I think there is a kill switch or pyrofuse that you either need to replace or bypass to get it running, probably located very close to the battery, tends to go pop when the airbags deploy
I think they call it a BST Sensor (Battery Saftey sensor).
If it is the pyrofuse, the starter wont turn. Could be wrong…
Maybe just the fuel pump inertia breaker like a lot of cars have. You gotta reset it or no fuel pump.
Thinking the same
@@christophebulens3589 You are correct it kills all power
With the new BMWs, the car will crank over even if the ECU is not matched to the car, but it won't allow fuel injection or spark. So it could very well be that you have the ECUs mixed up. I think the key error is related to something else, it should not throw a key error, even if the wrong ECU is plugged in as the key is validated by the CAS (inside the Body Controller), and not by the ECU
He said the guy who owned it before sent him the one he took out. But you know. UA-cam car builds are a story some of the time. More so than a rebuild project.
Isn’t there a pyro fuse on it that cuts out the fuel pump at a crash. I mean all airbags did blow
There should be a pyro fuse that you have to replace. It prevents the car from starting and running when the front end was damaged. Mat Armstrong on YT rebuilt an M5 and talked about that
Good job! I highly recommend scanning the vehicle for codes, take note of them then clear them before trying to crank again. I doubt the battery is the issue considering it cranks strong. either way that battery will need replacing and once replaced you will need to have it registered to the vehicle. This car also may very well have a pyrofuse that will blow when involved in an accident that will need to be checked.
First thing I thought was bad pyro.
My first thought too... But when the pyro fuse is blown, does it allow to crank the engine?
@@ralphruiters2475 On a BMW the pyro fuse usually only turns off the fuel system
@@j.d.8593 Thanks for the answer. I learnt new knowledge because of you 👍🏻
@@ralphruiters2475 depends on the vehicle and how it's wired. Like another person stated in a comment BMW's shut off the fuel supply circuit when the pyrofuse blows.
Make sure to bleed the coolant and also if you added the mishimoto oil cooler, you’ll need 8qt of oil not 6.5
(I think he said there was two quarts still in the cooler & pipes)
He fitted a new cooler and feed pipes.
8 quarts? what the?
Most regular engines still hold a lot of undrained oil when an oil change is carried out. It’s probably better and safer to work with the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick when the car is parked on level ground.
Check the Fuel Pump relay and the Fuel Pump fuse. Also check your connection to the Crank position sensor and Cam position sensors. Those will not let it start if they are bad or unplugged.
There will be a fuel shut off switch that clicks out in a shunt. Find it and push the button back in.
Maybe also check fuses to see if a fuel pump fuse has gone and also check if the coils are working.
I would also clear all faults because its been dead for so long and many will be because of lack of current in the ECUs.. An old fault caused in the accident may be just hanging things up.
But you certainly got that front end spot on mate. Well done.
Vtune getting rich of this series 1 mill views coming soon
Check the basics: fuel and spark. Make sure you have fuel in the tank and make sure you have fuel at the rail. Then check for spark at the plugs.
Crash relay trips ,shits off gas and spark in MVA????
@@user-ht1xu4gv2u I thought it shut off all electrical so it wouldn’t even start.
It is always a good idea to check all of the fuses!
Yes.There's usually a trip (Inertial) sensor for the fuel pump, and the car does have rear damage too.Good call.@@user-ht1xu4gv2u
Could be a fuel shutoff needs reset or something like that . Love watching you and your brothers rebuilds
I would definitely scan the codes before trying to start the vehicle. Check all the fuses as well. Being a 2023, I highly doubt the battery is an issue at all. I would also send the oil to blackstone labs for an oil analysis, this way you know what to expect from that oil you’ve removed from the vehicle. I would also double check the required oil level with the Mishimoto oil cooler. Great work, you’re really knocking this out quickly😎👍🏽
That battery was still very low so needs charging or replacing. Worth plugging in a code reader, with so many of the cables not connected at the front, one of them might be stopping it start. I would recheck where you painted the wings in the engine bay to make sure earth connectors are all clean. Good luck mate.
Check if it has an inertia cut out, could have been activated with the fromtal impact. They used to be fitted in centre console .
Would it even crank if that was the issue?
@@danielburns7148 Yes BMWs with either profuse or inertia cut out will disable the fuel system. So car will still crank but worn start since fuel system has been cut off.
I think the fuel pump is in protection mode. You have phisically press the switch to start it or the fuse just like goonzquad supra?
That battery won’t charge when fully dead using a conventional charger. A specialist will dismantle the outside cover and be able to charge the internals after which it will be as good as new for you. Will save you a lot of dosh.
Check your rear quarter panels for any fuses back there..... With an accident this car had things probably popped. Great videos and passion.
Love this build. Double check that your motor mounts are OK. Those big motors usually break them from the inertia of a collision.
Great video as always, just do a lot of research, check electrical circuits around the battery area.👍👍👍😎😎😎
Try hooking up the ctek charger to the terminals under the hood. I couldn't see exactly how you had it connected, but all the computers that mount directly to the battery could be messing with it.
Great progress Ben! I am looking forward to seeing you take this one out for a test drive when you get it done!
If u have the correct dme (vin coded) for the vehicle (CAs, ews) try dme CAs re alignment. If u replaced the dme with a new one, it needs programming and coding with ews alignment.
Most cars from 2017 and onwards are equipped with a pyrofuse, it goes off whenever a car is involved in an accident and the airbags go off. When it goes off it cuts power to the whole car. It’s is a good safety feature because if something happens to engine components it will shut off immediately and will not cause any more damage to the engine. Try bypassing or replacing it and the car will have power again and hopefully the engine starts with no issues
Should check for any codes. Also, check to see if the fuel pump is working and if you have a spark. Could spray a bit of ether in the air intake tube and see if she kicks. Great build so far.
At least it turns over!! Does the fuel pump operate? I was surprised there wasn't a fusible link blown by the airbags. Awesome work!!! Makes me miss beating my brains out on cars, in the Body Shop...
Great Work mate.
There is a red battery terminal under the bonnet/hood on your passenger side. I drive a E92 BMW and was told the car has a battery regulator for jump starting the car to stop damage to car. You never jump start a BMW from the car battery. Love the car. Salvage Rebuild UK recently repaired a M4 competition.

quickly becoming my 3 favorite channels on YT. Keep going, guys.
Hey Ben, Happy New Year man. I think the paint looked fine. Seriously, it’s probably better than factory. I am so happy you were able to score the ECU’s. As far as not starting, perhaps some of the other fellas watching might have an idea. I know I’ve seen you replace a fuse in the trunk that had blown. At any rate I will be waiting for the next video to drop. So, I’ll see you then!
Still can't understand why this channel hasn't blown up yet.
Other rebuilders would milk three episodes out of what Ben does in one......
Great video keep up the good work bro.
With the wrong ecu plugged, you probably set IMMO codes, a good code reset will probably fix it
nah IMMO codes get verified at runtime (SBOOT), so a reset won't do anything.
As a question / comment. @2.54 on the video you attached an earth wire. However from what I can see you did not clean the paint off first!!?? Did you replace the pyro fuse? And a little tip for you.....when pouring fluids into a hole, wrap the outside of the hole with kitchen towel or similar. This catches all the spilled fluid. Keep going Ben and have faith as these things often turn out to be simple corrections. Have a great 2024 and greetings from the UK.
You need to vacuum fill the coolant systems on those, you will find it will over heat amd have massive air locks
Okay heres what to check first :
CPS, working and plugged in
Dme grounds
Pyro fuse
Key fob battery
Car in park or neutral
Brake light switch
Im sure you will figure it out soon 💪🏼
Looking good you dug deep into this one.. when you showed us the grounds in the new replaced area of strut tower I noticed that they are on fresh paint, maybe try too sand the areas where the grounds attach and put some dielectric greese on them also noticed you just slapped the battery cables on and didn't tighten them that might work 2 for it shutting off...good luck don't think it's blown or it wouldn't crank like that.
Make sure you clean the grounds on that right side. It may cause so problems. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Bridge pyro fuse terminals with jumpers, then battery pack on front engine terminals and rear battery. The car will start. If this works order new pyro fuse. Just did this on wrecked x3m
Wow Québec love Canada Merci 😮
Dear Veniamin (Ben),
First of all I want to wish you, your relatives, friends and all your subscribers a very Happy New Year in property but above all in a good health.
It’s really weird that your BMW M4 doesn’t want to start since with the 2022 EMU you have mounted secondly I saw without door and airbags indicating lights in the dash no strange indication mentioned. Perhaps by scanning the complete system it might learn you more. For me it’s more the clever that you already brought this wreck in the today’s condition and I’m positive that you’ll find the problem soon.
I look forward to your next vlog and send you love from the Netherlands
My old automotive instructor always said: "its faster to move something out of your way than work around it." Probably why I'm not intimidated by the 2nd gen 300ZX.
Check out the pyrofuse, in event of an accident it cuts fuel until you replace said part.
Check your pyro fuse vtuned. Also setup the brake caliper etc. And try again. Maybe it needs a brake input.
Great stuff dude thanks
Great video Ben! I hope it will start soon 😊
Absolut great job
Btw, Ben makes some high quality auto body repair Videos, Porsche scrap sellers are nothing compared to him
Good work man
V man you do Nice work ! ...
True professional. Used a iPhone as a flash light and no funnel to fill up his fluids. Unbelievable

Love the content! Thanks. Hearing your background music it has this extremely triggering nextel phone beep. I used to have one of those while I worked doing snow plowing. It would make that same exact noise at like 2am when my boss would beep us to get out and start our plowing routes. It's the stuff of my nightmares. Serious PTSD 😂😂
Pyrofuse needs replacement, battery needs replacement as well $1,400 from dealer (lithium), but there’s a method where you can take the battery cover off so that you can recharge. I’m almost 100% sure that’s the issue. Good luck
Another great video Ben ... No fluff, just great content. (BTW ... your beautiful BMW isn't starting because the fuel inertia switch got tripped and there should be a little red button to press to re-set it.) Good Luck
Long awaited video man😅.
We love your videos by the way ❤
Pyro fuse stopping it from starting ?
Cool nice rebuild 👍😎
Crank no start issues are fun!! Definitely look into A pyrofuse issue first.
pyrofuse would complete disconnect the battery power, duh that's what it for. but his engine crank over.. dummy
I don’t know if they have changed this with the g80 but on every bmw since the e46 the Juno location is under the hood . If you give the battery direct power it’s not modulated and it will blow modules throughout the car . So always jump from under the hood . Regarding it not starting possible pyro fuse ?
Usually on new vehicles the Engine ECU needs to be programmed to the vehicle specifically. Other ECUs need the engine module to able start.
Inertia switch is probably tripped. I believe it cuts fuel.
Great video as always.
Great job Ben. Surprised by complexity and amount of parts that make up the front of this BMW. Modern cars are a pain when it comes to tracking down electronics gremlins. Keep at it and I have confidence you will find the solution.
Fuel pump relay might be deactivated as safety measure during the accident. Check if it has a resettable button or maybe needs replacing.
check the pyrofuse prob blown when it crashed, usually cuts out the fuel pump
Check the fuel fuse make sure your getting power at the pump
On mine the key is linked to the comfort control unit, not the ECU. Now that the car is seeing the key try changing the ECU again for the other one.
Sounds like your map sensor( intake) OR it not getting gas, it has enough battery power to crank already
Ben if you have dead battery, put another battery that have power in it to side of orginal battery. That way the smartcharger keep it charging and you don't have to push it over n' over again for charge.
Greating from FINLAND🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
In my wife’s mini cooper S countryman (BMW Group) I had a similar issue when her battery died, the engine will not charge on a battery booster like yours. the engine will turn and not fire. I ended up buying a new battery and the car started perfectly. Now, when you place anew battery, you have to go to dealership to get the new battery registered to your car and get the error codes cleared
v it will start! maybe im old school but this computer shit with new cars........really dont khow where your patience comes from !!!!
Great Work 👍👍We have a M4 they are a fantastic car ❤️❤️Very expensive but great to drive 👍👍
Check crash killswitch as recommended below bur start with the fuses, i dont hear the fuel pump priming... GL
Gaps are perfect!
Holy crap dude , every time you cut back in with "check it out guy's" it makes me jump because i have my ear buds in and it's loud when you first start talking again then you fade into normal volume ! 😲😉👍
Nice to see you put all the pushpins back. Every time I've had body work done, fasteners disappear.
I think your airbag deployment engine shutdown is still active in restraint/airbag module. That stops engine running but doesn't disable starter.
Kid is a pro love
The work but when loosening rack bolts or any never pull towards your face always push to loosen if possible!!!
some vehicles have a emergency full disconnect that turns off the fuel pump. i know my explore has one of them in the passenger front panel under the dashboard
On older models it was the EWS system. Turns over no spark or fuel. Single module that would sync (EWS II) with the DME. Not sure on the newest but i would assume it still acts similar in that the EWS module (or what it's called now) would just work when the correct DME was detected. I believe the modules trade some kind of key pairs similar to encryption. Could be neither DME was from the car. One other possibility is a fuel cutoff but when the firemen loaded my 328 with the front end wiped off they asked me to turn it of, somehow it was still running.
I agree. There is a kill switch that deploys upon impact. Find that and maybe you'll find the problem.I think it shuts off the fuel pump.
O E Diamond Cut wheels would be sick!
A true craftsman at work a lot better then the two body filling bro on a other channel keep up the good work you will do good in this world be proud of yourself
Come on tune work some of your magic and get her running 😎👍🏾
Check for codes, fuel pump shut off,etc.. The comfort access system is what controls the locking, unlocking, key recognition, so you still could have put the wrong ecu box in it. Spray a little ether through the turbo to see if it's fuel or not as well. With BMW's the stars have to align to crank.
nice work
Can’t wait for the next video
Did you already reset the fuel pump inertia switch designed to trip and cut fuel in an accident?
There's a chance that the car won't let u start & drive cos all the airbags hav deployed. I how u get this fixed soon, looking 4ward 2 watching u do the rest of the bodywork.
Check your pyro fuse it usually blows when the bags deploy and also on most foreign cars
Happy NEW YEAR Paul, greetings from Guayaquil Ecuador 9:15 pm Friday 5 january 2024.
You need program the ecu because the antitheft system is activated for the new ecm
on bmw if you are getting a crank no start you need to do whats called a CAS-DME Alignment. This is what it was called on the older cars with the cas immobilizer system. the new ones have FEM/BDC modules which possibly need the same thing. it lets it crank but doesnt open the injectors. Scan it and if theres EWS manipulation or DME codes then do this. You can do this with most launch or autel scanners or ISTA
Also, on some bmw if the dme is inncorrect it will let the car turn over too but wont let it start. A DME has an "ISN" code which is basically like a serial number and this has to match to the BDC. if it doesnt match you will get a code in the DME saying incorrect vin or something like that. which means all you need to do is either get the DME Virginized. Or get the DME programmed to the BDC
You need to code the modules to the new ECU! The anti-theft is not deactivating and it's not sending fuel/spark to motor
tnx for the video
I love seeing you wear your ppe
You make it look So Easy.
Does it need the pyro fuse replaced
Been waiting bro dem you dorp the bomb I love this car too 2023 m4 large up
What did Yuri do to your e30 or do I dare not ask LOL. You doing an awesome job with this M4, looking forward to the next installment mate!. Keep Orange crushing it!
