  • "Functional" exercises are those that engage multiple muscle groups, typically the whole body, to achieve a movement that strengthens the brain-muscle neural pathways. The movements are usually similar to those that are done as part as normal living. The benefit is more responsive muscle reflexes and efficient muscle fiber firing that improves strength, coordination and posture. You'll find it easier to do things like getting out of your car, standing up from a seated position, and movements such as bending and squatting repetitively, which quickly fatigues most people.
