    I’m on my second year with sunflowers and this was very helpful! Both years I thought I was doing something wrong because they are so slow to grow, but now I see it really is a slow grower at first. And I need to fertilize much, much more. Thank you!

      Yeah thats it, they take a bit of time at the start. Any giant veg are heavy feeders so they probably can't have too much. Be careful not to feed them when they're small though. Once they're 3 foot ish that's when they'll appreciate the extra

    • @elijahbowden6970
      @elijahbowden6970 2 роки тому

      That is the way mine grow, seems like they like it a little heavy on the fertilizer.

    Hi Love your preparations before and after planting, I've been trying to to get over 12 Foot by growing in pots and feeding seaweed etc but only ever achieved over 12 foot once and got to 13' 4" by peeing on it every night after coming back from the Pub so I'm going to a local brewery to get some Hops this year
    and see if that helps cause that's all I can put the 13' 4" success to.

      @@NovemberRain313 Hi Sorry for the late reply. Last year was the first year that I have tried to grow a tall Sunflower in a pot or anywhere else for that matter. The Pot I used was
      12" Diameter & 14" in depth. The seed was a Mongolian which I started in a Bio-Degradable so as not to disturb the roots when planting on in the main Pot and a lot of gravel for drainage,. I mixed B.F. & Bone, then Later on Chicken Pellets plus Farmyard Manure and finally my Coup-de-Grace I peed on it every night after going out for a few Pints at my Local.
      This year I have used every imaginable fertilizer going i.e. Seaweed, Chicken Pellets, B.F. & Bone, Potash Granules Slow release Pellets, Manure I have thrown the lot in and mixed altogether but also used Perlite & Vermiculite to make the soil drain well but yet retain moisture. So we shall see what happens. At the present time it's growing as though it's going out of fashion so I'm hopeful of beating last years. Forgot to add after it gets established then the hops will begin after I've had a Pint or two.
      Best of Luck and keeps us informed of progress.

      I'm not entirely sure, they usually eventually die off. Time will tell, do everything you would have otherwise done and they may still be ok 👍

      Not bad really, but when leaves are yellowing from the bottom upward, normally that is the plant moving nutrients from the older bottom to the younger, actively growing leaves and shoots. This doesn't necessarily mean the plant isn't healthy, but it usually does mean that the plant would appreciate a little nitrogen fertilizer. Usually. Try it taking baby steps. Test with a very tough plant you know you can't burn or don't mind over fertilizing. Or just start with a miniscule amount. Fast growing annuals like sunflowers can get by with surprisingly little nutrition, but often will really blow your mind if fed as much as the plant can digest without nutrient burn.

    Sunflowers are a TAP ROOT plant and as such do better when direct sowed and not inhibited by a transplant container.

    • @TheGreyGardener1990
      @TheGreyGardener1990  Рік тому

      Yes agreed but if you want to start them off early, it's not much use sowing them direct as the frost will get them. They're OK if you don't leave them in the pots for too long

    Don't sunflowers usually kill other plants? I wouldn't plant them by any of my other crops.

      I wouldn't say so specifically that I'm aware of. They're everywhere though, so chances are they'll be walking amongst the veg during the night
