Many thanks for your tips. I have found them really useful as I am an 80 year old learner here in Northern Ireland. Found it really helpful when I tried playing along with the outdoor groups. Everybody was having so much fun. I even told a fiend about your teaching and how well thngs were explained. Looking forward to more videos. 🙂
They're all great tips but keeping a uke handy is a huge one! I live in an area where it's necessary to humidify wooden instruments half the year, so I was worried about leaving a uke out of its case. Having a Nova U made such a huge difference for me because it can sit out all the time without any problems! I love my wooden ukes, but as you said, if you have to go into another room, closet, open a case, fish out a humidifier and then retune, you play less frequently. The Nova U gets played multiple times a day and even during TV commercials.
Brilliant idea using the Nova because yes, I can imagine the humidity being an issue and yes, being able to just grab an instrument makes a HUGE difference. Loved reading this! 😎
You're very welcome, yes I hadn't really thought about the usefulness for other instruments. I shall try and do a bass version at some point in the future but glad you enjoyed. Thanks
Wow! Thank you so much teacher! I have been learning ukulele during this pandemic to play alongs. You have reassured me of some of what I am doing like never worry about what other people may care or not 😅😅 I am really enjoying this and must say that it has kept my sanity going. Towards worse, I am not entirely sure LOL!!!
Hello, I have just started to play the ukulele(Bariton)at the age of 67!:))I practice every day ,but I find it hard to manage the F.Chord yet, my old fingers wont listen to me!!I like your videos,Greetings from Spain
Good luck with your playing and great to hear you are enjoying the baritone. I believe the F chord on the baritone is the same shape as the Bb chord on the uke so maybe this video will help, I hope so. ua-cam.com/video/f68_B23ofRU/v-deo.html
@@UkuleleWales The F-Chord is my Darth vader:))))Meanwhile I have got 2 Baritons, one of them I have tuned in GCEA(LOW G)and with that tuning -the E-chord is giving me a nighmare:))but I practice every day for an hour, making progress very slowly, still ,I wont give up. no chance-Greetings from Jerez
Thanks for these tips, Rachel. We have just arrived in England from Canada for The Holidays. Naturally, we could not bring our ukes but a friend has loaned me his soprano as of last night! I now look forward to following your videos whilst here. Thx so much.
Soory it's been a while Norm, maybe still on holiday, if so hope you are enjoying, if you are home I hope it all went well. Where are you / were you visiting?
@@UkuleleWales great to hear from you. We are in the East Midlands, East Leake village near Loughborough. Have already had Covid in this household but not we Canadians! I have tried to practise with your videos for about an hour each day. Thank you for such great material ... and HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳
If people ask me to play for them I'll say no I only play for a paying audience, that's my excuse Ha Ha. I'll say it again you are by far the best on UA-cam you explain everything perfectly even for a old git like me. But I am having fun
i will need to buy a tenor uke because i'm using a baritone now with DGBE tuning. I like the guitar lower sound.I'm working with getting to know some of the baritone chords but the chords on tenor seem easier.I will get there.
I am thankful this came on after your 2nd "show us your ukes" (not nukes) series and really happy about this beginner info video! I like beginner videos since I think there always might be something that I missed so I dont mind watching them at all
Thanks Rachel you seem to be a natural teacher (I an sure you must have put in a lot of time and effort though!). Some really useful tips I picked up, even though I have been playing a little over a year this video was really useful to a slow learner. One of your previous videos was a game changer for me with the Bm chord just moving 1 string over from Em, so thankful you posted it.
Great collection, thank you so much for it. (I'd say it was your most helpful video ever, except that is up to what individuals need and I hadn't seen all of yours...)
Thank You David, I've used Dr Uke but haven't heard of the other one so I'll check it out. Also, I did manage to see your first post from my notifications (I think UA-cam deletes comments with links) so I googled it, looks like a great resource of all kinds of music - Thanks
Another fabulous video Rachel. I wish I had known some of those tips when I first started (and to be honest - some are very handy tips even now that I've been playing for four years+). Keep up the marvellous work our Ukualian Cymreig rhyfeddol:)
Very helpful Rachel, thank you. Now, where did you get that wonderful t-shirt from...I love it! Those are my types of colours. Also great seeing your wonderful collection of instruments of course. I'm very frustrated this last week as I haven't been able to play as I have hurt my strumming arm/shoulder. I'm going to group tomo though even if it means I can only sing..I just love my group. Have a great week. x
Thanks Sue :-) Gutted to hear you have hurt your shoulder, take it easy, don't rush into playing BUT yes, get to uke group as that will cheer you up. ;-) Yes, the t-shirt is one of my favs too, can't claim credit for this fab design but I can certainly point you in the right direction. www.redbubble.com/i/t-shirt/Ukulele-Terminology-Commonly-Used-Musicians-Terms-by-funnyguy/40266586.IJ6L0
Just something else. I have bought on Amazon a book called The Ukulele Chord Bible by Tobe A Richard's. It has 2160 chords for GCEA uke but there is also a DGBE one too. Weirdo chords like 11th's and 13th's, slash chords and more.
Sorry I don't want to be a nuisance it's the chords I'm struggling with I even bought a finger exerciser thingy ma jig. My ring finger and the next finger and finger all move at the same time. It's doing my head in. I'm left-handed. Might try right handed. ( oh and I'm not being rude )
Never a nuisance! It might be worth trying a right handed, I know many LH players play RH but also, it does take time to get your fingers working independantly, especially if you are not used to playing chords. Take your time and practice little and often, the muscle memory will happen.
Cyngor doeth - It's not as accurate as good play along video but I swear I wouldn't be able to play as many songs as I can if it wasn't for Chordify. You can throw any UA-cam video into it and it'll have a stab working out the chords.
Diolch Geth. Have to admit, I have never really used to chordify, maybe I should try it? I do always manage to work out the chords but it does shock me sometimes how wrong they are!
@@UkuleleWales 100%, identifying chords by ear is a incredibly useful skill. That said I like Chordify as it's quite frankly quicker than my ears. And while it's not 100% accurate I find it gives me a useful starting point to work things out. There's quite a few songs in my videos that I wouldn't have been able to cover without Chordify.
Hi. I worry about other people they can all play the ukulele + guitar. And I can't I wish somebody could hypnotize me like they do for smokers so I could play. This will make you laugh I can play a ( KAZOO ) like Punch and Judy

Always nice to have a Ukulele Wales video. It’s the highlight of the week. 😀

Speed tip was great… Didn’t know that. What a game changer.. Thank you! You are. An Inspiration!!!
Glad it was helpful and Thanks for the lovely comment. 😊
Billed as a ukulele lesson but so much of this is true whatever you play. Particularly like the quote at the end. Thank you Rachel

Thank You Alan, glad you enjoyed. I'm sure some of the children do but probably not all! LOL

Need to keep it up until I do them all by default.
Thank you.

Thanks a lot. I'm from Bangladesh. I have a question. That is How many millimeters is the distance of the strings from the fretboard?
