The fragrance you're struggling to name, lemongrass or lemon oil, is pandan. Pandan leaves are used to add aroma and flavor in a lot of Southeast Asian cuisines.
They also make a VERY delicious tea too!

I trained with Indonesia Mulawarman back in 2022 2023. Part of Pacific pathways. And i tell you their Mains, and those COOKIES! Are fantastic! Especially out in the jungle for extended times and needing a morale pick me up! Love your vids man!
Food aside, I just love how sleek and sexy this MRE looks in comparison to most others we've seen. The black packaging and font choice make it seem like more of a luxury ration than a soldier's ration.

It's kinda simple (for Indonesian ration standard) by design, since this ration is mainly being sent for raider/para-raider unit, which necessitates light and rapid movements with no intent to hold on to a location.

I think that Nasi Ayam Pandan Bagaskoro is the newest menu in the TNI (Indonesian Armed Forces) MRE list (since 2024), because i've never seen that before here in the Armed Forces communities.
In case you guys don't know what Pandan mean, it's a tropical plant with long, fragrant leaves that are used in cooking and other applications. It's also known as the screw pine tree.
Pandan leaves are used in cooking to add flavor to sweet and savory dishes.
They can be used to perfume rice and curries, or crushed and soaked to make flavorings and colorings.
Pandan leaves can also be used as a fragrant wrapping for baked or grilled foods.
Pandan is a popular ingredient in many South Asian and Southeast Asian dishes, including Thailand, Malaysian, and Indonesian dishes.
And what's the Bagaskoro part? I tried googling it trying to find the original menu, what region it comes from and all that, but all that's come up is the ration lol

"Bagas", which means strong, healthy, or sturdy.
"Koro" or "Skoro", which can mean light or sunlight.
Overall, Bagaskoro can be interpreted as "a strong sunlight" or "strength like the sun's rays."
That name is often used for males in Javanese culture, symbolizing someone full of spirit, strength, and radiance in life.

Yes, the package graphic design looks like toiletries for a high-end hotel or airline. The only downside is that it’s not very informative… not like “PRO-MILCH: Milk-based Nutritious Drink, Latte Flavor, Vitamin Enriched.”

Since independence in 1945, and despite a number of political, social, religious and ethnic issues - Indonesia has become a powerhouse in food technology. You only have to look at Indo-Mie to see that. They have a knack for making food palatable, portable and stable in a tropical environment. Despite its massive population, you don't read about people starving in Indonesia.
25 years ago I recall trying a range of Maggi-style foil, boil-in-the-tray foods from Prodan in Indonesia - sensational and there's still nothing like it. They're crap with anything pasta-like, but that's beside the point. Indonesia is a food culture and sets a very high bar when it comes to fresh and manufactured foods. Can't wait to see Steve review more Indon rations. My only question is - why didn't that ration contain at least 1 Indo-Mie instant mi goreng? So good.
No need for that bro...should the time comes when indo mie is needed during a crisis, it is readily available anywhere. If u run out of stock, as a close neighbour Malaysia will happily sent their stash.

Half of my family don't like indomie, the other half do. I'm in the former, it's just too salty and has that overtly strong taste. Personally prefer maggi and samyang but most of its flavors suck except 2 or 3.
I remember during my university volunteership in West Papua, the army commander donated 2 dozen sets of Naraga because it's expiring in 3 months. We kept them just in case our food supplies went low and also we don't want our friends to fight over these rations (since we were given 24 but we had 30 people) so we hid the rations from the rest of our team and only 6-7 people knew they even existed.
My friends and I devoured the cookies and powdered drinks in the first two weeks . I can still remember the overly rich milk taste (similar to baby milk) of the cookies and how it would made my day since we ate only plain rice or sago with a side salted fish nearly everyday. The rice (most of them are Mongolian Chicken dishes) were not really cooked through, to our liking at least, so we don't really like them and they smell like the cheap corned meat we get in the local convenience store.

As an Indonesian, I have tried many MRE variants, especially for the Indonesian Armed Forces. MRE Nagara Plus is specifically for education/field training, there are several types of MRE which are adapted for other activities, for example in combat operations, training, education, etc.

@@aeromatt pandan is like vanilla, it's added because of it's aroma. And yes, it's quite often paired with coconut. You can find cocopandan syrup here, usually colored red

ONE OF MY FAVORITE BREAKFASTS
Take a scoop of oatmeal (usually 1cup)
Add a packet of either hot chocolate or Carnation instant breakfast
Shake it and either add hot water or coffee depending on the flavor.
I dropped 60 lbs and wasn't hungry all day eating this for breakfast. Kept me going all day. Those drink packs look phenomenal.

It's a thing here in the states, not as popular as it once was. A powdered breakfast drink, in chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry flavors. Just add cold milk and stir. Supposed to have most of your vitamin requirements for a day.

Yes, natrium is salt; it's more precisely sodium, and it's an archaic synonym for the word, coming from an old Latin word. It's why the chemical symbol for sodium is Na, and why having too much or too little sodium in your blood is hypernatremia or hyponatremia, respectively. (Presenting to the emergency room…)
Potassium is K for a similar reason; it's from the word kalium. The etymology of both words is elliptical to the point of being downright byzantine.

I think that differences because Dutch language influence in Indonesia (Early college in Indonesia history taught by Dutch lecturer). AFAIK Natrium and Kalium used in European languages rather than Sodium and Potassium.
It's Natrium in (nearly all except English) Germanic languages and Slavic languages. It's Sodium in Romance languages.
It ain't ancient, they just stem from different places. The weird one is English taking romance words and stuffing them into a Germanic language.
@ikt32 The Latin word "natrium" comes from the term for the pits where dynastic Egyptians would harvest the salts used for mummification, if I remember correctly. In English, it's an archaism outside of very specific contexts because we dropped it in favor of sodium.
As for taking Latinate vocabulary and stuffing it into a Germanic language: you can blame the Normans for that. Norman French became the prestige language of the ruling class thanks to William the Conqueror and his invasion of England in 1066; it's why the animal is a cow but its meat is beef. And the Catholics, too, since it's because of them that Latin was the language of scholarship, including science, until German superseded it. It's because of mid-19th-century twits obsessed with Classical Latin that we're saddled with English teachers telling us we can't split infinitives or use double negatives for emphasis.

I'm actually surprised to find out there's a new TNI MRE from your video, never heard about it around military enthusiast groups so it's probably a new version rolled out while Prabowo was minister of defense last term
i'm guessing that oily coating for the main is probably partly to act as preservative so they can last longer than the previous version that have what basically is microwavable instant rice separate from the meats, that's more common in east asian MRE.
also i think those cookies probably are also substituting the old packed maltose cubes to improve troop morale by giving them more luxurious food item instead of efficient food cubes.

I never noticed that. He never begs for subscribers. He never goes over the top or does anything weird with the camera or editing. No fat. Simple, humble, informative, relaxing, apolitical. Just good content.
MREs have come a long way. I remember trying to join the military in 2005 before I was told my eyesight wasn't good enough. The guardsmen would joke about specific menus and say they wished there was a chow shop or cafeteria where they were assigned. I have not heard that from friends who serve now. Some of this actually looks like it would be pretty good and morale-boosting. Good stuff; thanks for what you do, Steve. Archiving foods, covering history, and showing us the greatness of old and new developments in food science.
Stuff like this is why I love foreign rations. They have such neat stuff in them. Always a nice way to start the day.
Actually the naraga mre is quite a new type and commonly distributed among the army nowadays .. army navy air force have their own style mre
And the naraga come with 2 version, 1 with cheese/chocolate cookies and the other one with kind of protein bar made from dried fruits, nuts oat flour

You're right, Steve, "gula" is sugar in Malay and Indonesian. "Garam" is salt, and "natrium" is sodium.

The main has pandan in it. The taste of pandan has been described as floral, sweet, grassy, as well as like vanilla. It often has a subtle flavour or scent. The recipe also has galangal which, in a cooked meal, tastes and smells similar to ginger. There's also coriander and other spices in it, too.
I wonder if the “garam” here is related to “garam masala,” a common spice blend in Indian food. Since “masala” basically means “spice blend,” maybe the term translates to “salty spice blend,” i.e. what you commonly use for savory dishes instead of sweet things like chai or rice pudding.

Steve, maybe the elusive flavour you were looking for was the pandan leaf? Pandan has a lot of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP). This is a volatile compound, that also appears in smaller amounts in aromatic/aged basmati rice. So not only does pandan taste good as it is, it really enhances rice dishes. 🍚

This ration looks like something you could eat so fast! That's amazing especially if you're in a combat situation and you need to eat fast and get back to fighting. It does seem like you could also savor it slowly with the complex flavors described.

There are at least two restaurants in Morris County, NJ that serve Pandan. I love the stuff! I usually go with the Pulut Pandan, which has ground shrimp. And I avoid shrimp, but it;s good enough to let me overcome my shrimp phobia.
