Just watched your clip here in East Sussex UK. There was a local sunflower competition so thought I would order some seeds ! Great video X
I watched it in NE England. It was very informative, but I wonder, don't you have slugs and snails in New Jersey. If I planted direct from seed, the chances of many surviving are pretty slim.
Hello from Alberta 🇨🇦
New Orleans,Louisiana
@@alancarney4344 Hello Alan Carney how are you doing today?
I have grown sunflowers in Nigeria in my garden! They give me thrill watching them grow from seeds!
I agree with you . Sunflowers give me a thrill too as I see them grow 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🤗🤗🤗
Wow! Thank you for checking in all the way across the globe from Nigeria! 🌸😊🌻🤗🌍👏
Greetings from America!
They are so beautiful and remind me of my mama who passed away five years ago to breast cancer. They give me so much joy!
What challenges did you have in Nigeria? My garden in Capitola, CA is near a river and forest and squirrels got most of mine! 🌻🙄
One morning my neighbor just spread the seeds in front of my house. I wasn't a fan of sunflower, but I just let it grow. Turns out , it flowers beautifully. Everyone passing in front my house will stop for a minute to look at them. Now I want to grow more... #ThankYouNeighbor #Indonesia
Hi Fikri, thank you for the wonderful sunflower story. I’ll bet they looked amazing ! 🌻🌻🌻🌻😊😊
A young woman always gives me a plant, I wasn't a fan, but the third time she gave it to me I planted it with extra care ,now its blooming and am getting to like it
He was like johnny appleseed just spreading everywhere lol
Make sure you don't have any chickens watching you plant these. I got down to the end of the row; only to look up and see my pet chickens scratching up my seeds and eating them. Guess they thought Mama was hiding them there for them to find.
Hey Happy Honey 41, that’s so funny . 😃You must have been like wait whaaaa??? I love chickens , need to get some for the farm one day. Do you get a lot of eggs from them ? 🌸😊
They’ll do the same thing to glass gem corn as well, both are very nutritious so if you grow extra for them I’m sure they won’t mind.
HappyHoney41 That is so funny! What has started me on the sunflower path is throwing out what I assumed to be spent seeds from our birds and now have them growing up everywhere! Early days and I'll have to replant the seedlings so I hope they don't mind being moved. I'm in South Africa so we're just going into Summer.
Omg....
Oh how funny.
I inherited an old farmhouse from a family member. He used to grow flowers and peppers, so I decided I was gonna start growing sunflowers and sell them to the market! Just like he did to make him proud:) and to remember him :) thank you for your video I am trying to do this thing right:)
Hi Paige, that is such a beautiful story . What a wonderful way to remember your friend . You are very welcome for the sunflower tips . Let me know if i can help you in your sunflower growing adventure . Good luck 😀🌺

That's lovely 🌻❣️🌻
Its amazing.I hated sunflowers when I was a kid.they were weeds to me then.now I love them.they make me think I didnt have such a bad childhood after all. I love you, Dad and Mom
Such a sweet sentiment to your dad and mom. Thank you for sharing that 🌻🌻🌻👍
I rather sunflower versus thistle. I hate thistle/artichoke. I had a friend whose mother was in love with thistle. Let's just say I could never go to his house.
most underrated plant, easy to grow, resistant to disease and beautiful
I agree with you . Such an amazing flower . 🌻🌻🌻
The squirles ate all the heads off my sunflowers lol
Beautiful! Sunflowers are nice too.
Thank you for great tutorial .
I’m only 15 but I love Sunflowers. Imma try to grow some and I needed some tips. 🌻. Hopefully they survive in Arizona weather. ❤️
That sounds like an awesome idea! I'm going to grow some this year too. I hope the heat there doesn't cause you any trouble and you get some beautiful flowers :)
Yay! More kids growing too!
Make sure they get lots of water but once they’re established they are drought tolerant!! Good luck!

As an aspiring gardener in colorado im so happy you made this video. Thank you so much, the spacing information is so helpful!!!
Hi! I'm from Guam about to plant my first ever flowers from seeds - sunflowers! I've watched videos and I'm testing out incubating the seeds versus directly planting them into soil. So excited to see the difference and hopefully have my own flower garden started! (I only have non-flowering plants so far) Thank you for the video! 🌻
Hi Karina👋
I'm glad you liked the video! Thank you for checking in from Guam and wishing you all the best for your sunflowers and garden 🌻🌸 !!
I’m in Tennessee. I just harvested my very first sunflower. I have a 6x30 zinnia and cosmos bed. My novice self hung bird feeders nearby. They planted tons of black oil sunflowers. I just let them grow. I harvested it in the “cracking bud stage” so I’m excited to watch it unfurl. Thanks for the helpful video!
Great video! It feels like the sunflower growing tips are just a bonus for watching such a gorgeous lady hosting the tutorial 😊
Watching from Philippines 😊 Lately I started love sunflower so im planning to plant my own drawf sunflower , hopefully it will grow 😊😊
Thanks a lot Kelly. I love gardening. Your tips are so important. Thanks for that.

That's a nice bunch of sunflowers. Reminds me of the sunflower fields I saw motorcycling down through France last year. You have inspired me to fill my front garden ( Whitefield in Manchester UK) with them this summer.
Oh so happy to hear that . What a beautiful memory you have of the sunflower fields in France . Amazing . Glad you are planting them this year . You will love them . 🌸

Lol I just watched another video of yours about sunflower tips and I knew as soon as I heard your voice that you were a Jersey girl and it has now been confirmed! 🌻✨
Haaa yes it’s hard to hide a NJ accent. You also probably picked up my Long Island NY accent too. I was born and raised there and that’s a hard one not to hear too 😃🌸
Rewatched video. I love all the great tips. Sunflowers are my favorite flowers.
I love sunflowers too 🌻 I'm so glad you enjoyed the video 🌸😊
I was looking for a sunflower farm but there's none near my city in El Paso, TX. I have to drive days to get to one. I'm going to take these tips to plant my own sunflowers. Not a whole farm but at least a few of them😅. My grandmother would plant them in front of her house when I was a kid but I didn't get a chance to learn from her. I see her whenever I see sunflowers. Thank you so much. 🥰
Thanks for the tips kelly they really help!
Thanks Slushie. Love your UA-cam name 🌺😀

I’ve always wanted to plant sunflowers but didn’t even know where to start but now I do!! Thank you for the info and OMG your sunflowers are gorgeous
Thank you so much flower friend , so glad to hear the video was helpful ! Wishing you all the best with your sunflowers 🌻🌻🌻
Hi - what varieties are we looking at in this video?
Just realise how long i have been followed you. Watching Ahao grow up, Dawang be fatten up and your baking skill level up over years has been one of my great joys.
Planted the mammoth sunflowers. They are easy to take care of and very beautiful. I would watch the bees going from flower to head to head knowing that their work is not in vain. The grew 18 ft tall and had seed faces 18-23 inches wide. People walking by loved to look at them.
Thank you for this! I'm also in NJ. I have been planting sunflowers for years by just broadcasting them - just to add color to the property. This year I'm preparing to plant a larger area, so placing them intentionally in rows may be a better way to go. Hoping to share my results on YT also. Definitely will be following your lead!
So happy to hear you are already in the sunflower know . I’ll bet when you broadcast the seeds for the color pop it really does the trick . Rows are awesome too .
I planted Russian Mammoths in a row where the rain drops off the roof, making a little river. Cant wait!
I've just started growing my sunflowers and I hope they can turn out like yours! I live in Dubai so they are a good choice of flower since there is lots of sunshine. Thank you for the informative video!
Hi Harriet , oh that’s so exciting for me to think of sunflowers growing in Dubai. Amazing ! I’ll bet you can grow them year round too since temps are so warm. Thank you for sharing that 👏👏😊🌸
Thank you for checking in from Dubai🌍👋. Welcome to our Flower Tribe 😊🌸
Oh that’s cool! Since quarantine my mum had some spare seeds from her school so she got them and others for me to grow! Day 4 now and they are bigger than my finger already! I live in Dubai too
I just started a UA-cam channel from inspiration from both of you! It’s called Morti Organic and I’m making a series on sunflowers
Something about a pile of sunflowers that just makes you smile huh! So pretty. My chickens lose their minds when I give them a big ole head full of seeds to pick out. They especially love the fresh seeds over bagged seeds.
I LOVE Sunflowers!
Me too! So happy to hear that 😊😊🌻🌻🌻🌻
i’m planning a sunflower take over in my neighborhood to help our soil and bees. Finna start plant these at night in secrecy 😳
Ohh wow , sounds like your neighborhood will be bursting with sunflower joy soon. The bees will love it . I’ll bet the neighbors will too

Hi Kelly,
Just found your channel, as I was searching for tips on growing sunflower seeds, because, as we're on lockdown for our 5th week here in England, I'm going to plant some with my 3yr old grandson, whom I care for.
You take care Kelly, and keep safe at this worrying time....
Ian 🙏
Hey there Mr. R , Welcome to our Flower Tribe 🌺🙂! Such a fun activity to do with your grandson. I'm sure he will cherish the memories of growing sunflowers with his grandfather his entire life . Well done 👏🌻
Thank you for checking in from England 👋🌍☺
Thanks Kelly, I hope so, as I take being a grandfather an honour, and the best "job" I've ever had!👍
And thank you for welcoming me to your channel, and taking the time to reply🙏
We've just walked the dog along the deserted riverside, as the sun is going down over our little English Market Town (Stokesley, dating back to the Domesday Book, 1086AD)🏴🏰🏹🛡️
Looking forward to watching and learning more from your videos, thanks again. 😀👋
So nice hearing of your stroll in England . You are blessed to be so grateful for your grandfather roll . I’m looking forward to being a grandparent one day . I’ll bet it’s glorious. Thank you for your kind comments they made my day 🙏🌸
Ah, and thank you for your kind words too, Kelly. I always say, "It costs nothing to be nice", and even though its not always reciprocated, that doesn't matter. However, its lovely to see others who have that outlook too, like yourself🙏😉
And yes,. I'm sure you're going to absolutely love being a grandparent, and you'll be able to teach your grandchildren all about horticulture, and in doing so, are teaching them such valuable lessons AS, careing, nurturing, and probably the hardest for the little ones to master, PATIENTS! 🤣🤣🤣
"ARE THEY GROWN YET?...."
Ha ha🤦🏻♂️😂
I was a single dad who brought up 2 beautiful daughter, and am now truly blessed with 4 amazing little grandchildren 💕💕💕💕 whom I try to give any wisdom that I might have gained in life, to help them get through life a little easier🙏
Right, I'm so sorry for rabbiting on, it's the Lockdown-Syndrome kicking in! My messages are seeming to be getting longer to everyone, sorry! ☺️
I'll bid you farewell Kelly, and pray that you and your family stay safe at this testing time.

HAHAH I just watched some guy get so emotional and confused thinning his pumpkins (even though he grows pumpkins forever now) and this pretty girl being so straightforward and just thinning them easy peasy 😂😂 love itttttt thanks!
Her energy is so fresh and masculine but she’s still so girly and attractive. Ugh 🌸
Great video! Your sunflowers are breathtaking!
Thank you Val, I appreciate that 🌻🌻🤗🤗
I planted just about as many as she did here last year, and they were great. Had a hurricane come through in NC that knocked a lot of them down. This year. No lie. Squirrels have eaten every single one of the sprouts , not just digging for seed , which they have, but once sprouted they have been eating the tops of them, I only have two rows left, and this is my 4th attempt this summer.
I like that sunflower seed while watching movie
So happy you liked them . Such a happy flower to watch 🌻🌻🌻😊😊
Hi Kelly! What's the best type of soil for growing sunflower at home? Thank you so much! 🌻
Hi Julyssa, sunflowers grow in most kinds of soil as long as it is not super wet. They seem to prefer soils that are slightly acidic to somewhat alkaline (pH 6.0 to 7.5). Wishing you lots of sunflower blooms this year
Beautiful video nice explained tq
you’re the best, kelly. can’t wait to start planting mine :)
Thank you for your kind comment flower friend , wishing you the best with your sunflowers 🌻😊
Such great information, thank you! I was having fun noticing how the seeds were "little guys" and the blooming flowers were referred to as "she".... funny how we do that :)
Hi Kayla , so glad you got a smile from that . Thank you for your fun comment . 😀☺👏
Hi Kelly, great video! I’m in Rhode Island looking to plant my first patch of sunflowers trying to decide between single-stem and branching. I know so much depends on preference, but which of each type would you recommend? Looking for a tall and easy varieties. Thanks!
Hi Evan , I prefer the single head sunflowers since they are beat for my bouquets but the multi heads look terrific in the garden since they have so much color. I love them both 🌻🌻😊
Thank you for checking in from Rhode Island👋🌍😊

When you are thinning, can you transplant the ones you take out somewhere else?
Super Sunflower question Lianne. Yes you can . Try to dig down deep though so you capture most of the root and transplant immediately into welcoming soil in a sunny spot . Give the transplants a shot of water to get them settled in .

@@KellyLehman - if you plan to transplant, it’s best to thin & transplant in the evening so the plant isnt cooked by the sun. If possible, use old discarded plasric pots & cover too. Chance of success greatly increases.
What kind of soil do they need and why do my seedling start to die when I put on full sun? Love from the Caribbean
Hey There, Though they're not too fussy, sunflowers like slightly acidic to somewhat alkaline soil (pH 6.0 to 7.5). They are heavy feeders, so the soil should be nutrient-rich with organic matter or composted manure. You can also work in a slow release granular fertilizer 8 inches deep into your soil.
I have a feeling that the heat in your neck of the woods may be hindering growth.
Try planting them in an area that gets morning sun and then some afternoon shade .
Good luck . Let me know how they turn out this year . 😊🌸
Thank you for checking in fro the Caribbean 🌍👋😊 Welcome to our Flower Tribe 🌻🌻🌻😊
Hi. Greetings from Trinidad.I have clay soil where I live but I water my sunflowers regularly and I use epsom salts.😄
Beautiful sunflowers!!!
Thank you flower friend 🌻🌻🌻
🥰🌻My favorite flower!! Beautiful!! I can’t wait to try to plant them next spring!!
Wishing you beautiful blooms 🌻🌻🌻🌻
My son's teacher gave him some mammoth sunflower seeds, I planted 2 in a container not thinking they would grow, now they're both close to 4ft tall and I can see the heads developing😳... the container is too small, is it too late to transfer to the ground or a bigger container?
Super question. These gals are going to have long root systems so I would try to either transplant them to a super large pot or better yet into the ground in a sunny location . Try to get the entire soil around the plant transplanted too so the roots stay in tact . Make sure your home is large enough. Good luck 👍🍀
My brother is getting married in October, by my grandma's lake in a beautiful field. We want to have sunflowers in the field, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
How is it going?
Love you sunflower video! Very informative!
Thank you appreciate that 🌸🌻🌻
East TN and enjoying your sunflowers.
Thank you for checking in from Tennessee 🌸👍👋🌎🤗
Have you ever seen a snake right where you are, I will be so afraid to get in the field to film and get bit by a snake.
I have seen many snakes and find that they are much more terrified of me than I am of them so they skedaddle pretty fast .
Sunflowers are indeed beautiful, but they exude poisons from the shells of their seeds and other parts of the plant into your garden soil. Always clean up any debris from sunflowers, and do not use this in your garden. If you have a sunflower area, keep it a dedicated sunflower area, and do not plant them continually in different places in your garden
Hi Charles, thank you for sharing this sunflower information . Very interesting . 😊🌻
@@KellyLehman I was shocked when I learned of this recently. We had always encouraged sunflowers to go Rogue in the garden for bird food. I'm going to be more careful from now on. I'll just grow them in select areas every year, and dispose of the leftovers in a different spot, separate compost. I wonder what they do in sunflower fields? Maybe there is a way to offset this somehow? I guess I haven't seen a sunflower crop two years in a row in the same spot row come to think of it...
Never heard of such a thing have always planted them all over the garden
Really? I've always heard that the debris, roots and all were good for enriching the soil. Some people even use it as a kind of cover crop.
@@adamdille6031 i hadn't either. Google it. I was going to compost all the shells from my bird feeders and read that it shouldn't be used in compost. I figured that to be because if a lousy carbon/ nitrogen ratio or something and knew i could fix it. So when i looked to find out what was wrong with composting it i discovered the other properties of the shell, roots etc. I live in a wet climate. Maybe good rainfall continuously flushes the soil enougb that it isnt a problem. I dont know. Just passing on what i read. Worth looking into imo.
I love, also, sunflower thats why i have here in my garden
So happy to hear you have sunflowers I your garden !☺️☺️👍🌻
I live in Phx zone 13 can get super 🔥 108-115 degrees.I am going to test it out my frist time with Sun flowers. I love the Red ones more. Will try this Spring of 2024. Thanks for the video!
Beautiful video! thank you
Glad you liked it!🌺🙂
I love your cutting advice and the blooper! Lol.
May I add something?
If I anticipate my heads will be large and heavy, I begin adding dirt around the base for support (they will take root as you add the dirt). Also, some of my species will have up to 25 or more buds per plant (by end of season). I cut the large leaves about half way back and this seems to encourage the extra blossoms. Sunflowers love our soil here in southern Ohio!
(The giants do no have the extra blossoms for me)
Nice to meet ya!🌻
Great tips! What gorgeous gardens!
Oh and Im in Rhode Island, close to you!
So glad you liked it Heidi . Love your channel!👏☺
Hey thanks for checking in 👋🌍. You are pretty close 🌻
watching from north bay , ontario. have always wanted to grow sunflowers and never knew they were so maintenance free. i will be dropping about 20 seeds next april
So happy to read this . Make sure there is no more threat if frost and that the ground has a chance to warm up . I know it gets cold by you so maybe wait until mid May to plant . One year I planted hundreds of seeds too soon in the season and did not have a good crop .
Thanks for checking in from Ontario 🌸🌍👏🤗👋🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
