Why You Should Deadhead Hydrangeas! | Cranbury Fields Flower Farm

- Should I deadhead my hydrangeas is a question i get asked a lot. I will show you how and when to deadhead hydrangeas - and explain the differences between deadheading hydrangeas and pruning hydrangeas .
"Whether to prune hydrangeas is often debated, but studies have shown that dead-heading spent flowers definitely encourages more and bigger blooms. All hydrangeas benefit from regular dead-heading to encourage more hydrangea blooms.

I love your philosophy of not stressing because our gardens should gives us peace. I needed that! Thank you!
Thank you Lani loved your comment . Made my day 🤗🌸
@@KellyLehman Thanks for this video it answered my question on deadheading my hydr. Time to finish my second cup of coffee ☕ and get to work. I do agree with Lani does give us peace
I love how you explain everything simply and in detail ❤ Thank you so much!
I just moved from Hawaii to the PNW. I'm excited that I bought a home with a few hydrangea plants but had no idea how to care for them. I just watched 3 videos from others who talked about deadheading, pruning, new growth, old growth. I had no idea what they were talking about until I came across your video here. I love your enthusiasm and all the info you provided. Excellent video! I'm going to watch all of your videos now. House cleaning can wait! 😁
How many people watching never paid attention to the flowers? I was too busy just looking at this beautiful dog. Golly-gee!
Haaa , yes Lucy is quite the show stealer 🌸🤗
We all love seeing that pup. She is always at her mama’s feet:). Watch the video! Once for the dog, one for the content, lol.
Forget the mutt, Kelly is eye candy.
Thank you SO MUCH for your hydrangea videos and explaining the difference between deadheading vs. pruning, old wood vs new wood, etc. I'm a hydrangea newbie and it was so frustrating hearing these terms and no one was expanding on them. Everything is crystal clear now! Thanks again!
Thank you for your super kind comment . Made my day flower friend 🌸🌸🌸💃💃💃
I could not agree more with this commenter. Thank you for helping a beginner Gardner by explaining even the basics!
Ok, we now know we totally screwed up our hydrangeas. My husband was cutting the WHOLE PLANT back to the ground in Sept. once the leaves turn completely black from frost. We get huge lush green bushes back in the spring, but no flowers. My question is, do we just leave the plant go from now on, even with those black dead leaves?
I appreciate how you actually show the blooms, buds etc that we are supposed to look for. Of all the videos i have watched on hydrangeas, yours is definitely the best! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your kind comment Vicki 😊 I'm so glad you found the video helpful 🌸👍
I have spine degenerative disease and this helps me so much thank you good advice.
Thank you for these videos! I have always been terrible with plants and need someone to walk me through everything step by step. Now I feel much more confident in how to help my hydrangeas grow beautifully!!
Thank you for your videos. I've watched a couple about Hydrangeas. They are detailed enough and short. They sure have helped me to know how to get more blooms and for some years blooms at all.
Sometimes, that’s all a person needs, is to hear someone say not to stress. I’ve been stressing about when to deadhead. I realize now that what I did last year, was I pruned two of my plants instead of deadheading. I’m going out to deadhead this morning, things will look neater. Thanks for giving me that extra push and confidence.
Loved your beautiful comment . I often need to hear the words “ don’t stress” myself. Thank you for your comment made my day 🤗🌸❤️
Needed tips how to care for my beautiful Hydrangea and found your video!
I am learning to tend to our garden one step at a time!
Watching from Spain!
Thanks for your easy-to-follow tutorial! 🤗🌻🕊️
Thanks for telling us about dead heading. This is exactly what I needed to know.
I pruned one of my hydrangeas in late spring and should have done it earlier. I am hoping it blooms well next season. Thank you; this is helpful.
So excited to have found your channel! I’m a newbie to flower gardening. Hydrangea are my all time favorite flowers and I planted two of them! Unfortunately, here in MA, it’s been so hot this summer, my beautiful blue blooms are now green. Still pretty, but not as pretty as the blue. I’ve done my best to keep up with watering (despite a ban), but I’m afraid it’s just been too hot. I had hoped they’d stay bluer longer.
This video was SO helpful to learn when and how to deadhead. I’ll be sure to this in the Spring. Fingers crossed next year’s blooms will be just as plentiful.
Looking forward to many more of your helpful and easy to understand gardening tips!!! 💕
I love your attitude while helping us learn!
Thank you Lynn, that was such. Nice comment to read . Made my day 🌸👍❤️
Now I find your videos! I cut mine back completely. It is beautifully green and full now but no flowers . Guess that comes back next year. Thank you for your videos.
Thank you for clarifying the difference in dead heading and pruning!!
You're welcome ! Glad it was helpful 🌸👍

For tall or hard to reach plants, I use an aluminum telescopic pruner, often sold for weeding ponds. It was around $70.

love it, from Oxford UK x
“Dead heading is not the same as pruning”. I was literally thinking in my head right before you said that if this controls the size of the plant. Thank you for pointing that out. ☺️
I'm glad to hear that clarification was helpful 😊🌸👍
This was very helpful. Ty

Thank you so much for this video. I’m a noob in gardening and hydrangeas. I live in Kansas City and I’m wondering when is it the right time to “deadhead”. Thanks in advance.
Beautiful flowers
Thanks for visiting🌸
We bought a home with the biggest plant I’ve ever seen, she is old. Can’t believe I didn’t kill her. Anyways, past 8 years I have seriously over pruned. Last year I didn’t touch the plant and this spring I did what i just saw you do (I don’t know what inspired me). Now she has more budding than ever! All the stems are standing! Perhaps no more flowers laying on the ground, we have super strong stems this year. I need to sub ‘cause my wife loves those huge white flowers. Teach me lady, teach me.
Good looking pup
Thanks so much !
You're welcome Linda 👍 !

Nice share

@@KellyLehman :)
HI and thanks for your videos, I have a 30 yr old climbing hydrangea. It sits like a canapy. I have to trim in early spring because it gets too heavy.. But underneath the canopy is lots of old wood with thick hard to trim branches. I have tried to get throw them but sometimes I have not been able.. A few. pieces could use a very strong person or a saw? I think if I could trim it it would fill out underneath. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks again for all your info you share!

I’m British and lived in the US for many years trying to make a UK garden with plants I grew in temperate England….big mistake….. in Maryland close to DC where temperatures are far from temperate winter or summer.
I pruned a number of different hydrangeas the same way not realising that some bloom on old wood, some on new. Wish I’d seen this video before. I did eventually research the problem and had many lovely blooms on the variety of hydrangeas growing happily in the semi shade of my deciduous garden trees! Back home in soggy UK the same is true…know your plants flowering habits!
Hello! I live in Canada and I love Hydrangeas. I have a question for you, when do I headhead my hydrangeas? Thank you
One question no I just bought two new who had your ranges to add to my collection in the flowers are spent should I deadhead before I introduce them to my garden?
Thank you
You're welcome 😊🌸👍
Thanks. I used this advice to deadhead my hydrangeas. Do the dead flowers fall off on their own if you don't deadhead them or would they be there next to the new flowers in summer?
Good compost material!
Good point , thank you for sharing with the flower tribe 🌸
讲的很详细
😁😁😁
Hi I brought a fully bloom hydrangea in May of this year. It already had 8 flower.. I watched your video and you advised to cut them once the were spent, which I did sometime in June. I repotted it & added some compost ( Garden Scape mushroom compost, to be exact) to the soil. And from the it began to grow taller/ fuller with most beautiful foliage. From the repotting I expected it to put out more blooms because the description that was stuck inside the soil said that it blooms into the fall. My question is was I nieve to believe that it would bloom again at the end of the summer? And should I give it fertilizer before it goes into dormant for the winter? Remember this is a potted hydrangea 😊
I cut my dead blooms , like she showed, at the end of summer.....new growth of leaves and Blooms develop the next season.
Hi Kelly can I rightly assume that this only applies to Macrophylla types. Love your channel
