Things I HATE about my new airplane!
I still can't believe that I am an airplane owner. I bought my Piper Cherokee 235 about two months ago and it's been an amazing experience. But with everything, there are things that come up that are not that great. In this video, I talk about three things I hate about my new aircraft. General aviation is awesome, owning an airplane is awesome, but there are a few things I hate about it! Check out the video and don't forget to subscribe! Let's fly!

I don’t know much about the experiment route, but I do have a friend of mine who is a bit older, but he’s building an RV. So I’ll definitely reach out to him and see if I can get some pros and cons from him. Stephanie a good topic for discussion for sure. Take care!

      @RusscanFLY День тому

      Actually, it works well in a busy pattern at Doylestown. You would be surprised at how many students jump in front of people when they’re on short final. So a lot of times is somebody’s on final and they’re coming in and they see somebody at the whole short line, it’s nice to hear that they’re not gonna jump out in front of you. Just part of communication. I actually had somebody thanked me one time, because it happened to them so many times that when they saw me sitting there, they got really nervous and thought about doing a go around, but when they heard me call, it put them at ease. So it depends on the situation for sure.

    Russ- the Piper Cherokee is a different animal than the Cessna that is for sure. I have done 98% of my training in Piper Cherokee’s and Warrior’s, and just last week I got checked out in our Cessna 172. I love my Pipers but the Cessna is fun. Anyway regarding adding more upward trim, PLEASE be careful with that! You don’t want to cause a trim stall. Look into what that is. Also I just passed my instrument check ride today so I am now officially instrument rated. It definitely taught me to be more exact with the airplane. For people who own their own airplane I highly recommend getting instrument rated. I’m not really interested in flying a GA airplane through storms, but I do believe I am much more proficient and exact with the airplane now.

    • @RusscanFLY

    I can share a lot of my experience with my Betty the 172. They say the first annual hits the hardest and the second is the cheapest. Here's what I have learned dealing with my Cessna 172. 1.) Relearn how to fly your aircraft, you have been flying Little Sammy and other rental aircraft. Now when you fly your aircraft, you will feel weirded out. That's normal, you're adjusting to fly the plane you're determined to fly the most than a rental. 2.) The plane will not rust overnight, even after three months she won't rot away. When life hits hard, I normally laugh it off and say, "I'll fly when the time is right." Your plane won't go anywhere, whether tiedown or hangar. If you can't find a reason to fly. Here's what I did. (A) Do Takeoff and Landing for one hour straight, literally (B) Practice landing on the numbers, or no later than the targeted landing spot (C) Create a better day currency flight, mix up a normal, soft field, short field takeoff and landing, simulate a NO flap landing, practice gliding to the runway or traffic pattern, and do BFM in your plane with an instructor or solo. (D) Sit down in your plane and draw out some ideas for upgrades, speed modifications, panel upgrades, and more. (E) Take a picture of everything of the AROW documents and store it on your phone. It'll make flight planning many times easier as you'll know your plane better than anyone. (F) Create your weight and balance chart dedicated to your aircraft. (I did this when I was injured from work for 6 weeks in rehab. I took the time to visit the aircraft and studied everything inside and out while being grounded. (G) Create a dedicated folder of your aircraft on all your devices. (H) Create a Microsoft Excel Logbook that 100% replicates your primary logbook. Trust me, it makes counting your hours, landing, and everything a breeze on Google Sheets or drives. If you suffer financial issues and can't afford Fore Flight or other paid apps. I have a dedicated secondary logbook for me to keep tabs on each and every flight without worrying about forgetting what you did and how you did it. (H1) Color code when you flew with passengers, flight training with a flight instructor on your plane, and highlight the entire row in red so you know that flight entry is not in the physical or primary logs as you'll be able to keep tabs and have an extremely accurate log that replicate from each other, and it'll help you count your hours and PLEASE FILTER EACH COLUMN ITS A GODSEND!!!! (I) Take photographs of your Hobbs and tach time before and after each flight, you can even add it to your Excel logbook as a fail-safe to keep tabs on your flight time with proof! (J) Take a picture of each and every instrument in your cockpit. That way, if a mechanic needs to know what type of indicator you have or issues with. You can send a quick picture in clear detail, and you can help explain the situation along the way. (L) Do a thorough Squawk-around on your aircraft. Take notes on everything you see, smell, hear, touch, and please don't taste any fluid you see from your plane XD. (L1) I normally do this every 3 months, to see and learn from those experiences if I have noticed anything unusual or caught my attention. Then I'll ask a friendly mechanic for their advice. You be surprised what you'll learn. (M) Don't be afraid to speak up and ask a mechanic (N) I know it's a lot but trust me. It works! 3.) This is important. Always ask what is required that is needed to be fixed, and what you can fix later on. Get the idea now of what Charle needs BEFORE it breaks, fails, and becomes damaged and you can prevent spending a lot of money on repairs. Like buy the part now, and service it. Things you can do with a mechanic while assisting to better learn your aircraft mechanically. Learn to trust the aircraft, he'll tell you something is wrong, like my text for Section 2-L. 4.) Practice, Practice, and Practice. Do some cross-country time if able, setup your personal minimums, stay positive, and have fun. Fly Safe Russ!

      @@RusscanFLY Thanks, I have a lot more to share from my experience and other ideas to add that I forgot. it may seem overwhelming at the first few months of ownership. But it’s normal, even if you didn’t fly a lot as you hoped. Also if you use your calendar on your phone or device, setup due dates for your things that you’re aircraft have to go through like annual, VFR equipment check on your transponder and static port, ELT, medical and more. have it set to like few months advance to give you time to schedule and invest. I brought my 172 from Riverside California and flew solo to Doylestown. 2300nm, ten stops, flew over 15 states and have the picture and the overall flight I did on display. Let me know if you ever have a questions about ownership. No matter what happens, your a good pilot and a good owner, fly safe

I have a 1965 Piper Cherokee 140 and my annuals have been between $1375.00 to $4000.00 and that doesn't count maintenance in the in-between. My avionics are ancient (no GPS), so a lot of band-aids on trying to find slide in replacements until I can make an avionics upgrade. I feel most of this same pain of ownership. My main frustration has been getting the rigging adjusted to fly straight. I fail to understand what any owner would have settled with trimming to solve a rigging issue, but that's what my seller had done. I also have the annoyance of one wheel pant that has had so many repairs over the years that it is now shaped differently than designed. It's literally acting like a trim tab causing a yaw but I refuse to take them off. Love the finished look too much.

The heavier engine will change the flight characteristics, especially during slow, edge of the envelope flight operations versus the 4-cylinder Cherokees. The instructor will be able to give you some good pointers, but primarily provide a level of safety while you practice, which is the main reason for the recommendation. Be safe and happy flying!

    Man.. thus was straight up hangar stand-up comedy. Good that you feel you are behind..worst case it's true which you will fix, likely you are on your way to be a good pilot who always feels like he must do more. Keep taking experienced pilots for rides , and ask feedback. Always question what they tell you and if it's still current. Man ur hooooked like most of us.

      The addiction is real!😂😂😂 and yeah, thank you so much for the advice to fly with other experience pilots. I was flying with a couple folks the other day, and one of the things that was really interesting is how they talked about putting in a little nose up trim on short final. That way that will lighten the nose a little bit. I tried it, and it was amazing! also, putting in a little power, goes along way! Be well, and thank you for the suggestion!

  • @jimmydulin928

    Your O-540 is heavier than a four cylinder, but you will get used to using trim and the auto trim is good with the auto pilot. A lot of pilots I have done flight reviews with in their heavier airplanes let the extra speed work their muscles more than necessary. It is the same Cherokee as with the O-320 or O-360 four cylinders. The POH approach speed for all Cherokees is quite a bit faster than necessary. Using power/pitch, rather than a low rpm setting, there is extra relative wind/prop blast across the inner wing and empennage. This makes the rudder work good and provides enough extra lift that a slower than 1.3 Vso airspeed on short final is fine. With a bit slower airspeed on short final, the elevator is not so heavy in round out and flair. Also with power/pitch we eliminate the need for so much round out and make the landing one continuous deceleration operation. You have a good Christian attitude about the blessings of the time we have on earth. Don't worry about the individual airplane or even all airplanes that much. Flying is the experience and it can be shared long after all the airplanes are gone. The tired ones I owned are gone long ago, but after fifty years since my first I am still going out to the airport and flying with all the new instructors at least once. And yes, they can become an idol. We can think we always must support them, but you have already thought through eventually not having Charlie. Giving Charlie to a grandchild will be a great blessing.

Not only did you give me great feedback and suggestions regarding Airplane, but things to think about, regarding what comes next down the pike in life. I really think you for taking the time to put it all in perspective for me. Re: avionics have you downloaded the test app from Garmin? I've been able to learn a ton using it. And it's free. Way cheaper than learning in the air. Re: Hershey Bar wing: here's the joke that I like: throw a brick out the window and try not to beat it to the ground. I miss my 140 even though the 235 is better in almost every respect. She was my first airplane and I still have more hours in her than all other airplanes combined. The way I think of it is that I'm not an airplane owner. I'm a steward. My goal is to be the best steward for the next person. I think I did well with Maggie. The other thing is to realize that your mission may change and Charlie may no longer be appropriate for your new mission. That's what happened with Maggie. When training was my mission she was great. But not so great for travel. The 235 is a big improvement but I'm already starting to want a 150 knot airplane. Which means retractable gear. When your mission changes it's time to let Charlie go to someone who has a better fitting mission.

      Hey Brother, I love everything about this comment. I especially love when you talk about not thinking about yourself as an Airplane owner, but being a steward. That is a great way to think of it. I definitely will adopt that language when talking about my ownership journey with Charlie. And I completely agree, that as your mission changes, it may mean a change in aircraft. Thank you so much for all that you do to support my journey. I saw where your airport is, I’m going to get down there at some point so I could meet you personally. Take care, and fly well!
