Our test car today is my MINI Cooper S with JCW trim and the brand new 2023 Infotainment System with the navigation package.
Which will win? BMW's Idrive or Google Maps?

Big MINI fan here! As much as I want to love MINI navigation, it currently is not as feature rich as Google maps. But it's always a great backup for me and it's integration into the car is nice. I'm much looking forward to the new mini ios9 with what looks like an improved UI!

Thanks for the video, but I´m pretty sure that you don't have the "Real Time Traffic Information" upgrade on your mini. The traffic information icon on the left side should be red.
Thanks for that really useful comparison. My wife has a 2023 MINI Cooper and I borrowed it recently to get to a meeting. I used the in built sat nav, which was still set to the default settings (as she uses Google maps on her phone). I thought it was pretty bad TBH. I think the perspective view and the split screen option would have made it much easier for me. I have a 2022 Kia and that uses TomTom maps here in the UK. That is much better and has an auto split screen function when approaching junctions with lane information. It even has images of the actual road signs as well. I tend to use that over CarPlay/Google maps.

Yeah turning on split screen really helps but other maps are definitely better.
I have not used tomtom other than years ago when computers were huge.

I’m quite fond of the built-in nav in my 2019 F57 (May 2018 delivery), and use it often. It reliably reroutes around traffic when appropriate, in fact it saved me several times on my U.S./Canadian road trip that I just returned from, recalculating when traffic appeared on my route. And as Ethan said, no cellular service needed (I don’t even have cell service in the areas surrounding my house 😅) and not particularly helpful lane guidance. I’m a self-professed Apple fanboy, but I still good built-in nav. I’ll use CarPlay when the vehicle I’m in either doesn’t have built-in nav or if the built-in nav stinks (e.g., older car without recent updates).
Yeah I really like it’s integration and still works well, however if you are going to spend more in nav, I’m not sure if it would be worth it.
I'm enjoying seeing this new navigator as it'll be on my Mini SE which I'm still waiting for. its due 1st week of September

Yes I have been using Waze but it was crashing a lot recently so because of that and how google maps is more of a middle ground to use google maps.

Mine alerts me of obstacles and traffic.

Is low the only navigation that functioned on my car in some areas was the onboard navigation system, Google and Apple Maps ended up being useless in a lot of areas on my drives.

At least where I am, maybe I will try it when I get back to the states and see if it’s better.
Would completely agree that it’s a great option when the route takes you through an area with no cellular connection

5:43 I've seen that overhead map (on the right of your split screen) on my 6.5" screen (whole screen, not split), and I've no idea how I did it 😕
I believe if you go to maps and push the controller to the right, you may get more options?
Nice review, in the UK the BMW/Mini navigation does have real time traffic information (on main routes) and will offer alternative routes if the main route has delays, do you not get that where you are? One big plus for Google Maps is the search function, it will often find off the beaten track locations just by name where the built in app can't. Shame the Mini only supports Apple Carplay and not Android Auto.

Sadly for no reason the mini GPS usually takes you through a much longer route. 🤬
Yeah, I do not understand why! If that was fixed, it would be my first choice.
I was in my friend's Mini Cooper (2023) today and she's never investigated using Google maps but moans about how she gets sent in circles by the car nav.
But I couldn't even work out how to get Google Maps on her display. She's connected her phone through Bluetooth but the apps section never shoes any apps.
Anyone got any advice?
She has to set up Apple CarPlay to get what I was showing here.
If she has an android, you can try mirrorlink but it’s not as good.
