This is my favorite song by Alanis. This was the first song she released following the mind-blowing success of her album Jagged Little Pill (6 hit singles, 5 Grammys, youngest artist to go diamond, etc). I can’t imagine what kind of pressure she must’ve felt to follow up that album but she killed it. This song is a masterpiece.
This song was written for the movie (CITY OF ANGELS) with Meg Ryan and Nicholas CAge. After watching the movie the song really makes sense. He was uninvited!
Alanis IS her own style for sure! The lyrics of this particular song is perfectly paired with the dark and moody orchestra, as well as her delivery of them! LOVE
This is the reaction I’ve been waiting for since I saw you find Alanis! She is most definitely Canadian and, from what I understand, a national treasure. So happy you did this particular performance. The power in her voice is chilling. Love the confidence to belt out this banger of a song in front of a full orchestra knowing they wouldn’t drown her out. Who but Alanis could do it? When you described it as “what’s around the corner” I immediately knew what you meant lol because it’s difficult to put into words what she does with her voice. Thanks, again. Your reaction did not disappoint.
Alanis, Celine Dion and Shania Twain are all Canadian and were all at the top of the music charts in the mid-90s at the same time. They all have different styles and genres of music yet are all amazing singers.
She is Canadian! but she definitely has a unique vocal inflection that is so specific to her. Her live version of "That I would be good" is so pretty too
You know, being a teenager when she burst on the scene, she kind of was 'just another good singer' in a sea of great 90s bands and singers. It isn't until a few decades later that I realize just how amazing her uniqueness, songwriting, and voice really was. I liked her music and can sing a lot of her songs, but I feel like I missed out by not paying a little more attention to her at the time. Also, I accidentally say "Canadia" too sometimes. 😂
She is from Ottawa Ontario Canada. Ottawa is the Capital City of Canada. I am the same age as her and back in the day she was a teen pop singer. I still own her first two teen pop CD's. She sings this song about listening to Rod Stewart in rain . . . great song. That teenage nonsense was hushed up when she released the album Jagged Little Pill. Her voice and her music, rightly, and deservedly so, shot in to the stratosphere. Back in the 90's she did something that only a dreamer could dream of. She has been called "The voice of a generation." She does deserve that title. A little girl from Ottawa Ontario Canada. You don't get far on dreams alone. You get that far by working your and spilling her guts out. There is a long history of Canadian recording artists doing that. She made the biggest and loudest bang ever.
Alanis is from Canada, but when she sings her voice sounds has an Irish accent and overtone. Simply beautiful. This musical arrangement has certain segments & rhythms with the guitars and violins, that are similar to Led Zepplin's, 'Kashmir,' and 'All of my love.' Britt your hair is popping!!!
One of my favorite things about Alanis is how she can take one word and make three lines out of it, lol. She's also a very talented songwriter - I recommend 'That I Would Be Good', 'Simple Together', 'Unsent', 'Sympathetic Character', and 'Hands Clean'. Regarding her unique sound, the only other vocalists that I could compare Alanis to would be Aurora and Allison Krauss for that ethereal, other-worldly quality.
I’m glad you did the live version. She is unique and talented. Great song writer. True artist…singer, songwriter, composer, vocalist and yes, she plays instruments as well.
Your analysis of Alanis's voice, music and lyrics is the closest I've ever heard to be able to put into words how her songs made those of us feel who grew up with relationship angst in the '90s. Her "Jagged Little Pill" was probably the fastest CD purchase I ever made. Britt, you rock-and every other musical genre as well! 🌟
She always brings to mind a banshee. The mythical spirits that wail out their pain and anger to all who would listen. And capture their prew while doing so!
Alanis Morissette was born in the Capitol of Canada, Ottawa, where English and French are the official languages. She lived in Germany from 3 to 6 years old, that could be a source for playing with pronunciation. She had a few pop hits up North as a teen then "Jagged Little Pill" set the World on 🔥. On the topic of accents, I sum it up like this... What is the difference between a New Yawker and a Canadian? New Yawker : "Eh, Get outta the way!" Canadian : "Get outta the way, eh!" How do you spell Canada? C, eh, N, eh, D, eh. RUSH!!! 🤘 &
Love the instrumental on this song, it's so menacing, it's like a war between the vocals and instruments. I have tried for over 20 years to describe Alanis and you using Mystical total hit with me!😂 Great reaction!
My entire 20yrs old era has been Alanis! This was back in early 2000's. I was thee fan 1000% back then. Became a mother soon after Alanis's peak. She is a part of my historty.😊🔴🔴🔴
She's Canadian...............the song is in reference to a relationship she was involved in with an older man when she was still a minor...that's why the haunting music !!
That's why the music conveys danger, lust, and a haunting musical build up................in the final musical passage Alanis is saying ...yes, she will continue the relationship. She was with that man for several yeasrs
It is my favorite Alanis song. I first heard it when I watched the movie, “City of Angels”, with Meg Ryan & Nicholas Cage. Watch the movie and the song lyrics makes more sense. A haunting song.
I understand exactly what your saying......Alanis is a unique artiste....this has the same mystical feel to it as Led Zepplin's "Cashmere" has... Great reaction again👏👏
Miss Britt, believe me I do understand what you say. I collect great singers. Alanis among them; Amy Lee, Sharon dan Adel, Clare Maguire, Minniva and the lady whose songs I am enjoying at the moment, Annaca. Her voice is haunting. I hope you get round to enjoying any of these ladies work, they are at the top of their game.
I think it so awesome how you welcome by too the party so awesome great song love the voice too thank you so much for sharing your video with us love it Britt.🌹👍
Britt, I'm right with you when it comes to Alanis and this is by far my favorite song by her because of the range she shows and the strings that accompany her. This song is great and it was written for the movie soundtrack call the "City of Angels" which by the way is a great soundtrack as well. The movie is actual good as well. Love the reaction. Alanis is Canadian.
Been a fan of here’s since Jagged Little Pill came out. Her voice is beautiful. So comforting. She can sing anything. For fun you should listen to her take on Black Eyed Peas - My Humps.
Another reaction channel I watch sometimes is Brad and Lex. Brad is a hard sell on a lot of the artists they watch but he fell head over heels for Alanis! She's incredible with a very unique voice and singing style.
This song was a part of the movie, "city of angels", which I watched with my former girlfriend. As she sings in this song, I found Alanis to be intriguing . Maybe even a little alluring. My musical tastes have a broad range and my son cannot understand how I can be drawn to her music at the age of 65 and having grown up in a traditional country/gospel music family.
A friend of mine is in a band that was the headliner for our Canada Day celebration about ten years ago. He performed his very alt-rock tunes with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra filling out his group. It was one of the many highlights of his career! So yes, I can only guess that Alanis was more than likely stoked to hear her song played by an orchestra!
I worked at a radio station when this song dropped. It was so popular we played it at the top AND bottom of every hour for two weeks. That's crazy, and I've heard not one other song has ever had that type of play time during its rise and time at #1 Also: the whole accent comment... it's the way she breaks up the words she sings. I guess the way she enunciates each word.
Yes I understand where you are coming from. The song is eerie. If you get a chance to watch the movie you will totally understand the eeriness of the song. Perfect powerful
She is considered one of the greatest female singers of her generation, She wrote sang and produced one of the biggest selling albums of all time... She is a savant....
This song is incredible live... City of angel" soundtrack one of the best movie soundtracks of alltime , She dominated the 90's , If you liked this, you would love The cranberries..
Am so glad you took the advice from those of us who suggested this song after you reacted to You Outta Know . The orchestra sound gives. Such a beautiful haunting sound.
Britt, you have to go watch her perform this song live in concert!! It's amazing!!! They turn on a strobe light and she does a crazy headbang dance!! Originally it was meant to be about Meg Ryan's character in City of Angels resisting the romantic feelings of an angel.....but in the play about her music, "Jagged Little Pill", a musical play that you can go watch right now too, they make this song about someone overdosing on drugs. It's really powerful there too. But yeah you gotta watch her perform this live. 🙂
Alanis is Canadian. She finished high school in Toronto, Canada. Her Name suggests a French descent but nothing is sure. She moved to the US quite early so it might explain a little the undefined accent.
As a Canadian who used to train vocally, I can say that a lot of us tap into an almost latent accent when singing. It's actually kinda funny, because it tends to be a different accent than we have while speaking. Being surrounded by other cultures and languages our whole lives means that we tend to play more with the sounds and inflections of words while singing than you might expect. So she has that rich vocabulary of sound to draw on, and it's rather like giving a kid crayons. She could sing every word the same way and just draw the outlines in black. Or, she could add lots of colors to create a musical mosaic that says so much more than just, "it's a cat." I think of it as playing your voice like an instrument. If you sing professionally like she does, you can use changes in your voice to add extra layers and textures to your song, to your message. If she sang this song straight and didn't play with her delivery, changing tones, inflection, and pronunciation, among other things, the song wouldn't have the same feel or give the same emotional effect. The reason it's so memorable and distinctive is because she got so creative and played her voice like another instrument in the band. Pretty cool and hard to do. I bet when you practice singing a song, you likely play your voice, too. You try it out in different accents, as different characters, in different moods. Not just changing notes and pace, but everything. Then, when you find a combo that feels right to you, that's how you perform it. Not like you're reciting multiplication tables, but like you're making a mosaic masterpiece of sound. You probably sound a little like your mom or dad or grandparents on some songs, a little more like your bestie or your neighbors on others. Because artists naturally sample from our world to create our art. All of these sounds are in your world and will inevitably end up in your art, too. So, in a way, we all have interesting "accents" when we sing. Alanis is kinda avant garde here, though. If you could make a vocal version of abstract impressionism, it would probably sound like Alanis. Epic talent at painting emotion with sound. Growing up in the capital city of the country (Ottawa) and finishing high school in Toronto, the most multicultural city in the country, she had probably access to more vocal sounds than most people. It's a really great big box of crayons for such a creative soul to use.
I love this song! You should watch her perform it at yhe Grammy's with an orchestra. The stage set and lighting with watching the string section makes for a fantastic performance. I like your image of what her voice sounds like. I think it perfectly explains it.
Unicorn ish hen is my favorite childhood snack with corn Alaniss is like a mystica!\u said it b4 I wrote it\faerie who wants 2tell u what bothered her today ,a truly great artist she's amazing
Of course, by now someone must’ve told you that, yes, she is Canadian. It’s so true though that normally one can’t really hear accents; HOWEVER, if you want to get goosebumps, listen to Palio Nutini’s White Lies, Million Faces, or Last Request. Just put the headphones on and quietly listen (Especially White Lies) you can hear that beautiful accent along with the fingers sliding across the strings and the cello?… all of it. Beautiful. All of them. He can do a ballad like very few can. Last Request… his vibrato (chef’s kiss). Of course, Iron sky is amazing but in a different way. I read he may be making a comeback and, if so, well deserved.
Of course I could be wrong, but I don’t know that the movie ”City of Angels” made much of a splash - (I haven’t even seen it myself). But it does feature two absolutely majestic songs that were written specifically for it: ”Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls and this one. If nothing else they struck gold in the music department. This song is like a beautiful lament over a romantic/erotic interest being forbidden fruit, either because the counterpart is already in a relationship, or because Alanis is - or both. I feel she captured that mix of frustration, curiosity, ennui and discomfort perfectly, all while the musical crescendoes illustrate the stirring attraction boiling underneath.
"You speak of my love like You have experienced love like mine before. But this, is not allowed, You're uninvited " Omg!!! I'm falling apart over here!!!
I think the best word to describe her voice is "ethereal".
Unfortunately no official video lol
Alanis is Canadian. You should take a look at some of her first songs. You will be shocked by the difference.
pop princess to global icon
This song was written for the movie (CITY OF ANGELS) with Meg Ryan and Nicholas CAge. After watching the movie the song really makes sense. He was uninvited!
Yesssss I love that you brought it up to think of the film and the instrumentals and her voice and lyrics it’s perfection
Yes Brit, she’s from Canada. It only comes out with certain words when she speaks and sings.
The scene for this song I dont remember exactly, but I remember the feeling and stunningly stunned attitude I had. It stuck with me.
That movie makes grown men cry.
One of my favourite movies. Tbh all Nicolas cage movies are lol
Hauntingly beautiful...this song ramps up the goosebumps
Alanis IS her own style for sure! The lyrics of this particular song is perfectly paired with the dark and moody orchestra, as well as her delivery of them! LOVE
Yesss this song is incredible what a banger
I think…but some if not alot of them are about Joey from Full house from what i heard…
This is an absolutely amazing performance-oh Alanis!
If you haven’t done Thank U yet, you really need to! I’d recommend the official video since it’s iconic.
You said it - her vocals are incomparable.
There's emotional honesty in her singing not often seen.
Written for the movie City of Angels, very intense movie.
She's our Canadian neighbor.
AND WE ADORE HER!! ❤❤
👏🏻👏🏻
She’s different different.

I would describe her voice as Hauntingly Dynamic
She is Canadian! but she definitely has a unique vocal inflection that is so specific to her. Her live version of "That I would be good" is so pretty too
This is one of the most perfect LIVE performances ever ; PURE EAR CANDY !!! LOVE IT!!!
It feels eerie to me for sure. It’s my favorite from Alanis. She doesn’t have a song I don’t like.

Her tones touches your soul you just feel it. and thats a special power.

This song was done for the movie city if angels and it was a perfect pairing
She always brings to mind a banshee. The mythical spirits that wail out their pain and anger to all who would listen. And capture their prew while doing so!
A great artist with that mystical sound is Loreena Mckennitt, the mummeers dance. Beautiful voice.. Love Alanis...

"If a faerie could sing" yes! her soul feels so tethered to her voice, but still perfect and agile
Such a great song written for a great movie! Always one of my favorites from Alanis!
We heard the song on the radio & it was stunning! We saw the City of Angels movie & waited til the closing credits for her song.
This is after her experience in India. It was a personal journey for her.👍🏻🇨🇦🐉
you are right that you can not compare her voice to anyone. But she has one of the best voices out there.
she was huge in the late 90s! she’s making a comeback
Totally. Ethereal.
Her voice pierces the soul
"fey" is the word that comes to mind when I hear her... otherworldly
I feel you for sure! This song is meant for her I get chills every time
She’s canadian
Alanis is Canadian, from Ottawa, Ontario.

It's amazing feeling! I loved performing with a live band! I miss it.😊
Very underrated artist. She’s an angel.
I can hear her Canadian "r" s... Love our girl! 🇨🇦🙏
Another reaction channel I watch sometimes is Brad and Lex. Brad is a hard sell on a lot of the artists they watch but he fell head over heels for Alanis! She's incredible with a very unique voice and singing style.
Are you sure he didn't fall head over feet?
@chuckwilliams6261 Aww man, how did I miss that one?! 😖 Nice save!!
And Lex didn’t get jealous about it, which says a lot about her maybe
Her performance of this song live at the Grammy's backed by an orchestra is the one to watch
Your awesome Britt!!
“Hand in My Pocket” is so good!!!
Yes I understand where you are coming from. The song is eerie. If you get a chance to watch the movie you will totally understand the eeriness of the song. Perfect powerful
I love her ❤❤❤❤
She has a peculiar accent that emerges here and there, from time to time, ressembling French-Canadian. It's absolutely lovely! 😍
Her voice lends to the anticipation of the next note she is going to sing
Like a good book you can't stop in the middle, you have to see how it ends
I'm so happy you did this one. Like you said, stunning.
I agree with all the things you said about her sound... she's hard to pin down for sure and you did very well!
Alanis is married to another musical artist Souleye , She's Canadian and he is from Boston, their kids gonna have a great accent :D
You are correct! Alanis is from Canadia!
Her voice reminds me of Ireland singers with the Irish accent. What she's doing with her voice is called keening.,
Am so glad you took the advice from those of us who suggested this song after you reacted to You Outta Know . The orchestra sound gives. Such a beautiful haunting sound.
She longs better than an angel. They made a Broadway musical of her first album. This song was inspired by a trip to India.
This is my favorite song of hers.
I love this song and your reaction is fantastic.
Do in your house from her. Nothing but her voice. No music. It’s perfection
Britt, you have to go watch her perform this song live in concert!! It's amazing!!! They turn on a strobe light and she does a crazy headbang dance!! I'm surprised this song doesn't get more recommendations for reactions. It's in my top songs ever recorded.
Some of her more recent live performances are really good... Including this song!
It's a good one. It was in the movie City of Angels.
💯 Canadian - she just has a very unique cadence and way of enunciating her words
Alanis is Canadian. She finished high school in Toronto, Canada. Her Name suggests a French descent but nothing is sure. She moved to the US quite early so it might explain a little the undefined accent.

Her ‘accent’ is just the way she sings. And yes, she’s Canadian😊
This song always gives me a Led Zep Kashmir vibe when thoses drums kick in. My favorite song by her.
I love this song! You should watch her perform it at yhe Grammy's with an orchestra. The stage set and lighting with watching the string section makes for a fantastic performance. I like your image of what her voice sounds like. I think it perfectly explains it.
Her best
Yep.. she is a fellow Canadian .. and has had a spell on me for yrs🙂✌️
Unicorn ish hen is my favorite childhood snack with corn Alaniss is like a mystica!\u said it b4 I wrote it\faerie who wants 2tell u what bothered her today ,a truly great artist she's amazing
I think that accent is French Canadian. It's ;unreproducible for sure. This is in my top 5 favorite songs ever. Subscribed ;cuz you reacted to it!!!
Love this song!!!

I feel she captured that mix of frustration, curiosity, ennui and discomfort perfectly, all while the musical crescendoes illustrate the stirring attraction boiling underneath.
"You speak of my love like
You have experienced love like mine before.
But this, is not allowed,
You're uninvited "
Omg!!! I'm falling apart over here!!!
