    Depending on where these guys are, wouldn't what they're doing be considered illegal? Like, they're essentially releasing non-native fish, amphibians, and reptiles into the wild. Sure, their intention is to catch them, but what if they don't or can't? I know red eared sliders and goldfish can be hella invasive and really mess up ecosystems. I know laws aren't the same everywhere, but I'm curious what could be done legally to them.

    • @nyamithewolf5720
      @nyamithewolf5720 2 роки тому +72

      It is illegal, due to the fact that releasing a non native animal into a ecosystem can upset the balance.

      Well. It's more complicated than that. Lots of country disregard fish's rights. And some don't even have any kind of animal rights (That's often where those kind of videos came from)
      On the ecosystem aspect. I don't know enough to say. Though it would totally be illegal in most country, maybe all, idk if it'll be applied seriously everywhere.

      @@Hadeshy and even in countries where it is taken seriously it is difficult to prove they were the ones who released the fish. A video showing them “catching” them isn’t enough proof because they can argue that they found the fish there after someone else released them

    Fun facts [not!] about lake Xochimilco:
    - Was used as a dumpsite for the rubble from the 85's Mexico City earthquake.
    - There are lots of irregular settlements that throw their waste directly into the lake.
    - This site is famous for its flower cultivation [and some veggies], so they use a lot of pesticides that went directly to the lake.
    - Some of the Mexico city sewage that is poorly treated is dumped into the lake too.
    - In 1890ish was introduced water lily cause; "pretty flower looks cool". Now is a plague that damages the ecosystem.
    - SOME STUPID POLITICIANS THAT STILL ARE IN IMPORTANT POSITIONS INTRODUCED MF CARP AND TILAPIA TO CLEAR THE WATER LILY AND ALGO TO GIVE PEOPLE SOMETHING TO FISH. The locals hate those fishes cause they are not tasty, they are small and they do not sell well and... THEY ATE EVERYTHING, INCLUDING AXOLOTL EGGS AND JUVENILES. There are approximately 900 tons of undesirable fish living in the lake.
    - Scientific studies have pointed out all the problems on time, but people in power simply don't care. They just want poor people's votes. That is why settlements and cultivation sites are not regulated.
    - But no worries, we have now a 50 pesos bill with a cute little axolotl on it, that will do it for the little guys!
    And... yeah. The lake is an ecological disaster because politics take decisions with their asses.

    Everyone go to videos with fake axolotl stuff say to them they can’t be caught in wild and that they live here, Lake Xochimilco
    The axolotl is native only to Lake Xochimilco in the Valley of Mexico, as well as the canals and waterways of Mexico City. Because they're neotenic, their habitat reflects this: a high-altitude body of water. This is unique to axolotls, with other salamanders having a much wider distribution, also I only know this stuff because I used to live there and have a pet axolotl

    I understand why you wouldn't want to own glow fish because they're genetically modified, but literally every other animal is genetically modified that we have, whether or not its through a syringe or inbreeding like crazy, the gold fish in your tank don't look like carp anymore for a reason...

    • @hailyjohnson407
      @hailyjohnson407 2 роки тому +2

      There's a difference between genetic modification and selective breeding though. Like they literally added DNA from a different animal to the glow fish to make it glow. They didn't just breed fish until they glowed

    • @JuMiKu
      @JuMiKu 2 роки тому

      @Haily Johnson It doesn't hurt the fish, due to this very specific form of "breeding", there won't be side effects, due to having to do selective breeding for just one trait, they are very pretty and if released they are released they will likely die within the first generation.
      Compare this to normal breeding, where the animals do very often suffer from the trait itself and there is always side effects, when breeding, because you don't select for health, but short heads and so on, mostly disregarding other traits to a degree (I'm kind of exaggerating. Good breeders will still keep health in mind, but there will always be "that guy".).
      Genetic engineering is the breeding of the future, where we can actually completely stop making pets suffer. We can make it so they are unable to reproduce without human assistance, which will be a blessing on nature.
      Also, the process used is just as natural if not moreso than selective breeding. They found this happening in nature. You won't find selective breeding in nature, where there is pressure to lose your snout (for instance) and become unable to give birth without cesarean (French Bulldogs).

    • @hailyjohnson407
      @hailyjohnson407 2 роки тому

      @@JuMiKu I would hope it doesn't hurt the fish. I will admit that although I have an idea of how the process works, I know very little about how it affects the health of the animal that is genetically modified. I'm personally kind of uncomfortable with that. But I agree that selective breeding can be very harmful too. Bulldogs and pugs have horrible health conditions, and it's really sad. I think it can be done with care though, and only breeding healthy animals (who have had genetic testing to make sure they aren't passing on serious health issues) together for a specific trait. This bothers me less than literally altering DNA. But if it doesn't hurt them, I'm less bothered by altering DNA than I am about harmful selective breeding, if that makes sense. I'm not a fan of it, but I prefer healthy selective breeding first, but I also hate harmful selective breeding such as how bulldogs can barely breathe and have to give birth via cesarean

    • @JuMiKu
      @JuMiKu 2 роки тому +2

      @@hailyjohnson407 I'm not trying to be mean, but I don't think you understand any of this as well as you think you do.
      Selective breeding is inherently more harmful than precise and careful genetic modification, especially for the individual. The DNA is changed in both cases. Hell, the DNA always changes, even if you just let nature take its course.
      I'll try to explain very shortly. If you do selective breeding, you basically put two animals together and hope for the best. You go on breeding those, who fit certain criteria, inevitably going for a certain percentage of inbreeding to achieve your goal, because the number of viable candidates with the correct blood types and traits is usually not as big as you might think. At some point you will encounter genetic defects. Sooner or later you can usually test for them, so future generations will hopefully not have them, but that just tightens your bottleneck of viable partners for a while, because you only want healthy, tested partners (and many don't immediately do the new tests, because they are darn expensive and your animals may no longer be viable for breeding, if they fail). This causes, you guessed it, more genetic defects, that crop up later. Maybe, just maybe you might end up with a completely perfect breed at some point. (You won't, because there is no perfect organism, but just for the sake of argument...) This perfect animal sits on a pile of suffering, because genetic testing always only happens after we have found a problem with a number of individuals.
      Genetic engineering doesn't need that. You need a certain trait and you give an animal that trait, when it is just a bunch of cells. Could this be used to cause suffering? Hell yes, but surprisingly almost all big genetic engineering projects have been for the betterment of mankind, if you believe it or not. Do you know what these glofish were invented for? To try to create fish that shines in the presence of water pollution. The aquarium glofish is a byproduct of that. They were *not* created to be children's toys or anything like that.
      Genetic modification can allow farmers to use less pesticides on their crops, allow for less suffering in meat-production and yes, less suffering in pet-breeding. We just all need to get off our high horses and stop being afraid of things, we don't quite get.
      Edit: The last part was directed at myself as much as anyone else. I was extremely and fundamentally against genetic engineering. I felt right and smart, because that is the view of pretty much any environmentalist group out there. Well, just because many say something doesn't make it right and I feel really foolish. You are already a big step farther along then I was not that long ago.

    • @hailyjohnson407
      @hailyjohnson407 2 роки тому +1

      @@JuMiKu I appreciate you being respectful and explaining it more. I do suppose that my dislike of genetic modification does come from a general lack of knowledge of the risks and benefits. I will be honest and admit that I don't have the time to devote to researching and understanding it either, so I don't believe my education on it will be improving much any time soon. But I appreciate you not treating me like I'm stupid or talking down to me. I do know a little about it, but honestly not much other than knowing that crops have been genetically enhanced with various animal DNA in order to be more resistant to cold or droughts or fungal infections, which are great, but it does worry me about what could go wrong as a result of this. That's really interesting that the intention with glowfish was to detect water pollution instead of just looking cool. I do love to learn new things, so thank you for taking the time to share this with me. I will do my best in the future to not hold/express negative views on things I'm not well educated on. The idea of genetic modification is both fascinating but also uncomfortable to me, but I hope I will have time in the future to widen my knowledge on it.

They shut down the entire place, and the few axolotls left were the ones that hadn’t found a new home. It made me so happy to know that there are kind hearted people who care. Love the content but you actually got the part about glowfish wrong! They were created for environmental research, originally, not for decoration.
    The long term goal was to create the animals as bio-indicators of certain toxins in the water. They were supposed to glow in the presence of pollutants, but instead just ended up as florescent fish that glowed all the time. While they weren’t immediately useful for the research goals, they obviously took off in the pet market.
    Also, goldfish are genetically modified too. All domestic fish are. Selective breeding is just the method used. There is no reason to *inherently* fear any genetically modified organism on the basis of it being genetically modified. It’s the way it’s been altered that counts.

    Thank you so much Soda Pets for this! This is so educating!
    One question I really need help on:
    At are local park in the Summer time when even when we first moved in to our state our local park has these really big pretty Koi fish and turtles and frogs. The frogs and turtles obviously were not dumbed ( Maybe the turtles???) but the Koi fish after seeing this video might be. The Koi fish have been there for maybe 5 years now. What do you think??? Did the park maybe put the Koi in on purpose so people would enjoy feeding them and seeing them? A ton of people around the park feed them fish food and bread! Let me know!!

    I don't know if any of you are aware, but they have Glo Bettas now. I used to work at a petsmart, and a common problem is that they have cataracts. Some of them are just straight up blind. They also have other problems, but the cataracts are the most severe. I hate Glo Fish. So much.

    Makes me wonder how many they are losing to. So not only are they hurting the animals but potentially the environment too if the animals get loose. Which is what leads to these dumb bills getting passed that hurt the rest of us responsible pet owners (not to mention actually harming th environment!!!!!).

    Given that the movie Dolphin Kick clearly shows a captive dolphin, and a message about getting the captive dolphin back to its pod (that would in reality be far away and the dolphin estranged from it), I think knowledge about what constitutes an animal's "real environment" often isn't that great in general. And we as a whole often have limited knowledge of how well, and in what way, creatures adapt (like you can't know whether the reason an animal eats only one food is because they are a picky eater or because they can only digest that one thing until you see if the animal is capable of digesting and consuming a different food source, and if the reason isn't the animal being a picky eater it is too late for the species).
