On the new engine, unless the original crank was destroyed, odds are it's stock. The stock cobra cranks are forged and pretty stout. Good for huge power 1k +. Most engine builds utilize a stock cobra crank. Looking forward to seeing it run!
Want to touch base on the part where you heated the driveshaft bolts. You can heat the threads inside, such as header/manifold bolts, or drive shaft bolts by heating the bolt head cherry red, let it cool (during cooling it transfers the heat to the threads off the bolt and into the part therefore separating the bolt from the part) and after about 3-5 minutes the bolt 99% of the time come out with ease. Oxy/acetylene is usually the ideal tool for that. Give it a try! Great show!
SPS bolts were used from le factory. Looks like a factory crank with that undercut radius on the rod journal, you don't see that too often on aftermarket cranks, they usually go with a fillet of some flavor. Be interesting to know if the rod bolts are 8740 or 2000 material. Rod bearings are a race series Clevite, pretty good.
Factory crank is a Kellogg forged unit. All aftermarket forged 4.6 cranks I know of all have counterweights just the same (Eagle, Manley, Scat) I've never seen a knife edge counter weight on a 4.6 crank. Can see in the video it has 8740 bolts (which is plenty strong, however I don't know why anyone wouldn't opt for the 2000 upgrade on a forged rod...)
Easiest way I found to check the crank without looking for the KC stamp on the first counterweight is to see if it has counterweights in the center. The factory forged cranks had counterweights but the cast ones didn’t. I believe the Manley, eagle, etc forged options as well all don’t have counterweights on the center.
I have a box full of those blue bushings on your exhaust. They have many uses, they are high temperature resistant bushings and can be used in the exhaust system as well as other locations that need to be vibration damped.
Something you may want to look into, depending on your goals; the 96-99 Cobra used an aluminum block made by Teksid in Italy. Some early 01s had a Teksid block also, but most of them had the WAP block, made in Canada. Both are fine for the majority of mild to moderate street/strip builds, but the Teksid is known to be superior for really high horsepower builds.

Yes another video! Alex, please make a follow-up video of the supercharged C63. Maybe some pulls and some performance figures like acceleration times, etc.
Make sure you get an aftermarket high speed bearing for the supercharger idler pulley. I replaced mine a few times before going aftermarket and never had a problem again. And this was 18 years ago. I believe I bought a skf high speed bearing.
That's a hard decision, but I think I would rather have an LS1 F-body. Keep up the great videos, Alex. You're definitely a big part of my Saturday mornings.
I've had 2 new edge Mustangs (they were only GTs though) and I got rid of my 03 GT for my LS1 fbody. Even with mods my 03 GT wasn't doing it for me. Unless you do forced induction the 2v 4.6 isn't all that great and I just prefer the fbody.
@@FWDSUXARSEyou don't have to do forced induction to make a decent quick car out of a 2v you just gotta know what to do to it. It's 281 cubic inches you're comparing it to something with 346 cubes. The 4v is a diff animal they can make 380 wheel with just fbo and cams with a stock bottom end. You can make close to 350 wheel with a 2v with trickflow heads cam and intake all the supporting mods and bolt ons. That isn't bad for an na 2v and with the right setup can Def move for what it is. People just don't know how to make more power. The fbodys are junk piles everywhere other than the motor and trans.
@@midnight347 Like I said even with all the mods you mentioned my 03 wasn't doing it for me. My LS1 is making more with similar mods, fits into tighter engine bays due to its simple design which makes the dimensions smaller than the 4.6L and it's a lighter engine. Anything outside of interior quality is easily fixed on the fbody thanks to the huge aftermarket.
Cool build Alex. I am looking forward to it. I've had two of those engines and let them both go. While I'm typically a Ford guy, I would have to go with the LS1 Firebird. Have a great day Man!
I would stick some valves in the old heads and if needed, manually polish the valve seats, no need to go to a machine shop! The old heads seem to be much more tuned and probably tuned towards the supercharger you have! Bottom end looks amazing on the new one, so best of both worlds!
Manually polish the valve seats? Did I just watch the same video? Those things are roached, repairable most likely yes, but will need new valves, seats and guides at an absolute minimum
@@danieledwards1081 it will need new valves that can be manually grinded to the existing seats. I just said this because the heads looked very very nice, despite the carnage of the valves. My only concern would be the seats, yes, some of them are rusty and could be a pain...
@@cristianosantos9588 there's no way those seats will not need replacing, on top of that, you get what you put in with a valve job, better off just getting the whole lot refreshed properly
Factory heads are plenty sufficient. The old heads I'd throw in the scrap bin. Seeing those valves I can only imagine the seat is no longer. The block is probably scrap, I don't know if a Teksid is worth putting new sleeves in. If it has factory rods they are junk (considering 99/01 Cobra's didn't have forged pistons or rods, only the crank), the crank MIGHT be the only thing worth anything but there was quite a bit of water in the crankcase and 20 years sitting.... IF the original damage isn't done to the crank.
@@commonsenseisdeadin2024dude the teksid is the baddest aluminum block Ford ever put into anything factory it's absolutely worth saving as are the heads. They came with factory cranks the factory rods and pistons are the only things that aren't way way better than what was on gt back then and the only things that aren't comparable or better than what terminators had. They didn't make aftermarket 4v heads the heads are always worth saving.

99 Cobras all had the same bumper as the GTs from the factory. Starting in 2001, the Cobra had its own unique rear bumper. Edit to add: those calipers are made by PBR, and say Cobra from the factory. They’re one of a few popular upgrades for GTs, as they’re plenty stout for a New Edge Mustang.
@@LegitStreetCarswait what? I'm going to assume Alex made a boo boo on his comment here. I'm a Ford guy but the WS6 will spank this Cobra through and through!
18:38 you can re-use the old front timing cover - you will need to for the vortech blower brackets you have to fit. The front timing cover was revised for a new belt routing and tensioner on the ‘01 cars. This is the FEAD or front end accessory drive in Ford-speak. The water pump pulley is different because the pumps are different - the 01 motor has a longer pump snout and a more dished pulley. Can use either pump style with the correct pulley. They called these Modulars for a reason!
Funny growing up I never liked the fox body, always thought they looked like a K car. But now that I'm older I do appreciate them. Maybe it's because they crush at the drag strip. I find myself appreciating almost any car these days haha
I really appreciate your attention to detail and how you bring life to Automotive legends and odd engineering concepts. Quality content! It's impossible to choose a favorite build or episode. Thank you.
I did a little research on that part # on the camshaft. The number on that camshaft comes back to the cams in the 03-04 terminator cobra which makes perfect sense if that engine was built for boost.
Yesterday after the AMG video I was going to comment and ask about the Red Cobra. I’m excited about this build! I’m currently rebuilding my 96 Mustang GT. It was my first car drive it daily for years parked it for a few years and now I’m able to upgrade and fix!
99s used stock mustang bumper, after the 2000 pause they went back to the Cobra script. Vortech got rid of the oil line on the V3 which were self oiled.
It's like being a kid and looking forward to Saturday cartoons, only way better with more horsepower! We just started uploading on Fridays, hopefully our videos add to people weekend enjoyment 🤘
Loved that you finally got the chance to start working on the cobra, lucky with the replacement engine too, I’m so happy for you, I can’t wait to hear it run! 😊
“Spring little cobra getting ready to strike…..” sorry but when you were pushing that in to the shop that song came to me and stuck through the whole episode!😀😀🤔👍
Torn on the choice of the F-body or the Cobra. I think I would go WS6 T-Top Trans Am in the final year with 6-speed. Second choice would be ‘03 Cobra convertible for the weekend cruising.
You sure can switch the cover and balancer 👍 and just a tip when looking at bearings mains check the lower bearing and rods check the upper bearing gives a better idea of its life thats where the pressure is when it fires
Once again, an awesome and entertaining video. Some guys would put a washer in the end of the pipe to close the opening to a smaller size so that the engine heated up even faster. I wouldn’t even think about it but that is the third time I’ve seen that and when I asked the first guy, that’s what he told me. Great video Alex. Thank you.

Don't go with that old dinosaur kb use a department of boost manifold and run a gen3r 2650 tvs that they make for terminator cobras. Thank me later. It will make the same or more power and way more torque and it will make it 100x more consistently. Don't be fooled by the "liquid cooled" mumbo jumbo the gen3r annihilates it every day of the week and twice on Sunday. It is alot more modem but it's just a 2.65.

@@LegitStreetCars awesome!
In the first minute when you push the Cobra in the shop and the TA and the Cobar are nose to nose is an AMAZING Home Screen!!!
Alex you genuinely inspire me to love cars more im very thankful and keep making more content
I love Alex's channel I watch every time a new one pops up. He completes his projects and that's the #1 that keeps me coming back!
Make sure you get an aftermarket high speed bearing for the supercharger idler pulley. I replaced mine a few times before going aftermarket and never had a problem again. And this was 18 years ago. I believe I bought a skf high speed bearing.
Base on the number at 30:45 mark, the YL7E-6A270-AB cam is a stock 03/04 Cobra intake for the right side of the engine.
What about the engraved number below it? I'm guessing they are regrinds.
Them things are junk. They're also butt ugly most of the time lol.
@@FWDSUXARSE Then just say you like the F body more period. It's ok to enjoy what you like.
legit street cars is becoming my favourite automotive channel on UA-cam. keep it up, already looking forward to the next video. love from the UK!!!!
Thanks brother!
Not much of a Ford fan but enjoy watching you work on cars. Would love to have a garage like you.
Your videos never get old to me. Been watching you since the start and they are amazing. Great work Alex!!
Cool build Alex. I am looking forward to it. I've had two of those engines and let them both go.
While I'm typically a Ford guy, I would have to go with the LS1 Firebird. Have a great day Man!
Thanks Paul, you too!
99 SVT cobra for me. That was my dream car back in high school. Love it. So excited for this.
I thoroughly enjoy your channel. I love seeing performance car rebuilds.
Forgot you uploaded on Saturdays and was so pleasantly surprised to see an upload from LSC! Makes my weekend so much better! Thanks Alex for the content as always!
Haha I always wait for Saturdays! We just started a channel and upload every Friday. Hope to be as cool as Alex's channel one day... One day, haha
This sooo makes me want to pick up another Mustang! Looks like another great series Alex!!
You're one of my absolute favorite automotive YTers. Really enjoy your vids. Keep it up!
Dude, by this point we just love YOU!!! the car or brand you're working on matters not!
Thanks for another superb and FUN video. Wish you were in Florida because I'd hang out at your shop and LEARN as much as I could while helping you free of charge. The best Car channel on UA-cam!
The 96-98 also had its own unique rear not just 2001 and up. 94-95 and 99 just said MUSTANG for whatever reason.
@@midnight347 that’s correct. I was speaking about the 99-04 cars specifically
Thank you man for coming back to this ❤️ I love when cars don’t go unforgotten
LS F-Body all day long, the WS6 is still an amazing looking beast. I am NOT a Ford guy, but I do enjoy watching you work!
One thing that the fbody can benefit from is the Ford 8.8 rear end. When my ten bolt dies that's what's replacing it.
Great video. My bone stock 99 Cobra has 33K miles on it and she always brings a smile to my face when I drive it.
This was an "I Do Cars" engine teardown episode :)
I wanted him to say “Malice in the combustion palace” when he found the broken valves😢
Finally cobra content! Since first cobra appearance I was patiently waiting! The day has come! Can't wait to see it rolling
I’d definitely go cobra over a Pontiac. Great video!
Me too!
Pontiac!
@@michaelm3381 you enjoy your Pontiac bud. 👍🏾
@@gabesreef I sure do.
@@LegitStreetCarswait what?
I'm going to assume Alex made a boo boo on his comment here.
I'm a Ford guy but the WS6 will spank this Cobra through and through!
I finally got a chance to check out the latest episode and it’s finally the Cobra! Immediate thumbs up. Can’t wait to see this episode!
Happy New Year. I am certainly looking forward to another fun and informative year of great car content and dad jokes.
Funny growing up I never liked the fox body, always thought they looked like a K car. But now that I'm older I do appreciate them. Maybe it's because they crush at the drag strip. I find myself appreciating almost any car these days haha
As a mustang guy, I have been waiting for this video for soooooo long. Finally!!!!
I really appreciate your attention to detail and how you bring life to Automotive legends and odd engineering concepts. Quality content! It's impossible to choose a favorite build or episode. Thank you.
'01 Cobra for me thanks!!! Love the builds can't wait to see that Cobra driving again!
Finally ive been waiting for the rebuild video of this car ,thanks for the content all you guy have a great new years
props to the product placement. gotta appreciate the time he went into for the lighting and camera angles.
Finally some blue oval content! Excited for the next video on the Cobra.
99s used stock mustang bumper, after the 2000 pause they went back to the Cobra script. Vortech got rid of the oil line on the V3 which were self oiled.
Loved the show! Look forward to it each Saturday. I MISS it being a hour long though.
Alex I enjoy watching your channel, your enthusiasms keeps me coming back for more.
Torn on the choice of the F-body or the Cobra. I think I would go WS6 T-Top Trans Am in the final year with 6-speed. Second choice would be ‘03 Cobra convertible for the weekend cruising.
Finally Alex I’ve wanted you to fix this car and tell it’s story . Thank you brother!!!
you should do a colab with Jim's Automotive Machine Shop, that original motor should get some love :)
Thank you.
Great video!!! You should mount a winch somewhere in line with the garage door to make it easier to drag cars in the shop!
YAY! MUSTANG COBRA CONTENT! 🥳🎉 Alex, you can drink like 4oz of antifreeze before live failure... So enjoy🥴 those subframe nuts are supposed to have a tab on them that holds them in place for loosening or tightening. Man, I'm geekin out over that engine teardown🥴💪🏆
cobra is diffrent thanks ,i appreciate your effort .Your engine detail stuff is at a level others do not show ,its great to watch.
Thanks Shane. Appreciate that
@@LegitStreetCarshey can I buy the old engine from you ? I have a 69 Mach 1 mustang I would like to put it In

Hoping that motor turns out to be better than expected! Hoping for the best! As Always, May God Bless you and yours! 😇
When I was in 5th grade my dad's friend took me for a ride in his new 99 cobra. It was my first time in a fast ish car. I've always loved them.
There are some awesome cars on this channel, but I've been looking forward to more content on this SVT Cobra - this car is such a vibe! Can't wait for the next video 😊
SVT Cobra all the way. I’m in the process of building a 2002 Mustang GT 2V. Stroked to 5.0. Forged everything, arp head studs trick flow heads from Modular Head Shop. Kenne bell 2.8LC supercharger. Hoping for 750 - 800 whp. Good luck with the cobra. Love the vids!
I'm a Ford guy Alex, Cobra for me. Thanks for the update on the delay to the SVT Lightning. I have the 5.4 in my Fairmont here in Australia, an unreliable bucket of bolts.
My guy tried to put out a fire with... Yep, more fire. Always fun watching your content!
Man I always love your intros. They get me so hyped to watch the video!
Man i was waiting for this video! Those original heads looked heavily ported! Thing must have been a monster in its day! Lets gooo
Very cool and yes I need more SVT content. I'm going to watch the previous video. I'm excited and to answer your question, I'd like to have both a Cobra SVT and your W6 Trans AM!
LS F Body Trans Am, but I like when guys and girls bring old cars back to life. Great video
Alex, looking good. Use the timing cover from the original engine and also highly recommend going with the 4v cooling mod. Always has good luck with UPR.
Nice Alex glad your working on this cobra! Can’t wait to hear it start up!! Wow the mess you found that’s crazy. The carnage on this old engine is insane. Thanks for update Alex really enjoyed it! Love cobras! Cobra definitely but love all sports cars!
Mustangs all the way! I have a 96 Mystic Cobra that I completely restored in the engine compartment. To 90% stock. I did make some titanium fittings and studs for the stock exhaust manifolds. (I hate rust !) anyways I respect your firebird , but I’ll take cobras all the time ! Thank you for your content !
I enjoy the banter. You are a genuine car guy. Answer to questions - Yes to both
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!! AAAHHH!!!! As a New Edge owner, this gives me liiifffeee.
I’m happy to see you finally getting around to the cobra.
SVT all the way. Love the Cobra, had a 98 Cobra back in the day and would love the Lightning (Fast and Furious made me love it)
This is by far my favorite type of video and builds you guys produce! This is so sick! And it reminds me of the old Saturday morning car shows I watched as a kid. Only difference is you are way more entertaining and informative. The only complaint I have about your channel is only 1 episode per week. Haha Great job Alex, you're killing it! Can't wait for the next episode.
OMG FINALLY! Been waiting for this build for the longest.
Super excited to see you start on the Cobra project! I know you're going to make it probably even faster than it was back in 1999! I have always wanted a Cobra usually I like the 2003-2004 facelifted models with the factory supercharger or upgrades but these were good as well especially if they had a blower installed factory no blower. I honestly appreciate the content you put out it always makes my day on Saturdays! Hope you have a great rest of your weekend and I can't wait to finish watching the rest of this build cheers 🥂 Alex!
Another great video Alex!
Hopefully you’ll give that exterior a lil love too….cant wait for next week!
Cobra for sure I have a 03 newedge gt and I love the look and sound of thease I wish mine was a cobra but o well
Always look after your back! I'm only 65 but my lower back is shot, I never did any damage to it, but it is just worn out. YOU ONLY GET ONE BACK!
Wow Great job!!!! I’ve been looking forward to this for a while!!! Alex you and Max knock it out of the park with your content!! You actually go into detail on what you are doing with throughout the entire Video!!! You guys are the best!!
Yay I’ve been waiting for this one to come up. So excited to see it come back to life. Great job guys!
Good stuff as always brother keep them coming.
Great video Alex ! Always happy to see your videos. Keep doing stuff like this, your are the best. 🎉🎉🎉
Thankful for the amazing video, was just hoping for a long one.
