  • With Storms Dudley and Eunice sweeping the Uk, I've taken the opportunity to get ahead with tying up the rigs I provide for wreck fishing on Sea Urchin. If you need to use my gear this year on your wrecking trip, this is what you'll be getting.

    Should the bottom of the standoff loop be at the same level as the loop for the weight, or should it be above? Thanks

    • @whitbywreckandreeffishing
      @whitbywreckandreeffishing  8 днів тому +1

      I like to have the stand-off loop around 12 inches above the lead. By the time the muppet, hooks and bait are added, the bait will be 6-8 inches off the bottom.
      I find this helps reduce getting stuck in the wrecks quite as much as a trace which is dragging bottom. Hope that helps. Regards, Andy

    Interesting, thanks. I don't know what depth you are fishing but I would imagine the water is deeper than red or yellow light penetrate (around 10 and 20 metres respectively on a perfect day), I have caught a few pollock recently with a red and white striped lure at about 30m, but I guess the fish only see it as grey and white.

      Thanks John. We generally fish in 50-60m off Whitby. I honestly think that people should use the colour they are most confident in, as there doesn’t seem to be any hard and fast rule.
      When the fish are feeding well, you’ll usually catch on any colour.
      Regards
      Andy

      @@whitbywreckandreeffishing Yes, at that depth the only colour fish would see is blue. All other colours would appear dark grey, so if it isn't blue the colour doesn't matter.

    hello andy, some great videos mate. just wondering if it would be better to use a rotten botton on the end of your wrecking rig.

    • @whitbywreckandreeffishing
      @whitbywreckandreeffishing  Рік тому +1

      Thanks very much for the feedback, it's really appreciated. I've personally used rotten bottoms for wrecking in the past and still see a few lads using them now. To be honest, I find they make little difference on the wrecks. More often than not, it's the hooks which seem to get caught up.
      If a lead gets stuck, I can quite often tease it out of the wreck with my hand, so I don't bother with tying up rotten bottoms. The lads that I do see use them still lose a similar amount of gear.
      Regards
      Andy

      Hi Robert. Many thanks for the kind words. On theses traces at Whitby, we generally use either a whole Squid or a Mackerel fillet. They catch us plenty of Cod and Ling. 👍

    Where do you get your muppets from and would you be able to set up a 2 hook rig up with a smaller bait below

    • @whitbywreckandreeffishing
      @whitbywreckandreeffishing  Рік тому

      They are the 10” Fish Eagle Muppets. You can tie as many stand off loops as you like on the trace. I only use one loop to minimise tackle losses in the wrecks. Works fine with two and a smaller bait though 👍

      @@whitbywreckandreeffishing what would be the minimum lb trace would you use. Could you use a shockleader for the whole thing or not.. I normally go on trips out but normally only get feather so trying to make a few rig up so I can ask to change

    • @whitbywreckandreeffishing
      @whitbywreckandreeffishing  Рік тому

      @@danonline19 you can make the traces on whatever strength line you like. Depends on what you’re targeting and what ground. The lighter the line, the more twists you will need to put in, to stop the knot slipping. I just use 100lb for Cod and Ling on wrecks. I certainly wouldn’t go below 60lb as I want to land what I hook. Regards, Andy

    Thank you for a informative video and although I will never be fishing from your end of the land as I live on the Isle of Wight
    I am just going to be getting some black muppets to add to my collection and also will be only using one hook on some of my traces hopefully we all can get out soon once this nasty wind dies down and put your advice to good use 👍

      Hi Jonathon. Apologies for the delayed response, not sure how I missed this. I always have loads of gear on board, as people regularly run out of leads, or want to use my bait traces instead of the ones they have etc. I can sort out any end gear shortages you might have. 12oz leads are 4 for £5 and the same for bait traces.

    Those dark colors, (black or dark purple) squid lures or even jigs are lethal in dirt water or at night. And it really doesn't matter what you're working on as far as species goes.

      @whitbywreckandreeffishing  Рік тому

      @@mattdaniels6873 I personally prefer prefer Flourocarbon for longer flowing traces (uptiding in particular) as it straightens better than mono, doesn’t have as much memory. For wrecking and rough ground, I don’t think there’s any benefit to using it. 100lb mono works really well for me, in the applications we use.
