4:52 Tbf it was always like that even in the OG games. You always got the Eon legendary who was the opposite color of your game. Its just in the OG games you didn't get them midgame so they weren't relevant to a speedrun unless going for a 100% run.

Calling Kyogre Kee-oh-gree is one of the biggest Ls the anime ever took. The only thing worse than that that I can think of is calling Rattata Rattatat.
@@David_the_Psalmist not my fault that's how it's said in both my native language. Same with Rayquaza being Ry(like Ride) Kwa Za and Arceus being Ar seh oos. Spanish is a funny language like that.
Torchic can't beat Roxanne That's mostly it. Torchic absolutely cannot beat Roxanne without unreasonable luck. Combusken can, but you don't have a Combusken, you have a Torchic, and if you grind for Combusken, you are now irrecoverably behind pace
I remember doing a for-fun Latias only run of AS. It was fun and doable, but it was sort of frustrating how all the league match-ups are very unfavorable. Dark type, Ghost type, Ice Type, and Dragon type are all super effective against my red plane wife. Obviously not a speed run :D.
I'm starting to wonder if it would be faster to use Treecko instead. You get Rock Tomb right after the first gym to deal with all of Grass' weaknesses except for poison, and it adds more type variety compared to using both Mudkip and Kyogre, plus Latias can learn Surf, Dive, and Waterfall.
Treecko is just not good in these games, worst starter choice as it doesn't do well with most of the gyms and anything after..it also ironically doesn't do well against team aqua as most of team aquas pokemon aren't water types and super effective against grass types..they mostly use dark, flying, and poison types (if it was a viable option the speedrunners would of tried it)
@@testerwulf3357 it's honestly very underrated, but even then, it is unfortunately not fast enough to compete for the speedrun. Also, mudkip has the added benefit of learning all required HMs, meaning you don't have to catch anything else (except for the box legendary) in the run.
You lose to Wattson, lose to Flannery, and need to catch a Surf pokemon. You can grind or catch pokemon to help this, but than means you are now behind pace and will never recover. The only other way to save time would be if Treecko was better than Latias and/or Kyogre through midgame and lategame. It is not. It gets pushed in by Winona, has no tools to deal with Golbat or Weezing well, dies even harder to Glacia, flounders against Drake, and dies screaming to Steven. It is also constantly making contact with Sharpedo which, while I can't say for sure, probably means there are items you need to use between certain fights, and possibly some pokemon Sceptile just doesn't have the HP left to survive a hit from.
I guess the time loss in grabbing the Thunder TM or saving a few rare candies so Sheer Cold *won’t work* just isn’t worth it for a consistent Glacia. Better to wrestle with RNG forever.
You are correct in your assumption! Speedruns are all about giving and taking things in as little time as possible, and these solutions don't give back enough timesave.
1 thing you didn’t mention is that groundon gets access to solar beam, that is a 1 turn move if the sun is up so the water gym goes down instantly to it
I assume that wasn't mentioned because it's usually not worth it lol. The boosted fire moves from sunlight and the ground moves scaling off its insane physical attack are nutty.
I guess that makes it fair since Sapphire was by far the best version to speedrun, so Omega Ruby is by far the best version to speedrun for the remakes.
Yo blaziken looks amazing for a alpha sapphire speed run. Too sad that you need to catch a water type because Latias encounters right after the first surf area.
Just curious, if the early stages of AS are so difficult due to water types like Carvana/Sharpedo then why not use Treecko as the starter instead? Grass would still do well against the first Gym and the aqua grunts, and it learning Absorb/Mega Drain would still give it STAB that's neutral to fighting types while letting it recover a bit to compensate for lower defense.
@@PulseEffects Didn't expect a reply haha. I was just wondering if it would have at least done up until you reached Latias and then could be boxed for the rest of the game since you couldn't do that in the original Ruby and Sapphire so early.
@@caldw615 Then you'd also have to waste time capturing Pokemon to use the required HMs with. This is why Mudkip is so much better- it also learns every required HM so you don't have to spend time on captures.
@@caldw615 Even were it not for that, though, Grovyle would face huge problems once you reached Flannery, since Grovyle isn't anywhere near strong enough to deal with her Torkoal (heck, even taking out her Slugma is a tough one), without excessive grinding and Flannery is before you get access to Latias.
I used lastias in sword and shield for a while and lemme tell ya, this thing has milotic defense, but it's on steroids. It's defense is what it makes it so good, along with that good speed. Like latios, they have access to thunderbolt, calm mind and ice beam! I'm not sure if they're available in Oras but I guarantee it gets it now. It's a good pokemon but I don't like the fact I have to calm mind before doing real damage
Latias was always supposed to be the defense version but unfortunately the overall idea of the Pokemon is way better for offensive purposes so Latias always seems to be better even for Calm Mind sets.
@@gregorymirabella1423 This Because you CAN beat Glacia reasonably without Rare Candies, that means you HAVE to if you wanna go for WR. Kinda like the no Blue Orb strat itself. Groudon basically has to use it without unreasonable luck, so using it hasn't been worked out of the WR yet, but because Kyogre reasonably can, you have to.
"They literally gave the blue Pokémon to the red game." It was like that with the original Ruby and Sapphire. It was like that with Pokémon Black and White versions; Black got Reshiram, White got Zekrom. This isn't new. I don't have sympathy for the kvetching about OR getting Latios since that was also true of Ruby version back in 2002/2003, twelve years prior to ORAS. Hell, it was worse in Ruby and Sapphire as you couldn't get them until postgame, and they were roaming Pokémon. Also, no, Muk is not hard to KO for Latias. Yes, Latias isn't as offensive as Latios. BUT PSYCHIC IS STILL SUPER EFFECTIVE AGAINST POISON.
I don't really care if it was in the originals. That’s irellivent, and it should have been changed for these games. Also, Super Effective doesn't mean anything when Muk does not die to Super Effective moves. You should really look up Muk's stats or watch a speedrun if you're really gonna try and argue that. 😅
6:25 in to the video and I could swear my spotify is playing quietly in the background, nope that's just the backing track of the video. Home - Resonance if anyone is interested :D
Wouldnt a quick trip to the Lillycove department store to get the Thunder TM help with the Walrein? I get that its a speedrun, so time is of the essence, but i think you could make up for the time lost by not needing to set up on the fight
ive always thought pokemon speedrunning was kinda insane cause when you push things that far the game seems to be pure luck (which is fun in its own way but very different from other speed runs)
Latias is my favourite out of the two because I just like her :) Sapphire was the game I chose when I was a lil’un and it’s what I picked when the remakes came out. Heck, I picked White during Gen 5 and then when the sequels were up for grabs, I had to pick Black 2, which conflicts with the story but I Latias was exclusive to B2!
I love this pokemon game so much its my childhood i spent hundreds of hours playing it and i caught my first shiny. Sadly i lost the cartridge. Rest in peace my lvl 100 shiny magicarp named god you will always have a special place in my heart
Sheer cold has the same chance to hit (4% higher in this case as people have pointed out) as Scald has a chance to burn. And anyone who has played showdown or in-game competitive during gen 5-8 will know, that's high enough to be very painful indeed.
It's important to note that OHKO moves aren't a flat 30% and their accuracy changes based on level. your of a lower level than the pokemon using it, the accuracy increases by 1% for each level. In all of the instances shown, since Kyogre was level 50, Walrein's sheer cold was a 34% chance to hit, so in theory a slightly higher than 1 in 3 chance, which is way scarier of a situation.
Would... would it maaaaybe be better to use the treeko line? All of the issues seem to be water type pokemon, and aside from the ice/water combo at the end sceptile may be able to hit harder
My guess is that aside from team aqua, mudkip does better against all other trainers. Like I could see wattson giving players a hard time, due to the possibility of paralysis, as well as flannery being a pain too. Also you need something that can use surf as well so you’d have to waste time finding another surfer, cause even if latias can learn surf you need to surf to get to her. I am sure there are a ton of other factors as well, but I’m i guess that’s why they call this speedrun a mess.
Well for one treecko can’t learn every required hm so not an option. This is without considering how bad it is for rival fights. If surf is required you use the water starter just sometimes you catch something to use instead like in gen 1 how people use nidoking
@@PulseEffects not all rival fights. It *does* eventually get swords dance + dig. But rival 2 is a biiiiig pain in the butt, especially because combusken isn't even weak to rock tomb, lol.
lol i play omega ruby and primal groudon is indeed very overpowered for becoming immune to and shutting down water moves. And if your Groudon is slower its ability will come AFTER Kyogre shutting down Primordial Sea.
Tbh I'm still surprised after all this time, gamefreak hasn't added a "skip cutscene" button to their games. It's easy to code, isn't intrusive (eg. it can be put in the top right/bottom right corner with simply (skip cutscene?) (Skip scene?) or simply (skip?) and would help not just speedrunners but people who already played the game and don't want to sit around to watch something they already saw. If it's to prevent kids skipping important world-building or where to go/what to do in the story, you can just add an objective to the game menu (if they haven't done so already) or maybe make it so you can contact the professor at a pc for help; sinc every pokemon center has one and you'll always need to go to one anyway.
Technically, the modern games do have a skip cutscene option (I believe it was added in Gen 8). However, it only has limited usefulness as very few things are actually considered "cutscenes" by the games.
beautiful video, really well put together, yeah the red 1 is wayy better than the blue one, so im happy its in alpha cos id rather have it than the blue guy
Mmm. In a Nuzkocke, Sapphire is probably much more even, but still a bit harder in account of how universally free Camerupt is. Anyone can fish up a Luvdisc or a Maril, slap Surf on it, and send Camerupt to sleep. But Latias is probably the better fit for a Nuzlocke (if you use it), Lotad is a way better pickup than Shiftry, Sableye makes Brawly free, ect
@@aprinnyonbreak1290 that’s fair, but even staying under level caps and not having rare candy cheats, I only ever lost two mons. One to a sad crit in the first gym, and the other against Steven’s Metagross. So it wasn’t too bad.
Omega ruby was my first Pokémon game and it got me into Pokémon super fast. Mudkip just carrying me until I could get all the legendaries felt actually legendary.
I can only have so much sympathy for the Latios/Latias version specific issue. I bought Pokemon Black when it came out specifically because I wanted Zekrom and I got Reshiram. This is not a new issue.
You're slightly wrong about Karate Chop for the Black Belt, its actually worse than you make it out to be, with a Focus Energy up Karate Chop has ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT CRIT RATE, due to how crit rate boosts get calculated starting from Gen6 on. +1 Crit Rate: 25% chance of a crit +2 Crit Rate: 50% chance of a crit +3 and upCrit Rate: 100% chance of a crit (unless some effect prevents them) Karate Chop being a high crit rate move has an innate +1, Focus Energy gives you +2 Crit Rate. So anything that uses Focus Energy has an innate 50% chance to crit with any attack, god forbid they use something with a crit rate to it where the crit can't be avoided outside of Abilities that block crits, Lucky Chant or an item similar to an X-Item. This can be exploited with either high crit rate moves or giving said mon a Scope Lens or Razor Claw, this gets pretty nasty on Kingdra (Focus Energy + Scope Lens) who can freely spam Draco Meteor due to crits ignoring the Draco Meteor stat drops. Oh and it's Critical Hits do more damage with Sniper as it's ability. It's not speedrun relevant but it's a fun thing to mess around with. A Rain boosted Sniper Crit Hydro Pump has an 82% chance to two-shot an Eviolite Chancey (4 HP and 252 Special Defense) after Stealth Rocks at Level 50, at Level 100 it's a much lower 26.8% chance.
Nah, I had to stop watching when you said, Kyogree. Also, Latios was in Ruby, and Latias in Sapphire, so it makes complete sense to have that stay the same in the remakes
in a game that mostly consists of skipping through dialogue, overworld movement and waiting for animation-related stuff, that is a substantial difference.

4:52 Tbf it was always like that even in the OG games. You always got the Eon legendary who was the opposite color of your game. Its just in the OG games you didn't get them midgame so they weren't relevant to a speedrun unless going for a 100% run.

no, it wouldn't. Otherwise speedrunners would use it.
Torchic can't beat Roxanne
That's mostly it.
Torchic absolutely cannot beat Roxanne without unreasonable luck.
Combusken can, but you don't have a Combusken, you have a Torchic, and if you grind for Combusken, you are now irrecoverably behind pace
Shouldn’t treecko be better?
Latass my beloved
4:44 Yeah, well, guess what? The Black Pokémon is in the White game, and the White Pokémon is in the Black game.
And nobody complained about that.
My favorite boy Machop, finally getting some time in the spotlight!
Love the Latias named 'Latios' at 5:14 there. The cope is real.
This game made my childhood
Thankful for the moments I had with my cousins
Playing 3DS and having fun as kids
Goddamn, that made me feel old. It was the same way for me with the 2nd and 3rd gen games
1 thing you didn’t mention is that groundon gets access to solar beam, that is a 1 turn move if the sun is up so the water gym goes down instantly to it
Solar Beam is not used for the speedrun! Its Ground/Fire moves obliterate everything in its path.
You did not nickname your latias “Latios” that is next level lmao
An "HM friend". Taking the safe route huh
HM?
i just realized that Resonance is the track used for this video, what a neat touch
Yo blaziken looks amazing for a alpha sapphire speed run. Too sad that you need to catch a water type because Latias encounters right after the first surf area.
Yeah I’m curious how much time you’d have to lose to catching a Lotad. Though the first gym being rock probably hurts the Torchic pick as well.
i enjoyed this thoroughly, i need more.
Kai-Oh-Gree 😭
Just curious, if the early stages of AS are so difficult due to water types like Carvana/Sharpedo then why not use Treecko as the starter instead? Grass would still do well against the first Gym and the aqua grunts, and it learning Absorb/Mega Drain would still give it STAB that's neutral to fighting types while letting it recover a bit to compensate for lower defense.
Not worth using Grovyle! It gets walled harder by worse threats than Carvanha. (Rivals/Gyms)
@@Hyperneosonic97 Ah that's true, I forgot there's like 3 HM's just for traversing water in this game alone.
I screamed so loud at Lati-Ass 😂😂😂
I used lastias in sword and shield for a while and lemme tell ya, this thing has milotic defense, but it's on steroids. It's defense is what it makes it so good, along with that good speed. Like latios, they have access to thunderbolt, calm mind and ice beam! I'm not sure if they're available in Oras but I guarantee it gets it now. It's a good pokemon but I don't like the fact I have to calm mind before doing real damage
Latias was always supposed to be the defense version but unfortunately the overall idea of the Pokemon is way better for offensive purposes so Latias always seems to be better even for Calm Mind sets.
i wonder if you can get 5 rare candies for kyogre before glacia to prevent the ohko
you can grind in Victory Road and just don't waste those rare candies on any pokemon in Alpha Sapphire speedruns (where kyogre is allowed)
@@kstanni87 does grinding not add to the speedrun time?
takes too much time. you can potentially get WR if you just gamble on not getting OKHO'd, so everyone just hopes for the best.

This
Because you CAN beat Glacia reasonably without Rare Candies, that means you HAVE to if you wanna go for WR.
Kinda like the no Blue Orb strat itself.
Groudon basically has to use it without unreasonable luck, so using it hasn't been worked out of the WR yet, but because Kyogre reasonably can, you have to.
"They literally gave the blue Pokémon to the red game."
It was like that with the original Ruby and Sapphire.

Wouldnt a quick trip to the Lillycove department store to get the Thunder TM help with the Walrein? I get that its a speedrun, so time is of the essence, but i think you could make up for the time lost by not needing to set up on the fight
Rival fight blocks it
ive always thought pokemon speedrunning was kinda insane cause when you push things that far the game seems to be pure luck (which is fun in its own way but very different from other speed runs)
Exactly why I love Pokemon Speedruns!
as a kid i after beating the game like 2-3 times i always speedrunned the games for the legendaries to trade them
Latias is my favourite out of the two because I just like her :) Sapphire was the game I chose when I was a lil’un and it’s what I picked when the remakes came out.
Heck, I picked White during Gen 5 and then when the sequels were up for grabs, I had to pick Black 2, which conflicts with the story but I Latias was exclusive to B2!

Sheer cold has the same chance to hit (4% higher in this case as people have pointed out) as Scald has a chance to burn. And anyone who has played showdown or in-game competitive during gen 5-8 will know, that's high enough to be very painful indeed.
The latias and numel slander is wild, all for the speed runners lol
It's important to note that OHKO moves aren't a flat 30% and their accuracy changes based on level. your of a lower level than the pokemon using it, the accuracy increases by 1% for each level. In all of the instances shown, since Kyogre was level 50, Walrein's sheer cold was a 34% chance to hit, so in theory a slightly higher than 1 in 3 chance, which is way scarier of a situation.
That Trauma Center music got me mad nostalgic though

Would... would it maaaaybe be better to use the treeko line? All of the issues seem to be water type pokemon, and aside from the ice/water combo at the end sceptile may be able to hit harder
My guess is that aside from team aqua, mudkip does better against all other trainers. Like I could see wattson giving players a hard time, due to the possibility of paralysis, as well as flannery being a pain too. Also you need something that can use surf as well so you’d have to waste time finding another surfer, cause even if latias can learn surf you need to surf to get to her. I am sure there are a ton of other factors as well, but I’m i guess that’s why they call this speedrun a mess.
Like most Grass Pokemon, Rival fights kinda ruin its potential. I'm pretty sure it doesn't learns the HMs we need either.
Well for one treecko can’t learn every required hm so not an option. This is without considering how bad it is for rival fights. If surf is required you use the water starter just sometimes you catch something to use instead like in gen 1 how people use nidoking
I would for speedruns but we would need a second pokemon for surf and waterfall and dive. And swampernt learns em all
@@PulseEffects not all rival fights. It *does* eventually get swords dance + dig. But rival 2 is a biiiiig pain in the butt, especially because combusken isn't even weak to rock tomb, lol.
when/where does the cutscene between 0:00 and 0:08 come from? I don't remember it and I'm really curious
it's from when you travel on kyogre/groudon's back and fight their primal form
lol i play omega ruby and primal groudon is indeed very overpowered for becoming immune to and shutting down water moves.
Please never say Kyogre again
If you have another 3DS with the Eon Ticket, you can send an eon ticket to your other game and get Latios after defeating Kyogre.
beautiful video, really well put together, yeah the red 1 is wayy better than the blue one, so im happy its in alpha cos id rather have it than the blue guy

4:49 you realize that was how it was in original Ruby and sapphire right?

8:10 During my Pokemon Platinum Nuzlocke, the K.O. attack was used on my Pokemon 4 times, and it hit 3 times... 30% is a lot when an AI attacks
You're slightly wrong about Karate Chop for the Black Belt, its actually worse than you make it out to be, with a Focus Energy up Karate Chop has ONE-HUNDRED PERCENT CRIT RATE, due to how crit rate boosts get calculated starting from Gen6 on.
+1 Crit Rate: 25% chance of a crit
+2 Crit Rate: 50% chance of a crit
+3 and upCrit Rate: 100% chance of a crit (unless some effect prevents them)
Karate Chop being a high crit rate move has an innate +1, Focus Energy gives you +2 Crit Rate.
I know it requires friendship, but I would've expected to see water pledge involved in this video
Nah, I had to stop watching when you said, Kyogree. Also, Latios was in Ruby, and Latias in Sapphire, so it makes complete sense to have that stay the same in the remakes
Sounds like you should waste a few seconds to teach Kyogre Thunder.
That's at least a minute of timeloss if not more.
you seem to underestimate how slow-paced pokemon games really are when it comes to ... pretty much everything.
For once, my love of the color Red pays off. Frankly, I think this is a fair trade. It's far too often that "the red thing" ends up getting shafted.
The way you pronounce kyogre should be a war crime, jfc 💀
And despite all of this, the OR record is only two minutes faster than AS
That's massive for speedrunners.
in a game that mostly consists of skipping through dialogue, overworld movement and waiting for animation-related stuff, that is a substantial difference.
I mean what about blaziken? That could easily manage against glacia and most other pokemon(at least for me, anyways)
Blaziken doesn't clear the game very fast. Especially compared to Mudkip and the two free Legends.
