Thanks for this video. I have the same style carb on my 1981 18hp mercury. I did get a rebuild kit and changed all the gaskets and the diaphragm . I am excited to give it a try this spring, thanks again for your help!
I have the 83 version. I need to know the choke on it the marking are all worn off. Would you be willing to make a quick video going over the knob on the motor the circular one please.
I didn’t make any adjustments to the float since it’s made out of plastic I don’t believe adjustments are possible. If the float is warped you might just want to replace it.
Hallo Gute Arbeit!!! Ich habe einen 18 Ps Mercury von 1982. Angeblich sollen Sie vom Hubraum gleich sein. Also 18 /20/25 Ps , nur der Vergaser und der Auspuff waren je nach Ausführung anders . Stimmt das ? Danke
@rainerg2226…. Thanks for watching and commenting. I can’t answer your question as I am not an expert or certified Mercury Mechanic. I’m more of a DIY guy.
I see you backed out the idle screw 2 turns from lightly seated. I also had to go 2-2.5 turns out from lightly seated so the motor would idle without killing. The manual states 1.25 turns from lightly seated. I was concerned about my setting, but this makes me feel better. Also, the further the screw is turned out, the richer the mixture, so that's better than being lean (albeit at idle).
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I soaked the carb and followed with 45 minutes of heated ultrasonic cleaning in a special carb solution. So, I doubt any passages are clogged. I also changed the enrichment seals, so not sure why it's not idling at 1.25 turns out?
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair I didn't use wire, I did use 100psi compressed air and a heated ultrasonic cleaner though. If it runs right under load, I'm rolling with it. Seems like you had to go 2 turns out as well, so maybe there is an anomaly in the service manual.
Going through some of the old videos and found this! I love these motors. Wish I could find one for cheap. If you don’t mind me asking, what did you pay for it? I love these 25hp Mercs.
hey I have an 18 hp the same engine, I have some questions about the choke, I noticed yours has settings, mine did aswell but not it dosent lock on and I dont know why, can I mag you and ask some questions
Richard Ohare … I no longer have this motor and also remember little about the way this choke design works. You might want to purchase a service manual for this particular motor. It should have the information you are looking to find.
Hi from Italy! Great video! One question: how do you start the engine when the engine is cold (first start)? I mean, how do you set the choke knob? Many thks
Matteo trevenzolo…. Hello. Thank you for watching and commenting. I really can’t remember exactly how this particular choke worked but you definitely want to turn the knob to close off the shutter to the choke completely then after it coughs or sputters open the choke slightly and it should start up then open the choke completely.
They don't make that float for that year anymore so I bought a carburetor on ebay off of a 18hp same year I'm just gone clean it up and change the jets form the 25hp to the 18hp carburetor
Larry Nichols … that sounds like a good plan. There is a company called NLA marine parts that may be able to help if your not satisfied with the results. I show this business in my last video ua-cam.com/video/96l8nkrH9jU/v-deo.html If you want to look at it. Their contact information is 616-325-0757. They may have the float you need.
That’s one clean carb; great video!! 👍
Thank you for this. This is the only video that covers this kind of carburetor that I have.
I know, he doesn’t skip around or skip the small stuff, like some of the monopoly marine guys on YT

Hey, thanks for watching and commenting. Good luck with your project. I hope you get it running soon. Keep us posted. I’m glad the video was helpful.
What one adjusts mixture?
Feel like the idle and mixture are usually different.
Aaron Kraft … The fuel mixture screw is the one on the top right in the video at 6:04 min.
i always liked the older style carbs on these. float system was better than the newer pain-to-adjust donut shaped float.
I agree, thanks for watching and commenting
Hi i do the same thing it is awesome getting something and fixing it up.
Yea I know what you mean it’s a good feeling bringing these motors back to life and hearing them run.

Lumpy gas In a vacuum… Sorry I sold that motor and don’t have any footage on the choke. Sorry and good luck with your motor and thanks for watching.
@@LivetofishOutboardRepair thanks. I got it dialed in today
I have the same engine and carb. Do you know how to adjust the float?

Greauxpete …. just curious did you follow up with reaming out out the small idle circuit holes with a small wire and use compressed air?

Interesting. Fuel pump + carburetor= Pumpuretor?

I have one just like it
Larry Nichols… that’s awesome. These are great motors. I hope you get out to use it this season. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I had the same problem with mine the thing with mine my float got a hole in it and it won't keep idle
