I cried off and on for two days when I heard he passed. He'd been a part of my life for 40 years... and I never met him in person. It felt odd, but he was a big inspiration for me in many ways.
This is why Rush is “ Thinking Man’s Music” because, Neil’s delivery of his musical insight is so eloquent and he dissects each step of his songwriting and explains each thought and reason behind each belief he has about his approach. A genuine and creative passion for building songs and with a personal challenging conviction to perfect his craft. This along with Neil’s original drumming style is what made him so unique. There was no superficial, egotistical spirit driving his craft. Just a genuine zest for his art form. Thanks to Neil and Geddy and Alex for the music. Neil Peart University Alumni ( TM).
Neil Peart was without a doubt the greatest drummer of all time , Everytime I hear yyz I get chills what a masterpiece and 2112 greatest album ever rip Neil Peart your never forgotten
I remember George Harrison passing was the first real sadness I experienced with the loss of a hero or well respected musician. Neil’s passing has been unfathomable. Just such an immense loss. For music. Writing. Humanity.
I think you disrespect a person when you mourn their death. You tend to mourn for yourself, not them. Rather, you should celebrate their life. Be grateful that they touched your life.
Oh Neil, you are the best ever period. I still say the best picture of him ,was when he was a very young teenager, sitting behind his small drum set in his pajamas. Would have loved to known him then, and seen were he was talent wise at that time. Then the rest was history. Wow could you even imagine.
What an absolutely brilliant, articulate man. Such a loss. Thank God for recording technology. We can listen to his ideas.....the ones he shares in words ...and the ideas he shares through music....
An amazing Human, a great Student of Percussion, and a Masterful Teacher...you are missed; I'll never tire of your Passion and your vocals in exploring everything beyond the Vibe. No regrets, indeed 💜🇺🇲🇨🇦☮️✌️😎♎♾️
it's so nice to hear him speak in such a joyful tone, this man has experienced such terrible tragedy and to come back from that with his measure of character is beyond belief, he is truly a master by all sense of thought
What was so great about Neil was that he never stopped learning and growing as a musician. Neil, much like Jimi Hendrix, was just void of ego and never felt threatened by other musicians' abilities.. He never felt that he so good that he could not learn from others. RIP, my man. You are missed!
I love when new videos like these surface of him. I miss him. I got into Rush only a few years ago (I'm 18), and I wish they could have released an album after I had become as big a fan as I am today.
What an absolute gem. Neil is a lost breed. He will be studied for eons. His integrity and commitment was something very seldom seen and as time passes, his worth will be missed more and more.
Ya there are many great drummers out there and I respect them all but this guy is at the top. God said...here is your drive, interest and your talent..now go and show the world what a musician is and make me proud...so he did. Mic Drop. Miss him a lot...blessing to Geddy & Alex
You can post a Neil video everyday and I will show up. I could listen to this man the rest of my life and that is what I will do. RIP Professor!!! May your spirit change the hearts of every human being on this planet
To Neil, the greatest musician to ever play an instrument and write a cool song. We love you, and we miss you dearly. There is a big hole now in the world of music. And it won’t ever be filled. RIP Professor, musics dearest friend…….
I recall him taking lessons from Freddie Gruber mid 90s jazz drummer. Using sticks in the traditional style. Hearing him say I took lessons recently blew my mind. LoL
I'm not a drummer, but could listen to Neil talk for hours. He was such an interesting man. I especially like his commentary on "architecture that's detail driven". He wrote the book on that.
0:40-1:20, particularly the part about finding a shorthand method...I was a memoriser for my first 20 years, then one of the many brick walls I hit, this one in late 2019, said, "you need to learn to read". It's given me a new lease of life. I could drone on and on, but as a recording drummer, yeah, I know Neil's problem. Working up an original drum track and notating it for posterity or as a "reminder" for when recording it, yeah, that's easy...but using it during the creative process, I've still to figure that out. Handwriting just cannot keep up with all the rapid fire ideas cycling through your brain. The best use for it I've found is for when having that listen back to what you did yesterday, when all those new ideas that shoot out - I notate them, whether just a note about "do X there" or, if I have the song written up, rubbing out the old part and inserting the new. So, it's good for cataloguing your starting point for what you will try out today.
Who describes their Drumming in this articulate manner?? Nobody. 90+% of Drummers (myself included) Just Hit Shit in a Rhythmic Fashion. (Hopefully) Will Miss Neil 4EVVVVRRRR..
Wait a minute, I forgot a crucial element! Mr. Lifeson. You are in the top 5 of the most talented guitarists of all time. Sorry for that but it's true. "Let your heart be the anchor"
I always think of him as a moral compass for anyone. Such a shame he is not here anymore in person but glad that he was around to begin with. Such a loss.
Everything has been said about his playing but I don't think enough emphasis has been put on how much he worked at his craft. Yes he had certain gifts but he had to work to make those gifts become what they became. It wasn't like he woke up one day and was all of a sudden 1980's YYZ. Neil.
It is impossible to list the regrets you have in life. And, this doesn't really qualify as a regret, per se. For example I have met John Stockton, Karl Malone and Magic Johnson, Eddie Palubinskas. I'm a basketball nut, I'm also a drummer and dreamer. I would have been thrilled to spend 30 min with Mr. Peart on any subject. Do you ever feel that way and with whom, for you, does that apply?

I gather there are insecure, minimally talented musicians out there who have alerts set up so that whenever a new Neil Peart video comes out, they can go and click the Dislike button, to help them feel better about themselves.
could listen to Neil for hours. he has so many great things to say and to learn.
Me too! I do think it's ironic that someone so shy about meeting fans because of "worship" has no problem going on for an hour about drumming.
He truly earned his nickname "the professor"
He was such a beautiful man, I still miss him.
His enthusiasm toward life and drumming is so inspiring.
I cried off and on for two days when I heard he passed. He'd been a part of my life for 40 years... and I never met him in person. It felt odd, but he was a big inspiration for me in many ways.
This man represented the best of the Human spirit, a man who inspired many by striving to be the best HE could be in life.

So well expressed. I agree!
I will always miss Neil. Such a brilliant, intellectual in so many ways.😔

From the time I was 10 years old Neil was like the amazing older brother I never had. Still haven't come to grips with it.

It's so hard to convey the depth of loss to those who haven't been touched by his unique insight into the human experience.

the fact that the title is in past tense depresses me
We need to speak of him in the present tense, just like we do with Buddy. Their influence is timeless and therefore they’ll live forever.
