Owner of a beautiful white male with pale green eyes. I adopted him from the vet hospital I worked for at one week old, anticipating he would be deaf. He can hear just fine. Thank you for making this condition known to your readers with strategies to help cope with their condition.

My one year old kitten is white with blue eyes and deaf. He is my best friend! He knows a few signs and loves going for walks on his harness every day. I found that he is very treat motivated and very routine oriented and this has helped a ton with our training and communication. Most people cannot even tell that he is deaf as he "listens" better than most dogs and people do! He is the absolute light of my life. Thank you for the informative video. I was very nervous when I adopted him because I've never had a deaf cat before, but anyone considering should know that with patience and consistency, caring for a deaf kitty is not only very manageable but extremely rewarding too.

We had a foster cat a year ago. A gorgeous white cat with one blue and one gold eye. Totally deaf in both ears. He was the nicest cat, would have loved to have kept him. He got along just fine so long as, like you say, you gave him cues he could pick up on. I'd also sometimes hold a bowl of yummy cat food under his nose while he was sleeping. Nothing was wrong with his nose. He went to a wonderful home and is well taken care of. But I still miss him.

I had a white cat with one blue eye and one brown eye .Blue eye was blind. He was partially deaf as a kitten but became completely deaf when he grew old He was the most loving cat ive ever had.His deafness was never a problem. He died at the ripe old age of 17.Right now I have another white cat who is a pure bred Persian. He is one and half years old.He is completely deaf. His previous owners abandoned him cause he is deaf.ive had him for an year now.I don't have any communication problem. We totally understand each other.I have ten other cats and he has adjusted remarkably well with them. His name is Ghostie. He is extremely playful and mischievous.I constantly talk to him and he understands what iam saying although he cant hear my voice. We have a special kind of communication based on unconditional love. I blink my eyes slowly and he comes running to me.I have another cat who is blind.but he is as normal as my other cats. Love is all that matters.

I was going to name my deaf white cat Ghost but then went with Milk, and then a few months later adopted another stray and he is called Muffin. Always time for some Milk and Muffin.

I had a solid white female cat from 3 weeks of age til she was seventeen years old & then she went to cat heaven. She was a beautiful baby girl & very loveable she was a momma's baby for sure later n life she became my daughter's friend ( after always being @ odds with her ) when she passed she was in the bed right beside me. She loved her momma so much.

I had a beautiful all white blue eyed cat for 5yrs. She wasn't deaf but I think she was sterile. We tried to keep her indoors but she would get out and disappear for a day or two but never got pregnant thank God. She passed away from an intestinal infection.

I have 2 wee little 4-5 week old tiger with blue eyes and a pure white with blue eyes…..I’m 99% sure she’s deaf😢 she’s the sweetest thing ever . The yellow tiger is independent and ornery. The white is quite and she wants to sit on me most of the time. The momma was killed in the streets in town. I’m so glad we adopted 2 of them and got them eating and finally drinking on their own. I hope I can do this deaf baby right ❤ so I’m researching everything I can. Thank you for your info

I had an aunt who had a lot of white cats with yellow eyes and one had blue and yellow eyes. She never said any of them were deaf, they all seemed to be a bit crazy because they weren't used to strangers and would always run and hide when you came around.

Thanks for the informative video. I was not aware of this problem with white cats. I have had five white cats over the past few years. Never actually liked cats, but I have taken to the white ones. One of my cats was deaf. We noticed it when he was only a few weeks old. He unfortunately roamed away at around one year old, and we never saw him again. Another of my cats had an accident while playing, and went blind in a matter of a few hours. Everybody said we should put him down, but he adjusted very well, and very few people would even have known he was blind. My present cat is his brother. He has a blue and a green eye. He seems to be perfect in the hearing department. We live on a farm and he spends most his day in the bush and outside. Comes and goes until late at night. Very alert to his surroundings. The other day I watched him tracking a mole above ground and waiting for the mole to pop his head out the hole. His name is Luna, and I love him to bits.

i have a white blue eyed devon rex who is coming on 3 years old. i don't have any advice to offer, but she's remarkably aware of her surroundings; she can be sleeping soundly my closet, and whenever i bring food into my room she'll come jumping out within a minute, and then jump onto my desk because i can't help but share any meat i have with her. most of the time i forget she's even deaf until she finds a good hiding spot and i go looking for her.

A beautiful white cat decided she wanted to live with us.She was deaf. She had a very loud meow because she couldn't hear how loud she was but it was a meow just like our other 2 cats only x10 louder. She had a very keen sense of smell and would often be the first to the bowls at meal times. If not, she'd jump into action when she saw the other 2 cats running for their food.
She was a beautiful, affectionate girl and I'm so glad she chose us to be her forever home.
Thanks for all your cat videos and I like your unique voice. You sound so natural and it's like we're all listening to you and your knowledge of cats at a friendly BBQ.

Can relate to that loudness. I did wonder if deafness was the reason she was so loud. When she gets going it sounds like i'm killing her.

I had a white stray for 12 years. He wasn't deaf but ended up a diabetic. He passed in November 2018. A thoroughly beautiful boy. 😍 a month later I went to cat shelter and adopted a female white kitty. She is our happy kitty. The amount of love we are given is amazing. I have a thinkg for our white kitties so far none with W gene. Thanks 😊

I had heard somewhere that blue eyed cats are more likely to go blind than cats with the more common green or gold eyes. Any truth to that rumor? I'm concerned about the chance of it happening to my senior cat.

I never knew this! Great material as usual! I have two female cats one is mostly white with brown face and couple of brown patches the one on her lower back looks like a ❤️ but man oh man she’s a handful! Does not listen at all, doesn’t like other cats and other things much to my chagrin! The other is white and black and a total sweetheart! Not sure if anything that you mentioned has a remote chance of their vast difference in temperament. Always great to see your videos!

We have a all white cat with green eyes adopted from a shelter. I didn't know anything about some of them being deaf. She can hear fine, but even if she couldn't hear, I wouldn't trade her for anything.

We had one lovely Cloudy Mac Cloud, who died young of a congenital heart defect. A lovely, dear little guy who never really got a chance. We suspectinbreeding might have led to both the coloring and the heart issues (he was given to us bya local farmer, born and bred in a barn) but no hearing problems we knew of.

    tracking collars.
bertie is my gorgeous baby boy. he’s around 3 now and is a deaf and fluffy white cat with pale green eyes. he’s not lacking in any area of life and gets lots of attention. the main problem is we live in the countryside and his main goal in life is to be a wild cat. whenever there’s a door or window left open he’s already racing out of it to hide in bushes, climb trees like a maniac and frolic around fields- which would be fine for a regular cat but with him being deaf our biggest fear is him being run over on the road because he can’t hear the cars and tractors.
we kept him inside as much as possible as a kitten and introduced him to the outside world with a leash and harness after a few months. it was never enough though and he craved freedom. we got him a big cage outside so that he could climb a bit, watch birds, do his business outside and just be closer to nature but that also didn’t stop his need for roaming.
the absolute best thing is when we got him a tracking collar. we now are able to let him outside on his own and know where he is whenever we want. it makes it so much easier to find him to bring him back inside when necessary, and he’s learned to always come back to doors or windows when he wants to come back inside. only downside is him getting his beautiful coat filthy dirty and bringing mucky paws inside the house- but a bath and blow dry every now and then is good for his grooming anyways.

I have a white Persian kitten with blue eyes and she is completely deaf. 😭 i realize after it slept and i would make loud sounds it did not flinch. Poor baby, she loves licking my fingers and licks my nose early in the morning. Finding that it's deaf broke my heart.

I bought a white cat with Heterochromic eyes last week. I felt something was wrong because she was not very attentive to sounds. But after a week i am convinced that she is deaf. Will go to the vet for confirmation. My heart broke after realising this. 😭😭

While I've never had a white cat, I do have some experiences that pertain to the subject, at least in part. My family had a deaf German Shepherd, and we stumbled on using the back porch light to call him when he was outside at night. A couple of on and off flicks, and Mikey came without fail. The second is that, at least in the animal world, the gene for white color has some pretty odd effects. In horses, while there are many perfectly healthy white ones, a white baby born of two overo pinto parents always will die. In fact, the condition is called "lethal white." Instead of deafness, this particular white gene combo causes their intestines to end in a blind sac. Pretty horrific, if you ask me, and this is why people in the know never breed two overos. Incidentally, one is sufficient to pass on the color pattern, although it isnt a certainty, and even if the baby is a solid color other than white, at least you have a live foal.
