Awwwwww - I was so hoping you guys would do the LIVE version - which will absolutely BLOW you away - with the full orchestra. Please check it out on your own - well worth a listen. But very glad to see you cover this song - it's one of her very best. Hauntingly beautiful.
The City of Angels DOMINATED radio for a very long time on the strength of the and Iris from the Goo Goo Dolls. Those 2 songs really fit the movie like a glove.
Listen to the song again with the knowledge its about an angel falling in love with a human. Lines like "flattered by your fascination with me" and "you speak of love like you've experienced love like mine before"
Epic is correct... Alanis' best song I feel... this song evokes all kinds of emotions and imagery, but when it reaches it's intense crescendo it almost has Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' vibe, it's cinematic in it's scope.
There's a haunting motif stressed by three notes: G, B flat, and B. And then when the orchestra kicks in, you get this Arabian/Egyptian vibe. Very DISSONANT TENSION!!!
Which notes are you referring to? You can't mean that 4 note pattern on the piano that repeats throughout the song? Because then you'd mean Eb Bb B and Bb, assuming your Bb and B are correct, which let's just assume they are. Not having perfect pitch, I can't tell what key this is in just by listening, I only have relative pitch. Or did you mean 3 other notes? Just curious, not attacking. Cheers!
The whole song is influenced by Eastern/Indian music. Not just the strings, but also the percussion (Indian tabla) and the verse melody, second verse in particular. This was the first song Alanis released after her trip to India, and the influence is clear.
@@rpvee another song from Alanis with the eastern/arabic/indian vibe is the end track to Prince of Persia "I remain". Another good one. Not as good as this one, which I adore, but also good. The soundtrack to Prince of Persia is actually pretty good overall.
I love you guys. My favorite Alanis song. It's so beautiful, so haunting, and it gives me goosebumps every time. I also hope you do "Thank U", which runs a close second. Some of my other faves (and I'm guessing I'm not alone) are "You Learn", "All I Really Want", and "Wunderkind" (from the first Chronicles of Narnia movie).
Yes!!!!! I think "Supposed former Infatuation Junkie" is a vastly underrated album. I think "Thank you" or "Baba" would be great songs for them to listen to next.
Thank you for reminding me about "Wunderkind". It is the last song as the credits ended. I'm a big CS Lewis fan and my oldest daughter read all 7 of the Narnia books and we had discussions adout the books compared to the movies. It lead to doing the same with Harry Potter, Hunger Games etc.... The best part of being a father is watching their ideas and opinions develope. .
If you’re doing movies as well, you may want to watch the movie this song came from: City of Angels with Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. The soundtrack is actually better than the movie.
Memory: best friend & I saw this at the dollar theatres. When this movie ended, no one in the audience moved and spoke for a good minute. We were all stunned.
All I kept saying was “don’t pause it right before the break, don’t pause it.” And Jay paused it. But so glad y’all reacted to this, favorite Alanis song for me!
I was fortunate enough to see her last year. It was an Anniversary for Jagged Little Pill that had been postponed due to Covid the year before. It was excellent with Garbage opening. That's another one that you should check out. Shirley Manson has an excellent voice.
I bet I’m not the only Alanis fan that when you hit pause after the last quiet part right before the instrumental was like, “You did NOT just pause it!” 😂
Great song! Love Alanis! I'd describe her voice in general as piercing but in this song it is quite chilling. She's definitely my favorite female artist of the nineties and maybe even all time.
Alanis started out on a kid show "You Can't Do That on Television". When she was 19 she dated Dave Coulier from "Full House". Rumer was Morissette wrote “You Oughta Know” about him. She said she will not confirm that .... maybe one day.
I think it was confirmed by Coulier himself. Specifically he remembered "I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner" really happening when she called him during a dinner party. Again, I think it was him but it might have been her. Either way one of them said that actually did happen
I was in my 20s during the 90s which by the way is an amazing time to be in your 20s! Of course, I was a huge Alanis Morissette fan, but this song right here is lyrically and musically genius!
Started as a Canadian young pop singer. She was hurt by relationship, faded for bit. Her Album, "Jagged Little Pill " was her coming out as a grown woman. She took control. Completely different from her earlier work. She addressed the pain
Yo guys made my Friday 😂😂😂 I was waiting for months for you guys to do this song! When you did Ironic I was super happy but this is my favorite song by her. She’s so ridiculously talented, and as others said in comments, her live version of this is amazing as well☺️☺️☺️ Thank you for doing this.
Her first hit was a pop song...very in keeping with the times. "Too Hot". Feeling she wasn't in control of the way she wanted her career to go...she "took over" and created the musical career that fit her writing style. Another Canadian musical wonder. 😉
I come back and listen to this again and again cause I react to those swelling violins in this song exactly the same way Jay does...it fills me up.....wow...
I love everything about this song, from the haunting single piano notes to Alanis's pleading voice to the revving up with the cellos and violins and screaming guitar. It's epic and gorgeous and powerful. I love a lot of her faster-paced songs, but this one is probably my favorite of all because it's just so phenomenal. Stunning. SO glad you liked it!! Some other songs of hers that I really love: All I Really Want Perfect Hand in My Pocket Wake Up Thank U Are You Still Mad That I Would Be Good (this one breaks my heart, it's sad and beautiful and angsty, and I really felt that when I was a teen, lol) One Would Not Come Hands Clean and her cover of the Police song "King of Pain"
Great reaction..and you're right..she writes all her own songs and lyrics and also changes which syllable she emphasizes as she sings. She is incredible!!! Probably 9ne of my top 3 female voices / singer. You've just barely scratched the surface of her catalogue. Other songs to check out are: head over feet, hands clean, thank you, Guardian, everything, reasons I drink, ablaze, empathy, receive, lens, not as we..
She has the most unique voice, it takes you to another place in your head. With the strongest emotions. J was just listening and tears just started coming out of his eyes. That’s pure Alanis!!
I hate to pick a favourite Alanis Morissette song, but this would likely come out on top for me, the clash of her beautiful voice against the creepy agitated music I think is what does it, it's a masterful piece of music.
Ms Morissette and I are the same age. I swear, every album has hit me in what I was living through at that time in my life. I’m so glad new generations are discovering her greatness. Thank you for this.
Such a great song. I highly recommend doing another reaction to this song where she performs it Live at the Grammys. Powerful and haunting performance.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. You could react to the movie "City of Angels". It's got an awesome soundtrack as you already know and the movie is a classic in my opinion. Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage. Fantastic reaction.

another great alanis song love this song she did god brings back so many memories she's is just amazing.and this song omg love it sing it alanis tell them feel the passion in her voice the feelings and her amazing singing voice awesome
When Jay said she has a Godly voice, it made me think back to when Alanis played God in the movie Dogma. Definitely go and check out the live version of this song, and anything else live when it's Alanis. Her amazing voice and yodel really come through live and she's usually backed up by a fantastic orchestra. I suggest the live version of "That I Would Be Good" next. It's a wonderfully positive song about negative situations...always stay positive and know that you will be good. 😊
The first time I heard this song, when it was first released, it woke me up playing on my radio alarm. I’m normally slow to wake, but I sat bolt upright and was OBSESSED. Fun fact: this song was on the City of Angels soundtrack, which had a lot of interesting songs by various artists.
My favorite Alanis song!👍 More Female Friday suggestions: Natalie Merchant (Carnival); Fiona Apple (Criminal); Edie Brickell (What I Am); and a more contemporary group, Our Native Daughters (Quesheba, Quesheba). 🎶
When I listen to this, I like to notch the volume up in the silent pause right after she says "give me a moment to deliberate", so it comes crashing back.
The LIVE Grammy Version is just OFF THE FUCKING CHAIN!!!
She’s the only singer that I’ve heard that breaks up the words in her phrasing. She draws you in to find out what the word is.
Very few people could pull off those lyrics. I know if I tried they would be incredibly awkward but for her it's effortless.
Bjork does this as well
Iron and wine... Thank me later
Dolores O’Riordan.
This is definitely my favorite of he’s songs. Her vocals are stunning.
Any normal Canadian LOVES Alanis morissette.
She’s incredible and we know it.
Any normal person should
She wrote all of her own music. The composition of her work is amazing
"But THIS is not allowed." Wonderful.

Alanis has an amazing way of phrasing her vocals. One of my all time favorite singers.

she is so fantastic live, she's definitely taken care of her voice

This is an epic song. The movie "City of Angels" is so heartbreaking - you really should see it. You would get a true understanding of these lyrics.
Epic is correct... Alanis' best song I feel... this song evokes all kinds of emotions and imagery, but when it reaches it's intense crescendo it almost has Led Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' vibe, it's cinematic in it's scope.
The only good thing of about that movie is the soundtrack. And of course, Uninvited is the best song on the soundtrack.
Agreed; the song fits the theme of the movie - about "forbidden" love.
Note, though, that the movie is a remake of the German movie "Wings of Desire"
Please explain the meaning im lazy
City of Angels is such a good m movie. Thanks for doing this version.
This is on the City of Angels movie soundtrack. The entire sound track is AMAZING!!!
Agreed! Though I’m not a fan of Paula Cole, her song Feelin’ Love is one of the sexiest songs I’ve ever heard.
@@pacebrison1453 Totally!!!
Amazing song by Alanis. The instrumental portion of it is so powerful & very intense.
