    I’m a teen who has absolutely no experience with gardening at all, but I just ordered a bunch of seeds and I’m going to start growing this year! Not sure how it’s going to work out but I really hope I can grow sunflowers

      Go research some permaculture. Best way to start gardening the right way. Teaches how to build a mini ecosystem were everything works. Nature works. So copy it.

      Angelina Marie . Hi Angelina , so excited for your new sunflower venture . I’m actually what I call a minimalist flower farmer . I usually plant seeds that I know can grow easily without the use of fertilizers or plant food and can be direct seeded . For my sunflowers , I plant them right into the ground a few weeks after the last frost so the soil is warm enough . Follow the planting instructions on the back of the seed packet so you know how deep to dig your hole . Usually just an inch or two . Make sure they get full sunlight and enough moisture . The seeds won’t stray to grow until they are wet so once you put them in the ground sprinkle the area with enough water to give them a good drink so they can Start the growing process . They take a long time to come up so be very patient. Let me know how they turn out ! Good luck 🍀👍

      @@jamessparkman6604 , I love them too but make sure you the height is not going to a problem. I had some grow up to 14 feet into a tree. It also lost some sun
      hours due to the sun moved and got blocked.

    Beautiful sunflowers. Thank you for the tips. I was given a seedling from my local community garden here in Australia and since then I bought a packet of seeds and I have over 50 growing in my backyard. They bring so much joy. 🌻

      @KellyLehman  4 роки тому

      Hi Fay, oh thats so awesome that your local community garden gave these sunflowers seeds out . What a beautiful gift to give. So happy to hear you planted more . It gets addicting doesn't it . Once you see a batch of sunflowers blooming in your garden you just want them to come back every year. How did you do with all the crazy brush fires ? where you near any of them? That was crazy .

    • @fay1298
      @fay1298 4 роки тому

      Thank you Kelly. Our community garden is run by the local church and people meet bi-monthly to exchange seeds, take herbs and vegetables from the garden and enjoy a cup of tea with neighbours. It is run by wonderful group of volunteers. The fires were crazy for sure. We were thankfully far away as the fires mainly burnt in national parks and regional areas. Last week we had torrential rains and it put out most of the fires that have been burning for 3 months. It was crazy really. Thanks for asking. I’ll keep enjoying your tips on gardening.

      I would cut them in the morning when they are just opening but not in an exhausted “dehydrated from the sun “ full blown for days stage. Bring them to a cool dry dark place and hang upside down to dry out . You can give them a shot of floral spray paint to brighten the colors up . • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  4 роки тому

      Thank you for your kind comment. So happy you discovered gardening ! Sometimes my sunflowers get brown spots due to too much rain in a short period of time. i looked up some info regarding the brown spots and yellowing leaves. here is the info i found .. Fertilize the sunflower if its lower leaves begin to yellow and drop and you have not been fertilizing it. The leaf symptoms could be signs that the plant lacks nitrogen. Mix about 3/4 to 1 teaspoon of fertilizer labeled as 15-5-15 with calcium and magnesium (Cal-Mg) with 1 gallon of water. Use this water-fertilizer solution when you water the potted sunflower, ensuring that you do not get any of the solution on the plant's leaves. Stop fertilizing the sunflower about one week before it is expected to bloom, which varies among cultivars. This info was from homeguides.sfgate.com/potted-sunflower-dying-75658.html . Good luck with your sunflowers !

    My favorite flowers are Zinnias. Thanks for the video. I love sunflowers and I've planted a lot of seeds last year and none came up. Not one. Any tips on growing them? I purchased new seeds from my botanical garden gift shop Mammoth Russian and Evening Sun by Botanical Interests. In years pass, I had one the big size of the one you showed in your video but it didn't last long because the squirrels hop the fence and plop right on it and bite it down. Uggghh... Would love to see an actual video on how you sow your sunflower seeds in the ground. Thanks again.

      That's an awesome idea for a video! I will make one in spring to show how I sow them directly into the ground after the danger of frost has passed. Last summer I also had a problem getting flowers from a crop of sunflowers I planted too early in the season. I have a feeling the ground was still too cold so they never got started properly . I always have really good luck with pro cut orange sunflower seeds and the giant Mammoth Sunflowers. Im with you with the zinnia love . They are so beautiful and easy to grow. I'll make a video on how we sow these seeds too. Thank you for your comments . Love them .

      Hi Amelia, you are very welcome. I often hang my sunflowers upside down to dry them out completely after they start to turn brown and the seeds look large and loose . I also store them in cardboard boxes or paper bags and keep them in a cool dark place . I don’t think they need to be planted in pairs but they do look super pretty when planted in groups . 🌻🌻😊

    Love this video!! I'm growing sunflowers for the first time; they are about a foot tall now. Some of the leaves are turning brown on the tips. I noticed in your video that some leaf tips are also brown like mine. Any idea what it may be?

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  5 років тому +2

      Hi Catherine . Super question!!! I’m actually going to make a video on this because of your question . The short answer is .... the leaves will turn brown for a number of reasons . I have a crop coming up now that has done very brown leaves due to lots of rain and then a cold snap . Too much water and chilly temps will do that ti leaves .
      Another reason they may turn brown is a lack of nitrogen in the soil. You can have your soil tested to see if it’s missing nutrients .
      I’ll bet tom your spots are just from too much water . If some of the leaves are still green and lush , I wouldn’t worry about it . The flowers should still be lovely . Thanks for your question 👍🌸

      Yifat Mabary Great question . If you are cutting them for cut flowers, wait until one or two of the yellow petals just start lifting off the center . It’s even better if you can cut them just before they lift . Keep them cool so they keep longer . You can also dry cut them and keep them in refrigeration until you are ready to have them open up a few weeks later .

I bought a bag and then did some googling and it seems they are a hoax. If they are is there a way to add coloring to the water (I know) to have them shift into the more pink side? I know there are the reds and bought some chocolate reds as contrast but I'm really disappointed with my pink findings. Could you help me with accurate information and if there is a way to have them propagate to a pinker shade every year?

    • @KellyLehman

      Thank you for your kind comments .

    I was wondering if it is possible to dry lupin seeds and if so when should I start to dry .🇬🇧

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  3 роки тому

      Hi Angela, yes it is possible . Here is some information I found on how to dry them . Hope you find this helpful 🤗🌸
      Pick the lupine seeds from plants when the seed pods turn yellow and rattle inside the pod when shaken, somewhere from June through August. Carefully pick the pods so they do not explode. Place the seeds in a paper bag for a couple of weeks to finish drying. Pinch the dried seed pods until they release the seeds. Fill an envelope with the seeds and label. Store the seeds in a dry location until spring.
      Place the seeds in a resealable plastic bag with a couple of moist paper towels when outside temperatures stay above 55 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Seal the bag and place the seeds in the refrigerator for seven days. Lupine seeds seem to germinate better after cold treatment.
      Scratch through the coating with a nail file on one side of the seed and place in warm water to soak for three hours. Check the seeds in the water. The lupine seeds that sink to the bottom are ready to plant. Fish out the floating seeds and scratch them again. Soak the floaters in warm water again until they sink.
      Dig the soil to a depth of 12 to 20 inches with a shovel in an area with full sun or light shade. Lupines grow best in dry sandy or gravelly soil but do not survive constantly damp and heavy soil. Break the soil up with the edge of the shovel and rake smooth. The deep soil supports the long taproot that lupine flowers develop which anchors the long flower spike and lets the plant survive drought conditions.
      Lay the seeds on top of the soil, spacing the seeds 12 inches apart. Cover the seeds with 1/8 inch of soil and sprinkle water over the planting area. Keep the soil moist throughout the germination process. It takes 15 to 75 days for lupine sprouts to appear when the soil is 55 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

      I just found this information for you . Hope you find it helpful 😊😊🌻🌻
      Sunflowers thrive in slightly acidic to somewhat alkaline soil (pH 6.0 to 7.5). Sunflowers are heavy feeders, so the soil needs to be nutrient-rich with organic matter or composted (aged) manure. Or, work in a slow release granular fertilizer 8 inches deep into your soil.

      The sunflowers you see in this video had no extra fertilizers added. However, i have another field of sunflowers that came up in this field this year ( one year after i made the video) and they were horrible. Apparently, sunflowers are big soil feeders and deplete the soil of nutrients. I asked some of the local sunflower farmers near me for their advice and they recommended adding a n10-10-10 fertilizer ( found in home depot and lowes or most garden centers) . i am adding this to my soil this weekend and planting another 2,000 sunflower seeds in hopes that they bloom before the first frost here in late October. Let me know if you have better luck next season with your sunflowers . Good luck 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
