@Dars Dex most metal bands sing about the inevitability of death and political ideology, those subjects are too heavy for fans of rap and pop to handle. Also in pop music everyone (mainly women) are over sexualised and the music is less about the listener and more about the artist stroking their own ego.
You can really see the crowd all pumped during the first half of the concert and then exhuasted from all the headbanging and cheering in the end haha 😄
Saw them in 2002 with this line-up. Met them all at an in-store signing before the gig and there was about 10 people there. Blasphemer is an elite player/writer. Solid.
10 people? What a fucking shame. In-stores for death/black metal just don’t seem to do well. When I was running record stores in the 90’s I did one with Morbid Angel, in Anaheim (so, near Los Angeles and highly populated) and we had 23 people show up. I did another with Vader and we had less than 20. Another, with Cannibal Corpse and we had about 30 people. Did another with Napalm Death and we had 15 people. All were advertised in local music print rags as well as being on the HUGE double-sides sign we had outside the store (on Beach Blvd, which is not only a famous street, but had loads of traffic every day). Worst one was probably Possessed. I did it right before they broke up…’92 I think…and we had 10 people show up. I swear I tried like a MF to help all these bands out but I was always so embarrassed by the show of support and how many people showed up. A real bummer, man.
@@miketausig4205 I get the impression that time was a bit of a low point in Mayhem’s career arc. I was getting into Mayhem at that time and all of of the Troo Kvlt black metal types I’d talk to didn’t like Grand Declaration of War and considered Maniac a poor replacement for Dead. Nowadays I get the impression that Black metal (and Mayhem) are both more popular, and that people are a LITTLE less gatekeep-y about metal than they once were. Just a little.

The internet has killed the mystique of the black metal genre. I'm not saying an Eggo waffle commercials aren't kvlt, I'm just saying the image got lost when everything became known. I remember just randomly picking records up not even knowing what they'd sound like. You knew some stories of people killing someone, or committing suicide but that was it. Now we have Mayhem - What's in My Bag?
@@EXCIDIVMFERO Generally speaking that's what drives black metal. Most of it is about mood, atmosphere, and 'mystique.' That's why bands (especially the older ones) used fake names, kept their personal lives hidden, and used low productions values in their presentation. Look at Darkthrone. Soulside Journey has a better production than any of their other albums, as well as more complicated writing. With a few exceptions (Emperor comes to mind), most of the black metal scene is all about image. Even Varg said that. So yes, you can enjoy the music, but it would disingenuous to ignore the 'mystique.'
@@humantacos9800 The mystique is about the music, not about the image. Varg bragging about the church burnings and killing his band member had nothing to do with the mystique of the genre, but with his fucked-up personality and need for attention. The music comes first, then everything else.

Half of Freezing Moon's success is Hellhammer's talent in writing masterpiece parts and in excellent possession of drums. Delightfully.
Other half is the singer double tapping himself and the bassist killing the guitarist
