Thanks for ranking me so high! I think I’m personally overrated as a player but I’m glad you could include me on your list. There are several folks I’d put ahead of myself and a few top players I wish were on the list, but great job with the video!
I don't know his win rates, but one of the best that I have watched play is Stocky Ranger, he has the most insightful initial placements, knowing how to block out other players games while getting his own unique win conditions.
Great video. Nice objective look at the best of the best. It’s a “numbers” game. Catan at first glance seems hopelessly random, but so do the stars in the sky. Closer look shows that there is much more you can count on than you may think!
nice; you've kicked off quite the debate here. Personally, I think the best players I've faced (in no particular order) are YoungNaijah, Shazzy and Hawkeye
Personally I feel bad for Hawkeye and these top players, I have been lucky to play him a few times in a tournament setting and from turn 1 the whole lobby would collude against him. Suffering from success as they say. I don't blame any top player for having a secret account!
What's your opinion on the strength of the top otb players like Quetzal Hernandez vs the online community. Once otb tournaments start up again are all the online players gonna crush?
I think many online players will have to adjust to a few different new aspects on otb Catan, but those are mostly minor things. I think technical game-play has increased a lot with online play over the past two years. I think players who have studied online are going to crush it. I've never played with Quetzal Hernandez, I found him play very well in the finals of the World Championship he won, but also two players on their table had very poor placements. But yea - he played very well himself.
Anyone on this list who has won a national or world championship (and some clearly have) deserve to stake a claim on being in the top 10. If you haven't achieved that yet then you are definitely not in the top 10. KOC and PL are smaller online communities with very strong players no doubt - However, saying these players are the top 10 in the WORLD is a big claim to make and can't be authoritatively determined in a microcosm. Prove your place on the world stage in official tournaments.
I respect your opinion on that officially licensed Catan tournaments are the best way to measure skill over the world. However, I think the low sample-sizes make it difficult. I mean: winning four games in a row can make you the national champion. While I'm basing this research over 100's of games per player. Also comparing between the strengths of different countries is tough. My experience, and with me many others, is that the competition at Nationals is very low compared to KoC/PL. If players can bring me more statistics, I can do more research and bring a better list. So far, I'm going on the stats I can find and my experience of the higher skill-levels in groups that study the game daily. Thank you for making this argument, as I couldn't fit my opinion well into the video. Overall, I wish there were officially licensed tournaments.
I would argue that being a national champion doesn’t merit as much as treeck list as you only have to win a small amount of games compared to what he’s shown here.
An interesting analysis but difficult to take very seriously. The technique heavily favours anybody who participates in KoC (which may well attract the best players for all I know) but what about all the other online tournaments people organise? Are they really less relevant as data points? Also, any tournament that attracts players of a particular ilk will mean that the players are making the "right" moves and that those players are only the best within that particular mindset. Real life tournaments and randomised matches in Catan Universe expose you to weak players who may not make the "correct" moves but whom you still need to overcome as an advanced player. Is that skill relevant or not? Personally, I have lost my Grandmaster ranking more than once in very strange games and sometimes to colluders too. Overall, I think you have set yourself an impossible task. An interesting video but I take it with a pinch of salt.
I think that's indeed the best way to look at this video. It has never been to create a definitive list, but more to create the discussion and present as much data as possible for players to evaluate on.
It can be for Catan online, but not for Catan itself, you are not considering the most important factor of all, which is the human factor (face-to-face factor). It is there when you can interact, speak, persuade etc (and using discord can help, but it doesnt compare at all). The best Catan players in the world are the ones who master that. Here is a list. - Quetzal Hernandez (World Champion) - Enrique Siu (Continental American Champion), - Raul Jimenez (Mexico National Champion) - Sarvat Tahir (Canada National Champion) - Gonzalo Uría (Peru National Champion) Besides, the dice and the algorithm of catan universe is nothing stuck to reality. The 3 comes out more than the 8 on several occasions and that not happen in real life. This is a 70% strategy game and 30% chance, not the other way around
No clue, I don't know how it was calculated. One game can be determined by luck, but the variance can be mitigated a lot - so, over large sample-sizes Catan is more of a skill game than Poker and Hearthstone (in my opinion)

Maybe you're overrated, but stats don't lie
Catan players are just too used to pretending they are not good players xD

I'm a huge fan of Stocky's play, but his win-rates aren't high enough to consider him for this top 10 list.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm looking forward to the 5-6 player extension on Catan Universe.
Yea, me too!
It hasn’t worked for me at all

Yea - it was what I expected to happen. All great players indeed!
Personally I feel bad for Hawkeye and these top players, I have been lucky to play him a few times in a tournament setting and from turn 1 the whole lobby would collude against him. Suffering from success as they say. I don't blame any top player for having a secret account!
If YoungNaijah were to be included, what would their ranking be?
I personally practice and talk with him a lot. I would say number 1 or 2.
I assume in the top 3, but his stats are difficult to evaluate
Cannot wait..!
You won't have for long

@@Treeckosaurus hey! Talking about me 🤣
On catan universe. How can you find how many games you’ve played? Never could find that.
If you hover over your names on the ELO rankings it shows how many games you've played from that specific game mode.
Would you place Boliwimo in the Top15?
Erm...
Hi! How do you know the number of games played on catan universe? I can only see my number of wins ! Thank you so much
Hey Alexandre! I recommend to hover over your ELO-rankings for a specific game mode.
My guess in advance: Kaytwenty 🤩
Perhaps, perhaps!

Is this ranking more accurate than Shades' top25 though? 👀
That's up to the viewer to decide 🙂
Treeck has used statistics, Shades has Shazzy at #14, that's all you need to know

Is savaage53 top 20?
It's an old list. Not at that time.

Top players do not play PL anymore... 😞
That's unfortunate indeed, but I have good faith that they will return.
Don't you think guys sometimes this game can be a 100% of luck. Once i won against treeck with 4 wp not only wp's but the rolls also.
According to a player called 3dsmax the game is 15% luck and 85% skill, based on his win-rate calculations. I don't know how it was calculated.
@@Treeckosaurus so you are 100 skill and opponent 85 skill if you're not lucky that game it means 85/85 a flip coin is it?
