RoJoBe Music ukulele string action adjustment

This Tenor ukulele belongs to one of my students. She's progressing very well but is struggling with some of the fretting. It's not anything she is doing wrong, the action is too high. So in this video I lower the action at the nut and the saddle, actually I end up replacing the plastic saddle with one made of bone. Much better

I had great success using plastic playing cards as a gauge between the fret and the string. The distance of the string to the neck became immaterial . John. C

Re: The Nut.
I don’t understand why people don’t just knock off the nut and sand the bottom down instead of using special files? (The stings should sit at the height of a fret wire as if it were a fret wire.) The pressure of the strings (at the nut) should hold it back on, but use a bit of glue to keep it from moving from side to side.

I've done literally hundreds of string action adjustments on countless different instruments and i can tell you this; every job is different and there are always several different ways to do each one. Sometimes i will sand the bottom, sometimes i will file the slots and sometimes i will make an entirely new nut from scratch. It all depends on what each instrument requires and i will base my decision on experience.

don't you think you should have checked the height before you loosened the strings?

I've probably set up over 1000 instruments. I've got a fair idea what I'm doing
