So this week see's the frame getting the RRC treatment. The first job as always is to get the caked on mud and oil all washed off so that I can see what I'm dealing with. The dirt was pre-soaked with a caustic APC then agitated and left to work some more before pressure washing off at the most powerful setting.
After drying the frame off I then had to strip the remaining hardware from the bike and I'm sad to say none of it is salvageable so replacements will need to be sourced a little further down the line.
Once all the hardware was safely stored the main frame section could be coated with paint stripper. the plan was to get it sand blasted but sadly it doesn't fit in my cabinet and all of my local blasters wouldn't take it on this close to the holidays so I was stuck stripping the paint of the hard and messy way. luckily however the subframe just fits in my blasting cabinet so I could do that, and when it was all back to bare steel I'm very glad to say there were no horror stories to be found.
The only small repair needing done was on the sub-frame where the side plastics had worn a groove through the years and created a small pin hole. This was welded up and ground back again and the section was good as new.
After that it was simply a case of hitting it with some primer and paint. The colour is RAL2002 as this is a spot on match for this generation of orange/red Honda's not to be confused with the proper bright red ones of later years.
At this stage I thought it best to protect the inside of the frame too with a little clear cavity wax that stops rust in its tracks.
And that wraps up this episode.
So I hope you will enjoy the first episode of the series and ill see you all again very soon,
Enjoy
RRC

Honda CR250 Restoration - Part 2 - Frame Restoration
That frame looked so cool in bare metal I would have been tempted just to spray some clear on it. Great work as usual Sir. 👍
If I wasn't such a purist I would have, it looked stunning in bare steel.
@@RRCRestoration I'm guessing it's a cro-moly steel? Mild steel couldn't possibly look that good after 35 years, especially not where the paint had rubbed off already.
@@RRCRestoration You are a true restorer and preserver of the old and the classic. Not a customizer except when the mood suites. Such fun you have! I love this stuff.
I once seen a guy with a KX 500 with a chromed frame. Looked pretty amazing !
I do that with my bike builds . I build around a dozen " industrial style " bikes a year (among others). Right now my favorite clear for bare metal is Cerakote clear . It's formulated for bare metal.
For those who haven't used it, self etch primer is incredibly thin and it's only purpose is to provide an adhesion layer so paint will stick to the metal. There's no need to use a gun and it doesn't really have any build up or alter the prepared surface at all. As he said, it's much easier and cleaner to spray from a can and there's not really an added benefit to spraying from a gun like there would be for regular primer or paint.
Couldn't have said it better myself ;)
Good man spraying in the rust inhibitor. Arthur Tussik style...this will ensure the bike will safely endure another 30 years of enjoyment. Great job!
YES!! When there's a new video from Mr. RRC Restoration, you know it's gonna be a great day! Merry Christmas from the USA.
Thank you very much, and a Merry Christmas to you too :)
Certainly one of the top ten in my favorite list. I never miss one.
Looking at the factory welds with the frame in bare metal, I'm feeling pretty damn good about my new skills as a totally UA-cam trained MIG welder. I'm not going to be as self critical as before. It looks like Honda sure wasn't back in 1986. If I had done those frame welds, I'd have used a few new flap discs fixing them up. I realize this was after all, a dirt bike and more based on utility than looks. So as long as they penetrate and hold all is good. Still, I'd see them every time I looked at the bike had I done those. Your beautiful paint as usual, looks amazing!
True! Those weldings were pretty ugly 🤣👍🏼
A legend restoring a Legend. Live the videos man.
Thank you very much :)
Your editing and production is next level. well done!
Thank you so much, I try my best even though I am useless with Pc's haha
His video production is as good as the rest of his stuff. Amazing!
Frame is as good as new!, I love watching your work for the simple fact that your approach, workflow and attention to detail is at the same level as my own; ie only way to restore something is to do it right and full. Really looking forward to the next upload. By far the best restoration/mechanic channel on UA-cam!.
Truth.
Thank you so much for that kind comment, It means alot to me :)
Well, where are the videos? Break out the tripod and the Gopro and lets see some of your stuff! Come on now... Inspire us!
@@usethenoodle I don't restore anything or upload. What i meant was his attension to detail and mathodical workflow is pretty much my own mindset, it's exactly how i would be doing it, so it's a joy to watch. Hate seeing bad restorations where it's either half assed or ruined.
@@DJLKM1 got cha. Merry Christmas.
Nothing like starting from the bare frame and up. That way you know exactly how it was built, and of course painted. Thumbs Up!
Great work! And thank you for supporting the local Chinese Restaurant community so well (judging by the copious amounts of plastic ‘carry out’ containers 😊
Great job with the frame paint my friend. Awesome work
Thank you very much :)
Excellent camera work and editing. I think your production values get closer to hollywood with every new episode! 👍🇦🇺
Love this
I used to race these back in the day
Very quick and alot of fun
Thank you, love thee bikes too especially this era
What an absolute Craftsman you are there is not one job you can't do and one tool you do not have it is bordering on superhero ability. Even your cinematography and editing are outstanding
Nice to see the second stage of this restoration love your videos thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment :)
Stunning job on the frame, looking forward to the next episode 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Professional from A2Z. Probably the best hands on motorcycle restoration channel on youtube. I have an old Zündapp KS 50 Watercooled from the late 70s which I kept for a restoration purpose some time down the line which obviously never came (I was 16 when I bought it now I'm 56), just in case you need new material to film, this could be a win win situation to be discussed?
Hello sir,
Im a big fan of your video’s and i look always with enthousiasme and joy.
I like how you are working and neat.
Can you maybe do a video how you restore tools because i see that you have really nice tools to be precise your snap on Toolcar. 😉
It can do a restore video 😊
I look forward to see more video
Cheers from the Netherlands
great work, nice to see the progress and the care you take to get things right bravo
Quality frame and paint job
Love the vids giving some insight on to go about starting my restoration of my grandpa's 1970 Suzuki 250savage dirtbike
Great choice for a resto project! Love those 80's CR's. Looking forward to the 3rd episode. Cheers.
Another awesome paint job.... merry Christmas my friend
Thank you! Cheers! Merry Christmas :)
I can’t wait until the next video 😬
awesome paint job you know your stuff sir great work
I remember many years ago liberally applying waxoyl inside the windscreen surround of my very delapidated 2CV. All went well until the next hot sunny day after I had pumped in copious amounts of waxoyl which lost its viscosity and oozed out of the windscreen surround into oily puddles in the front foot wells, not that 2CVs have foot wells as such. Ho hum.
Thanks for uploading yet another high quality video, keep them coming.
I still keep waiting for the "please subscribe" notices whenever you open a tool drawer or similar, bring them back 😆.
Loving this series so far! I was intrigued to see how functional the welding was on the frame, no nice brazing or buffed weld. I suppose tho it’s an mx bike and at that level it’s function over form.
It’s funny when I first saw the bike I thought it looked good, but a closer inspection showed some horrors. The repainted frame looks mint so can’t wait for the next stages! All the best when it comes mate 👌
The return of the merch store’s no. 1 bestseller ‘Super Ultra Lethal’!
A nice Xmas present. Thank you and a merry Xmas to you
Thank you, Same to you and your family :)
So glad I've found your channel, I've been stuck in with covid over xmas, but this has me looking forward to starting my own projects in the new year. Cheers!
I love watching and listening to you work dude. Your competence, thoroughness and ability shine through, whatever the subject is. Merry Christmas to you and yours. 😎
Another fabulous job. I hate paint stripping, You must have the patience of a saint.
Thank you, Aww I hate it too especially when its cold :(
Crackin job..Nothing wrong with that pro XL etch in a can.ive just used it this week on my xr 600 frame..it covers really well..cheers
Can't wait to see the finished product. Beautiful workman ship
Love watching your work , it borders on the obsessive but the results speak for themselves. Incidentally do you have a supplier for the plastic trays you use or do you just like alot of takeaways lol
Thank you so much for your kind comment it does take a lot of hard work and a touch of OCD haha. yeah i buy them in bulk ;)
That Simoniz etch primer is brilliant stuff, I've used it a fair few times now, actually used it yesterday, and their gloss black, now sealing it with their clear coat on a replacement clip-on for my ZX9r.
Brilliant content yet again. I always love watching your videos!
Thanks again! :)
Beautiful my friend
Wow outstanding job sir.
Great job as usual. Nearly gave the game away with your reflection in the window around 4:26! Have a lovely Christmas.
Thanks for all your videos this year, enjoyed every one of them. Merry X and Happy N Y.
I do apologize for any remarks I made about you fixing an old toilet and using it
I was saying I love every project you do, I was saying to some people who
want just you to fix this and this, I like your channel the way it is ,
your ideas . Like I said i'am sorry.
That frame is looking mint once again, great job!
This might go against the spirit of the channel but would you consider a restomod project? For example, a bike like this but with modern engine, electrics and engineering but keeping it looking like an 80's dirt bike?
Generally with bikes like these the engine is the strong point but everything else is inferior. It’s much more common to put an old engine in a modern frame than the other way around.
I defo would do something like that if in the future I get something that's mechanically gone but has some cool retro charm left ;) But as Peter said its usually the engine that never goes wrong with these things lol
The engine and electrics are often the weak point with modern bikes, they are very complicated and engineered against a different set of constraints that did not exist in the 80s, better off keeping the old stuff, not as environmentally friendly, but powerful reliable and simple.
@@robertriesshozerlover4 the name is German for blood orange, so red-orange then!
As always RRC your Restoration is Awesome I can't wait to see the result great job hope to see more motorcycle Restoration soon Merry CHRISTmas
Awsome!
When will you make a full plating tutorial? It would be amazing!💯👍
Very nicely done! Another great episode from a fantastic series! Excellent work!

Thank you, Glad you are enjoying it so far :)
This restoration is going to look stunning!! Merry Christmas
Nice outro!
Excellent job well done there awesome to see the frame stripped like that 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Dear RRC. Can you put this request in your todo list for restorations. I’m a big fan of early 80s Japanese superbikes. Would love to see a resto of one of the following. 1. Early 80s Kawasaki GPZ..preferably a 550 or 1100. 2. Early 80s Honda CB900f or CB1100f. And lastly a first edition of Suzuki slab sided GSX-R 750...1985 model. That’s my wish list...here’s hoping you come across one of the aforementioned bikes in your travels. Fan from Canada.
I showed the last clip to my wife and she said that if she would ever leave me - it would be for a Scotsman. I thought about it and said: Me too, if I ever leave you it would be for a Scotsman as well.
Best accent on UA-cam for sure.
Haha love it, thanks for leaving that comment it made me smile :)
Hope you have an amazing Christmas, fantastic result with the frame it’s literally like it has just rolled off the factory floor.
Nice job already, I am looking forward to the next part.
Great work as always - thank you for sharing - wishing you a peaceful and joyous Christmas!
Great to see such amazing work !
Thank you! Cheers!
It would be great if you restored an old jawa or a simson, keep up the good work
El cuadro quedo perfecto!!! Excelente trabajo como siempre!! Y gracias por los subtitulos!! Feliz navidad!!!
Great video as always, terrible factory welds!!!
Perfectly executed paint restoration. Well done! Merry Christmas!
Thank you very much! Merry Christmas :)
Looking very nice.
Always waiting progress video
Merry Christmas.
Same to you :)
Never had one of these only a Maico 490 but these were excellent bikes, a real classic .
Nice, Maicos are very rare these days.
Would you consider doing a “voice over” style video answering subscribers questions?
Maybe put something on the community page where people can put their questions and you pick the ones that you think are worth answering. Obviously nothing personal.
Maybe your working background
Your first restoration
Your favourite restoration and why
Likes and dislikes
Channels you watch on UA-cam
Things you do when not making amazing videos.
You get the jist lol.
Anyway just an idea, Merry Christmas and I look forward to the next upload.
All the best.
All round spectacular job once again. I think you have more than earned a wee dram or two and a some time off for Christmas. 👍
Thank you very much glad you liked it :). The workshop will be all locked up tomorrow and I'll be enjoying a nice wee Lagavulin I think as a treat. Hope you and the family have a nice Christmas too :)
And yes a next great Part of this Update Love it very good Job 👍❤️👍
Another splendid video, Have a great holiday.
Thanks, you too :)
Loving the new outro. Would like to see some outakes also. Great work as always mr. RRC.
Thank you, I thought id try something a bit different, I might use the ending screen for extra info/outtakes from now on as I quite like the format.
Great Work. I thought the bare frame was in excellent shape given the abuse the machine has had to suffer over it's lifetime. It would have looked pretty amazing Nickle Plated. I have to say that the welders in Honda's Competition department did a better job than the ones who welded together my old CB175 back in 1972!🤣 The sub frame was not as well finished so I guess they gave that to the apprentices to finish.
Top work as usual.
Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Hogmanay. I hope you get to raise a glass or two and do some socially distanced "first footing"
Keep Safe
Can’t wait to see the final product!!
Same :)
Looks great, as usual. Merry Christmas to you and your family
Love your work 👍
Merry Christmas 🎄

Merry Christmas to you too :)
Merry xmas fella hope you have a good one
I have nothing better to do tonight than translate some foreign language comments. I was always expecting one to take the piss and seeing if anyone translated what they said...so far so good .....as you were.
Gran trabajo 👍
Very nice job as usual, great work 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 👍
Stellar work as usual!
Mind if I ask a question, to the laymen's eye a lot of the factory welds on the frame and subframe look really rough and untidy, is there a reason for that?
Was gonna say the same thing. The factory welds look terrible (unless they're old repairs done by previous owners maybe?)
"Super extra lethal" That's how you know it works! lol
Good work an unskippable ad at the start
10:45 make with some tape a 90° angle on top of the colorcan.
Spot on job👍
Frames is looking minty fresh and just a tip for your serch hashtags. Add #2stroke
Nice one, could've sworn I put that in... clearly not haha cheers.
Merry Christmas mate!! Wishing you and yours all the best for the New Year. I am still mending up but hopeful to get back to work early in the new year. Cheers
