This week I take a look at Frankenweenie, Tim Burton's final stop motion film. And a recreation of his live action short film in 1984. With Burton proving with Corpse Bride that he was more than capable of pulling off the world of stop motion, does Frankenweenie manage to live up to the high standard?

Mary Shelley didn't direct movie called "Marry Shelley's Frankenstein" or TV series called Mary Shelley's Frankenhole", nor did Bram Stoker direct movie "Bram Stoker's Dracula".
This movie is a seriously underrated gem. It's a shame Disney doesn't do movies like this anymore.

But why did Tim Burton stop making stopmotion films? Was it too much work, or did he get tired of it, or what? (Although I hate to suggest these possibilities!)
they keep making child friendly copy paste copium movies nowadays
I would have liked to see them make Danny Elfman’s movies “Little Demons” and “The World of Jimmy Callicut”. They cancelled those movies after he had only finished the song demos.
14:33 i believe what the professor was trying to say is that Victor took way more precautions the first time (when he revived Sparky), while he rushed the revival of the fish. I mean, Victor put great effort in making sure Sparky was in "good condition" while the fish was literally throw into the tank with little to no regards.
I’d say it’s also the professor’s way of saying “Did you actually care about it?” Because with Sparky, Victor wanted to bring him back to life, he put heart into it, whereas with the fish, He basically did it out of obligation as a means to show Edgar how Sparky came back to life.
That's how I interpreted as well.
The way i see the Professor pointing out about science is like doing a review or being a critic as the point of a review is like painting or doing art as long as you see the message and moral behind a story shows you are at least putting carefull steps in what you are saying in the review and point out the movie might not be bad but when a bad review happens it shows the person will go full rage mode without doing any fair pointers something people on rotten tomattos and IMDB tend to do and some on youtube like razorbeast and phantomstrider

I’d add that a fish isn’t a dog so the effects could change depending on which animal it is done on. Not only that but the fish is in a jar of water when it is electrocuted while Sparky was simply under a sheet.
Honestly one thing I was and still am impressed by in Frankiween is how Victor doesn't blame or even have any hostility to his father when Sparky dies. It only happened because of being forced to play Baseball for his dad. But no anger at all.
Showing Victor is pretty mature and knows it was a horrible accident.
I really like the fact that the animals don't all just become Frankensteins monsters but actually different monsters from universal
and then there's Gamera, a creature made by Daiei

I like to think that both Victors are related and in the same timeline, Corpse Bride Victor being an ancestor of Frankenweenie Victor. I can definitely see people sharing traits with their ancestors, and more than just with appearance, which would explain their shared love of dogs, and the way they go about the concept of death with a (mostly) calm demeanor, panicking about being in the land of the dead aside

@@Deliveredmean42 yes, but I can still see a connection with that movie, despite Burton having almost nothing to do with Nightmare, aside from the use of his art style
I think what the science teacher meant when he said that the second experiment didn’t work was because it wasn’t made with the same passion and effort as the first experiment. Not necessarily meaning that “you didn’t love this experiment enough to make it work the same”, I think the teacher was trying to say that science is a subject that thrives in passion, not laziness.
Victor was passionate about bringing back his dog while the other kids just wanted to win the science fair

The funny thing is we were so close to a Stop Motion Tim Burton Addams Family film but that didn't end up happening

Heartwarming tale of a boy who resurrected his beloved dog that would later get an animated adaptation! I loved the original film ( saw it on early 90s Disney) and love the latter! Just some great stop motion fun!
I watched Tim Burton's Frankenweinie film last year on Disney Plus and I really enjoyed it !!! Not only that I love stop motion animation but the black and white color palette definitely helped make this film stand out from his other works.

The main character is named Victor due to it being a “childlike” retelling of Frankenstein. The mad scientist in the original story is named Victor Frankenstein. The family in the film has the last name “Frankenstein”.
I saw the original Frankenweenie short years ago on the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD that had a bunch of extra content on it, and as someone who had already gone through the pain of losing my first dog, I related to the desire of bringing Sparky back from the dead. Years later I was pleasantly surprised to see that this movie was being remade in stop-motion. Just as relatable as it was the first time around, with charming new visuals.

to being a child like nothing else can that hurt goes so deep and no matter how they pass
we always feel guilty we couldn't save them.
I think the saddest scene was when Sparky saw his reflection and thought of himself as a monster so ran away to his previous grave until Victor came back for him
This unlocked a hidden memory of mine from childhood. Back then when I was little I'm really a scared cat so I somehow was disturbed by this film that was played in the tv, but I also remember almost crying because of him losing his dog, which is something I can't imagine before, but now that I experienced it, I honestly feel if I rewatch this movie I'm just gonna straight break down.
My friend and I would quote Weird Girl all the time back when we were in high school, she was just so charmingly creepy in way that only Burton could pull off
I have fond memories of this film, it's certainly not perfect but it has good stylization and a heartfelt story. Though I too was really confused by the disappearing fish bit. Did it literally evaporate into thin air? Did it grow legs and climb out? My best guess is that the invisible fish died and was sitting at the bottom of the jar, but somehow this context was never put in, causing a major plot hole

I like to think he's a descendant of Victor and Victoria, either the mum or the dad to be fair because the dad looks like Victor also and the mum reminds me of Victoria like her soft spoken voice.
Yeah, he could be. That's what I'm thinking too.
I think that the “love the experiment or else it won’t work” doesn’t mean “because Victor didn’t care or love the goldfish it died”. I think it’s that less care was put into its resurrection, whereas he painstakingly rebuilt and modified Sparky (his only best friend) so that the lightning would work as intended. As not only was the goldfish not his to begin with, but he was doing so unwillingly as Igor basically blackmailed him into doing it.
Why would he put in as much effort that time? He didn’t know that the results would differ, but clearly the lack of care in its resurrection led to a different result.
Tim Burton actually wrote the story that Nightmare was based on. But even that was heavily influenced by Danny Elfman when he wrote the lyrics to the songs.
In reference to when the teacher told Victor about how it was a variable change that caused the fish to be different compared to Sparky : I always percieved it as passion , like becuase Victor cared about his dog so much he was hyper focused to make sure everything was functional...When you have passion and motivation your work shows that glow but when you are just going through the motions even scientifically it will not end up as precise or treated with such care. Each pet that followed had a Owner with jaded intentions while Victor merely wanted his best friend back. As someone who loved projects and science ....it was my love of the topics or topic choices given that made me become extra involved in the creation rather than merely the drive for a good grade. If the topic was something I had no connection to I would crank out whatever was designated for it.
Ok Steve, I’ve been a lurker for far too long: I think the film The Breadwinner would be right up your alley, it is about a young girl who must provide for her family under taliban rule and it’s chock full of dark themes and violence. Hopefully you notice this, it’s an incredible movie and I think you would genuinely enjoy it 😊
Persepolis is also pretty good.
This movie is criminally underrated! I have a huge soft spot for stop motion, because there is more genuine feeling to it compared to computer animation.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the latter, it’s just that the former feels like something or someone is really there. It’s like a puppet show (such as “The Muppets” in general) where you know they are hands in foam, but you don’t care.
I remember that, when this movie premiered back in 2012, i was scared even by the trailers. But with time, i'm no longer afraid at all. But i won't deny that it's still pretty weird.
What is interesting is that the models in both Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie are provided by McKinnon and Saunders a British company who are responsible for providing the models for a lot of well-known British shows such as Postman Pat Bob the Builder Rubberdubbers the Koala Brothers and the very obscure Lavender Castle the latter of which I do hope Steve reviews one day on the channel because that show had some surprisingly dark moments

I love that it’s black-and-white. I love the style of actually trying to make a throwback movie actually LOOK like it’s in the style you’re trying to emulate.
Tim Burton did something similar with Sleepy Hollow by capturing the Hammer Horror style (gothic imagery, stylized blood, a complete re-imagining of a classic horror tale, Christopher Lee plays a part, and it ends with an explosive one-on-one brawl.)
This was the first tim burton movie I had ever seen and now he's one of my favourite director's of all time, so I definitely have a lot of nostalgia and respect for this film!
I watched it for the first time last month, and it was a pretty good and interesting movie! Tim Burton's work never fails to amaze!!! i give Frankenweenie 10/10!!!
Fun Fact: The voice actor for Edgar also plays Albert Glass from the animated Disney Channel series, Fish Hooks, who is an invisible fish!
i remember bailing my eyes out as a child, this movie made me extremely sensitive towards animals. I rewatched it recently which still made me sad but it was such an amazing / emotional film. It’s unique in so many ways
My personal theory for the same name is that Victor in Corpse Bride is because it probably takes place in England during the Victorian era. And Victor in Frankenweenie is just an homage to Victor Frankenstein, as well as the fact that it is a remake
Plus, Victor's last name in both the short and film is also Frankenstein
I now have the headcanon that this Victor from Frankenweenie is actually descended from Victor and Victoria (kind of like a grandson-grandfather sort of thing).

I remember the victor comparison. Funny enough, some theories even lead to him becoming Jack and his dog becoming Zero!
Victor appears to have been based on Danny Elfman’s childhood and the character of Jack as we all know is heavily influenced by Danny Elfman’s feelings about his own career.
This was definitely one of my favorite stop-motion films as a Child.
I remember my father showing me this movie at some point in my childhood, and I remember being terrified for the next 3 months. As of now, I love it and hold it very close to my heart.

The thing that's weird about Frankenweenie, is that Burton actually came up with it 30 years before doing it for Disney. Originally a live action film, released in 1984.
I loved this movie way back!
One scene I remember from Frankenweenie was the vampire cat transformation.
The fact that we get to experience every part of it on screen from his limbs and neck unnaturally extending, to wings graphically breaking out of his back, and all through it the sounds of his bones cracking and his yowls of pain.
No way that isn't a kiddie version of The Fly, with a little bit of An American Werewolf in London thrown in.

Disney's a Christmas Carol, starring Jim Carrey and directed by Robert Zimmeckis.
It's one of my favourite movies to watch at Christmas time and for good reason.
The movie brings Dickens' classic Christmas story to life in ways near un-achievable in live action.
The music, lighting and sound design is on point, the character designs (though admittedly uncanny) are memorable and distinct and of course, the whole movie is teeming with dark moments and imagery.
Heck, the film opens on a dead body done up for the grave, how much darker do you want for your christmas story?

A lot of people make this mistake, but Frankenweenie is actually the name of the doctor.
I used to have this on VHS when I was a kid. Got it from a truck stop bin during one of our trips. Had no idea what I'd found and how fortunate I was to be exposed to so early.

Maybe the reason why victor from frankenweenie looks a lot like victor from corpse bride is probably because the 2 are related like great great grandfather and great great grandson. Think about it victor from corpse bride lives some time in the 1800s in England and got married in the end of the film while the victor from frankenweenie lives in the 1950s in America. Surely sometime between those 2 timelines victor from corpse bride’s children moved to America and got married and grew a family in there thus creating victor from frankenweenie and the reason the 2 look so alike is probably because victor from frankenweenie has more of victor from corpse bride’s genes. I mean the father of victor from frankenweenie looks a lot like his son than the father of victor from corpse bride. Confused yet? Good.

The reason sparky had stitches was because the car probably torn his skin and maybe he started to decompose early.
They probably shouldn’t have taken Sparky to the baseball game. I know Victor loved him but we all know how dogs get when they see a baseball. lol
I knew he’d review this at some point! It was only a matter of time since this is definitely something he would review
I think having heart in doing any project, art or science, can make an incredible difference. The first time Victor did the experiment, he did it out of love as Sparky was very dear to him. The second time however, there wasn't any heart in it and was just an experiment he wanted to get done and over with so Igor would stop bugging Victor and keep Sparky safe and secret. It is as Mr. R had said in the same film "Science is not good or evil but can be used for either or." Victor only did the experiment to bring Sparky back. It was never intended to be used again for the sake of competition and greed.
Holy smokes this was my favorite stop motion movie as a kid

This movie has been my childhood and still love it till this day the whole theme and story to it is very beautiful that tim burton created such a beautiful movie.

One of Tim Burton's underrated movies and it's in fact my favorite. I relate to this movie a lot and it always makes me cry, i feel it extra special since my second name starts with a V and my beloved dog's name started with an S. I do feel a deep connection with this movie and I'm in fact getting a Sparky tattoo as a Christmas gift to myself.

Tim Burton was involved with a animated show in the 90s called Family Dog. Sparky has the same design as the dog from the show.

Oh man I'm so glad this movie got a 2022 revisit! Great to see one of my favorite reviewers tackle it. Frankenweenie is my second favorite movie of all time. It'll forever make me sad that it didn't do well, just because it was black and white.
Fun fact, Nassor is pretty much just one giant reference to Boris Karloff, the actor of Frankenstein's monster! His voice sounds the same, and his mummy references are a nod to how Karloff also starred in the first Mummy movie in 1932.

My personal theory is that Victor van Dort is a ancestor of Victor Frankenstein. We could say a daughter of victor and Victoria married with an Frankenstein as a surname that soon immigrated to America some were during I guess the late 1880’s or 1890s or even perhaps early Edwardian era. I’d also made the idea that they immigrated because during the 1800’s was the mass migration to America. Maybe the wealth of the van Dorts ran out that caused said immigration of the Frankenstein branch.
Most likely as it's most very likely that the Van Dort fishing company went bankrupt seeing as it's very likely that Victor's parents Nel and William died since we don't see them again in the movie when they were looking for Victor not to mention Victoria's parents Lord and Lady Everglot went bankrupt anyway plus when they ran into that room in the film we never see them again neither I like to believe they jumped out of the window in committed suicide so it's very likely that victor and Victoria decided to settle for a more simpler life and decided to immigrate to America

The dog's multiple stitches may be because Victor had to make some incisions to mend any damaged internals. There's no way the impact from the car left the dog's body unscathed, some bones were undoubtedly broken at least.
I believe that the main character is called Victor, b/c Dr. Frankenstein’s name was that in the book.

I don’t think he meant his literal love effected the project, I think it’s because he took extra care and preparation to bring back sparky and only threw together something for the fish
By the way, Steve, since your channel focuses a lot in dark animated movies, you should review The Rugrats Movie. That movie can get darker than you could imagine.

To be fair, he said the variables were changed, i always assumed that was just about the fact they were very different animals were used, a small dog vs an even smaller fish

This film deserved Best Animated Feature. Right along with either Paranorman, Pirates Band of Misfits, Rise of the Guardians or Wreck it Ralph.

The similarity in design is probably an Easter egg, but the name of this character is Victor Frankenstein, a reference to the character of the same name from the Mary Shelley novel "Frankenstein", who also brought a monster to life.

The explanation at the end of the vid is very scientific. When I run participants, even if it's someone I know, I have to treat them exactly the same way. Changing your mindset changes the entire way you run your tests/experiments, which has tons of effects on the variables being altered and those being recorded.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned before, but I remember seeing somewhere (I think in one of the books he wrote), that the reason both Victors share the same name is because it’s a reference to Victor Frankenstein - one of his biggest inspirations (plus the whole Frankenstein inspired story for this movie in particular)

having seen both films.. i love both, imo is a very kid friendly take on Frankenstein. helps teach kids loss in a creative way.
