    Those are tough Sabal minor palms. Beautiful to see them growing in their natural habitat. Most folks are unaware of native palms in Oklahoma. I have a nice one in my garden that is from Oklahoma

    Great video and so cool to see them in the wild. They are native across the Southeast and are so hardy, there are lots of big ones here in Washington, D.C. Love them!

    I have one in my yard for years in Virginia! They are tough, but very very slow growing.

    Incredible that these are in Oklahoma. I think I remember these are also in a micro-climate at the base of a cliff that blocks northern winter winds and also benefits them from the heat release of the rocks at night. That probably really helps in harsh winters. I also remember reading that originally Sabal minors once went up the Mississippi river banks all the way to the boot heel of Missouri-benefiting from the heat release from the river at night in winter. Most of those pockets, if not all, where cleared by farmers and no longer exist in situ. There is still a pocket of them in the Dallas area by a powerplant in a similar micro-climate to these.

      Where did you read that about them going up to the Missouri boot heel? I have seen that mentioned online before years ago but I want to find a source for it. If that is true it wouldn’t be surprising considering the Missouri boot heel is zone 7a and 7b and is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain, swampy and hot.

      SE Oklahoma is part of the southern coastal plain. It's no different than northern Louisiana. This isn't an isolated area. It's just the beginning of that geological region. Southeastern Oklahoma doesn't typically get harsh winters like the central and norther portions of the state. Again, it's part of the southern coastal plain and shares the same climate you would find in Louisiana or Mississippi.

    I heard these palms are also native to an extreme southeastern part of Virginia as well, also the Virginia side of the Great Dismal Swamp.

    I transplanted a few of these from the bottoms of the Saline River in southeast Arkansas on the Bradley/Drew County line east of Warren back in 2002. I brought them north to my parent's house near Memphis, planted them...now they are HUGE. They've survived several winters with near zero temps, in particular the winter of 2009-2010. Beautiful palms and very cold hardy!

    Yes, the Sabal minor 'McCurtain' will even grow in Ohio. I have one that I planted in 2008. I just stuck it in the ground. I don't mulch or try to baby it in any. way. (Don't call palm welfare on me) It has been through a couple very bad winter's with no effect. There was also a couple milder winter's where the fronds turned brown but put up 3 new fronds as usual. It has bloomed, but now at age 11 has finally set some seed. The best bet for growing up North.

    I am growing a few of these in North Georgia. Completely hardy here. Oldest one flowered and made seed first time this year.

    can anyone tell me what part the year they germinate in their natural habitat as the seeds ripen mid to late October. Do they fall to the ground and germinate in spring?

    • @pipsmith5767
      @pipsmith5767 5 років тому

      @@SouthernCatfishKing thanks very much for the response-I bet they fall from last years seed pods and germinate the following year. I did check the monthly average temperature at mid to late October and its between 23 degrees centigrade and 10 degrees centigrade, November is cooler. I don't live there so may be wrong. Maybe this ecotype has got greater seed viability. I am trying to germinate mine in an unheated greenhouse but so far a rubbish summer.
