  • I just wanted to throw together a quick video of me performing the "Melt Mod" on my 2007 Nissan Xterra. There aren't many videos of people actually performing this mod so hopefully people find this useful. A heat gun is definitely the better choice for this modification but a torch can be used as well. Be careful to not heat the liner too quickly and check often that you are not burning a hole through the plastic. I STRONGLY RECCOMEND YOU KEEP A FIRE EXTINGUISHER ON HAND FOR THIS MODIFICATION.
    1. I turn the X-terra on and rotate the wheels to give more access to the fender liner
    2. I remove the retaining screws and mud flap along the fender
    3. I gently tap the metal tabs under the fender liner approximately 1/4" with a claw hammer
    4. I replace the retaining screws on the fender liner.
    5. I gently heat and remold the fender liner to give greater clearance for the 33's
    6. I hold the liner until it cools enough to retain its shape
    Tools Required:
    Hammer
    Phillips head screwdriver
Heat source (Heat Gun, Hair Dryer, Torch, Lighter, etc)
Any non-flammable object to press the liner while heating
Disclaimer - I am not a professional mechanic, and I do not recommend anyone modify their vehicle without the appropriate knowledge and taking appropriate safety precautions. I am not responsible for anyone choosing to modify their own vehicle. If someone attempts this modification and causes damages, it is their responsibility. I simply wanted to share how I performed the melt mod on my personal vehicle to fit my new tires.

No need to hammer ! I did not even take off the mud flap, I just did the melt mod and 285 75 16s fit and did not rub.

Tackling mine this weekend. Did you try the other side without the hammering? I had not heard that was necessary. Thanks for posting it.

I did the hammering on both sides. Just some moderate taps to bend the tabs a bit. Basically just puts the fender liner on the final angle you're trying to achieve without having to stretch it any more.
If you don't tap it in then you'd be more likely to burn a hole/rip/tear the thermoplastic because it would need to stretch further

@@doughodgins1836 Makes perfect sense. Didn't get around to doing mine but will shortly. Cheers.

I live in Pa and I am afraid I’ll mess something up. Would a speed shop or a body shop do something like that?

what tire size did you install?, Im thinking to go from 265 70 16 to 265 75 16 on my xterra, just wonder if I need to do the same

The most common 33 for the Xterra is 285 75 16 (32.8in), which will rub without melt mod or lift. 32s (265 75 16, 31.6in) will fit fine.

Any update on the melt mod? Did it stay in place? Is your X stock or lifted? Video walk around would be good to see. Thanks.

Still in place. Not lifted in the video, new duratracs have no clearance issues.
I might do a quick walk around video for you with the new tires if you're interested.
Lift should be coming in the next couple weeks.

Awesome. Yea definitely would like to see the upgrades. I just got my Xterra a couple days after your video. It already has ATs which looks decent but at the stock size. Thinking about getting suspension first then replacing the tires.

Do you have to do the rears too?

Why doesn't anyone wash their car before doing this?? And 15 extra mins to take off tire makes it SO much easier. Drives me nuts!
