Irons is an amazing villain for several reasons, but mainly because he appeals to what people think is right and wrong. The reason his betrayal works so well is because the player so far has only seen the positives of a person who doesn't need any kind of governmental approval and is doing what is "right" by their standards. Then the player is given a cold hard look at the reality of a person who doesn't care about rules and regulations and wields absolute power, Irons does what he believes is right even if by everyone else's standards it's monstrous. Advanced Warfare teaches the player a lesson about giving 1 person complete control over everything and expecting them to be a great person as well.
9:54 I love the cinematography in this scene. The fear and concern in the man’s voice. Irons’s “no” which makes the characters freeze, but Irons eases the concern into reassurance when he says they will “tell everyone”. Then when the audience feels he’s going to stop the attacks, he turns around and shoots him. Along with the camera angle where your character is standing, Irons walks around the man and pats his shoulder, where you can’t see his face. Not seeing his appearance anymore creates this feeling that the meeting is over and he is going to sort out the situation. So when he does turn around and shoot him, his face reveals the true layer under his character. And Gideon’s shocked “fuck me!” reaction coincides with the audience’s shocked reaction. It makes the kill and his character reveal more intense. The campaign really does feel like a cinematic thriller (and action) movie.

Irons is such a duality of writing. He can sometimes boldly spit out facts about this world....and then become the most eye-rolling corporate bad guy with fascist undertones in the next scene, hitting every possible cliche along the way. That last scene, "I won't kill you, I'm not a monster". Oh goody, my eyes could not have rolled further into my head.
I think the scene you refer to ("I'm not a monster") is actually great, it shows how someone like Irons is convicted in his cause, and how deeply it shows he believes himself to be acting with good intentions, that he is doing the "right" thing by sparing Mitchell. Actually is a pretty well developed character, and the story as a whole, of course, has an allegorical exploration of the failings of partisanship and American bureaucracy to effectively govern itself, and all of this is contrasted with the, as you aptly put it, dark fascist undertones. So while Irons makes seemingly good arguments, his presumption that man "doesn’t want freedom" wants to "have rules" and a leader that "can keep chaos at bay," is a straw man argument. Any of his arguments really are straw man arguments. -- even if he is persuasive, he is logically flawed and amoral. Because his logic is flawed, he doesn’t recognize that morality is a part of being human. When Iron states "because of all the worldviews, nothing gets done."(pp) While also saying that he is right; he is asserting himself as a moral authority. He gives no consideration to being wrong, but also believes ending thousands of lives via Manticore wasn't morally correct, but rather logically sound. Yet proudly asserts that he's not a monster by "sparing" one life. I think the narrative is overall sound for conveying the depth of a character, albeit clunky in the overly opinionated parts, I agree with you, I think overall it still does a pretty good job of conveying the story while engaging the audience in a deeper narrative, and ultimately I think that's what media is really for. The cutscenes were as good as MW19's, not bad for a 2014 game
One of the best and most understandable bad guys in da Cod franchise
Makarov is best . I relate to him
@@VickyCruz how so?
@@CJPooz that was a troll lol
Even in a game Spacey fuckin nails it
Press F to pay respects to Kevin Spacey's performance
I’d work for atlas just off the business card alone that joint tight
That business card probably costed $200. Factoring inflation into it based on the games time period you're looking at probably $800 to a grand easy
Pfffft wait until you see Paul Allen’s card. It’s subtle off white colouring alone will make you want to work for Pierce and Pierce for free.
@@sanguinor5609 so good I want to go to London with him
Damn cutscenes hold up after 8 years
Why do the villains always make the most sense?
Because maybe, just maybe, they were actually right all along? Good and bad are a matter of perspective after all.
Only god tier villans do because they're the villains you can identify with
Because people would rather comfort
Because the devil always plays it logically and realistically. It is charismatic and compelling. However, these are half truths and half lies.
It is a prevalent narrative all throughout myths and stories of the past.
Because people are simply too stupid to listen to anyone other than their own voices.
I was today years old when I realized The General in this was Arthur Griffin from Big Time Rush 🤣
Looking back at what Underwood was planning to do after his stint at the White House in House of Cards, this seems to be the closest we can get to a continuation from Season 5. Underwood was looking beyond politics at that point, and was looking to shift his focus into the private sector in an attempt to control Claire and the White House. Definitely a better alternative than the mildly interesting Season 6 they gave us. I was only there for Stamper lol
Who doesn’t love Stamper?
Always sad when you play as the bad guy and kill the good guy at the end.
yeah, literally
Except thats not the case here, atleast if you surpassed the age of 16
But then you grow up and realize how much this guy has in common with real dictators, they all think they can save the world.
This is kind of what would have happened when Frank Underwood resigned his presidency and went into the private sector
Man, Kevin Spacey might be the best actor ever.
That's true It really sucks that he's a gay weirdo though
The graphics of this game looks beautiful.
Spacey for President.
1:51 "here in the future business cards costs $800 each. You're welcome"
"So what are we in, some kind of advanced warfare?"
I forgot advanced warfare was where the press f meme came from
18:52 Okay, getting so close to Kevin Spacey is making me uncomfortable.
How ironic
You know what's weird when I first played this game on my Xbox 360 I was a minor and I never felt uncomfortable when Kevin spacey's character got so close to Mitchell the main character whose eyes you play most of the campaign seeing through as
The birth of "F for respect"
i wouldnt be surprised if someone rises to power like this. It's kind of realistic in a sense as time goes on and people see that the world's politicians don't get anything done quickly or efficiently enough to matter
Here we have another villain who did make sense and was right about many things.
No matter what someone does they are always a villain in someone's story and in my story he would be a hero if he was real
@@ilyash6557 Preach!
"The best weapon you have is the one between your ears, use it"
“Are we developing the weapon? No we are not … because we’ve already developed it.” 😂😂😂
the graphics are amazing
“On whose authority??”
“ON MY AUTHORITY”
That shit goes hard
I stoped playing Advance warfare when I realized he was the enemy, I really liked him.
Kevin Spacey is really wonderful
Honestly one of the best campaigns I’ve played outside of og MW and BO
Irons is such a great character he knows what’s right sadly that damn Mitchell kills him
Holy shit, look at these graphics... 10 years ago, hard to believe.
I always wondered. How did Irons find out about Ilona, Gideon, and Mitchell watching the recording when Ilona had a scrambler? Did the scrambler not actually work like it was supposed to?
Hes in control of everything including his own skeletons. You think he will relinquish power to a simple scrambler meeting by his own cooperation on an action he did? He's maintained powers , monitoring, and was actually the definition of a real man in charge who knew everything that was going on in his company every step of the way which is why ATLAS was so successful due to good management.
Perhaps that’s what got them to investigate? Seeing cameras down will get security to investigate.
"Bigger than me or you", Irons is very similar to Illusive man from Mass Effect. I think there was some inspiration taken for this game.
Kevin Spacey played Putin very well
I love that Gideon Emery is just Gideon for his character.
I want this game remastered for modern console but Kevin Spacey is in it so that's never going to happen.
I played this on the ps3. I was blown away, i never thought that toaster could play games like this.
Damn Spacey is good wish we had more of him
This was the first campaing i played as a child i still like the game
One of the few games where you play as the villain to stop the hero.
Does anybody else agree with kevin spacey
I do 🙋🏻♂️
I only agree on Jonathan Irons, so...
I do
He lacks the spiritual virtues of the Christian faith, the pragmatism of a true Machiavellian, and the nuances of a great charecter, but he had some solid points. 7/10 libertarians
I would def fight for the villain.
You would fight for Mitchell ?
I like how the player wanted to skip the pay respects part but the game forces you to as to take note of the missing left arm in relation to the continuation of the story later on.
3:25 "what you're seeing is Advanced Warfare"
"You must answer to the CALL OF DUTY"
Ahh the game where Press F to pay respects was born.
When I saw the first few frames the only thing I thought about was „Press F to pay respects“
Jonathan Irons was such a good villain
The graphics of the cutscenes are incredible
its like movie if u watch full video
