main or secondary antagonist because this OVA was a golden opportunity to show how dangerous he could be when he fights for the wrong side.

    • @ethicalapemen3686
      @ethicalapemen3686 9 місяців тому

      Problem is, compared to Lelouch, the wrong side are fools who don't know how to use his full potential. Now, if Schneizel were in charge of the EU operations and Lelouch, that'd be a different story.

    • @vocalgamer9222
      @vocalgamer9222 3 місяці тому

      Yeah, it definitely feels pretty dark in tone, that's for sure! Heck, one of my favorite scenes in Akito was the opening fight scene between the titular character and the Britannian Knightmares. From a music score perspective, you can easily tell how frantic and chaotic the score for that scene was, with Akito and his Knightmare fighting like an unholy communion of an unhinged madman and a cornered animal. Really goes to show our protagonist's mental state when he goes into a skirmish.

    Don't forget to mention that the director of this, Kazuki Akane, also directed "Vision of Escaflowne" one of the rare "fantasy mecha" shows. In Escaflowne there's alot of hand to hand sword fights that i think influenced this show heavily. Even some of the mecha designs seem to be inspired by fantasy mecha shows like "Panzer World" and "Dunbine"

    I have mixed feelings about this video. On the one hand, you're quite eloquent and make some good points about the presentation of the mecha spectacle angle. Congratulations for that accomplishment. On the other hand, I don't agree with your more negative or indifferent views about the story and the characters. They're not the most original in the world, but they do have more nuances (albeit definitely abbreviated in terms of screen time), that you didn't consider. I would be more generous and analytical towards the cast and especially the themes in that respect. A lot of people pay little or no attention to that, but for me they connect the pieces of the story. In any event, I do have to agree the original Code Geass TV series was more compelling to watch, but I also never found myself bored while looking at Akito the Exiled either. Which explains why for me the net result was positive overall, not just in terms of mecha, regardless of certain issues. Still, I can respect your opinion.

    Yes, it is. And I don't just mean the characters and awesome mechas, but also the level of screentime focused on the spin-off's figures as well as the way in which its story has been written, compared to the official Code Geass seasons I've seen.
    Although, I wish it were altered in a better way like this:
    1. The spin-off's title would be renamed Code Geass: Tales of the Europian Fronts.
    2. The commander of Europia's Wyvern Squad, Leila Malcal would be given the role of female main protagonist instead of deuteragonist of the spin-off.

    Good video, and I have to agree that more organic mecha are always a welcome change to the genre especially given their rarity. I think my problem with the designs in the OVA is that while they look organic, they look almost too outlandishly so, for lack of a better term. The movement is fluid and fun, and while realism isn't always a core component of the giant robot genre, to me it feels as if when they get to this level of fluidity/organic-ness it enters an almost uncanny valley area where we might as well just be watching people in ornate body armor fighting rather than actual robots. In a word, I think it lacks the weight that piloting a giant metal monster might truly have.
    I could be off base here, and I'm bias towards Gundam/Patlabor in this regard but I digress.

    I got about half way through the AtE and I couldn't agree with you more in terms of the story that leaves a lot to be desired. As someone who also has an affinity toward mecha anime I wanted to like it so much but where CG combat enhances the spectacle of the fights, it takes away from the weight and meaning of them, for whatever reason. I'll get back to it eventually though, definitely before R3 releases.
    P.S. Sooin, you've got some fantastic editing skills.

    A fantastic video you got there! I think I have to agree that this OVA series is best enjoyed when you simply watch it for the bombastic mech fights (especially later on). However, I think this is the only way to enjoy this sub-series, and even the mecha CG takes a while to hit its stride.
    I feel they only really mastered the kinetic movement of the mechas in the latter 3 films (3 and 4 specifically) as the first 2 and even final film often made it too difficult for me to keep up with the action of the CGI. I don't like the Alexander unit and I do feel it is a radical departure from the designs of every mecha in both the main and sub-series. The combat does remind me of the early days of Code Geass, when the robots sometimes fought like mechanized breakdancers with swords and guns. Everything about the CGI in the later films is phenomenal, even going to as fluid a frame rate as possible, and having the best metallic coating and painting I have ever seen. Shout-outs to movie 4 in particular with Ashley's new mech, and other visual splendors that make me wish the film was actually good outside of the production values.
    The CGI of the first 2 films (and the first half of film 3) also looked like awkward cel-shaded models with janky frame rates, but the second half of the OVA series fixed that tremendously. Starting with the fight between Suzaku and what's-her-face, the mechs have never looked better, as they now look like true, metallic war machines --emphasis on metallic--.
    The designs of the mechas themselves are far worse off to me here than in the original. Even with the Alexander, I'd have to say the design of the main antagonist's Knightmare Frame was butt fugly all around.
    But yeah, even with the designs that range from great to terrible, and the CGI that only really hits its stride in the latter half, it's a shame said good mecha CGI was wasted on this extra middle chapter. There's the half-geass introduced in the finale that outwardly contradicts how Geass works (it's more powerful, can inherently do a multitude of things instead of one like a normal Geass can, apparently children cannot possibly withstand a normal Geass even though Mao did, even despite how uncontrollable his power was). We have the fact that despite promising to show how the previously irrelevant EU that Rs 1 and 2 name-dropped got conquered (given that R2 blatantly said they did in between R1 and 2), they never actually got to that point --thereby failing at the one thing it set out to do from a narrative promise perspective--. As you noted, the characters are flat at best (and for me, intolerable at worst). The plotting of the OVAs is in bigger shambles all around than even R2 --and that's before we even get into the whole dimensional supervisor nonsense or random nonsense that jeopardizes the canonicity of R2). While you said it rides the like of calling the canon integrity of the series into question, I'd say it crosses that line multiple times during its latter half in particular. A midquel, sequel, or prequel, should never take a sledgehammer to what it's attached to in that regard. The final film in particular is just so much dogshit in every way that I don't even wanna discuss it anymore. Even the music fails to live up to either season in any way you can think of.
    Glad you had fun with the series however, as not only did the production values become damn impressive in movies 3 and 4 in particular, but it's always a pleasure to see more mecha action. I'm also glad you can truly appreciate the glorious memery of the main series as a whole, as while R2 fucked up royally at times despite being still fun as hell, R1 is currently my favorite TV series.

    • @bluespaceman7937
      @bluespaceman7937 6 років тому +1

      I would tend to disagree with your interpretation. The Geass fragment isn't shown to be more powerful than regular Geass. You're probably confusing its effects with those of the intervention by the higher power. Honestly, even on my first watch I realized those were two distinctly different things. The OVA staff never promised they would show us the entire invasion of the EU. That would be impossible, unless they either had more episodes or overlapped with the early R2 timeline. Which was not the point of the OVA. Nothing jeopardizes the canonicity of R2 either. They simply added a layer on top of what we already knew. I could discuss this in greater detail, but I know that won't change your opinion.

    • @CodeBlazeFate
      @CodeBlazeFate 6 років тому

      Admittedly most anime discussions I participate or witness in general amount to nothing, but I'm always up for defending my stance.
      The Geass fragment can do various things, rather than do one specific thing. On top of that, it does these things about as well as a normal geass can do one specific thing. Given that a geass is seemingly too powerful for a child to withstand (despite Mao being able to withstand, if not properly control the power, thanks to techniques on his end, and how nothing damaging to his mental or physical state beyond his obsession over what seemed to be the first person to ever care about him occurred, cal bullshit on that idea).
      This subseries certainly calls the canonicity of R2 into question and contradicts important things from both series. Even outside of the aforementioned, for one, Suzaku dramatically differs in characterization at points when compared to any point in the main series, particularly when he strangles Lelouch. Next is how no matter how you slice it, the explanation for how Lelouch got turned into Charles to lose his memories no longer lines up with how he reverted by the beginning of R1.
      Ultimately, this sub-series could have taken the chance to plug in some of R2's holes and questionable aspects in regards to the one-year time skip, but it didn't. It easily could have shown the EU being conquered given that the EU was the setting of the OVAs, and the final film easily could have played out so that despite the main antagonist being killed, the EU crumbles and the characters we accompanied over this journey get killed and/or captured. All they needed to do was establish that the Knights of the Round were being formed and that they were gonna make an assault on top of what the main villain had already planned. However, they wanted a safe, and badly executed and unearned happy ending, so instead the OVA feels like a waste, rather than a side-story that would help make better sense of the original, KH 358/2 Days style.

    personally I prefer mecha fights with more weight like asuka vs the eva series(I do not remember what the mechs she was going against were called). that fight did a good deal in demonstrating the forces that were involved in such a fight. the fights that are depicted in some of the scenes have shifts in momentum that are so drastic that they would have easily killed the pilots inside(being tightly secured does not help in such matters). there is also newtons 3rd law of motion that seems to be absent from the scenes we are shown(so is the second for that matter), I know that this is due to technical reasons but either way it is jarring. having a 100-200 ton mech that jumps off the side of a lamp post without bending it in the least... I cannot suspend my disbelief, seeing such a thing(this also applies to jumping off the side of a building).
    physics is why I fucking love knights of sidonia, though that show also gets some things wrong (i.e more mechs = more acceleration), the things it gets right puts it above and beyond most mech shows.

    So yeah, mecha anime in CG could look good. Then again, not many are really capable of pulling it off, hence why Sunrise is the king of Mecha in both 2D and 3D and it shows either through this, Gundam the Origin and, to an extent, Gundam Unicorn. Though I have to say that Akito the Exiled has the most bombastic CG mecha fights ever and if they go CG in Code Geass Season 3, I hope it will be bombastic.

      Kind of the point when CG mechs are only a third the size of Gundam's Mobile Suits. Being absurdly fast is a normal characteristic of Knightmare Frames in general, like how Lancelot in the first season literally dodged shrapnel shot by fucking railgun at it.

    True, it's pretty good, but if put next to the original Code Geass I still hate it because it totally fucks up my oh so precious continuity (Leave me be. I'm weird that way).
    That and its goodness stems from a much more superficial level than the original Code Geass.
    The fact that Code Geass was not primarily a show about mecha fights despite having awesome mecha was arguably the coolest thing about it. Not to mention that said mecha were surprisingly grounded and realistic (at least at first).
    So the fact that Akito almost completely abandoned that approach to the show was and still is a massive let down to me and I'll probably never be able to see it in another light than that of an inferior spin-off despite having the potential to be amazing if only it were given the chance to stand on its own feet. The C.C., Lelouch and Suzaku cameos really didn't help there as did the fact that they were basically trying to recreate the drama from the original show with characters that were very clearly not meant for this kind of plot.
    Also, unless it's Gundam Unicorn, I detest full CGI mecha. There, I said it! That was really not for me as were the Knightmare designs in general.
