Neil has always been my favorite. In early 80's I remember going to see Rush and before concert and walking behind stage and gazing at his Kit. Me and my friends just loved watching him play. thanks Stephen for this lesson. :)
Tough work here brother, but you pull it off superbly. A suggestion: Malignant Narcissism has some great drum breaks that you could breakdown. Keep up the great work!
He usually flams that back and forth between the kick and the snare too, usually with the floor toms. Like Hemispheres, Red Barchetta, Cygnus X--1, etc. Unashamed Rush nerd here. Really enjoying this series.
davedalessandro8189 Dalessandro I had forgotten the big Peart phase I went through in my teens. This whole series has reminded me of that. I’m ok with being “old”...
It amazes me how well you can pull apart drum beats down to the style and finess of that particular drummer. Good job man. Ill be watching alot more of your videos
Total pro. You are just as amazing at teaching as you are at the drumming itself. I'm very thankful that you give your time to help people learn. Anytime I can help via donations I totally will.
Growing up every drummer wanted to be like him...NOT ME..I knew I could never drum at that level..so I just concentrated at my own level and still do at this day..I'm 62 now and have been playing since age 8..yes I still enjoy it.
This is really rad. Great work transcribing these fills, let alone learning to play them. My only "complaint" if I can really call it that is those crashes in the La Villa Strangiato fill are actually hi hat barks in the studio recording. Idk if you watched a live version like Pinkpop, A Show Of Hands, or Time Machine and it had those crashes instead of barks; but going by the studio version, they are barks if I'm not mistaken. Please don't take this as anything overtly negative, I'm seriously loving the series so far! It's nice to relive my early days trying (largely failing) to learn these drum parts on my old, rickety 5-piece TKO set with just hi hats and a crash lol. Keep up the great work, Stephen!
Lol, you're correct. Just listened back. The sheet music I linked is correct though. I just read that voice wrong. Sharp ear! I filmed 7 Neil Peart lessons in a row, so there were a lot of notes to keep up with lol!
DUDE, Neil was so good. i am enjoying your utbe videos . im 63 and have found an attraction to the drums and classical rock and am practicing . any recomendations for a beginner my age? ha ha!
Love the serious man! That drum kit, yeah I remember it because I was a Rush geek and as a drummer first live show was Signals tour in 82 last was the Clock Work Angles tour...so SWEET how your doing these!! Thank YOU!!!
One other thing...my grip is not what it used to be so being a wood turner I make custom sticks that are easier for me to hold..based on Promark 5b natural..but with eight inches from the handle they are a lot thicker...matched hickory..or maple..
nice video bro!!!!!! really enjoy it!!! I have a drum idea XD please do a video about playing relaxed!!! In order to finding a unique voice over the instrument is crucial to have that skill!!! im struggling with it! im in the way of achieve that but is a long way home!!! I know that your advice will be great to meditate
The way Neil plays and is coordinated around his kit really inspired me to play drums. Even though I'm in a pop punk band, I draw a lot of inspiration from his style of playing and really brings a fuller sound to the band than your typical drummer. Do you think you could break down the Neil Peart drum solo by any chance? I know that one is a doozy 😂
@@StephenTaylorDrums When I commented I didn't know there was a lot more solos from him. I apologize for my lack of knowledge. But the one I keep watching, is his drum solo in Frankfurt. I assumed that since it had so many views on UA-cam, most of the solos were the same. But I was wrong.
@@nickspud1612 - I like the Frankfurt solo, too. But you should also check out the classic solo in All The World's a Stage which was redone on YYZ from Exit..Stage Left, and expanded on YYZ from Show of Hands.
Amazing job breaking these down! Just a small point...on those two crash hits at 13:35; those are played on the hi-hat...either slightly open...or barked. Otherwise...spot on!
He actually plays the hi-hats slightly open in later live shows (I was watching for it when I saw them on their Moving Pictures tour a few years ago....the stamina he has is mind blowing).
Yes! Brzezicki's playing on the first two Big Country albums is freaking incredible. Very busy, very military like, and very groovy all at the same time.
That would be sweet. With all your knowledge, I would like to hear your take on the left hand lead that I have heard about with some the greats. Game Theater Absolutely. Technical difficulty of a part says little about the genius of the player or part. It’s all contextual. Honestly these Peart fills sound ridiculous because they’re out of place. But go listen to the originals and they’re genius. Will is one of the best SONG oriented drummers in the game. Ringo was too. Parts written like a song writer. Will was a piano player before he was a drummer if I’m remembering correctly and this shows in his part creation. I love his stuff. Simple and musical.
I honestly don't know if I could say just one. Brian Blade is pretty high up there. Dave King. Jojo Mayer. Man, there's just no way to narrow it down lol
I’ll check them out! Mine seems to change often when I listen to different types of music, at the moment I’m super influenced by Stewart Copeland. I love the Police
I never considered Peart as a "signature lick" drummer as much as a "signature sound" drummer. His expanse and range of tom tones and assortment of percussive textures in the context of the music is, to my mind at least, is much more recognizable than his licks. Much like Alex Van Halen having an easily recognizable signature sound as opposed to licks. Guys like Charlie Watts, Ringo, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Dave Garabaldi, Corky Lang and Ginger Baker are drummers who I consider easily recognizable by their technique rather than their drum kit sound. Perhaps because their drum kits are, for the most part, of a standard configuration and tuning where as guys like Peart, Stewart Copeland, Alex Van Halen, Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini all have built more elaborate and/or uniquely sounding kits to help set themselves apart. Of course there a few who have combined the technique and tone like Nicko McBrain, Billy Cobham, Tony Williams, Dennis Chambers and Carter Beauford to name a few. Of course there are plenty more drummers to add to each list. I only used these few as examples to express my opinion. Great series Stephen. Looking forward to who else you cover. Peace!
patrick farley he’s absolutely a signature sound...but that sound is made up of signature phrases. You don’t really realize it until you begin breaking smaller parts out and analyzing them.
