I’ve had my VW ID.4 for 7 months now and love it. I drive basically in the suburbs and right now the car is at 88% full with an est. range of 311 miles. Not bad. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice 5 passenger CUV with a reasonable price.. Everything works like it should with a quiet and comfortable ride. Build quality is excellent. No problems merging onto highways or zipping into open spaces in suburban driving.
At ideal conditions especially regarding ambient temperature which average consumer will experience very rarely. Also the average consumer will not like to drive without use of HVAC. There is a video of range test at i think 20F at 70mph and the best range was 160 miles.
I understand your point completely. I have to say though, I literally woke up that morning and decided to film the video without any planning in terms of weather or conditions. It just happened to be what it was. I didn't use the HVAC because I didn't need to use it. I do think it would be good to show consumers what it would be like to drive it with the heater will, so I will follow up with that. Thanks for watching!
I did 195 miles from 100% I drove with heated seats on and low heat for the first 100 miles around 70mph then had to turn all heat off and drove 65mph for the remainder of the trip. It was around 35 degrees Fahrenheit with a slight head wind. We arrived with 5miles remaining. Ours is the AWD
Yeah, absolutely. I was curious what it could do at "typical" highway speeds. I'd like to do a follow up range test in the cold. That is, if it ever gets cold here! 😂
🤔 I have a 2022 model (RWD) and just did 640 miles and I averaged 3.6 mi/kWh with the AC set at 73 degrees. However, my speed did range from 55-70 mph from NC to MA.
Thanks for the video. I wonder what kind of consumption you get if "B-mode" is selected? My wife and I are thinking about either a RWD or AWD ID.4 or Hyundai or Kia EV in those configurations. Not as easy decision.
"B" mode was on the entire time. When you are driving with adaptive cruise control and highway speeds, it probably doesn't play much of a factor. That's going to be more helpful in city driving. :)
@@robmiranda7120 when you brake or slow down it regenerates kinetic energy back to electric energy to charge the battery. When you are rolling steady state on the highway the energy in the battery is being used to keep the car moving. B mode is a good idea for mixed driving though.
Has anyone done an ev range test simulating a family trip ? Multiple people and luggage weight? That's a pretty important test, not everyone road trips alone and that will definitely affect the range correct?
It depends on the total weight but even so, the most important factor is the aerodynamics of the car. Even if you added say 800 pounds of people and stuff outside of the driver, the range hit isn't going to be that large. A worse outcome would be to put roof racks and a small container on the top of the car. That would hurt more range than the weight inside the car.
@@evhelphub I hope you're right lol, I've only had the ID4 for a week and I'm going on a road trip to Orlando from Miami. Four people all with luggage. Crossing my fingers
We did 2 road trips on our AWD Pro with my wife and our 2 kids and AC on all the time. And trunk full of 3 luggages and bags of toys, etc. 1st trip is LA, California to Yosemite National Park. We charged once in LA to 99%. 2nd charge in Fresno. 3rd charge in Oakhurst 99%. Got to Yosemite Village with 76%. We drove around for the day and headed back to Oakhurst and home. Going back home, our range increased to 300 because it was mostly downhill. 2nd trip was LA to Sedona, AZ. Left home with 70%. Made it to Indio, CA to charge to 96%. Then to Quartzsite, AZ to charge to 90%. Then to Phoenix to charge to 90% and got to Sedona with I think 68%. We probably could have charged it to 80% each stop, but we usually like to sit in our car parked with the AC on for an hour because one or both of our kids would be taking a nap. Coming from owning a Prius and Clarity, the ID4 is the only car in my life that made me say without thinking when I 1st saw it in person, "Wow. This is a nice car." It's worth every penny. Now, our road trips are way more fun. Definitely love how the car's EV motor sounds like a quiet, growling, jet engine. The AWD is rated for 255 miles and living in the LA mountains, I can say it with AC on all the time, we get about 220 miles and if I go easy on the gas pedal, I could do 240 miles. Driving on the freeway at 65mph does increase our range to 270 - 300 miles.
Yeah I have a Jetta TDI that I’m seriously thinking of trading for the ID4. I’m really wondering what it’s going to cost me to charge at home. So much to learn and figure out.
A lot of it depends on where you live. In our state, electricity is pretty cheap and we've noticed almost no real additional increase in our bill. We charge at home every night. Even if you live in a state like California where electricity is crazy high and you charge in off peak hours, you are probably looking at 3 full charges a month worth of electricity if your commute is 30 miles roundtrip. That's somewhere between $50-70. Way better than $4.50 per gallon of gas. :)
I have a Tesla model 3, but considered the ID4. Not exact 1:1, but here in NJ my electric is about $.13/kwh. I drive about 15k per year. So far my electric bill went up about $65 or so. I have lower rates after 8pm, so I time my charging to start overnight when its cheaper. The charge stats for the past 30 days claim $67 worth of electric vs $229 of gas. I had a TDI as well (2 cars ago) and it was a great car. Electric is a whole different animal. I would never go back to ICE or diesel. Good luck and welcome to the EV world.
I didn't use the AC. The travel assist likely uses some battery, but given the outcome I highly doubt it was more than a percent of two. If you do use the HVAC it will drain the battery but of course it is much worse with the heater on. :)
It will be less by at least 35% in cold weather like 5c. That is the problems with most EVs at present. ID4 is really bad if you combine cold weather and short commute.
Yeah, most EVs are terrible in the winter climates, which I think is a large sticking point for many right now. You practically need a 300 mile range+ if you do more than just a daily commute and you can't charge at home every night. Hopefully as better tech improves, this goes away soon!
According to my experience, the ID.5 77 kWh RWD 2023 consumed 17 kWh/100 km at a temperature of 10-20 degrees celsius. When the temperature dropped to -25 degrees celsius, the consumption was 25 kWh/100 km. The car has a heat pump and I used it to preheat the car, so it increased the total consumption. I am surprised that consumption remained so moderate.
