It's interesting they all consider Katee's role in BSG to be groundbreaking. What about all of the Star Trek series that featured women in commanding roles? Capt Janeway in Voyager from 95-2001. Star Trek DS9 Major Kira & Lt. Commander Dax from 93-99. Star Trek Next Gen Chief Medical Officer Crusher from 87-94. Commander Uhura on Original Series back in the 60s. People act like women weren't featured in any commanding roles in cinema past 3 years ago.

It was a meh movie at best. And if you think Brie Larson in Captain Marvel was the first strong female lead, you need to talk to Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carrie Fisher, etc... and, oh yeah, Katee Sackhoff and Mary McDonnell in Battlestar Galactica.

@@HalcyonCinema it was after the biggest marvel with an end credit scene to give it a boost and before endgame so people felt they had to see it or miss something, marvel studios is smart but that movie was about as good as thor 2 , if u like it great..🤔

Captain Marvel was not portrayed as a strong female...she was ACTING like a strong female. BIG difference. i.e. Batwoman. It's amazing how Wonder Woman is the only one to get it right so far.
That's a matter of opinion. Imho Wonder Woman is a typical example of throwing females a bone while giving the male audience a huge tea spoon of sugar so that the "feminism" (which boils down to some posing) goes down. Meanwhile Captain Marvel makes no effort whatsoever to appease anyone, it speaks to the female experience in a way few other movies do. If someone likes Wonder Woman better, fine, to each their own. But don't DARE to tell me what is feminist and what isn't. Based on your screen name, it is really not for you to decide.
@@swanpride I can see your a highly intelligent individual judging people's intent base on screen names. I didn't mention anything about feminism; that's what YOU wanted to see. Throwing females a bone: Why don't you tell that to Patty Jenkins, she must be sexist pig then. And by the way, I can speak to whatever I want. It's not for YOU to decide either.
@@swanpride No. It's not a question of "deciding". Stop using this word like there's some objective truth to be decided upon, or some female-exclusive right to "decide" how things are. The quality of a fictional character is a matter of opinion (as you said yourself), and everyone is entitled to having one. So sorry, but yes, men are allowed to have an opinion on female characters.
The original post wasn't about voicing an opinion. It was about selling an opinion as a fact. There is a difference between saying "I don't feel inspired by this character" and claiming "this character isn't strong at all". Especially when you don't even bring forward an argument for said opinion.
I would really love to see her in the MCU, Captain Marvel would've been great for her but seeing as that's taken I've been brain storming a few characters for her to play. Nova, a herald of Galactus would be cool.
And just because it's been done before, doesn't mean that it's prevalent for the youth of present or past. Kids don't watch tv, they watch their phones or computers and that stuff isn't our there available for these kids.
Why does everyone pretend like Wonder Woman wasn't a thing long before Captain Marvel ? Wonder Woman in the comics first appeared in *1941.* Captain Marvel wasn't created until 1967. As for live-action, there was a Wonder Woman movie in 1974, a Wonder Woman TV show in 1975, and the recent Wonder Woman film in 2017. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel didn't get an adaptation until 2019. How are we still acting like she's the first female superhero ?
Because Disney is the emperor and they are looking to be storm troopers. That or they are just dumb because as a horror lover most of the “heroes” of those films are women. They even have a name for it. “Final girl”. Nancy Thompson was a fricking amazing lead who literally took on a demonic serial killer and won! Her traps and mocking Freddy are so great. Heather you were my hero and I’m not a girl! Thanks for being amazing and not just woke!
Notice how she answered the question, without actually answering it. Very smooth. Because if she said she loved Brie Larson in it, she knows we'd all be able to tell she was lying.
At least Katee Sackhoff gets it... strong females are great when they don’t need to advertise the fact that they’re female. They didn’t need to put “Just a Girl” into Battlestar Galactica’s soundtrack while she’s flying around shooting down Cylons to make a point.
I really like Brie Larson, fucking killed it in Room, and even her character in Scott Pilgrim had more dimension but unfortunately Captain Marvel just wasn't it. Total miscast.
Marvel portray of Captain Marvel was just like the Comics ,Captain Marvel was an arrogant more militarized ruthless prick in the Comics .So she is Kind of an Anti Hero like Deadpool with more Militarized version of it ,let just say Captain Marvel is another Version of Nick Fury with Super power .
Open Mind they just need to work on making her more sympathetic and stick with an angle for her character. Captain Marvel felt confused about what the film wanted her to be.
@@ShawnWeeded510 Problem was , Movie Captain Marvel was filmed after End game ,So with two directors it was a mess as they didn't have the time to actually make a transition of the character .
I feel After Captain Ameria & Tony stark is gone they will still need two rival group in Next Phase of Avenger .Captain Marvel will deliver that rivalry most probably against Black Widow group .
To be honest thats one reason I loved the movie cause at the end of the day it was accurate. If its not your thing it just isnt. But the whole pretending the reason you hate it is feminism is becoming a played out excuse.
Vish Wah her big screen performances they aren’t leading movie performances to me. They are supporting movie roles. She was pretty bad in that Riddick film
If you have to be over the top in saying/acting how cool and strong you are, sorry to break it to you, you aren't. Not trying to be mean, I am just tired of this trope with women being portrayed this way.
2:32 "Battlestar never acknowledged the fact that Starbuck was a woman, ever. She just was.". This is where today tv series and movies fail with introducing female characters.
"It wasn't acknowledged that Starbuck was a woman". Exactly. That's the whole point. No one acknowledged Ripley was a woman in Alien. When you create great characters, the gender doesn't matter.
Lol that SJW non-sense needs to stop. Back when I was a kid we had tons of women characters. They just didn't spend their time patting each other in the back, telling each other how strong they are, "despite" their condition of being a woman. Now we have lame characters who do horrible stuff for which they never face any consequences. Oh, and you should have at least one interaction with a creepy man that would never happen in real life, so that you can show him how strong you are. You can apply that method to so many movies and shows now.
I notice how she skillfully sidestepped saying that the movie itself was a letdown by saying that she likes seeing strong women in film. Loved her later comment about how BSG did strong woman on screen better than Marvel. Feminism is fine, toxic feminism is just toxic to everyone.
She was born in 1980 alien came out in 1979 so she grew up with or had the opportunity to grow up with Lieutenant Ellen Ripley terminator came out on 84 so again she had the opportunity
She may be young, 77' Charles's Angels, Police Woman, Super heroes Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter, Cathy Lee Crosby) ISIS (Google 70's tv show) the Bionic Woman, 80's Supergirl, 90's Buffy, Xena in Film Ripley's not a superhero but ok yeah Sarah Connor 2 huge franchise heroines.
She hit the nail ON THE HEAD!! They didn’t even mention that “Starbuck is a woman” on the show! She just ....”was”. She was a bad@$$ from get go. Contrast that to the Batwoman trailers... the theme song even says “I’m a woman” for gosh sakes and she makes mention of it too many times. Just tell the story and enough with hitting the audience over the head with “it’s a woman now”! Just tell the story and show us strong women, we don’t need to be constantly “told.”
Alien came way before die hard come on ladies, this is just gender appropriation as always, it's a shame too because Katie would have blown the roof off that role and Brie just did not...
After watching Another Life, Katee Sachoff is not a leading actor, she's better as a supporting actor. I don't think she has the chops to lead a franchise. Still though, I would have picked her well over Brie Larson any day for Captain Marvel. Brie should hand back that Oscar, we all know Jacob Tremblay was the true star performer in Room and deserving of that award.
Katie hits the nail with a 10 ton sledge right there. Stop beating the audience over the head with it. Just tell a compelling story and SHOW me why she is the baddest ass lady in the whole galaxy. Don’t be friggin Supergirl.
I love Katee, but what the heck did she just say? "When i grew up, there where no female superheroes...// and then came Sigourney Weaver". ...Dude, Alien came out 1979, how old is this girl?
Starbucks did great because she was an awesome addition and wasn’t the center piece. Movies with strong female leads at the center don’t do so well and the tough girl/girl boss thing has been pushed on us so hard that men aren’t going to see movies anymore. Loved Starbuck but if the show was only about her it wouldn’t have been
wow Katie has those arms. Not an ounce of fat. I mean women have some at least, but she has none. Very unique. And also muscles I've never seen on a woman
"There weren't female superheroes..."-Ms. Sackhoff. Did IQs suddenly decline while I was away?" Ellen Ripley. Tropes aside, female superheroes have always existed in every entertainment format, particularly in Sci-Fi and Action genres. Contemporarily, that was the only option writers could get their stories published. That all but changed for the better in 1966 "The Cage"-Star Tek, starting a new era of female and, by extension, minority protagonists and antagonists in every form and genre. Her comments are not only false but incredibly ignorant, if not insulting. Ms. Sackhoff, who is part of my generation (Gen X), should take the time to reevaluate her comments and take a trip down [modern] memory lane. Nichelle Nichols, Pam Grier, Teresa Graves, Carrie Fisher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Linda Carter, Angie Dickson, Sigourney Weaver, Helen Slater, Linda Hamilton, and the entire cast of the Original BSG, to name a few, all preceded her appearance in BSG. In many cases, their roles differed from the male lead(s). Some supportive, but uncharacteristically so, in fact groundbreaking. But in all cases, their characters were the gold standard for Female Action heroines. So much so that their portrayals changed conventional views of women in so-called male only roles in both drama and real life. Starting at a very young age I had my own role-model that buck the system both as an multi-ethnic minority and as a women. My mother, who was a women of color of African and Indigioues decent broke down color and gender barriers in the late 1960s and early 1980s in historically backward Okhahoma. I witnessed her struggles first hand in and out of the office. For me it was welcoming to witness many of the aforementioned female heroines on the big and small screen on a near daily basis (than whatever for re-runs) for most of my early life to the present. What is it with Hollywood today? Have they forgotten the past or refuse to acknowledge it. Bucking the status quo may not have been the impetus for the many [female] Sci Fi and Action character's creations, but those actors changed the world with their performances. Ms. Sackhoff was only offered her role, due to their historical sacrifices, talents, skills, and a heap of intestinal fortune. She is the byproduct of their professionalism, and for her to dismiss, if not exclude, those who paved the way for her career regardless of genre is disheartening, to say the least. Shame... For the record, I do not agree with the anti-SJWs who have plagued the internet with their anti-woke agendas. From DS9 to ST Discovery to the latest Star Wars offerings , these 'fanboys' (and they are boys) seem to suffer from the same thing that Ms. Sackhoff and others within the 'current industry' are currently afflicted with amnesia. They seem to forget their anti-women, anti-minority, and anti-liberal take on these classic shows is an insult to the genres. These genres are and have always been WOKE. what I do have a problem with is the poor casting, writing, and direction. Moving on. Yes, the series was centered around Kirk, but his best friends consisted of a mixed-race man and a charming good old boy who is a closeted but still charming human supremacist. Foreign and familiar. Unique and all too human. To opposites of the same coin. Both characters, Spock and McCoy, are the last vestiges of alienation and fear that this setting must conquer. In the background, the supporting characters result what can happen if one recognizes that more unites us than separates us. Human men and women of different beliefs and ethnic backgrounds, united in equality. In other words, a fellowship. Yes, Luke was the lead in the space opera, but within the story, we learn that he is considered expendable by his male/mentor counterparts, who consider his sister, a woman, more likely to succeed in "kicking ass" if he couldn't. The premise is "The girl is TOUGHER than the boy." Yes, Dr. Banner is super intelligent, and his alter ego is super powerful, but his character could not deny the devotion and will of Betty Ross, an extraordinary lady. Would you like me to go on? That being said, Ms. Sackhoff is not a bad actor; I believe she is a decent actor and best suited for roles that complement her innate personality. In other words, she has yet to have the best lens to shine like a Basestar exploding. If I were the casting director, I would request, no INSIST she play in these. Pardon my hubris. For years [decades], I have wondered why Dickey Chappelle has never had a big-screen bio. Ms. Sackhoff would be perfect for the role. Her range would be even more highlighted as Anna Sorkin in a multi-episode movie. Her piece de resistance, her magnum opus, would be portraying Elizabeth Holmes if not Viola Liuzzo.
Many males of my generation were privileged (should have been required) to see female characters in a vastly different light. My "go-to momma" moment from Hollywood was the Poseiden Adventure. Virtually every female character appears as a female trope. As the movie progresses, we encounter their unique personalities. In retrospect, if you view the movie again, you realize they are the same parts of one female character: fear, horror, rage, disappointment, faith, insecurity, love, and courage. Mrs. Rossen was my favorite character in the movie. She whinny, ponderous, overbearing, overweight, tiresome, and the HERO who saved them all. When she volunteered to take the dive, she never backed down, never wavered, and never showed the slightest hesitation to save not only herself, but her devoted husband, and complete strangers. Her new and extended family. That sounds like a superhero to me. It was a shock to see her step up to the plate, but when she did, and we saw her navigate the confines of the inner wreckage and help guide the other survivors to safety, like a dophin with the courage of like shark and the grace of a queen-only to die in the Preacher's arms, it became, even more, a shock to realise she was gone. She wasn't supposed to die! NOT MRS. ROSSEN!!! Not the OUR adopted 'angel". Not the hero... She's not the male lead, she's not the strong guy, she's not the young doeeyed teenage girl or the foolishly brave boy, she was the annoying fat old lady! I saw that movie in the drive-in when I was a very young child, and as the years passed, unfortunately, I noticed that in my co-workers, my fellow soldiers who, like me, were US Army Combat Medical Specialists. I still choke up, whenever I watch that scene. Maybe not as much when I was in my youth, but it still hurts, even though it's fiction. Does her character fit the contemporary role of science fiction/action heroine? No. Did she then. No. But she was no less a hero in my book and her on screen courage lives some 50+ years later. Move over, superman, take a break, Spider-Man, the lady had you beat. To Belle Rosen, my first [fictional] hero and love...
Linda Carter was a super heroe in the 70s, so was Electro Woman and Dina Girl, etc. Strong woman, Bruce Willis?? Because in real life women can't do what men can. So to say something that little girls can aspire is nuts! Maybe you mean, that little girls can act in movies like they can do something they can't in real life? Ok, I understand now.
I'm actually glad Katee didn't get Captain Marvel. That movie was so pandering that she would've caught just as much shit as Brie Larson is. Not to mention she'd have to deal with the same BS talking points in every interview. It retroactively would have made people hate Starbuck, I guarantee that.

This is why I honestly think the 2000s were some of the best times for kids in terms of having diverse role models: Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Generator Rex, Ben 10, Power Rangers, American Dragon: Jake Long, Jimmy Neutron, Samurai Jack, Powerpuff Girls, Gravity Falls, etc.
@What About its half their fault. It's 2019 where if you're a woman you are automatically deemed a hero for simply being a woman. It's fucked
People act like that because they haven't seen them because they're not in the media focus anymore.
And you act like all those examples aren't from the same franchise 😛
What About
Oh long kiss goodnight! I know what I’m watching later on! I forgot the name of that movie. I called it 9-11 with gena Davis! Cause in the movie they talk about blowing up the WTC and blaming muslims😱😱
I still remember the old days when they were so sure of who was gonna be WonderWoman and Captain Marvel
I love how in most interviews when a women ask what did you think of that captain marvel movie. Seems like they all say. “ oh it was so great to see a strong women on film or I was pumped up to see her “. But they never talk about if the movie was good or not lol. Cause this movie was not all that good. But pay attention when you see a woman asked about it
It was a meh movie at best.
Amen!
She never truly answered the question about what she thought about the movie.
Cause she knows brie larson sucks. She's just too classy to say so.
@Orn Gorn But she did tow the line about it great to see a strong, female character which was disappointing to me.

Not sure how anyone can say that Brie Larson inspired them in Captain Marvel and keep a straight face. She shouldn’t even be mentioned with characters like Ripley and Sarah Conner.
I love Black Widow, Wonder Woman & General Organa - all awesome Strong Women in Films...Captain Marvel, not a fan!
Little girls have something to aspire to ? What about Wonder Woman, Alita, Sarah Connor, Riply ?
I'm really hoping Capt Marvel 2 has some bad ass fight scenes. That's all that was missing from 1 imo.

@@HalcyonCinema it was after the biggest marvel with an end credit scene to give it a boost and before endgame so people felt they had to see it or miss something, marvel studios is smart but that movie was about as good as thor 2 , if u like it great..🤔
@@fredrickgarrettsr2632 having a boost from Infinity War does not guarantee a billion. Ant Man and the wasp came directly after Infinity War IN THE SAME YEAR but didn't even reach 700 million, so ur point is invalid. As to ur opinion about it being as good as Thor 2, u are entitled to it, but people who watched the movie disagree, as shown by its A Cinenscore. Brie Larson has also benefited from the hate and it has only boosted her popularity. Everyone can have their opinions, but the numbers don't lie: it was a resounding success despite the naysayers saying they wouldn't watch it or it was crap.
Not your intention...you gender. Don't you think that it is on females to decide which characters are "strong" and inspiring and which aren't?
Every time I see her all I think of is Battlestar Galactica great show
I would really love to see her in the MCU, Captain Marvel would've been great for her but seeing as that's taken I've been brain storming a few characters for her to play. Nova, a herald of Galactus would be cool.
"I wanted to be Bruce Willis because there weren't female super heros." Linda Carter was a female super hero before you were born.
I disagree with the lying part.
At least Katee Sackhoff gets it... strong females are great when they don’t need to advertise the fact that they’re female. They didn’t need to put “Just a Girl” into Battlestar Galactica’s soundtrack while she’s flying around shooting down Cylons to make a point.
I see there are still People who say Brie Larson was amazing in captain Marvel.
Sometimes I think we are in the twilight zone.
She did pretty good bro stop.

I really like Brie Larson, fucking killed it in Room, and even her character in Scott Pilgrim had more dimension but unfortunately Captain Marvel just wasn't it. Total miscast.

Katee is a national treasure, and I’m not even American.
Except she’s not portrayed or sold that way. If she was a prick in the movie then someone would have to treat her like one. That’s how movies work.

She is great on the new Netflix sci fi show.
Unfortunately, they didn't get the green light for season 2.
I want Kathryn Winnick in the MCU please, she kicks ass literally
Lol that SJW non-sense needs to stop. Back when I was a kid we had tons of women characters. They just didn't spend their time patting each other in the back, telling each other how strong they are, "despite" their condition of being a woman. Now we have lame characters who do horrible stuff for which they never face any consequences. Oh, and you should have at least one interaction with a creepy man that would never happen in real life, so that you can show him how strong you are. You can apply that method to so many movies and shows now.
Starbuck as Captain Marvel would have been awesome.
wonderwoman....allll of them were strong women but didnt need to say it
Katee Sackhoff would've been a FANTASTIC Captain Marvel! Damn it!

She may be young, 77' Charles's Angels, Police Woman, Super heroes Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter, Cathy Lee Crosby) ISIS (Google 70's tv show) the Bionic Woman, 80's Supergirl, 90's Buffy, Xena in Film Ripley's not a superhero but ok yeah Sarah Connor 2 huge franchise heroines.
The gender swaps in BSG worked because they weren't shoved down everyone's throat. The characters had flaws and depth.
Katee Sackhoff should've been Captain Marvel a role she was born to play.
Uh.. Dude there was a huge fan rage over it before the show was even lit. Just look up what actually happened.
Brie is really really unlikeable so that hurts captain marvel
Katee for Moondragon ..........
What could have been. Marvel fucked this up. But... we had Sigorney Weaver in 1979.
I liked Katee as Bo Katan
Alien came way before die hard come on ladies, this is just gender appropriation as always, it's a shame too because Katie would have blown the roof off that role and Brie just did not...
Captain Marvel was brilliant but Katee should definitely be in marvel she’s a legend.
She is not a legend...starbuck was awesome, but legend???
If Brie Larson only had a fraction of Katie Sackhoff's humility...
and talent.
I love this woman!
Charlies Angels, Wonder Woman, Super Girl, Bionic Woman,
Irony is, she was on a Bionic Woman show.
Another Life has terrible writing. It doesn't make anyone look good.
She dodged a serious bullet not being cast as Captain Marvel. No actress could have survived that cringe moment in endgame.
The premise is "The girl is TOUGHER than the boy."
Yes, Dr.
By the way, Shelly Winters [Belle Rosen} insisted she perform her stunts!
Hold on what about that show andromeda the show was all female except for kevin sorbo
True. But we don’t bring up really bad shows.
Brie is an Oscar winning movie actress - was a given she was gonna get the role....
Sigourney Weaver came out before Bruce Willis, Katee!
I'm actually glad Katee didn't get Captain Marvel. That movie was so pandering that she would've caught just as much shit as Brie Larson is. Not to mention she'd have to deal with the same BS talking points in every interview. It retroactively would have made people hate Starbuck, I guarantee that.

A strong person is someone who doesn't need to constantly convince people of their strength. This is why so many strong female characters are ignored, and the ones that only help to segregate further are only strong because people say they are.
