    I planted sunflowers for the first time this year 2020 and how amazing are these sunflowers! The seed were sent to me as a promotion to help the bees to thrive. Absolutely, love that idea to store the seeds in a mason jar as I was wondering the best way to store them and remember the next year to plant them. Many thanks for your video and ideas!

      Hi Lisa , yay you ! So happy to hear you have sunflowers and bees 🐝. Super combination .
      The best way to store the sunflower seeds is to make sure they are super dry before putting them in the mason jars . Then find a cool dark place to leave the jars in and you are all set until it’s time to plant the sunflower seeds in spring . Happy planting 👍🌻🤗

    Hi Kelly,
    I planted sunflowers for the first time in 2021 here in South Australia, Australia. What I love about these flowers is that they just make me happy and bring me joy. So much so that I have made it a mission to plant them every year from now on. I watched your video on how to harvest the seeds and plan to do them and share with friends. I'm also going to check out your other videos just because you have such a nice vibe about you. Have a nice day :)

    Hi. Just come across your video today. I'm from New Zealand so my seasons are opposite. I tried planting Sun Flower from seeds that were given to me, for first time. I planted from in my greenhouse early spring and transplanted to a spot in my garden at start of summer. They worked out very well and want to try growing from my current crop. Our summer season is about to come to an end. I found your video very helpful. Thank you.

    Planted my first Black Russian sunflower and it is now in full bloom! That got me hooked to growing more, the only limit is space!! The bright yellow really cheers up the garden:) And yes she's hungry for sunlight and will bend her whole stem out searching for the sun!

    I have 2 questions. Can I cut my dying sunflower heads earlier and let the head dry out somewhere out of sight before harvesting the seeds so it's not an eye sore? Second question is how long does it take for seeds to dry out before I can replant? I live in California, so we don't get frost seasons very often.

    Hi Kelly, nice informative video you have about sunflowers. I grow sunflowers every year , the giant variety and the dwarf ones. This year, I decided to save all the seeds . I dried the seeds under the sun...will they still germinate next year?

      @KellyLehman  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for your sunflower question 👏🌻. Yes as long as you harvested them when they were super mature and plump . They should give you lovely sunflowers next summer . 🤗🤗🌻🌻🌻

    Viewing from England. I think I planted my seeds to late this year. What is the latest you can plant them. I have seen big heads of sunflowers on sale in fruit and veg shop. The back of at least some of them seems a bit damp and they are partly green. What should I do to store these seeds?

    You can also start your sunflower seeds, before the last frost, by putting them in a folded paper towel, sprayed with water & put them in a container like a shallow plastic container with a lid. That keeps the moisture in & in about a week or so they will have sprouted a root tendril, then you can plant them.

    You save your flower seeds. How is that possible when (my understanding that most sunflowers are hybrids). How do you get the same flower from open pollination? Love this video.

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Avis , awesome sunflower question! 👏👏 I grow a lot of different varieties of sunflowers . I also have a honeybee hive so lots of cross pollination takes place in the field . The seeds I harvest give me flowers the following year that are a mixture of the varieties. It’s pretty cool to see the blends . 🌸🌸🌻🌻🌻

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 роки тому

      Hi Karen , i dont think so . As long as you keep them away from sunlight and a heat source they should be good . In a few weeks, you can put them in a paper bar or mason jars and store them in a cool dark place like a basement until spring comes .Happy gardening ! 🌸😊Kelly

    Hey Kelly, I had a really cool looking sunflower pop up this year, and I want to save some seeds for planting. My question though, is whether I can plant the seeds directly from the sunflower head- into the dirt; as they are coming off easily right now. Do I absolutely have to store them for a couple months, and completely dry them for them to grow? Or could I just throw them in the dirt immediately? I threw a couple in the dirt about a week ago and nothing has popped up yet. Thanks!

    I had my first sunflower field this summer in MN 1 hour south of the Twin Cities. I had no idea what I was doing. We planted them very close together to drown out the weeds of a field that had not been used for over 40 years. It worked well. We had so many flowers and it was so much fun. I tried to harvest the seeds from the sunflowers. I put them in a bag and left it open to help the seeds dry, but within a few weeks, they were all moldy. I'm guessing some would have been okay, but I tossed the entire thing. Any advice on how to dry out a lot of seeds. Also, have you ever dried the flowers themselves for wreaths or a dried flower bouquet and if so, how? Thank you so much for your videos. I love them! Ann

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Ann , oh wow ! I'll bet your sunflowers were amazing ! Well done .
      I think that there must have been moisture on the seeds when you stored them . I cut mine from the field when the sunflower seeds are super plump and i can easily pluck them from the center . The i hang them upside down in my barn for a few weeks to make sure they are super dry before i put them in paper bags or jars to store. I also put t hem in a cool dark place .
      To dry them out for dried flower arrangements, harvest them when they blow full open and hang them upside down in a cool dry place or leave in a vase with no water . make sure they have lots of airflow around them .

      Hey Naty, i think thats a good idea . Ive never grown them in a paradise climate like yours but the back to back growing season makes sense to me . Just make sure that the sunflower seeds you harvest are completely mature on the plant . They should be very plump and will be pretty easy to remove .

    Hi Kelly! Thank you for this great video. I bought a few sunflowers from a local Orchard and can't wait to save the seeds to try and grow them myself. But anytime we've tried planting the seeds they get eaten by squirrels and chipmunks. I'm in Northern NJ and our property backs up to a state park and we get lots of wildlife that eat a lot of our flowers and vegetables. Is there any way we can plant the sunflower seeds to prevent them from being eaten before they even have a chance to germinate? Thank you very much!🌻🐿
