This is probably one of the most unique entries I've looked at, a 2004 Danish film called Strings. Which not only utilises marionettes on a magnificent technical level, but also has one of the most creative takes to incorporate the marionettes into the world itself.

Do a review on the 2022 film Luck.
The concept of them knowing their strings exist, not knowing where they descend from, is a really cool touch. Gives the strings a religious significance, even if they're never treated with such reverence.
Most disturbing 4th wall break ever. ☹️
@@tylerfish2701 Not sure how. Religion is written into fiction all the time.
@@skyesfury8511 I was referring to the fact that they are aware of the strings.
@@tylerfish2701 OK, but that's part of what makes it so unique and creative and interesting.
@@skyesfury8511 I know.
I always loved the scene where the Mom comes in to find her children all tangled up together while they're giggling. It gives the whole world a more organic feeling even if I was just a scene.
I’m so glad this is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This may have some the most creative puppetry I’ve ever seen in a movie and it’s dark and somewhat gothic atmosphere definitely helps with that
I didn't know you watch his videos
@@l.t.h2o487 I do. They sometimes give me good idea on what I should watch next, either being exceptional or otherwise, or sometimes he acknowledges a movie that I’ve not seen in years. It gives me a sense of comfort despite how unforgivingly horrific half of the films/shows he covers are
His first video thath l whatchd was Animal farm
@@l.t.h2o487 Mine was for Tugs, though Animal Farm’s a good start
@@wolvepotter5858 yeah
Right out of the gate it reminds me of the Dark Crystal with the movements, and the eyes, and the overall serious and somber tone and aesthetic. The Dark Crystal was my absolute favorite movie growing up, so it's nice to see something similar here
We could use more Puppet movies like that to make you feel like your in a different world.
Strings reminded me of Dune.
I remember stumbling across this in a 4 pack of DVDs at Biglots waaay back in like 2009. So glad I got it, it's such a neat movie. You forgot to mention that even their weapons and combat are all about cutting strings! The swords have that hook to better cut a string, instead of stab a body. I found all the attention to detail utterly fascinating.
Strings is basically the serious older brother to Team America.
There's one thing I love about this film that makes it stand out from any other movie containing puppets, and that's the fact that the strings are so prominent. Something about it I really like, they COULD have used fishing wire type strings that everyone else uses but they chose to use thick strings to enhance the experience
Puppetry needs more recognition
It gets enough recognition. That's why people don't make more puppetry movies like that, it's a lot of work.
Stop Motion and Claymation does to.
@@theblackbaron4119 lol what
I had a nightmare like this...
The people were puppets and their strings went up into the clouds, but when I noticed my father was a puppet as well...the nightmare broke.
Just asking like: Is it because you find comfort that both of you are puppet?
But anyway, the idea of puppet is kinda funny by itself since you aware of what you're doing & can realise what you have done without analizing things like computer.
Similar case actually to "we're literaly all just some actors with scripts" while in reality we can have identity crisis of "what's my real specific role"
I have to say, the voice acting for the Danish is crazy.
The actor voicing the main character Hal Tera, voices a Danish dub for Hercules (Disney version), BUT ALSO does the dub for Spongebob and Krusty the Clown (Simpsons).....
Fun fact that was actually James McAvoy who did the voice of Hal in the English dub
@@williampulfer-melville8536 , kind of fits when you consider that he starred in Children of Dune at the time.
@@osmanyousif7849 yeah though The Voice he uses is the same one he gave Gnomeo in Gnomeo and Juliet
I'd recommend the anime film "Perfect Blue " because it DOES NOT hold back on the mind fustercluck with depicting the main protagonist slowly losing touch with reality following a string of murders relating to her acting career after retiring from the idol industry 😳
Can't stop thinking about how many times they had to fix the strings because they got tangled during production, that was def painful both mentally and physically
Plus the one time it was done on purpurse
@@MPbmfm Why was that done? 🧐
@@gjtrue Some of the children were playing a game, where their strings got tangled, so their mother had to untangle them
It's a shame that this form of art that not many people do anymore.
Can you do one on Wolfwalkers? It may not be very dark but is still rather entertaining, and does, at certain points, deal with certain themes such as murder, witchcraft, death on screen, hunting, and slavery in a way. Plus the animation is awesome.
And Irish people
@Generaal yes I agree the part where robin doesn't even tell the red head (I forgot her name) that her mother was there the whole time frustrated me
@@bepisthescienceman4202 the scariest concept of them all: the Irish
@@Generaallucas🤣
I remember seeing the trailer for this movie and being blown away by how no marionette movie before or since had made the strings part of the world's lore. It's prty creative.
Artistic and strangely creepy, especially for 2004 this looked like it was made a couple years ago.
*Genndy Tartakovsky's PRIMAL* is right up your alley as a self-certified dino nerd!! What Lola Bunny from *Space Jam* did for furries, this show does for animation lovers and violence lovers alike!
Yes! Primal is awesome! I would love to see Steve review that!
Yessssssss
Yes please review primal!
It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and the episode with the zombie dinosaur is one of the darkest episodes.
Exactly!!!
I love how they actually incorporate the strings as a crucial part of the story. One of the best things about this movie.
Not only does it play puppets straight, which isn't really done, they lean into the puppetry by having the strings be important
Probably one of my favourite puppetry films of all time! It’s such a great suprise seeing someone like you cover it, Steve! How Strings hasn’t received a cult following like The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth, I will never know. I truly do hope it gets more recognition as the masterpiece it is!
If I could make a recommendation, please check out The Dark Crystal! It’s a film that may be up your alley, especially since it’s one of the few Jim Henson films that only featured puppets!
I'm glad you & other movie review channels I watch look at films that are seldom looked at; really great work from you & the people behind this film.
I remember seeing this at Uni, and really liking it but since then i've never met another person who has seen it or talks about it, so thank you for giving this one some more exposure.
Well I know what I'm watching tonight! Cheers as ever Steve for bringing weird and beautiful animated works to our attention!
Media: *Uses any medium other than live action*
The general public: Must mean that it’s for kids! 😁
Ibought this movie on Apple TV and I loved it.
Thanks for giving this amazing film some more notoriety.
Something about the effort that went into this movie reminds me a LOT of The Dark Crystal. I'm not exactly sure what, I don't know if it's just the similarities in the use of puppets or not.
Also, I'm not sure if this movie has been suggested to you before or not, but would you ever consider checking out "Omae Umasou Da Na" ("You Are Umasou")? It's similar to Chirin, but with dinosaurs and a happier ending; it was based off of a Japanese children's book and the movie itself is really good (Although they made several REALLY shitty sequels, You Are Umasou is the only good and important one). I think you'd find it charming, though it's kind of hard to find.
You should review Wendell and Wild. It's from the same director of movies like Coraline and Nightmare before Christmas.
I wish I could get Steve to just do stories. I would pay for him to be my narrator.
The world setting and it's concept is so cool and unique, I wouldn't dare to change it into a CGI animation for facial expressions.
PS: Based on what you explain on how the characters work as puppets, I like to theoriese that you can't use the strings from previous puppets otherwise the strings would be useless.
I started watching this on a TV Catch Up service but didn't get through it all and it was gone by the time I got back, and before I could search for it I had forgotten the name, so thanks for doing this, now I can go and watch it in full!
Your channel helps me find media I couldn't ever find on my own and I have appreciated so many more projects because of your channel thank you
It's an intriguing plot and story. But if you ask me, the intimate "sex" scene could've been done away with. Even then it still would've been one of those decent Parental Guidance movies with a lot of precise marinette actions taking place for each character.
It really makes no sense for these characters to practice very human-like sex given that they’re all Barbie and Ken dolls. 😅
This is the earliest I've ever been. I absolutely love your work. Thank you for your content! It's makes my day.😊
It's been ages since I've experienced this underated masterpiece. As I recall the tempo was, in some sequences, a tiny bit slow. However, the atmosphere was foreboding and yet captivating.
This reminds me a lot of the kinda world building of Bionicle. The medium understanding and not only working within its own parameters, but designing it's world around it's core designs/themes is such an interesting concept that adds so much to it.
All the stuff with the focus on the strings was so interesting. A prison being a basically open area with a square frames as a roof acting as a prison for the strings and thus the puppet, the gate literally just being a small piece of metal that only blocks strings, and the act of amputation/transplantation. They could have easily told a story where they just ignore the strings, but they made the strings of all the puppets an integral part of the world and story.
Before the review kicks off, I just wanna say, wow, I remember this movie.
And I hope we get more movies like these.
can you give me some more examples of these danish dark/violent "kids" movies?
This is honestly really cool and I would love to see a continuation on this style cause it's really cool especially with the concepts of the strings this is dope but as you said it takes a very long time to learn how to operate them so yeah that's disappointing
Hi Steve, can you please do a review on Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio when it comes out on December 9th on Netflix.
Should be awesome !
Plus, from what we see based on all the Trailers of this movie, this version will be, in big lines, like the Disney Pinocchio 2022 but like this latter should have been, that mean correct, well made, and visually Amazing.
@@dudotolivier6363 I was fortunate enough to buy tickets this November 18th:)

5:58 This sounds a lot like Ship of Theseus. It’s a thought experiment on whether or not an object that had any of it’s components replaced is still the same object.
man, I want to watch this now. It looks amazing.
I love the look of this film so I will definitely check it out. Thank you for this review.
I know you are an animal lover so wasn't sure if you ever saw the film "Once Upon A Forest." It was one of my favorites from my childhood and while a bit dark also has light-hearted moments throughout to balance it.
The concept of the movie is so interesting! Thanks for the tip!
Wow I had no idea this film existed thanks for making this review
I think I'd make a surprisingly good video game that based around The concept of the strings Being a part of life force Not the story but the strings
Can you do a review of Terkel in Trouble? It's a Danish animated film from the same year as Strings and it's absolutely bonkers.
I'm glad you are actually communicating with your American counter-part Saberspark ! I like it a lot when you review the same things so I get to see points of view that sometimes diverge.
I remember checking out this movie at the library way back. I was just like why not, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I remember seeing this when I was younger but could never remember the name. Thank you for reminding me of the title.
What a treasure your channel is, in an age of contrived theater. Thanks for the heads up to the true artist.
Wow, what a coincidence.Earlier today I was wondering if we were gonna get a new video soon
OH MY GOD I'VE BEEN WANTING YOU TO WATCH THIS FOR SO LONG AHHHH
You gotta do Mouse & Child next!!!!!
Yes, awesome movie! I was glad to discover this a couple of years after it came out.
Here's a good idea for the Christmas Season:
"The Snowman"; a beautifully-drawn si-lent film (with the exception of the ope-ning intro & the song) with a well-known sad ending.
Fun fact:
The music for "The Snowman" was done by Howard Blake who did film scores for "S.O.S. TITANIC" & "AMITY-VILLE 3-D"
It is very interesting hearing about all these international films
Have you heard of The Giant King, it is a retelling of Ramayana with robots, it has 2 English dubs, a faithful one that was released in the UK, and an edited American dub that removes all the Ramayana reffrences
What a fascinating looking film! The plot sounds very similar to the synopsis of the Black Arrow by Robert Louis Stevenson.
I will say Steve, this movie is rather... unique in a lot of ways. Especially how this was done. I had no idea it could take 20+ years to master puppetry. But yeah, very interesting movie. Keep up the good work mate! 👏
How have I never heard of this beautiful film
Thank for introducing me to this movie!
I would love to see you review the anime movie The Fantastic Adventures of Unico (1981). Cute baby unicorn + crippling amounts of depression and sadness wherever he goes. Honestly, any of the Unico Anime media is enough to send someone into a downward spiral.
Hello mister Steve, i wanted to say bravo for this new episode. You make us discover so many animated films that could fall into oblivion, I admire your approach. May I propose you a french film that I think would be of interest to you.
"Les Enfants de la Pluie" (The Rain Children) of Philippe Leclerc (2002) the adaptation of the novel "A l'image du dragon" of Serge Brussolo.
P.S. : Excuse me for my bad english
All video and not a single joke about string theory :) Sigh, I really felt strung along by the expectation of one.
Also, living in Denmark, yeah there was some talk of this movie, but it wasn't a big deal when it came out, and I had frankly forgotten that it even exsisted. Maybe a lack of marketing.
You have to watch 2019s Pinocchio from Italy. It’s such a fantastic Pinocchio movie with amazing costumes, makeup, and character design
You’ll love Primal
I will drop everything to watch your videos I adore your content!
I've seen this film on TV when I was a kid, I don't remember much of the plot but some scenes stuck with me all these years, you might say it came with a lot of strings attached, I will stand by my pun.
I was literally watching your latest video when this came out
Wow. Nice review Steve. May I suggest reviewing the show Primal. It’s a mix of dark scenes and dinosaurs. I know how much you love dinosaurs when they are accurate.
I know I have made a few suggestions before but I really think you should watch The Little Prince, not only is the art style absolutely beautiful and the shift between them is just stunning but the story is actually really good. It feels definitely like something you would enjoy and I would absolutely love it if you reviewed my favorite movie. I'd love your opinion on it.
I like how, to show how broken the king is, he has deep grooves & such in his face.
Awesome movie, to me it was a good send off to an unfortunately dying art. Growing up puppeteering was still around and use to go watch shows whenever one would come up at an auditorium where I lived. I can understand from a person who never experienced this art form much, viewing it for the first time make you think it's comical that the facial expressions are static but the same with the earliest forms of anime being cut outs moving on paper, you would get use to it. But certainly no this movie did not need modern movie trope such a slapstic comical character and yes it would have certainly hurt the movie overall.
But all in all I'm glad the art form got to be in a serious mature story viewed world wide, the shows usually had to cater to children, but speaking to some puppeteers a lot of them wanted to perform more serious stories but couldnt due to the stigma of puppets being children entertainment. So not surprised that award was labelled as such.
i remember watching this forever ago. had honestly forgotten about it until i saw that thumbnail
Amazing! Will have to check it out. I really like puppetry as an art medium, but it is true it's dificult to find something because it is mostly kids' content. I recently watched The Dark Crystal (series) and it was really good! Like game of thrones for kids. I watch the old movie after that, but I didn't like it that much ( it is probably the timing).
I feel so cheated that I, as a Dane, have never even heard of this one until now :0
Could you review the Dark crystal (og Film and series)?
The puppets could've really benefited from removable face plates like the old school Tomas the Tank engine series, but I can see why they didn't want to add more work to do between shots.
This movie looks awesome, I love the concept
I feel like Strings is a movie made for a magical stage theater.
You should do Wendell and Wild. It was good story and great animation.
I've just watched the film recently and at first I was thinking this when I saw this character Raúl why he is attending an All Girls Private School seeing as boys arn't allowed to enrol at those schools it was only when one of the popular girls I guess called him Ramona was it when I realised that Raúl is a Trans boy someone who was born a girl but identifies as a boy.
I also do like the characters of Wendell and Wild themselves because for a couple of demons they are pretty likeable characters also I was actually shocked when it was revealed that the demon they were working for and imprisoned them the Buffalo Belza was actually their dad and even he is a likeable character despite being essentially the films equivalent of Satan
please review perfect blue,it's underrated, but such a dark film.About the idea of a pop idol singer, having to find herself,as people around her gets killed. Then the solution of the film is to overcome the person that's ruining her life
Should someday talk about the film Something Wicked Comes This Way.
You should review Night on the Galactic Railroad, I personally think ithe symbolism plays out perfectly. The ending is really sad and hits you like a bag of bricks,. I have never cried when watching a movie until thus one.. how ever, it's not for everyone but I love it personally
does anyone know the name of the song playing on 3:38 and onwards?
You know I think you might like Okubo and the three strings. It's dark but also bitter sweet.
I would love to see a review, and your take, on both American Pop and Heavy Metal - both animated. Thank you!!
I remember this film. Didn't know what it was call until now
Man you really strung us along for a ride
great vid seve reviews
I briefly skimmed Ober this moviebabd actually thought it'd be a good fit for you to look at so it's cool to see you did.
Future recommendation the stop motion 2006 Peter and the wolf film- it's about half an hour long
Oh my god, someone else has seen this movie! I thought I imagined this in some kind of weird fever dream one day as I've never been able to find anyone else acknowledging it!
You should really check out Lost Ollie! It would fit perfectly for the channel.
Thanks for showing my drawings

2:10 if you want an actually good Pinocchio movie, Netflix has a stop motion one from Guillermo del toro in theaters right now and releases on Netflix Dec 9
Just the opening few clips intrigues me. It certainly does look unique. Although, I am nevertheless reminded of... Oh, what was it called? Some kind of Jesus flick... The Miracle Maker or something? A puppet-based film of some sort, the trailer could be seen on the UK VHS of Thomas & The Magic Railroad.
Ive never watched this but for sure im going to thanks for this!!!
Growing up this was one of my favourite films... and yes team america was also something i saw back then, but that was probably in like the top 10... maybe
I just found you the other day and started watching, right after I found out I have a bald spot. Now I am getting beat over the head with keeps.
