Yes. In 1984 Maico contracted Zabel. To design their new water cooled cylinder. Zabel was known for Sidecar motocross racing in Europe. His knowledge of knowing how to make a two stroke make tremendous torque. Is what brought Maico to design their water cooled cylinders for the new 1984 models which in the states they were rebranded as a M star. That is the same cylinder set up and bottom end that is still used to this day in manufacturing the new model Maico’s. Other manufacturers purchased the rights to manufacture those engines to sell with their name on it. Zabel even did the same thing up until his passing a few years back. Look up a picture of a 2022 Maico 700. And you’ll see it’s the same motor that is in this particular bike! I own three different Maico‘s. All with this same configuration engine. A 1985 250 M star. The only true 700’s out there are the Maicos and extremely rare ATK’s, great bottom end torque, unfortunately everyone who doesn’t ride a big bore thinks you can stuff a Zabel engine into a light frame to get a fast bike, and unfortunately it doesn’t work like that.
