I feel like the only longtime fan who really digs "More Joy" a lot. It's actually my favorite of the advance singles so far.

As a lyrics man, I am shocked at the depth of maturity in Simon’s lyrics. The escapism-which is my favorite part of Duran and usually an indicator of whether I give the album a thumbs up or not-is minimal, but Simon has looked deep inside his soul to write this stark poetry. He stares down time, space, mortality, existence, love’s fragility directly and comes to some soberingly frank yet deeply romantic conclusions. I am shocked at how beautiful things turned out. Simon even breaks the fourth wall a couple of times and sings about the songs themselves causing this sonic recursion. I did not expect this. At best, I was hoping for a slightly better Paper Gods. It surpassed that by far. This album could only be made by a matured band who has grown and become wiser in life and maybe a little burned by its slings and arrows. Lastly, I don’t know of any other band who can make you want dance to a song about facing one’s own mortality or the complexities of love. It’s a modernized take on Duran Duran being the band playing while the bombs drop. Oh, and “Hammerhead” might be a modern take on the dialogue between the ego and alter ego in “New Religion.” I haven’t actually shed a tear or two from a Duran Duran song since maybe The Wedding Album in 1993, but I found myself becoming emotional over the lyrics on this album several times.

Firstly, thank you for this fantastic review about their new album, especially as you have written about Simon Le Bon's lyrics from the songs on this album.
what i believed happended with the direction of this album, is that this album before the lockdown of covid, may have sounded a lot different in its musicial scope, as well as the song lyrics from this album. Possiibly... when the group returned back inrto the recording studio, there must have been very deep reflections from the group, by what the whole world were experiencing from covid and the lockdown of the world being kept indoors. With an understanding that the band were also going to be celebrating their 40th anniversary as a group....All of these factors MUST have played a part in how Duran Duran would continue writing and recording this new studio album.
You should checkout UA-cam Rolling Stone Channel. In the promotion of this new studio album, Duran Duran did an interview with Rolling Stone magazine where they talk about ALL of the situations that reflected the creation and recording of the Future Past studio album. It is a very fascinating and very revealing interview.
I believe that 1980's British music artists may be coming out with their very best studio albums that they have released in decades, possibly due to the fact that the world has gone through covid, with all the implications these situations involve with musicians in these scenarios.
I believe this lockdown would have enabled sucessfull musicians to seriously look at their incredible music legacy and bring out albums that match their incredible 1980's succesful zenith of music creativity.
This year alone speaks for itself already.
Toyah Wilcox released her 'Posh Pop' album, her most incredible and sucessful pop album she has released in decades.
Tears for Fears recently released the single 'The Tipping Point', which has the very best of Tears for Fears music creativity on the song. This is the first time that Curt Smith and Roland Ozibal have created and recorded a new studio album together in 17 years. This new studio album by them is coming out early spring 2022, also called the Tipping Point. I very much think they will be spurnded by the sucess of Duran Duran's new album, and want to match that album's 1980's creativity, so that this Tears for Fears new studio album is one that thier World-wide fanbase truly recognizes and appreciates.
I also think you could apply these same principles to Depeche Mode if and when they are ready to write and record a new studio album.

Im sure the increased introspection stems from simon getting accused during MeToo. Despite my initial enthusiasm im not sure this album is drastically better than paper gods, i actually find it VERY similar to
paper gods in a lot of ways. As GOOD as future-past is, i keep seeing room for improvement on many of the songs.

Hell yeah Brian… the album is great! Wait until you hear Nothing Less, Hammerhead and Laughing Boy!!! Even the more instrumental b-sides (Velvet Newton & Invocation) are really great… and played as a 15 track composition it really sounds complete. I lean a little towards the esoteric, melancholic tracks; Future Past, Wing, Nothing Less, Laughing Boy, Falling etc. but it’s slamming!!! All of You feels like a hit that even non-Duranies could get into! Worth the wait for sure!!!

More joy, Laughing boy, All of you, Invocation = 4 great songs . They could appear in best album like Notorious, Rio, Wedding, Big, Rose and Seven (even if this latter has a different cadence to these 4 songs). I'm sure these are best 4 songs also for one (or two)of components of DD. Too perfect for Saturn-Venus-Jupiter

I learnt from Paper Gods that it would be better to get Future Past deluxe edition. Like in its predecessor, the bonus tracks here are very good but I didn’t expect them scattered throughout the album in such a skilful way. As for the album itself: I felt as if Jennifer Rush would appear in the title track; Wing is a hybrid of Mediterranea and Save a Prayer in the b-side of Big Thing; Nothing Less would be the perfect theme for a Bond movie directed by David Lynch; Hammerhead is so uplifting that not even the harshly criticised rap in the middle can spoil it; and Falling is so gloriously dark that even Bowie Himself would have been proud of his longtime collaborator. A very rich and musically mature album from the pretty boys… I mean, the amazing old codgers.

  • @izzyworld8068

Wow!! I have to say it lives up to the hype! I LOVE the fact the extra tracks are within the album flow rather than tagged on the end and add to the experience.
Not one duff track, and all very different. I was dubious about the track "Hammerhead" which I was told had the rap by Ivorian Doll, but it really was fine and the backing gospel type vocals added to the atmosphere.
"All of You" is bloody incredible, especially the guitar .
Oh and "Anniversary" is a longer, album cut and is EVEN BETTER for it.
Simon's vocals are on form and the best I've heard him deliver. And lyrically he has surpassed himself.
Rhodes' keyboards are incredible throughout, John's bass is there in all it's glory and Roger's drums lock in and he drives so much of the album.
Kudos to Greame Coxon's contributions on most of the album, he is outstanding.
Erol Alkin has steered the band, playing on their strengths and pushing them to do their best... it feels like a cohesive listening experience.
This is not only a return to form, it's something new and their finest work.

There's a whole lot of variety here. As if they didn't have a specific overall plan or theme, just did whatever they felt like doing and had fun. This is a very cinematic collection and they really should title the next James Bond film 'Wing' because we already have the theme tune here! Great work DD. I have not heard the new Album yet, but will get to hear the album soon.
I am very surprised that you think that this new album is one of their very best since one ( or maybe a couple of albums) from the 1980's.
Did you get to hear their Wedding Album, from the 1990s? That album was a very impressive album. It's the album that had Ordinary World, which for them was really considered a big comeback single for the group .In fact, Ordinary World was a worldwide hit for The group.
The album also had no fillers on that album, with killer tracks such as. Too Much Information, Come Undone and Love Vodoo. Personaly, I think Love Vodoo should have been released as a single.
The Wedding Album was a very important album for Duran Duran, because it was a moment in time where they were embracing new technologies of the recording studio. The album embraced Club Dance Music and Ambient Electronic a Production, in a way that Duran had not truly embraced before.
It was fantastic to hear a track like invisible from this new studio album, that embraced their earlier sound, but for me; as icing on the cake....it is the Anniversary track that is classic 1980's Duran Duran.
They have not embraced this type of musicality for a very long period.
I am very excited about how fans around the world will take this album. I believe Duran Duran have very much made this new studio album for classic fans of the group.

TWA did have fillers. The OW, CU and TMI songs were so brilliant that it overshadowed the duds. But Future Past album has NO fillers. Tonight United is weak and they should have swapped it with Laughing Boy from the bonus tracks but otherwise this album is solid in a way TWA wasnt.

    • @greengrass1072

I always wondered myself why Love Voodoo wasn’t released as a single. They had such great momentum going after the other two singles that LV would’ve been a perfect choice for a third single. But I also believe Vertigo should’ve been the second single released off Notorious too. That song was amazing and the logical choice after the title track as a single. We all know what happened instead. Getting back to this album, I don’t get the love here. There might be two or three songs on the album that are decent to this old school fan. It’s just more of the same, Duran featuring “so and so” with practically no guitar. It’s programmed music over a drum machine for the most part. I don’t get the, “it sounds like old school Duran.” No it doesn’t. Old school Duran had Simon singing with four musicians you distinctly heard. Their best songs always had a great guitar melody/riff/hook and that’s just completely vanished the last four albums. Hey, there’s always Reportage. One can hope.

    • @rogerhoward7498

@@greengrass1072 I think the problem is that Classic 1980's bands like Duran Duran and ( just recently band with a new single in 17 years) The original Tears for Fears; are never going to come out with an Album like they distinctly did in the 1980's. The urgency of Record Companies and Mangers will always tell classic bands that it's not a safe bet recording directly an album in the way they did in the 1980's. Bands like Duran Duran and Tears for Fears are not those kind of bands to release albums the way they did in the 1980's today, because their whole music agenda is being the kind of band that is technology progressive in the times they are creating and producing music albums.
It is still though the most beautiful thing to witness when a classic band such as Duran Duran and Tears For Fears can instantly capture the naturally musicality of when they were at their very best in the 1980's.
Classic band do not necessary have to follow the new progressive music formulas, just because we have made so much vast improvements since the 1980's.
If you want any other proof of that fact, just listen to these 3 classic track s that really classic group ABBA have released in front of their new studio album coming out on November 5th this year.
A classic group can today follow a classic music formula that they have always done, the real trick for sales ability of the studio album is mainly coming from Music studio album production.
It is a very safe bet, that when a classic group, captures their classic musicality of the past; it is BEST to work with ambient studio production.
This is the type of production that will never seem old fashioned, even if you are a band working with completely old- fashioned, classic music formulas.

I’m not saying come out with something that sounds like Rio or Ragged. My problem is there’s nothing organic sounding anymore. There’s nothing memorable that was created in the new batch of tunes, nothing. Same with Paper, AYNIN and RCM. No one expected anything from them in 1993, they were supposed to be done and washed up. All of a sudden Ordinary World comes out of nowhere and even non Duran fans were like, wait a minute, this song is awesome. A great song is still a great song. They created a classic and the rest of the album had some great songs and they were back. But like every other time they had momentum in their career, they lost it, they’re good at that. Duran is far from my favorite band, but I was huge fan after Rio and followed them and still bought EVERYTHING up to Astronaut. Rush was actually my favorite and no one changed their sound as much as them to varying success, but still kept to the same basic element throughout their whole career. Duran seems more interested in being played in a club in Miami then pleasing a lot of their long time fans in once was a large fan base. Of course you’re gonna hear, “this is great” by the diehards. But this was a band that once made great pop tunes, even after their 81-85 heyday, that’s what bugs me. It bugs me that Nick Rhodes is the Napoleon of this band and if he can’t get his way, the rest will hear about it until he does. If he didn’t have Duran, he’d be a DJ somewhere. I’m not saying he never did anything worthwhile for the band, he did, but he should not be the guy that sets the musical direction of this band and they’ve suffered for it. Andy left not once, but twice because of him, read his book. This band is at its best when there’s a strong guitarist in the band. As far as ABBA, Nick isn’t a quarter of the musician or songwriter Benny or Bjorn is.

@@greengrass1072 I got to listen to Future Past album on Amazon Music yesterday.
You were right...This is really is Duran Duran's finest album since the last one from the 1980's or it's certainly up there with their finest albums of the 1980's.
If a classic Pop or Rock Group is on a nostalgia with their music, you know truly where the album is going if you listen to the 2nd track on the album. The 2nd track on Future Past is called: All of You, and you can hear the Musical DNA of Duran Duran's 1980's past. The album continues with this 1980's musical DNA all through the album, even with present day technologies and musicalities. You are absolutely right, there is no fillers on Future Past. Every single on this album has the potential of either being a Top 10 or Top 20, British Music Chart Single. The album is an absolute joy from start to finish.
This musical DNA on Future Past is how Fans fell in love with this group in the first place.
The sounds of modular 1980's electronic keyboard sounds is a joy to hold, as are the arrangements for female soulful singers. It's all back to the 1980's Rio Days, Wild boys, hungry Like a wolf,etc..days. That is the incredible revelations of this incredible album.
You know...the 1990''s ( rather the beginning of the 1990's) was just like the 1980's I mean in terms that UK Bands were coming out with incredible melodies in their music. I Think after the Liberty Album of 1990, Duran Duran were a band devoid of REAL memorable melodies as they had in the 1980's.
During the decades they would still come out with incredible melodies in their songs, but these were very few and far between in the context of their studio albums.
There were those songs that built on musical innovations. For example: on the Liberty album they would draw on 1950's/ early 1960's Rock n Roll for the Violence of Summer Single. They would draw on 60's Psychedelica for the single Somebody Else Not Me from the Pop Trash Album. These music genre songs were very few and far between in these periods also.
Another truly BIG THING that did not work in Duran Duran's favour were some of the videos that was released to songs in later periods.
Reach Up For the Sunrise was considered another comeback song for the group, but it had a rubbish music video, that did no favours for Duran Duran. Remember...we are talking about THE MOST LEADING INNOVATIVE MUSIC VIDEO BAND HERE. That's why the music video for Anniversary is such a revelation here, because that music video also plays into Duran Duran's visual past. The music video is most honest and original to who Duran Duran naturally is as music visual pioneers of the music- visual medium.
I think what Future Past proves more than anything else is that Duran Duran ARE naturally ( or rather should be heard) as a 1980's group, even with modern 21st Century music innovations.
The 1980's is the NATURAL music DNA that truly is at the heart of this very popular group.

That was great but was the Rio follow up that never was sonically , this is authentic raw more experimental DD 2021. I love the rocky side of DD and I absolutely LOVE this . Arcadia is also comes to mind which was genius and did not have much guitars either …this albums is EPIC in my opinion . A great step forward for the band with this effort
