Clearing 33x12.50 R15 on Stock 15x7 Rims with 2004 Nissan Xterra

  • So you want some 33x12.50 R15 tires on your stock 15x7 Nissan Xterra rims. It can be done, although it is not a recommended configuration by tire shops due to the narrow rim width. Some high lights of what you need to consider:
    1) Any trim on the rear wheel wells that may be rubbing on the inboard side of the tire
    2) The rear tires will be rubbing on the frame rails during extreme limits of axle flex and articulation. You may want to consider wheel spacers or reduced back space rims.
    3) Trim plastic on mud flap trim behind the front tires.
    4) Adjust steering stops to limit the steering arc. You need to keep the edges of the tires out of the lower control arms, brake line cover, and frame rails.

    Some 1" spacers would fix all that steering issue. I've been running some, myself. I wanted to see how I'd like them. However, I'm still waiting on my body lift, so there is some rubbing, especially since my wheels also have 4.5" back spacing instead of 5.5. But they look so good lol. I should have my body lift kit by Tuesday, so I can take care of that too.

    Another great video, thank you. Do you know of where I can get a limited slip front differential for my 2001 xterra. I was told by one company that use to carry them that they have not been able to get them for the past 10 years. ARB front and rear lockers are expensive and really do not want to go that far if I can avoid it. Thank you again for all the great videos on 1st gen xterras.

      Check out calmini.com under drive train components. www.calmini.com/detail.php?b=1&m=1&t=3&p=469&n= --- never used them before but google brought them up. R200A Front Limited Slip Differential is what you are looking for.
      Never heard much about them...personally, I would go Lokka in the front for half the price and be done. But if you are in NorCal...snow may be a factor and maybe you want to avoid a fully locked diff in the front. Rear axle...you may have to go junk yard diving.

    Did you have to regear for the bigger tire size? And is I were to add a 2.5 inch lift as well as spacer would I have to regear? I don’t do any crazy offrroading, only if I have to reach a location on a muddy road

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  3 роки тому +1

      You don't HAVE to re gear. I did not because it is expensive. But it will make your truck slower. For first gen xterras with 3.3 liter engine...it is already pretty slow. But I also have lots of steel armor and weight to carry also. Lift height wont change gearing...just tire size and gears...and tire and rim weight.

    • @Caseywollman
      @Caseywollman 3 роки тому +2

      Xterra Rob thanks, I’ve got a second gen. And just to clarify, the rehearing makes the truck slower and is generally done to improve off-road capabilities?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  3 роки тому

      @@Caseywollman big tires effectively changed your gearing ratio and makes your truck slower on street. Re gearimg your axles compensates for the bigger tires so it drives on the street similar to stock. You can re gear your transfer case which makes 4wd slower which gibes you more torque to crawl over rocks slowly without revving up your engine...but that's not really related to tires.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  3 роки тому +1

      With a 2nd gen...the engine is much more powerful and drives faster. It can handle bigger tires without impacting on road streetability as much. I wouldnt even consider re gearing unless you just have lots of money and dont know what else to spend it on.

    Did you buy or fabricate your front bumper? I'm fixing to mount a winch to my 01 xterra and was thinking about mounting it behind the factory bumper.... Don't really want to spend $800 - $1000 on a bumper, would rather put that $ towards a locker.

    • @XterraRob

      Bought it from local fabricator. I recommend Craigslist or local offroad clubs / forums for local fabricators or someone that does side work. Thats the best deal in my opinion. $450 for my front set up.

      @XterraRob  3 роки тому

      4x4parts.com ... Called gap guards for after a 2 inch body lift. They fit OK but are kind of pricey. I have seen other people make one from a rubber utility mat or something similar. That's probably difficult too though just because the material is tough to cut.

    Hey Rob. I have a little hiccup. I replaced my OEM bumpstops with the ultra low pro red stops. And now after installing my calmini uca. I dont know how much space.to leave. I remember it is 1/2" gap with stock stops but not sure where to start. Thanks

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 роки тому

      Around 1 ish should be OK. The biggest thing is do you have a reinforced steering system? If not, then it is very tough to hold an alignment with the tie rods at extreme angles. I have a couple of older videos on steering systems and lifted alignments. Gotta look out for tie rods binding on the frame if you droop them too much. If your steering system is solid, you could go. A little more lift...just remember its always temping to keep lifting if the bump stops allow, but it causes other issues with CV angles, tie rods binding on the frame, and alignment.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  4 роки тому

      Also, the half inch gap isnt a written in stone rule. If you can get a good alignment, your steering system can handle the angles, and your CVs don't pop and clunk, you are OK

    32" are big enough with that much lift... unless you're running in mud and have more travel.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  3 роки тому +1

      32s look small...but maybe a 32 x 11.50. I previously had 265 75 16 and they looked like donuts on a 3 in suspension lift and 2 inch body lift. They worked fine though. I think 33x10.50 is my favorite size for my truck but the options are limited.

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  2 роки тому

      I would not personally...go for lift first. Depends if you are OK with rubbing over speed bumps and trimming stuff including sheet metal. 32s should fit with some minor plastic trimming. But they look small with a 3" SL and 2"BL. I would decide your lift first and then decide on the most appropriate tire. I didnt get 33s until after I had lifted though...so I can't confirm how they will fit stock. Probably not great.

    I have a 2” body lift on my 03 but no suspension lift. How important is the suspension lift when it comes to running tires this size?

    • @XterraRob
      @XterraRob  3 роки тому +1

      Body lift helps the most...but even with 2 in body lift and 3 inch suspension lift, I still rub on the fronts when flexing upwards. I would run 32 x 11.50 R15 with just a body lift. 33s look cool but it can cause other down stream issues (steering system reinforcement, power loss, street drivabilith, etc )
