Cheers Jim, thanks very much for the kind words. Please keep your channel going. It inspires me to not get rid of my Carp gear! I haven’t had a go for a year or so, but your videos and style of fishing are what I want to get back to in a few years. Best Regards Andy 👍
Fantastic video Andy - my mates will be coming up next year for our first Whitby outing and YOU are the skipper for that charter 100%. Great content as always
Fantastic!!! I now know when to use what and I will only need to carry one box on the boat!!! Thanks Andy!!! I wish for beautiful weather in Whidby!!! Thank you very much for the video!!!
Hello Sir , that's great info . We often carry too much stuff on the boat . I'm boat fishing in the southwest of France (near Spain border ), and I think I can adapt your methods to my fishing grounds .Thank you for this excellent video . Fred
Thanks very much Fred. I’m sure there will be some things that will be transferrable for some of the species you target. Good luck with your fishing. Best Regards, Andy 👍
Thanks for the kind words. I agree regarding the two different approaches to Shadding. I think (could be wrong) that the main target species on the South Coast for Shads is Pollock which like a chase and can often be up off the bottom, hence the wind up. Up here in the North it’s mainly Cod we are targeting with the Shads, which you generally catch on the deck or close to it. Hopping for Cod and winding for Pollock is the approach I adopt personally. Regards Andy
Great video. I’ve found It’s completely different tactics when fishing shads on the south coast to north east coast. On the south coast when you hit bottom you slow wind up counting the turns of the reel handle (anywhere up to 100+ turns to find the fish depth). Whereas on the north east coast it’s more of a ‘hopping’ action. But the common fishing tactic anywhere is always listen to the advice of the skipper.
Thanks for the kind feedback. I think the Shadding on the South Coast is primarily aimed at catching Pollock, which sit at different depths and like a chase. Up here in the North we are targeting Codling (in the main) and they are generally caught on the bottom, or just off it. That's why hopping works sp well up here I think. Regards Andy
@ it is pollock which is the main target when I go south. Us ‘northerners’ have to get use to just keep winding when a pollock is plucking the tail of the lure, don’t stop or strike. Just keep winding & let the fish hook itself when it goes for a dive,
Hey Andy hope your well.. dunno if you can remember me was on your boat few weeks back at the back of the boat shad fishing I gave your young lad the prawn lure lol.. hey just wanted to say about time you put a video on here was beginning to think you have dropped the channel... Shame because your videos are actually really educational and thats where I've got most of my shading tactics from but nice to see your back mate tight lines ⛵ 🎣
Hi Nathaniel. Yes, I remember the day you were with us Shadding. I’d love to do more videos but it’s just finding the time and weather windows to have a go. Hopefully see you for another day out in the future mate. Best Regards, Andy
Excellent video Andy I must give the boat a go next year there is that much gear on the market its crazy there should be laws against it I must have 30 different types of mackerel lure and I know they will just go for a shiney bare hooks keep the videos coming can you do one aimed at wasting loads of money on gear you don’t need I think I need to watch it
Thanks very much Kevin. I think we’re all probably guilty of buying loads of tackle we don’t need (I know I am! 😅). Don’t get into Slow pitch Jigging…..cost me a fortune buying all manner them 😂😂
Great informative video andy, Im not a top angler by any means, But one thing did confuse me, You say you were using 60/80lb braid for your mainline, And 100lb for you muppet trace line, If it does get snagged, Whats going to break 1st, Sorry if its a stupid question, ta Bob,
Hi Bob. Thanks very much. When you are using the wrecking traces, I find that you normally lose everything. That's the reason why I use so few components on the trace itself (a muppet, two hooks and a bit of line). I know some people like to use a rotten bottom and sometimes they just lose the lead, but from my observations, I think that is counter intuitive. There's so much old gear on the wrecks, that quite often you can pull through it, getting all your gear back. But when I have to do this for anglers fishing with a rotten bottom, I find that they lose more leads than the anglers who are fishing straight through. The wrecking rig is the only one I use that isn't tapered to break off just the hooks. Hope that makes sense. Regards Andy
Hi Oliver. If you are on the back of the boat and are casting downtide at Whitby, I recommend using the same 6oz grip leads. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, the ground which we fish at anchor in the winter is rough to very rough. If you cast a regular lead downtide, generally it will roll around in the tide, until it falls down in-between some rocks etc, More often than not, this results in lost tackle from what I have observed. Obviously, if you were fishing on broken or sandy ground, this tactic of using a regular lead would work well. Secondly, when fishing at anchor on a Charter boat, there are multiple lines running through the back of the boat. Any leads which are rolling around in the tide just increase the number of tangles we get. That said, I do have some regulars who like to put on a regular 12oz lead and just lower it over the side and catch under the boat. Hope that helps. Regards Andy
Fair prices on your tackle a honest information.Have you had anglers aboard with custom made rods.I have built rods for Daiwas Steve Souter and Scott Gibson. And charter boats and there customers here in Shetland.lm not looking for more business but would be interesting to know if they have Been used on your boat.My Dad was a commercial Fisherman out of Whitby for many years.
Thanks Tom. I have a few lads who use custom Japanese rods, so I’m guessing it won’t be them you’re referring to. Other than that, the rods are off the shelves from the main usual brands. Regards, Andy

Brilliant stuff Andy, everything I know about boat fisdhing is down to you and your methods work just fine down here on the South coast.
