What Rigs to use for boat fishing at Whitby?
A basic guide to the seasonal rigs that I have found productive for boat fishing off Whitby, in North Yorkshire for Cod, Ling, Pollock. A lot of new anglers to Whitby seem to struggle with using the right gear for the job.
The aim of the video is to give anyone who hasn't boat fished from Whitby, or is new to boat fishing on the Yorkshire Coast an idea of what rigs and leads work well.
As a a Charter Skipper I regularly see lots of ill equipped anglers, so I hope that the information will be useful for some.

Fishing with Shads is great fun and can catch plenty of fish at Whitby. The aim of the video is to give an insight into the tackle to use and the methods of actually fishing the Shads. It isn't difficult to do, but is still a quite underused tactic on my Charter Boat. Why not give it a go next time you're out boat fishing......

The last dates in the diary to get booked are the Spring Tides. I made this video to demonstrate that you can still have some great sport on the Spring Tides. It's all about controlling the tackle. The fish are still there, but you have to co troll the tackle properly to get consistent bites.

Also a quick tour round Sea Urchin with the Skipper to show you what the boat has to offer.
Uptiding for Codling - Boosted Baits v Natural Baits

An unscientific test to look at the difference between fishing boosted baits against regular baits during a couple of hours fishing at Whitby. Some anglers swear by dipping their baits in a secret concoction they have made up. Does it really make a difference to your catch rate, or is it more of a confidence booster? This test was conducted using frozen squid and frozen Black Lugworm. Fresh/Liv...

Bait Fishing for Mackerel at Whitby
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
Everyone likes catching Mackerel. On Sea Urchin, we catch them for bait in the summer before we target the Codling & Ling. I regularly see some common mistakes that people make, who aren't familiar with the "Macky Bash"!. I had hoped to make a Shadding Video today, but the big tide and wind made the drift impossible. Hopefully, a couple of pointers for those who are new to boat fishing.

A video for boat anglers visiting Whitby in the winter for some Uptiding/Downtiding fishing. Basic advice and tips to get you going, so you can make the most of your day at sea on Sea Urchin III. Really sorry about the poor sound quality in parts. The wind was a lot stronger than anticipated. Something I need to work on in the future.
What knot do you use for your end loops?
you don't have a knot on the loop
@@Pigeon291 there are two loops on the ends of the rig
Hi Carl. I tie a large Figure of Eight knot in each end so you can loop to loop everything on and off easily. Cheers, Andy
Fantastic video Andy - my mates will be coming up next year for our first Whitby outing and YOU are the skipper for that charter 100%. Great content as always
Thanks very much for taking time to comment. Hopefully see you next year for a trip out. Best Regards, Andy 👍
Nice one Andy...great advice, years of experience right there 👏🏻🎣
Cheers Jim, thanks very much for the kind words. Please keep your channel going. It inspires me to not get rid of my Carp gear! I haven’t had a go for a year or so, but your videos and style of fishing are what I want to get back to in a few years. Best Regards Andy 👍
I love this video mate learned a lot from watching it a few times but my question is as the water will start to get a dirty colour.. shads will become not very good but instead of a shad on the end could a dead bait fish be used with a big hook through the chin and out the top of the head but same tactics just with an actual dead fish
Great informative video andy, Im not a top angler by any means, But one thing did confuse me, You say you were using 60/80lb braid for your mainline, And 100lb for you muppet trace line, If it does get snagged, Whats going to break 1st, Sorry if its a stupid question, ta Bob,
Hi Bob. Thanks very much. When you are using the wrecking traces, I find that you normally lose everything. That's the reason why I use so few components on the trace itself (a muppet, two hooks and a bit of line). I know some people like to use a rotten bottom and sometimes they just lose the lead, but from my observations, I think that is counter intuitive. There's so much old gear on the wrecks, that quite often you can pull through it, getting all your gear back. But when I have to do this for anglers fishing with a rotten bottom, I find that they lose more leads than the anglers who are fishing straight through. The wrecking rig is the only one I use that isn't tapered to break off just the hooks. Hope that makes sense. Regards Andy
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing Cheers Pal.
Excellent video Andy I must give the boat a go next year there is that much gear on the market its crazy there should be laws against it I must have 30 different types of mackerel lure and I know they will just go for a shiney bare hooks keep the videos coming can you do one aimed at wasting loads of money on gear you don’t need I think I need to watch it
Thanks very much Kevin. I think we’re all probably guilty of buying loads of tackle we don’t need (I know I am! 😅). Don’t get into Slow pitch Jigging…..cost me a fortune buying all manner them 😂😂
@ too late Andy already have but without much success unfortunately I still get out fished by the old style Hartlepool rippers
Well done and thankyou all the very best to you.
Thank you very much Martin. Best Regards, Andy
Sage advice as always Andy, see you at the end of the month weather permitting.
Thanks Tony, hopefully we've broken your weather curse now mate!! 😂
Thanks for the kind words. I agree regarding the two different approaches to Shadding. I think (could be wrong) that the main target species on the South Coast for Shads is Pollock which like a chase and can often be up off the bottom, hence the wind up. Up here in the North it’s mainly Cod we are targeting with the Shads, which you generally catch on the deck or close to it. Hopping for Cod and winding for Pollock is the approach I adopt personally. Regards Andy
Great video. I’ve found It’s completely different tactics when fishing shads on the south coast to north east coast. On the south coast when you hit bottom you slow wind up counting the turns of the reel handle (anywhere up to 100+ turns to find the fish depth). Whereas on the north east coast it’s more of a ‘hopping’ action. But the common fishing tactic anywhere is always listen to the advice of the skipper.
Thanks for the kind feedback. I think the Shadding on the South Coast is primarily aimed at catching Pollock, which sit at different depths and like a chase. Up here in the North we are targeting Codling (in the main) and they are generally caught on the bottom, or just off it. That's why hopping works sp well up here I think. Regards Andy
@ it is pollock which is the main target when I go south. Us ‘northerners’ have to get use to just keep winding when a pollock is plucking the tail of the lure, don’t stop or strike. Just keep winding & let the fish hook itself when it goes for a dive,
Thanks Andy, always informative and worth a view 👍. See you soon I hope.
Thanks very much for the kind words. Much appreciated 👍
Hello Sir , that's great info . We often carry too much stuff on the boat . I'm boat fishing in the southwest of France (near Spain border ), and I think I can adapt your methods to my fishing grounds .Thank you for this excellent video . Fred
Thanks very much Fred. I’m sure there will be some things that will be transferrable for some of the species you target. Good luck with your fishing. Best Regards, Andy 👍
Hi Andy you discuss uptide trips and the equipment and tackle you use what if you are on the back of the boat and have to downtide ?
Hi Oliver. If you are on the back of the boat and are casting downtide at Whitby, I recommend using the same 6oz grip leads. The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, the ground which we fish at anchor in the winter is rough to very rough. If you cast a regular lead downtide, generally it will roll around in the tide, until it falls down in-between some rocks etc, More often than not, this results in lost tackle from what I have observed. Obviously, if you were fishing on broken or sandy ground, this tactic of using a regular lead would work well. Secondly, when fishing at anchor on a Charter boat, there are multiple lines running through the back of the boat. Any leads which are rolling around in the tide just increase the number of tangles we get. That said, I do have some regulars who like to put on a regular 12oz lead and just lower it over the side and catch under the boat. Hope that helps. Regards Andy
Fair prices on your tackle a honest information.Have you had anglers aboard with custom made rods.I have built rods for Daiwas Steve Souter and Scott Gibson. And charter boats and there customers here in Shetland.lm not looking for more business but would be interesting to know if they have Been used on your boat.My Dad was a commercial Fisherman out of Whitby for many years.
Thanks Tom. I have a few lads who use custom Japanese rods, so I’m guessing it won’t be them you’re referring to. Other than that, the rods are off the shelves from the main usual brands. Regards, Andy
Brilliant stuff Andy, everything I know about boat fisdhing is down to you and your methods work just fine down here on the South coast.
Thanks very much Ray. It’s great to hear that it’s been useful for you. Good luck with your future trips on the south coast 🎣🐳
Glad your back, great video's

Should the bottom of the standoff loop be at the same level as the loop for the weight, or should it be above? Thanks
I like to have the stand-off loop around 12 inches above the lead. By the time the muppet, hooks and bait are added, the bait will be 6-8 inches off the bottom. I find this helps reduce getting stuck in the wrecks quite as much as a trace which is dragging bottom. Hope that helps. Regards, Andy
Hi ,great video, i just wanted to ask somthing that has confused me, the rod is 14 - 40g but the weights are 3, 4 or 5 oz .I've bought an excel sib and going to try rough ground where I live but the weights plus jig are roughly 120 -150 g how can the rod cope when it states 14 to 40g ? I don't want to break a rod . Thanks
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you found it useful. Every rod blank is different; some have faster tapers than others etc. But to answer the question, the 14-40g rating on this Lure rod is the “casting weight” parameters. When fishing from the boat you are just lowering or flicking a short distance with this style of fishing, so there is no compromise. I’ve fished this setup in 50m of water and 6oz is definitely the most I would use. After that the Rod wasn’t as responsive and couldn’t move the lure. Regards, Andy
Thank you for replying, looking forward to more videos,I'm learning a lot from you 👍
Great stuff. Been out on my small sib but might have to get on one of your trips sometime. Is it generally a bit sketchy directly outside the harbour and then settles as you move away, if conditions are good? I turned around and came back in the other day as it was a bit beyond my comfort levels and 6hp outboard, even though generally sea seemed ok up at Sandsend.
Thanks. The water is shallow outside of the harbour on the Rock Top at Whitby, which is where you see the waves breaking sometimes. It depends entirely on which direction the wind and tide are, as well as how much swell there is as to whether Sandsend is ok. Generally a wind which is off land will afford you some shelter at Sandsend. In a small SIB, it wants to be fairly flat. We had the Whitby Lifeboat out to two idiots fishing in a SIB on the five mile ground in thick fog with Northerly winds and swell yesterday. Despite the advice of the RNLI, they thought they were ok and knew better, so stayed out there. As you probably know, sea conditions can change in minutes. Be safe and happy fishing. Regards, Andy
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing Cheers, yeah I'm just figuring it out but hopefully not taking any chances. Appreciate the advice 👍
Great video, I would like to see a close up of your pots you have for controlling your leads. It really grates on me when when I have anglers out smacking leads off the gelcoat. Thanks
Thanks very much. I haven't been down to the boat today to take a picture, but basically the "lead pots" are from B&Q from the plumbing section. I just drill two holes in the bottom (to release water) and then four holes in the side and Cable Tie them to the rail. Hope that helps a bit. Regards, Andy 👍
Now mate im kinda new to all this sea fishing stuff as sold all my carp gear ans taking up sea fishing now i went out last friday with sea otter 2 i think and safe to say wasnt very pleasant experience if im honest.. but ive been watching nearly all your videos now. Wow big shout out to you mate for the in-depth information you give.. ive noticed you use a multi coloured braid i think on one of your videos please can you tell me where you got it from as seems to be alot of fakes about.. would really appreciate it.. and csnt wait to book on with you once all my new stuff arrives 😊
Hi Nathaniel. Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad that you found the videos useful. The braid I use for wrecking is 60lb Spectra. It’s nice and robust. It’s not the thinnest diameter, but you’re not casting with it, so it’s absolutely fine. You can get Daiwa J Braid multi coloured for around £30 or the Spectra multi coloured for much less www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351973664036 Regards Andy
Interesting, thanks. I don't know what depth you are fishing but I would imagine the water is deeper than red or yellow light penetrate (around 10 and 20 metres respectively on a perfect day), I have caught a few pollock recently with a red and white striped lure at about 30m, but I guess the fish only see it as grey and white.
Thanks John. We generally fish in 50-60m off Whitby. I honestly think that people should use the colour they are most confident in, as there doesn’t seem to be any hard and fast rule. When the fish are feeding well, you’ll usually catch on any colour. Regards Andy
@@whitbywreckandreeffishing Yes, at that depth the only colour fish would see is blue. All other colours would appear dark grey, so if it isn't blue the colour doesn't matter.
Thx
Briliant! Couldn't find any vid with all! Information.....thank you so much!..
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad that you found it useful. Many Thanks, Andy
Do you still run trips
Yes, I run trips all year round. Regards, Andy
Which model reel do you Andy
Hi Andy. I use the Daiwa Saltiga LD 35H for wrecking. 👍
Can you launch a trailer anywhere in Whitby thanks.
Hi John. Yes, there is a slipway for launching in the Harbour, run by North Yorkshire Council. Regards, Andy
Do you change the hook to trebles on the Hoki's
Hi Kevin. No, the hooks stay the same. I prefer the 6/0 Size hooks. The trebles will just cause masses of tangles. 👍
it may have been asked many times! but! what rods, length etc and reel do you use? the real looks like a Shimano Torium but not sure if that real is available in the nothern hemisphere?
Hi Kevin. The rod is a Century Excalibur Braid 20-40lb Class. This rod is no longer available and has been superseded by the Century Eliminator. The reel is a Daiwa 20 Saltiga LD 35. The LD 20 is also perfect for this type of fish and is just slightly smaller in size (with the same drag). Regards Andy
Bloody Hell Andy, I’ve just stumbled upon this on UA-cam and recognised you straight away. A bit of a change from the carp in the Racecourse. Hope you’re all well. Bob
