James will be a "Pro" in no time. Just as soon as he masters his 1974 Ct 70 trail bike & gets rid of the "flip-flops". Going from 3.4 Hp to 60 Hp will be a snap; just like l did with my 3 hp mini-bike to a Maico 450 @ 47 Hp.
Yeah definitely wasn't giving it a fist full of throttle. I doubt most dudes would be able to handle this thing on the limiter. When it hits powerband woaaahh nelly 😄
About the only place you ever see one ridden like it's 1985 is on this channel. He will be ok on a smooth forest road. 95% of 500cc videos on UA-cam are 1/4 throttle
@@LeRescator1 no in the old days people didn't care about crashing. What I mean is you do see 500s at full throttle on this channel (most of the time). Most other channels are gentle with them these days.

Maico was always on top of the game. Their first monster was the 501. I dreamed of that bike. Test riders said in 4th gear it would do a 10ft tall rooster tale and make trenches like a tractor. No one made a 500 at the time (two stroke) then they come out with a 700. Again no other manufacturer makes one like this. I’m back to dreaming again
I remember decades ago maico brought out the maico 501 people thought maico had lost their minds, insanity some people said ! Maybe around 50 yrs ago !
@@charlesmayle3800 I was dirt bike shopping with my dad. I wasn't 16 years old yet. I was only 15. The Yamaha dealer was also the Maico dealer. They just happened to have a 501. My dad nearly had a stroke when I asked the salesmen if I could test ride on the track outback. With your 50 years comment, I realized that was all 50 years ago. "How time flies".

The "real" Maico company disappeared in 1986. Till then they were "the" name in Motocross business in Germany. Everybody wanted one of those, the street legal ones were a pretty rare sight, though. I grew up half an hour away from were the factory was. I remember a guy, he was about 1.60m tall (~ 5'2") and he wasn't able to reach ground sitting on his mighty Maico. So at every stop he had to jump off the bike and mount it again to continue riding 🙂

i noticed that 2 strokes of all kinds stopped smoking in 1977 the.year 100% synthetic smokeless 2 stroke oil was invented ..at that time Yamalub R was the best ever at 50 to 1 as this oil never made any deposits inside the engine anywhere ..the cylinder head was as clean as the day it was made and the piston same way as though it had never been installed of ran in an engine..the exhaust port no carbon deposits at all but polished shiny as the day i ported and polished it ..i had just bought a brand new 1977 YZ125 and the dealer told me "if you run this oil ill personally guarantee the motor for a month of motocross racing ...bel-ray 100% synthetic at 50 to 1 will leave a very small amount of carbon that easily comes off ..before this we were using Klotz at 50 to 1 that was used in 2 stroke go-karts that dont smoke but you have to drain in out of the tank carb and flush out the engine top to bottom every time you ride your bike or Klotz with eat up everything made out of steel ..watch some of the old footage of ABC wide world of sport when indoor supercross was born ..if it was not for smokeless synthetic 2 stroke oil ABC would not have had a show cause you would have never seen the bikes and all the spectators would have choked on regular petroleum oil when it burns ..and now i hear in you tube videos of stuff they call "spooge" that drips off the end of a 2 stroke stingers that the young no it all riders believe this is very bad tuning for a 2stroke but it is the results you want to see as smokeless oil condenses back to a liquid after the engine fires and leaves a greasy clear film that clings on to everything like STP and then eventually gets blown out the end of the pipe and looks nasty like cum thats why the noobs call it spooge ...lol dumb shits dont know anything

Yeah , I think I'd be pretty hesitant on a bike like that one at first too . Even though my last bike was an XR650L , the Maico is an absolute BEAST ! You're pretty fearless Ken to put it on its back tire so easily .
I can respect a gentlemen who feels anything worth doing is worth overdoing. However, learning how to ride is easier and more fun on a smaller/slower bike. It's more fun riding a slow bike fast then a fast bike slow.
have not seen anything this interesting since i bought my ktm 300 2 stroke, its time for another bike , this looks sweet, i do remember maico and bul taco , grew up in the 70s, raised on 2 strokes, barstow to vegas finished on a Suzuki rm 250 1979 , i was 19, great review.

Probably a strange thing to say but if I owned that I would probably get bored of it. I learned this after owning a CR 500 and almost never having the chance to really open it up, while on various 250s I could just have a lot more fun.

Love your videos! Machinists make the best mechanics! Im 43 and grew up riding dirt bikes since I was 8 years old. went to motorcycle mechanic school and then I went to machine tool school. Raced and built a bunch of drag bikes, and now i ride a ktm 625 smc and am a construction contractor now. Lol Engineering, machining, and mechanics are still skills i use everday.
@@Leonard-hk1nf I rode a 500 two stroke for many years as my daily transport and plenty of full throttle. I'm not any kind of skilled rider but if you have a brain you can still ride them without killing yourself. Time and place, weigh up the risks etc.

I want to ride one of these so bad! Growing up riding 2 stroke then getting a new 05 yz450f at age 16....then back and forth from 2 strike to 4 from 05 till now. Havent owned a dirtbike for like 5 years now but ride road bikes and play on friends diet bikes a 4wheelers. I've rode a cr500 a bunch but never a 700 2 banger! Sounds pwrfext!
At 1980 we have in Berlin make an Cavalier-Start with Maico 490 vs Kawa1000 The 2 stroke one was in front like a rocket max speed 90kmh . Runs in Dirty Water and in Snow like a snow mobile
Ive been lucky to have probably 50 hours ride time on a cr500 and i can say the big boars are more smoother power delivery they don't hit power band hard like a 250 two stroke does so don't be scared of them they are easier to ride. I would love to have a go on one of these 700cc bikes one day but they are so rare i don't think that will ever happen for me😭 may one day fingers crossed 😁

It is amazing that we now have 700cc mx bikes, back in the 70s Husky built only 2 750 cc mx bikes for testing, cycle mag wrote the artical, the final results of testing, too much hp, and the only real complaint was, it chewed up the rear tire during one day of testing. I wish i would have saved that artical. Many people wanted one but NO.. Husky did not produced the bikes to sell. They only tested one of the bikes, where the other one ended up I never found out, needless to say back then a 750cc mx bike would have zero compitition. But it sure would have been fun.

Why not??? The thing only reacts to driver input if you get used to a heavy powerful bike it'll be easy after a little while
I started on a 450 but quickly realized that my buddies 250 is nicer definitely not because I was scared at the time
I'm happy for the guy but man he probably should start off on a bike a little bit smaller than that one🤔
The power does look pretty manageable though
I don't like the exhaust. I wouldn't buy one because of that.
Bigger engines have wider power bands, a 250 can kind be easier to ride than a good running 125 in certain circumstances

I started off riding a bike that was way too powerful. After the learning process (If you survive) you become a good rider.

I wish i would have saved that artical. Many people wanted one but NO.. Husky did not produced the bikes to sell. They only tested one of the bikes, where the other one ended up I never found out, needless to say back then a 750cc mx bike would have zero compitition. But it sure would have been fun.
