We as a family had absolutely no money growing up, bacon grill was a staple and I still love it today. My wife and I both earn decent money now but her family had money whilst she was growing up so bacon grill was not on their table! I still love bacon grill, takes me back to being a kid. I call it poor people food because that’s exactly why we ate it, it was so cheap. Bacon grill is now my weekend breakfast treat, bloody love it slathered in brown sauce! Banging stuff 👌🏻
Actually got one of those in my ration collection, and the Polish rations still have something very similar in theirs they call it 'English bacon lunch meat' lol
Fried, in a soft roll with brown sauce and a fried egg on top. Food of the Gods that makes 4 rolls for well under a quid a piece. Perfect for Saturday lunch!
I’ve always got a couple of tins in the cupboard. I like to chop it in to cubes, fry for a couple of minutes, add in some baked beans. Then have it on toast.
Hi Gareth, as a master butcher with my own shop, i can tell you that In the trade, Royal Dane is considered the Rolls Royce of chopped ham and pork! We buy in the big cans to slice and sell at our cooked meat counter and sell a case of 12 x 3lb cans in a month! Mmmm! I sometimes cut a couple of burger thickness slices and pop them in the oven for 10 mins and stick em on a nice fluffy roll!👍 Love old fashioned bacon grill tho, originally made by Plumose! Good stuff!😋👏👏♥️🏴
Bacon Grill is one of my guilty pleasures too, Goes well with a nice bit of extra strong mature cheddar cheese on top, or alternatively chop it into small chunks and put it in with your baked beans in the saucepan
Now we're talking, two or three fried slices of bacon grill and a fried egg in a soft floury bap... lovely! I've noticed that bacon grill is one of those things that's gone up in price a lot over the last year or so. Farmfoods do the 'Ye Olde Oak' brand which is only 99p at the moment, much cheaper than other brands...
Wow this takes me back. When me and my 4 brothers were kids in the middle 50’ we survived on spam fritters and chips. We had nowt everyone was poor but we loved those spam fritters . And if the gas man had been to empty the meter we would have a fried egg with it as well. 🤣🤣👍
me old Dad was in the royal artillery and used to have a stash of tinned bacon grill and ham in the top of the cupboard for "emergencies" and i do that as well. its usually 300g tins of pek and i like asda bacon grill, i get pek when its on sale for a quid and you can usually get it 3 or 4 years best before. They came in handy during lockdown and can be used in salad, sarnies, bunged in baked beans wiv onion or fried with an egg on top lovely
Nice. I might have to try this one sometime. Biggest tip with those type of tins is to retain a key afterwards. Comes in very handy when you get a tin and don't realise the key is missing!
That was a blast from the past. In the South of England I haven’t seen this for years, but I used to like it. I like the odd spam fritter and my local fish and chip shop use to do spam fritters in batter until recently. I was told they stopped doing them because the spam tainted their cooking oil. A great review that brings back memories and I used to like frying them and getting them a bit crispy around the edges, too the best part. You seem to gave far more diverse stores up North than in Southern England.
If you can't find Royal Dane Bacon Grill then try looking in Iceland or Tesco for Tulip Bacon Grill, It's the same stuff and still much cheaper than Spam. Hope this helps.
Had a can last week, quick-cook tip, slice med-thin, approx half the block will yield 4 even slices. arrange on a microwave dish, cover, (you can put on it kitchen roll) 2-ish mins, flip, 1 min, can even put some cheese on top to melt same time, slide off onto bread of choice, or dice and stick in noodles/rice/insta-mash pot/macaroni cheese etc 🥓🥪👍delish!
LOL, love it. I had a feeling that "rat packs" might get a mention there. Here's an idea: How about doing some vids on "Rat Pack Recipes", as that might be a fun way to share or even simulate how Squaddies used to make their compo ration packs just a little less predictable. Nicknames too: Cheese Possessed. Screech. Babies Heads. Happy days.
I haven't seen daddies for years. It was always my dads favorite. I really like bramwells. (Aldi). Great review as always and i like bacon grill in a toastie with onions. Yummy.
Thanks for reviewing this product I have a few tins of this in the pantry, but have never actually tried it, as i relied on a very distant memory of Danish spam.
Back in my youth, my would buy either SPAM or Danish Bacon. They were OK on a salad or she would batter them and make fritters. Lovely 🥰. MRE's on exercise? You couldn't beat Bacon Grill and Compo Sausages with beans. 🤤🤤. I still have an Army tin opener on my keyring. Tins of SPAM are going up in price but there're are cheaper options to be had. A great review. It took me back quite a few years.
Can tell you've been in the army. You're a survivor. I always loved canned corned beef as well. Leave it to dry out for a day. Becomes firmer and so much tastier. 🙂
Hiya Gareth, the A. R. M. down to the cost of the ingredients. Much cheaper than the proper cuts of meat. These tinned pink blocks of??? 🤔Do a job. Cheapish meal, with chips or baked beans maybe mashed potato. I always breadcrumb mine and deep fry. Same with corned beef 😊 And like you showed it, in a bap/cob or roll. Handy little fist filler. See you in the next video mate. All the best Allan&Family
Yummy i love a bit of wee bacon grill 😋. I would have it on toast with some good tomato sauce on it. Salty & sweet flavour, it hit the spot growing up. Don't eat it as much, but whenever i do it takes me back to my nanna's on a Sunday morning! Xx 💖
I agree about the key openings, when they work they are fine but they can be lethal. 😳. Loved Benny Hill. Spam has got fairly expensive here in Australia

Hi Gareth! is Denmark a nation of pork production? It seems the best bacon, ham and bacon grill comes from there? i know the brand you are reviewing, nice served with tinned spaghetti all the best John
You need to try Grant's A and B roll. It's a mix of beef and ham. It went out of production but came back a couple of years ago. When you were ill in Scotland as a child it was one of the foods you were given because it was supposed to be easy to digest.
Love to see you do a corned beef comparison especially considering how astronomically the prices have increased across the board in the last couple of years.
When my kids were young in the early 1990s, I had a trailer tent. I had to buy various tinned foods including Bacon Grill. Back then, I thought it was ok, but certainly not spectacular. These days, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

That made me very hungry Gareth! All of these "meat loaf" type things taste much better when fried, I often buy garlic sausage, which comes as a fat sausage cased in a plastic wrapper from the corner shops, which I slice into thick discs and fry.... delicious! They also do all kinds of other variations like turkey and beef, chicken and spices etc, which all taste wonderful when fried up. I just ignore the fact that it is ALL mechanically separated meat and probably contains animal arseholes.🤣

ASDA do a bacon grill as well. It's actually nicer than Spam
Never heard of this, but will seek some out to try. Thanks Gareth xx
Now you need to do an bacon grill comparison, This, vs morrisons, vs Asda vs Tulip (tesco) 👌😁
Benny Hill music 😂. You needed to play that and speed up your video with it. 😂. Funny as.

Had Bacon Grill as a kid 50 odd years ago, and still love it to this day, Mrs cannot even stand the smell. Still, that’s her loss.
Had luncheon meat & Spam as a child, fried slices with mash & peas-yummy x
Nice one mr Bald 🥓🥓🙈
We had 'Plumrose' Bacon grill when I was a kid (60 years ago) I never liked the smoke thing, but unsmoked was great.

It has the magic words in again: "Mechanically Separated". 8-)

The best tinned meats like this is by far the polish PEK brand. I found this brand to be flavourless, even spams lost its flavour these days.
