  • I have my pilots license, but I am still learning. I started not to make or post this video since I know I will be opening myself up to scrutiny. Having said that, I always want to be as transparent as possible about my aviation journey. This video will show an important aspect of flying that many people don't talk about. Taxiing is just as important than flying. In this video, I struggle substantially to get to the active runway. Check out the video, don't forget to hit the thumbs up button and please subscribe to the channel. Let's fly!

    Trust me brother, and I think I can speak for all fellow pilots when I say this: we’ve all been there! You said the most important point which is even though we are licensed to fly, we are ALWAYS learning and we’ll continue to learn. Swallowing your pride is a must in aviation. Safe flying!!

    Russ - That wasn't so bad. You did everything exactly right when you realized it was overwhelming. On the initial clearance you realized you didn't comprehend the entire route and asked for a progressive taxi. When you were unsure you asked for them to repeat.
    Tip: Use the taxi diagram in foreflight and traceout the route (especially at more complex airports)

      Hey brother, Carlos, I appreciate this positive feedback. I have to confess I felt like such an idiot. My brain was like, nope I got nothing for you big fella! Anyway, I’m glad to hear that I did the right thing, because it was the only thing I could think to do at the time. I was really twisted in knots. Anyway, definitely going to watch ForeFlight on the taxi diagram a lot more next time. Be well, and thanks again for the positive feedback!

    Thanks for sharing the video. Trust me your not alone when it comes to complex taxi instructions. I like writing out taxi clearance to help me, so I had a pen and paper ready, with no idea what the clearance was going to be, and I even struggled writing it down. I feel that she could have given it a little slower…. But, it was nice for here to then give it back to you step by step… Good job brother, keep going to those tower control airports.. love your videos!

    Don't be embarrassed! You did precisely what you should have done! It's a lot better to ask for help than to try to bluff your way through a confusing situation. What you did is the mark of a good pilot. More people should do the same any time they're not sure about what to do. This is a great example for other pilots who are learning to be good pilots. Glad you posted it.

    I am so glad you decided to post this; it's a great lesson for all of us, students and experienced alike. It was nothing like what I thought it would be based on your intro. I, personally, think you did everything right. You asked the controller to repeat, and when it was obviously more complex than you expected, you asked for progressive taxi. How many new pilots would even remember to do that. I will admit, I thought it was going to be very different because of something I got to experience. Last year I was flying with another friend of mine, we were both new pilots who trained at non-towered airports. Anyway, I flew the first leg and landed at a towered airport, taxied to the FBO and took a short break. Things went well. My buddy took over, got the weather, all the basic checks, the normal stuff. I was looking at my tablet, checking our flight route home, not paying much attention when all of a sudden it dawned on me that we were moving and my buddy was just happily heading out to the taxiway without contacting ground first. Luckily, we both caught it before we got too far along. He was super embarrassed but it all worked out.

    • @RusscanFLY
      @RusscanFLY  Рік тому

      Wow, that must’ve been really freaky. I can’t imagine what would’ve happened if he would’ve continued taxiing without having contacted ground control. I wonder if that would’ve been a here’s a phone number to copy moment. Anyway, yeah, I was definitely going to think about not posting this video just because it was so humbling. But, that’s the nature of this, UA-cam journey them on, I always wanna share the good the bad and everything in between. Anyway, he will brother and fly safe.

      Thank you so much for this comment. I was really worried about posting this video, because I definitely didn’t feel to competent during this taxi. I had studied the taxi diagram, but for whatever reason as soon as she started talking, and then corrected the taxi instructions, only to give me different ones I really just couldn’t get my brain to comprehend what was being said. since I knew I was having some difficulty, the only thing I could do was to ask for progressive taxi. I had never asked for it before, but I always heard that it was a thing. So, I definitely appreciated how patient the controller was with me, because, as you can see, even after I asked for it, I still needed her help a couple times. Russ - you did the right thing asking for progressive instructions. What would have been a mistake is proceeding without being certain.

      @@RusscanFLY What used to mess me up were the crossing runway instructions. When I get one of those, I write the runway number down and draw an arrow through it. When I get a hold short, I put the line above the number.

    3:44 RIGHT DECISION. My hat is off to you. Exactly. Tell them that you're "unfamiliar" ("first time here" accomplished the same thing) and asking for progressive taxi alerts the ground controller and everyone else on frequency that you're going to need a little extra help. You needed it, and you asked for it, which is exactly what you should do.
    I have over 500 hours, and and IFR rating, and I fly out of class C airports all the time. In the luxury of my office, without pressure, and with a 2-minute pause to study the taxi diagram, I can figure out what they were getting at. But those instructions read out like that were a mouthtull.

    • @fsodn
      @fsodn Рік тому

      5:22 Also another good move. When you got to the runway you were to cross, you read back the crossing instructions on frequency, which helps to verify that you're doing the right thing, and it legally protects you (slightly). And you also looked clear as you approached, which is another good move. Nicely done.

    I flew to PNE the night before I had shoulder surgery last month for dinner….I had a similar route; was parked at Atlantic FBO. On the Uber ride back to the airport, we pulled out the chart and went over anticipated routes; and we got exactly what we briefed. I picked up tips like that from all my airline friends; brief brief brief. Once I start the engine, and get the ATIS, next thing is taxi diagram and anticipate route; also helps to know when you have D-NOTAM and some taxiways are closed. And during my arrival briefing after I brief the approach, I go over the taxi diagram also.

      Thank you so much! Yeah, my brain just went into vapor lock for some strange reason. I figured, I might, as will humble myself and ask for help. Anyway, fly well!

    If no one said already.
    Write down the taxi. Then foreflight has notation, so you can draw the route on the taxi diagram

      Thank you for the great advice! I really did try, but for some reason, my brain was just not cooperating. I think I psyched myself out, since I was already nervous about not taxiing to the runway, I’m used to taxi to. Thanks again, and hopefully next time I’m able to be better prepared. Fly well!

    That ATC person twice corrected what she said which made it even more confusing.

      Yeah, it was a lot! I was trying to follow, and then my brain just went into vapor lock or something. It was so weird. Once I saw what she was saying, I was able to gather myself.

    I think you’re being a little hard on yourself. I’ve heard IFR clearances easier to read back! You did good and the right thing. Everyone has this happen. You did it right. Slow down. Ask for clarification. Good job. I think you’ve got a fantastic attitude.

      Thank you so much for this amazing comment! It definitely makes me feel better about what happened. It’s hard to eat a hefty, helping of humble pie, sometimes, but I did promise myself I’d be transparent about what happens during my aviation journey. Thank you for the support, it really means a lot. Be well!

      That’s good to know. I’m not gonna lie, that was the first time I went to 24 most of the times I’ve taken off at PNE, it’s always been 33. That’s what I get for being complacent!

    11:30 You made no mistakes. You got in over your head with the taxi instructions, and BEFORE LEAVING THE RAMP you made sure that you and your airplane were in a situation that you could handle.
    I landed at George Bush Intergalactic in Houston, mis-understood a taxi instruction, and got yelled at by the ground controller. You did much better than I did.

    • @RusscanFLY
      @RusscanFLY  Рік тому

      Yeah, I was worried about getting yelled at, but I was really didn’t want to have a runway incursion. I knew at some point I had to cross the runway which in theory was an active, but I just didn’t want to say for sure. I definitely need to develop a better short hand, especially if the instructions change mid instruction, Mike would happen here. When she started to rattle off the instructions, but then changed her mind, that’s when my brain went into a complete vapor lock.

    Following your progress/videos and always best to fly it safe and one day you will handle flying the ground just as well. Do you access your aircraft through Legacy and how does that work for you as far as expenses? PS. My home is under the PNE airspace and even fortunate enough sometimes to see the Frontiers pass over the neighborhood when they use their 6/24 runway. Do you know Chris who flies that 1965 Orange/Beige/White Mooney N5599Q out of PNE? That will do it. Clear Skies! 🛩

    • @RusscanFLY
      @RusscanFLY  Рік тому

      That is true, my goal is to be just as safe on the ground as I am in the air. I do access rental aircraft through legacy. You have to do a check out, do a written exam, and they have to fly with you to see how you fly. Once you do that, you’re allowed to rent that type in class of aircraft you checked out in. then you pay for the plane every time you rent it by the hour. I don’t know Chris, but I think I’ve seen that Mooney. Anyway, thanks for reaching out, and following me on my journey. Take care!
